Part 2

Voices Don't Matter

 it's 3am: no proofread. (Beta later.) Beta here. I hate school. Yes proofread.

   Hyukjae quickly pulled away, his face flushed and eyes dazed. The sound of students cheering and staring at him made him feel like everyone in the world was watching him, but he was too worried about Donghae to care. Are you going to just stand there? Donghae signed before pointing to his pile of books that were laying on the floor. They aren't going to pick themselves up.

    "Shut up." Hyukjae mumbled before fumbling with his hands while trying to think of what to say. "Uhh... I forget how to say this..." Hyukjae continued to mumble as he tried to sign. "Would you like to be together?" he finally managed to sign, sighing to himself for not remembering how to sign all the things that he wanted. Donghae smiled, quickly signing back a 'yes' before nodding his head happily.

    "What just happened?" Someone from the group of students asked.

    "Hyukjae just asked Donghae out and he said yes." Sungmin told the others in a matter of fact tone as he watched the two sign back a forth to each other. "I can't believe I had to translate for you guys, it was so obvious!"

    Hyukjae picked the pile of books off the floor and held them out for Donghae to take.

    What kind of person doesn't carry his boyfriends books for him? Donghae signed before closing his lockers and taking ahold of Hyukjae's free hand.

    "You rude little ," Hyukjae said as they began walking down the hallway, trying to ignore their peers who were still lingering about to see how Hyukjae was going to act. "You would never carry my stuff."

    Donghae pulled his phone from his pocket and typed something on the notepad before holding it up for the other to read. I don't need to carry your things, I help you study.'

    "That means nothing!" Hyukjae grumbled as Donghae shoved the phone back into his pocket. "Just because you managed to get me a good grade doesn't mean you can-"

    Donghae let go of the others arm and slapped him lightly on the shoulder. 'You got yourself the good grade,' he signed, 'So stop saying that I did it for you.'

    "S-shut up." Hyukjae mumbled as he grabbed Donghae's hand and pulled him down the hallway. "Now let's get out of here 'cause I don't really like all those people staring at me." Donghae nodded before speeding up to a run in order to keep up with the other.

    The noise of the crowd had finally gone and it was now replaced with the sound of clashing plates, quiet chatter, and the sound of feet moving across the floor. Donghae quietly sat across from Hyukjae as he read the last few pages of his book. Hyukjae on the other hand, was mentally debating with himself whether or not bringing Donghae to this cafe was a good idea. "What the hell was I thinking? This place is lame anyway." Hyukjae grumbled to himself as he watched the other read. "What's that stupid book about anyway?" He asked as Donghae looked up to see what he was complaining about.

    The mute boy marked his page before closing the book and reaching into his bag to pull out a notebook and a blue pen. He flipped to an empty page before scribbling down some words. 'It is about this girl whose husband died and left her letters. The letters told her to go out and enjoy life instead of crying.' Donghae pushed the notebook over to Hyukjae so he could read it before it was pushed back to him so he could write more. 'Then one day she meets this guy at a cafe and they talk. She goes back every day at the same time to meet him and they fall in love.'

    "That's so cliche." Hyukjae replies as he taps his fingers on the table and reads over Donghae's explanation. "You need a book with more excitement and fighting in it or something."

    'What does his greatness recommend then?' Donghae scribbles down on the paper before leaning back in his seat and watching Hyukjae with a smug look on his face. Hyukjae didn't read much, Donghae knew that, so the chances of him being able to recommend a book or even name one were slim to none.

    He watched as the other's cheeks turned red and he pushed his chair away from the table, the sound of the wooden legs scraping against the floor hurting his ears. Donghae brought his hands up to sign something but he was to late because Hyukjae was gone.

    'Why do I always have to be a smart ?' Donghae asked himself as he buried his head in his arms. 'I'm going to win an award for worst boyfriend of the year if I keep insulting him like that.'

    Donghae jerked his head up at the sudden sound of something hitting the table to see a white mug with whipped cream flowing out of it and Hyukjae sitting in his chair across from him poking at a piece of chocolate cake with his fork.

    "Are you just going to sit there and look at it or are you going to drink it?" Hyukjae asked as he watched Donghae eyeball the cup. He tried his hardest to hold back a smile when Donghae grabbed the cup and took a sip, leaving a wonderful whipped cream mustache on his face.

    "Aish, come here." Hyukjae grumbled as he leaned across the table and wiped the cream off Donghae's face. "You're an embarrassment, you know that?"

