It was funny how things happened. To say Jessica had gone almost four years without thinking of Yoona would be a bold-faced lie. Sometimes she couldn’t help but thinking about her, but Yoona didn’t affect her daily life. She didn’t think about her when she saw something on TV anymore or when a song came on the radio. But now driving to the hospital in her car, a car Yoona had stood by while Jessica negotiated the price with the salesman, she was seeing her everywhere.

When Jessica pulled into the parking lot of the hospital, she quickly found a place to park her SUV. The sooner she was in there, the sooner she could do whatever she needed to do, the sooner she could be on her way and have this whole mess behind her.

Jessica walked through the automatic doors of the hospital into the large, open and brightly-lit reception area. An older woman was behind the desk, dispatching calls throughout the hospital. Jessica veered to her right toward the elevator bank. She pushed the up arrow and held her breath until the light blinked and the doors dinged open. When she stepped inside the confines of the small space she thought to herself, here goes nothing.

Beam me up, es.

The doors to the third floor opened with another ding. One that sounded loud in the quiet halls of the hospital. Her trip to the hospital felt like judgment day and she couldn’t help but feel that Tiffany was her judge. Or her executioner.

Jessica had never met Tiffany Hwang, the daughter of an ex-model mother and a businessman father, yet she knew enough about her to know that she was a woman who got what she wanted.

Jessica rounded the corner from the elevator where she saw a man standing at the nurses’ station. He stood with his head bowed and his hands clasped together like he was in the middle of a prayer causing Jessica to stop in her tracks. She held off the urge to call out his name, instead taking a moment to notice all the changes in a man that she once considered a father figure. He’s Im Seulong, Yoona’s father. Jessica and Yoona had been dating for a year when Jessica’s parents died in a car accident and Seulong had stepped in.

She had prepared herself for facing Yoona but she hadn’t considered her dad. When she and Yoona had broken up she was left with a void in her chest. When she lost Yoona, she lost her family too.

Jessica took quiet, tentative steps toward Seoulong. He rubbed his jaw with one hand while his other massaged the back of his neck. The clear look of distress that he was under did nothing to help ease the thoughts running through Jessica’s mind.

What if Yoona was dying? A mountain of regret flooded Jessica. So many things that were left unsaid would haunt her if the end of Yoona’s life were near. Could she make things right this time? Could she tell Yoona now, after year’s apart and extensive therapy, that she no longer blamed Yoona for what happened? Would Yoona even care?

Finding her voice, Jessica opened to say Seulong’s name when another door opened and a much younger version of Seulong stepped out of the room. Jessica smiled to herself in spite of everything. Yoona's younger brother, Jongin, was a product of his father. Still tall, he had a head full of dark hair much like Seulong used to have.

Jongin took a stand next to his father, patting the man briefly on the back in a heart-warming gesture. Seulong looked over at his son, offering a small smile. When his eyes passed over Jessica his whole posture changed. He went from looking like a man on the brink of losing everything to looking like a man who had just been delivered a gift from God.

“Jessica … You came.” He stated the fact though the words flowed from his mouth more like a question.

“What’s happened?” Jessica asked. “Is Yoona okay? Wait, what am I saying, of course she’s not okay. She wouldn’t be in the hospital if she were.”

Seulong cracked a smile and hugged Jessica. “God I’ve missed you.” The hint of a smile began to form on Jessica’s lips. She pulled out of the embrace and punched Jongin playfully on the arm.

“My God, Jongin, look at you! You’re not some little kid any more are you?” Jessica ran her eyes over Jongin and waggled her eyebrows at him. Jongin laughed and squeezed her.

“You know some say I’m Yoona noona boy version,” he teased. Jessica rolled her eyes.

“And I’ll have to take your word for it,” she playfully said back.

“Jessica,” Seulong said. “Why don’t we have a seat?” He gestured to a set of white folding chairs along the far end of the wall. Jessica led the way over taking one of the chairs while Jessica took the other. Jongin squatted down on Jessica’s other side.

Not beating around the bush, Jessica asked the one question that had been plaguing her since Tiffany had called. “Be honest, ajushii. Is she dying?”

“She's not dying,” Jongin replied.

“Oh.” Jessica breathed out, relieved. But if she wasn’t dying…

Another set of footsteps sounded down the hall. Seulong looked up and sighed. The reaction caused Jessica to turn around to see who was on their way. An unfamiliar man in a white coat headed in their direction. Jessica assumed this was the doctor.

“Mr. Im. Jongin-shii,” the man said extending a hand to Seulong. “How is she today?”

“The same as yesterday. Frantic; confused.” Seulong shrugged. “Doc, this is Jessica. We think she might be able to help.”

Jessica looked at the doctor waiting for some kind of explanation.

“Ah, yes. Ms. Hwang told me that Jessica-shii would be coming. Jessica-shii, I'm Doctor Choi. Has anyone told you about Yoona-shii’s condition?”

“We were just getting to that,” Seulong said. “Jessica just got here.”

“Yoona-shii has had an accident. A week ago she slipped on a patch of black ice and went into a coma.”

Jessica gasped out loud. Her hands instinctively went for . “'Oh, God.” Yoona had been in a coma? No wonder she was confused and frantic. Yoona could have died! Preparing her heart and mind to see an old love was nothing compared to being out of it for nearly a week.

“It’s as bad as it sounds,” Dr. Choi replied grimly. “She woke up a couple of days ago with no signs of internal bleeding or damage.”

Jessica looked to Seulong and Jongin, confusion masking her face. “I'm not following. No internal bleeding or damage, that’s good, right? What does this have to do with me?”

The doctor took a deep breath and the words ran out of his mouth like they were being chased by fire. “From what we can gather from the CT scan's and tests we've run, Yoona-shii has dissociative amnesia.”

Jessica could feel her eyes scrunch together still in confusion.

“What that means,” Dr. Choi went on to explain. “Is that when she hit her head, a portion of her memories were blocked from her mind. There have been some cases where the patient only forgets the accident. They have no recollection as to what happened. In other cases, they lose only a few days. Yoona-shii’s case is a little more drastic. We don’t foresee this being a long-term condition. Typically a person regains their memories within a few days or weeks. However, there have been cases where it’s taken years for the memories to return. With Yoona-shii, she knows who she is, where she's from, who her dad and brother are. All of these are very good signs and we’re optimistic that with the right kind of therapy she’ll regain her memories sooner rather than later.” He paused and drew in a breath. “I'm afraid, Jessica-shii, this is where you come in."

It took a few minutes for the
