Dating a cry-baby

"Minseok, stop stressing yourself out! The guy is like a human teddy-bear in the disguise of a deer, and to me neither of them sounds rather threatening".

It had been a normal day at the café until one of the workers, Minseok if you hadn't already guessed, decided to have a minor panic attack, which then blew up into a freaking tornado of anxiety

"You don't understand Baekhyun! What if the guy hates me? What if he has changed his mind and doesn’t even show up? What if he doesn't like ice-cream?!"

Minseok's best friend, the unlucky guy Jongdae, almost fulfilled his urge to face palm himself, but decided against it. Instead he busied himself with cleaning the counter for the 5th time that day.

"Like Baekhyun said, the guy is as innocent as a deer. I met him once for like five minutes when he was ordering coffee from me, and the guy looked like he was about to himself! So if you're scared about your date beating you because of ice-cream, then you've got the wrong guy".

Minseok stopped pacing around the café, which thankfully was empty at the moment, and slumped over the counter. He looked forward to the blind-date Baekhyun had set him up on, he really did, but he was nervous as hell!

He had heard that the guy in question had never been in a relationship before, never even so much as gone on a date, so he really wanted to give his date a memory to remember as a happy one.

That's why he had planned everything ahead of date, for weeks actually, so that the date would turn out perfect! The date he had planned was a classic ; go out to eat something, in their case ice-cream, then go for a movie and end it all with a romantic walk until it was time for him to take his date home. All in the true style of a gentleman of course.

"Well, your date is really going to hate you if you're late you know..."

At Jongdae's words, Minseok took a look at his watch, and holy he was supposed to be there in 20 minutes!

"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god! I'm going to lose this boy before we have even begun dating! I'll se you guys later, wish me luck!"

And like that he was out the door, running like mad-man to get to the ice-cream parlor on time.

Minseok had been wrong when he thought that running to the parlor had been the worst part of the date. The worst part was definitely the waiting.

He had arrived at the location they had decided on 10 minutes ahead of time, and right now he was waiting for his date for the day (and hopefully for more occasions in the future if everything went well).

Just when he thought that maybe he should just leave and tell Baekhyun to apologize to the guy for Minseok being a coward, a pair of slim legs came into view and in surprise he looked up to see who it was.

And holy crap, the guy was adorable! Or was he really a guy, or had Baekhyun set him up with a girl as a joke?

The boy was clad in a pair of baby-pink skinny jeans, which he had paired with a white and blue striped t-shirt. A backpack with the same color-combination was slung over his shoulder, and from it dangled several types of small toys and key-chains. In Minseoks' eyes, this guy was even cuter than the baby-pandas at the zoo he and Tao used to go to.

"A-are you Minseok?"

Not only was the guy cute, but his voice was so soft and angelic as well. It took a second or two before Minseok realized that he should reply.

"Yes, that's me. And I guess you're my date right? Take a seat".

Minseok scooted over in the booth he had chosen so that the other could slide in as well. The other just smiled shyly at him before he put his backpack down and slid in beside Minseok.  As the booth had an U-shape, they couldn't exactly sit on opposite sides, but Luhan made sure to put his backpack between them as some sort of a line. Just in case this Minseok guy was a ert or something.

Minseok took a moment to look over his date once again. The first thing that struck him was the eyes. Baekhyun and Jongdae hadn't been kidding when they said that the boy looked like deer. Ig his eyes didn't prove it enough, the guys' innocent looks helped quite a bit.

His eyes then focused on the pale-pink hair. Even if he was sure that the boy would look good, if not adorable, in a any color, he had to say that this color matched the boy perfect. Especially if he always wore these sorts of clothes.

Once he was done inspecting, he realized that the other was by playing with his hands and stealing glances at Minseok, as if unsure of what to do next. Minseok felt really stupid for a moment. He must've really freaked the poor boy outwith all his staring.