    The mute boy looked down as his face began to turn pink. Hyukjae glanced at the piece of cake sitting on the table before pushing it forward. "Eat the damned thing and be happy... I know you like chocolate and stuff." Hyukjae said. He couldn't help but let a small smile creep to his face as he watched Donghae happily shove a fork full of cake into his mouth.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    It was late at night, his parents weren't home, and it was pouring down rain when Donghae heard someone knocking at their front door. It didn't take the boy long to find the bat he kept hidden under his bed and quietly sneak downstairs to the front door where he heard the knocking again. In one swift movement Donghae opened the door and swung the bat being thankful that he missed once he realized that it was Hyukjae standing on his front steps.
    "Donghae, what the hell?" Hyukjae shouted as he grabbed the bat from the others hands and pushed his way inside the house. "You could have killed me with that, you dumb ." Hyukjae threw the bat on the ground and closed the others front door.
    'I didn't know it was going to be you.' Donghae signed in apology. 'I thought someone was going to try and break into the house; you could have called or something first. Idiot.'
    "Yeah, well I did but no one answered so I just came over." Hyukjae shrugged as he walked past the other and made his way upstairs to Donghae's bedroom. He had been to his house a few times while studying and remembered where it was. Plus, the younger didn't seem to mind. "I have this big test in health tomorrow about the body and I need your help. I already failed the class like three times so I need to pass it." Donghae followed Hyukjae upstairs to his room before watching the other take a seat at his desk. "And I brought sticky notes!" Hyukjae smiled his wonderful smile and Donghae tried to look past it as he walked over to his closet and pulled out a spare pair of sweat pants and a shirt.
    'Put these on so you don't get sick.' Donghae signed after he threw the clothes at Hyukjae. 'You're soaked. Don't you know what an umbrella is?'
    "Does it look like I care about a little water?" Hyukjae argued back as he tugged off his wet shirt before putting the dry one on in its place. "Yah, turn around when I take off my pants!" He scolded Donghae, who was currently sitting on his bed watching him undress. "And no I don't care that we are both men, you are my boyfriend and it's weird." Donghae laughed and covered his eyes with his hands as Hyukjae changed his pants. The mean, blunt and forceful boy that was seen at school was Hyukjae, but this nervous and shy oddball that only Donghae saw was too. "Okay, I'm done you can uncover your eyes or whatever." Hyukjae said as he began to search through the books on Donghae's desk.
    'What are you looking for?' Donghae signed as he walked up and tapped Hyukjae on the shoulder. 'I will be able to find it faster than you.'
    "Biology book." Hyukjae murmured as he backed away and let Donghae search for the book. "No wonder I couldn't find it..." Hyukjae sighed in defeat when Donghae pulled the book out from behind his backpack and handed it to the other. Donghae went back to sitting on his bed while Hyukjae took a seat on the floor and opened the book to a diagram of the human body.
    "Donghae," Hyukjae began to ask as he looked up at the boy looking down at him. "Were you ever able to make sounds or something?" The mute boy just stared. "I know it's a weird question but sometimes mute people can make some sounds, like my grandma, who is deaf but she makes these sounds that are a bit like a laugh."
    Donghae let out a long sigh before grabbing his phone off the bedside table and typing something. Hyukjae's phone dinged and he pulled it out to read the text message that Donghae sent him. 'I could talk before.' The text message said before Donghae began tapping furiously at the screen again. 'When I was six, I got a really bad version of strep throat,' the new message said. 'They had to do surgery and when I woke up I couldn't talk. It got so bad they had to do this thing to my vocal cords and... well..' Donghae tossed his phone on the end table again before looking back at Hyukjae dejectedly.
    "Donghae, I'm sorry that I asked." Hyukjae said as he put his phone back in his pants pocket.
    Donghae just kicked him and pointed to the biology book. 'I'm fine,' He signed. 'Now did you come here to talk all night or study. You better not fail.' Donghae signed quickly before crossing his arms.
    "I'm not going to fail." Hyukjae replied as he scribbled something down on one of the sticky notes before standing up and plastering it against Donghae's forehead. "I'll do fine as long as you help me."
     Donghae pulled the sticky note off his forehead before giving Hyukjae an annoyed look.
     "Don't look at me like that," Hyukjae whined, "this is going to help so just let me do it!" Donghae stuck the note back to his forehead. Temporalis... "I need you to take off your shirt while I label the rest of these." He told the other as he continued to scribble down names from the diagram.
    Donghae hopped off the bed and slapped Hyukjae on the shoulder. 'No!' He quickly signed. 'You are not going to label me!'
    Hyukjae took ahold of Donghae's shirt before pulling him closer. "Yes I am," he gave Donghae a quick kiss on the cheek before tugging off the others shirt and forcing him to lay on he ground. "Now stay there and don't move while I finish these labels." Donghae kicked Hyukjae in the side as he laid down on the floor with a slight blush across his face. "Okay, I think I have them all. Let's start at the top and work our way down shall we?"
    Donghae rolled his eyes and put his arms behind his head as Hyukjae grabbed one of the labels he made. "The sternocieidomastoid... who the names something that? I can barely even say it!" Hyukjae grumbled to himself as he began to stare at Donghae. "I know that it is up near your head I just don't really remember where..."
    Donghae smiled and happily pointed to his neck, 'That is the easiest one to remember, seriously.' The mute boy signed. 'I'm disappointed...'
    "It is most defiantly not the easiest one to remember!" Hyukjae huffed as he went to place the sticky note on his boyfriends neck. He slowly stopped his hand before pulling it back and switching his position so he was sitting on the boys hips. Donghae shot upward in an attempt to push him off but Hyukjae just grabbed him around the waist. "But I think I just found the perfect way to help me remember where it is."
    Donghae's mouth opened in a silent moan as Hyukjae attached his lips to the others neck and began rather harshly. Donghae silently gripped Hyukjae's shirt as he felt teeth rake gently across his neck. "There we go," Hyukjae said as he pulled away leaving Donghae in a daze and a brand new mark on the side of his neck. "Now I'll remember exactly where this stupid sterno-whatever thing is." Hyukjae smile brightly as he placed the label next to the mark on Donghae's neck and gently pushed him back onto the ground. The boy reached behind him and pulled up another label before turning back to Donghae. "Deltoid...that's your shoulder... isn't it?" Donghae nodded weakly in response before watching the smirk appear on Hyukjae's face as he slowly moved towards his shoulder.
    They were down to the last few labels and colorful marks could be seen all across Donghae's body. The boy was now supporting himself with his arms as he watched Hyukjae go for one of the remaining notes that required him to remove his pants. It wasn't his idea  and he certainly didn't condone laying in front of his boyfriend in only his underwear at all, especially when Hyukjae knew he had been supporting a hard on since the attack on his 'transversus abdominus'.
    "We're almost done Donghae," Hyukjae started as he began moving his head towards Donghae's inner thigh. "Sartorius." Hyukjae muttered before attaching his lips to the boys thigh. Hyukjae hummed as he glanced upward to see Donghae staring down at him with a gleam in his eye. Hyukjae continued to smirk slightly he pulled away and slapped the label on Donghae's leg.
    Donghae sat up before making a grab at one of the sticky notes left and the pen that sat close by. He scratched out the writing already there and wrote something new, then stuck the note to his hand before holding it up for Hyukjae to read.
    "Lips," Hyukjae read, "but I don't need to know where they -" he began but was cut off by Donghae's lips on his. The younger's moves were quick and soon, he had Hyukjae pinned underneath him as their mouths clashed against one another's. Hyukjae's hands ran their way down Donghae's back before landing firmly on his hips, pulling the younger down closer to him. Donghae bit the others lip harshly as Hyukjae's hips came in contact with his own causing a wave of pleasure to wash over him.
    It was only then did he come to his senses and quickly sat up with a red blush covering his face. 'Sorry,' Donghae quickly signed to Hyukjae as he scrambled to his feet. 'I'm just going to...to take a shower.' Hyukjae just let out a long breath of defeat as he let himself lay back onto the floor. He looked around at the mess of notes crumpled up all over the floor; a smile crept across his face when he thought of the good grade he was going to get on this test tomorrow.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Hand in hand, the two boys strolled down the street on their way home from school. In one boy's hand, there was an umbrella just in case another spring storm decided to fall upon them, while in the other boy's hand, there was a piece of paper with a surprisingly good grade across the top.

