Realizing What Everyone Else Already Knew

It's Always Been You and I

Wait! Did you just imply that Daehyun and I are a couple!?!

Himchan laughed. “Well, you can sure act like one well.”

Youngjae groaned and shook his head, trying to get rid of the thoughts that plagued his mind. Their relationship wasn’t like that, it really wasn’t. ‘And I don’t want it to be… I don’t think.’

Youngjae groaned again, this time leaning against the cool hallway corridor. The music thumping from the room beyond it wasn’t helping his muddled mind, but in a college dorm there weren’t many places one could find quiet.

‘That’s why I’m going to the library. I definitely need to study hard this week so I can afford to go home.’ Youngjae smiled. ‘And Daehyun said he would join—why is that making me smile!?’

Youngjae closed his eyes and silently cursed Himchan, who had put the thoughts in his mind only a few moments earlier while they were on the phone.  Realizing he was wasting time, Youngjae pushed himself off the wall and headed down the hall to Daehyun’s room. He knocked on the door and then proceeded to straighten his clothes out as he waited.

He rolled his eyes at his own actions. ‘This isn’t a date! It’s a study session between friends. Get yourself together Youngjae.’

The door opened and Youngjae couldn’t help but smile as he eyes fell upon Daehyun even though he had seen the other not even 20 minutes before.

“Hey Jae, come on in.” Daehyun smiled as he opened the door wider.

Youngjae’s smile fell slightly. “I thought we were going to the library.”

“Yeah but, I invited my roommate along since we are taking the same class… well it’s at different times but, anyhow I thought we could do the homework together and then he suggested we just do the homework here.”

“Ah… that makes sense…” Youngjae pouted as he walked through the door. ‘Stop being sad you don’t get Daehyun to yourself. He has always been popular with people, it only makes sense he gets along with his roommate… I should be happy for him… but it hurts…’

Youngjae gripped onto his phone in his pocket tighter as he remembered Himchan’s last text he had sent almost right after they had gotten off the phone.

Have you still not realized how your feelings are different for him? Things would be easier for you if you would just confess.

“Take a seat at the table.” Daehyun called.

            “Yeah…”

“Hey, Youngjae.” Daehyun’s roommate, Baekhyun waved at him.

“Hello.” Youngjae said politely before taking a seat on the opposite side of the table.

“I have the popcorn!” Daehyun said happily as he placed the buttery treat onto the table. He took his seat between the two boys and immediate dug into the popcorn as he began talking to Baekhyun about their class.

Youngjae sighed quietly. ‘This isn’t what I had planned at all… I was going to the library to actually study since it’s hard in the resident halls…’

Youngjae felt all but ignored by his best friend but he tried not to show it as he began writing down chemical names and drawing what the chemical looked like. It was the middle of the week so there wasn’t as much noise as compared to the weekend and Youngjae was almost at the point where he could tune out the noise. Wearing his headphones would have helped but it seemed rude and Youngjae still wanted to hang out with Daehyun like they had been earlier.

Youngjae looked up from his chemistry homework as he heard Daehyun laugh at something Baekhyun had said. He gripped his pencil tightly and went back to his work, ignoring the roommates.

‘I should be happy that they are so close… not everyone is lucky enough to find someone they can get along with.’ Youngjae tried to reason with himself.

It wasn’t until Youngjae was sure he was going to snap his pencil in half from how annoyed he was getting that he finally couldn’t take it. He spared another glance up at the laughing roommates, who had barely seemed to study at all, before slamming his textbook close. The laughing stopped abruptly but Youngjae was too annoyed to acknowledge it, instead packing his backpack at lightning speed.

“Jae—what… Where are you going?” Daehyun asked confused.

            “Somewhere I can actually study.”

Daehyun laughed, as if he didn’t believe Youngjae was actually leaving. Youngjae stood up though and Daehyun’s laugh died instantly. “Jae—“

“I’ll see you later.” Youngjae said shortly before he stormed off, practically slamming the dorm room door behind him. Youngjae’s anger had him almost stomping down the hallway as it seemed everything around him was fueling his bad mood.

“Youngjae!” Daehyun’s voice filled the hallway.

As much as Youngjae wanted to continue down the hallway, he couldn’t help but stop and look back at Daehyun who was running towards him. Youngjae wouldn’t be able to describe how his heart felt as he watched Daehyun chase after him, leaving his roommate behind, a mixture of being squeezed too tightly but also expanding so much he thought it would explode.

“Jae!” Daehyun grabbed onto Youngjae’s arm once he caught up to him, like he was afraid that Youngjae would continue walking away again once he had finally reached him. “Youngjae, why did you leave?”

“I told you, I need to study.”

Daehyun pouted and let his hold relax. “I would have understood if you had just said so… you didn’t need to rush off like that… Jae… why are you so mad?”

“Why?” Youngjae scoffed. “Because—“ Youngjae stopped himself.

            ‘Because I wanted your attention.’

Youngjae’s eyes widened as he realized that he was jealous. There was no other way to explain why he was feeling so jealous and possessive of his friend. As the acceptance flowed over him random moments from other the years hit him and Youngjae felt like a huge idiot for not seeing what must have been so obvious that Himchan and Yongguk had had no problem picking up on it.

            “Jae?”

Daehyun’s voice along with his hands gently making their way up his arms as a way to comfort him, pulled Youngjae from his thoughts. Feeling overwhelmed by his feelings and not sure yet what he wanted to do, Youngjae pushed Daehyun back. Daehyun stumbled and looked at Youngjae confused. Yougnjae’s heart hurt, not meaning to push his crush that hard, but he really felt like he needed to get away from Daehyun just so he could think straight.

“I have to go.” Youngjae said almost robotically.

            “Wh—Youngjae?!”

Daehyun went to grab Youngjae’s wrist so Youngjae pulled it back before turning around and proceeding to run away. Daehyun was yelling behind him but Youngjae didn’t have the answers yet to give him.

The cold outside air hit Youngjae once he rushed out the dorm. Immediately he felt a slight sense of relief and the swirling in his mind began to slow and sort itself out, beginning with the fact that because of his feelings he might lose his best friend.

Youngjae stopped walking as a sense of despair befell him. ‘So it comes down to telling him and possibly losing Daehyun and making our team awkward or not telling him and hoping that these feelings go away.’

Youngjae scoffed bittering. “Good luck with that… knowing now that I’ve liked him for years, I don’t see how my heart will change any time soon.”

Youngjae looked around once he realized he said that out loud. He began walking back to his own residence hall. ‘Great now people probably think I’m losing my mind…. I never thought I’d say this but, I wish there was a monster here for me to take my feelings out on’.