"I'm sorry for staring. It's just that my friends told me that you had the looks of a deer and I just wanted to confirm it. Looks like they were telling the truth after all".

The boy looked a little bit startled, before his cheeks turned a light-shade of pink and he turned his gaze back to his hands.

"I-I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing though..."

Minseok almost let out a giggle, but decided not to tease the poor boy too much.

"Of course it's a good thing! Have you even looked yourself in a mirror? I mean look at how cute you are. If I knew you'd be this cute I would've taken Baekhyun up on his offer for a blind-date ages ago".

Now the boys' cheeks no longer held the pink shade, but instead they took on the color of a tomato or maybe even a bright red stop-sign. Minseok almost felt bad for the boy now, and he couldn't help but let a small giggle slip between his lips. The boy looked a bit startled, before he pouted and looked down at his backpack instead.

Minseok took pity on the obviously extremely shy boy, so he put his hand on the other's where it was positioned on the table, and he could feel how the other tensed up at the action.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to laugh at you. It's just that you're so cute when you're shy. But I'd really like to get to know you better and that can't happen if we don't talk, so it'd be nice if you could tell me a little bit about yourself okay? Without staring at the table".

He gave the other a gentle smile and a small squeeze to the hand he was holding in his own.  He could see the other's gaze flicking all over the place, trying not to look at him. In the end, the boy finally looked at him, or at least sort of.

"Okay... Ummm... I'm Luhan, I'm 21 years old and I'm from Beijing, China. I like to sing, play soccer and collect... ummm".

"Yeah? What did you say you liked to collect? I didn't quite catch it".

"I-I like to collect cute things. Like figurines and plushies and those kind of things. Anything cute really".

Luhan really felt like crying right then and there. Why did he tell the other such and embarrassing fact about himself?!

"You do? Then I guess I've just received a major hint for what kind of gifts I can give you. Now tell me, what flavor of ice-cream do you want?"

When he didn't receive a reply, he turned his gaze to Luhan who looked at him with wide eyes.

"Luhan? Is there something wrong?"

"Y-you don't think that's weird? A guy liking cute things? And collecting plushies?"

"Of course not. I mean, I was sort of expecting it since you look so cute all by yourself and you carry close to ten key-chains with figurines on your backpack. I think it's really cute. It suits you well".

Luhan almost wanted to cry in that moment. Even though Baekhyun had reassured him that Minseok wasn't the type of guy to judge others, he'd never had expected Minseok to actually like this side of him. All of the other students at university thought otherwise after all...

"Strawberry".

"Hmm? What did you say?"

"Strawberry. For my ice-cream. And Minseok... thank you. For going out with someone like me".

Minseok looked at the boy with a sad smile on his face. When Luhan began asking him about why he didn't think it was weird for Luhan to like the things he liked, he had figured that Luhan must've taken a lot of for this in the past. After all, boys liking cute stuff and having a baby-face wasn't really something you came across every day.

Scooting as close to the boy as the other's backpack would allow, he brought Luhan into a hug.

"You shouldn't say things like that about yourself like it was something bad. I like you already and I've only been here with you for less than half and hour. Being shy and liking plushies is just something that makes you even more adorable than you already are".

Pulling away from Luhan, he saw something that looked like tears b in the corners of the others' eyes, but he couldn't be too sure.

"I'm going to get our ice-cream. Stay here and don't you dare to run away because I'll find you".

With a playful smile and a wink, he was off to get them their ice-cream.

Luhan just sat there in a daze, face red as a double decker from London, his hand placed over the spot on his cheek which Minseok had just kissed.

Once their ice-creams were eaten and the hours had passed, they headed for the cinema, the next official stop on their date.

Minseok had been sneaky and booked tickets in advance, but not to just any movie. The movie he had picked was a new horror-movie, and he was sure that his plan on making Luhan snuggle into him and hide his head in his neck was going to be a big success.

"Minseok, is that the movie we're going to watch?"

Minseok almost took pity upon how small Luhan's voice sounded as he looked at the poster on the wall, but he couldn't let this chance go to waste.

"Yes that's the one. Do you like horror-movies?"

Even though the answer was painfully obvious, he still kept up his innocent façade and popped the question.

"N-not very much. I-I get scared q-quite easily so..."

Minseok too a hold on Luhan's smaller hand as he guided them toward their seats at the top of the salon. Most of the seats at the top were empty, so they didn't have to worry about disturbing anyone if they wanted to whisper to each other.

As the intro to the movie began playing, Luhan began to tremble in his seat. Minseok didn't realize this at all, until Luhan began trembling so much that he dropped his bag of popcorn on the floor.

Minseok then looked over at Luhan, who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but right there in his seat. Taking the other's hand into his once again, he the backside of Luhan's hand with his thumb as he leaned over to whisper into his ear.

"It's alright, I'm here beside you. If it gets too scary, hold on to me, okay?"

Luhan just focused on the screen and gave a small nod, but as soon as the more extreme parts of the movie began to play, he fisted a handful of Minseok's shirt and buried his face in his neck.

"Plan success" Minseok thought, as he began  Luhan's back and held his hand with his free one. Of course, he felt a bit guilty for making Luhan scared, but at least he got to show him that Luhan could depend on him if he ever needed to.

Everything went well until he felt something wet hit the skin of his neck. At first he thought he had imagined it, but when small sobs began escaping from the person in his arms, he knew that Luhan was, indeed, crying.

"Hey, Luhan are you okay?"

He rubbed circles on Luhan's back, hoping for the boy to stop crying.

"I-I'm scared. I-I know that you wanted to watch this with me, but I don't w-want to watch it a-anymore. C-can we p-please leave?"

Minseok felt like the worst person on the planet. Not only did he cause Luhan to cry, but he did it out of his own selfishness. He could already see how this would end with Luhan declaring that he never wanted to see him again, and he'd have to call Baekhyun later that night to tell him that he indeed screwed up after all.

"Of course. Come on, let's go".

With his arm around Luhan's shoulders, he held the boy close to his side as they exited the cinema. By the way Luhan was gulping, he could tell that the other was trying to hold back his tears.

He led them to an almost empty park close by, where he sat them down on a bench and let Luhan cry. The boy sobbed loudly and didn't bother to hold anything back, but who could blame him? He had obviously been scared to death even before they entered the cinema, and Minseok was only waiting for the moment when the boy would push him away and yell at him for being the worst date ever.

But Luhan didn't. He only held Minseok closer as his sobs began to quiet down and turned into small sniffles, which sounded so pitiful that Minseok almost wanted to cry at his own insensitiveness.

"I-I'm sorry that you didn't get to watch the movie".

Minseok looked down at the boy in shock, as his own eyes met with Luhans' sparkling, wet ones. Bringing the boy closer he cradled the boys head to his chest.

"What are you saying stupid? It's my fault that you were so scared that you began to cry and now you're apologizing? I'm the one who's sorry Luhan. Actually... I chose that movie because I knew you'd probably be scared. I wanted you to be scared so you'd hug me and hold onto me, but I ended up making you cry instead, and I'm so sorry Luhan. I've ruined the first date of your life".

Minseoks' eyes went wide as he felt a soft pressure on his cheek. Turning towards Luhan, he found the other one looking at him with puffy eyes and a small smile.

"You may be stupid, but you're really nice. And I like you. So make sure to bring me to see a movie which won't make me cry next time okay?"

Because of his shocked state, Minseok could only nod at that.

As their evening together was beginning to come to an end, they both couldn't help but to feel a bit sad. Minseok because he hadn't really gotten a chance to make it up to Luhan, and Luhan because he was sure that he'd never get to see Minseok again. After all, why would such a sweet guy as Minseok date a cry-baby like him?

They were almost at Luhan's apartment complex when Minseok spotted something which caught his interest.

"Wait here Luhan, I'll be right back".

With that he left Luhan with quick strides, walking into the shop he had spotted.

Luhan, who was left all alone to wait outside, sat down on a bench a couple of meters away. At first he didn't think much of it. After all, Minseok was allowed to leave his side for a while without it being a big deal. Their date was coming to an end after all.

But as the minutes ticked by and Minseok didn't return, Luhan began to wonder if Minseok had actually abandoned him and gone home. Maybe he had grown tired of taking care of Luhan the entire day?

Walking over to the shop, he realized two things. One ; he couldn't spot Minseok anywhere inside the small shop, and two ; the shop had another exit.

Even though he had been expecting it to happen at some point, Luhan couldn't help but to feel sad and disappointed. Had he really been such a bad date for Minseok to leave him like this?

Disappointment filling his heart, he went back to the bench where he sat down and cried. No matter how much he had cried after seeing that horrible movie earlier, he somehow still found more tears to spill.

"Luhan? Are you crying? Oh my god Luhan what happened?"

Luhan looked up in shock at the voice, only to realize that it really was Minseok who was calling his name as he ran up to Luhan, shopping-bag in his hand.

Minseok sat himself down next to Luhan on the bench and hugged the other boy close, wondering to himself what could've possible made Luhan cry again.

"I though y-you... I thought you le..."

Even though Luhan couldn't form a whole sentence through his tears, Minseok understood him perfectly clear. He didn't know how Luhan would have gotten the idea that he would leave him in the middle of their date, but he sure as hell wasn't going to make that nightmare come true.

When Luhan had calmed down, they walked the rest of the way to Luhan's apartment, where they stopped outside the door. It surprised both of them when Luhan was the first to speak.

"I-I had a really good time today. You stayed with me, even if I cried a lot..."

"It's all my fault you cried and I feel really bad about it. Because of that, and for other reasons, I wanted to give you a gift. Here, this is for you, even though you cried so much when I went to buy it".

Handing the shopping-bag over to Luhan, he was relieved to see a smile full of glee spread itself across Luhan's face as he looked inside. Inside the bag was a plushie resembling a ghost with huge, cute eyes and a small smile. The cuteness of it made Luhan smile even more.

"I hope that you won't be scared of this little fella even after all the things you had to go through today. Take good care of him will you?"

Luhan just looked at him with a big smile, nodding his head like a happy child.

Feeling a little brave, Minseok stepped forward and cupped Luhan's cheek before giving him a small kiss right on those soft lips. When he pulled back, Luhan was resembling a stop-sign once again, cheeks bright red as he stared at Minseom with wide eyes.

"I hope you won't start crying from me doing that. And I also hope that I'll be able to take this cry-baby out on another date soon. Because even though you cry a lot, I've already fallen for you".

When Luhan gave him a small, shy smile and nodded, he knew that his offer had been accepted.

He couldn't help but smile wider himself.

"Are you free on Tuesday by any chance? I happen to have that day off and I know a great restaurant nearby..."

Before he could even finish his sentence, Luhan was giving him a big hug, replying with actions instead of words.

"I guess it's settled then. Here, I'll give you my phone number so you can call me if anything comes up and so we can agree on when to meet okay?"

Luhan took the folded piece of paper from him, before they hugged one last time and Minseok made sure that Luhan had entered his apartment safely before heading home.

Inside his apartment, Luhan went to his bedroom and put the ghost-plushie next to his pillow, the special place where only his most priced plushies could be positioned.

He then unfolded Minseok's note to add him as a contact to his phone, when he saw a message written under the row of numbers.

"I hope that I'll be able to show my sincerity for you in a more suitable way in the future, because although we've just met I've already fallen for you. Good night my little cry-baby, I'll dream of you tonight".

With a giggle, Luhan took out his phone and added the number to his contact list, smiling all the while as a warm, pleasant feeling began blooming in his chest.