    "Told you I would do good." Hyukjae told the other once again just to help get his point across.

    Donghae nodded again before turning his head to give Hyukjae one of those, 'I get it now shut up,' looks.

    "I know you know, so stop giving me those looks and just be happy for me, will ya?" The older boy whined before pulling his boyfriend into the same cafe they stopped at the day prior.

    It hasn't been mentioned in any of the conversations the two had as a couple, or even in the ones they had when they were still simply study partners, but both of the boys knew that stopping at the cafe after school was going to become part of a routine. A routine that both boys secretly hoped would last longer than the end of graduation.

    'With your new marks, you will now be able to graduate with the rest of the class.' Donghae scribbled down in his notebook before letting the other take a look. 'And since our last names are Lee we will be able to sit together...' The sentence trailed off and Hyukjae looked up from the page to see Donghae looking at him with a smile.

    "But I sit next to you all the time." Hyukjae said playfully. "What if I wanted to sit next to someone more interesting at graduation, like the Choi guy."

    Donghae crossed his arms and leaned against the back of the chair as he waited for Hyukjae to continue.

    "Plus if I get bored talking to him I could always stare at his wonderful face - I'm joking! Joking!" Hyukjae shouted as Donghae's foot collided full on with Hyukjae's shin from across the table. "Why the hell are you so moody today? And to think I got you a ing gift.. damned leg hurts now..."

    Donghae perked right up at the mention of a gift from the other. It's not that he was greedy, but no one ever bought him gifts besides his parents and Sungmin, so he was extremely curious. 'What is it?' he signed before dragging his chair around the table until it was next to the other's.

    "Of course you get all lovey when I mention gifts. You are only in this relationship for it's benefits, you really don't like me at all." Hyukjae said as he reached into his bag, avoiding the hit Donghae had aimed at his shoulder. "Close your eyes and hold out your hands."

    Donghae obeyed, stretching out his hands in front of him, wondering what Hyukjae would put in them.

    "You can look now." Hyukjae laughed as Donghae opened his eyes and smiled wide at the book in his hands. Hyukjae had seen the boy repeatedly glancing at the book in the window of the store they passed on their way home from school and knew he was hesitant on buying it because they only had it in English, and Donghae's English wasn't all that... fantastic. It was the only fault the boy had really. The little bit of it that the mute boy could write made almost no sense at all and when he tried to read assignments in the language, he struggled quite a lot, but that's just what Hyukjae wanted.... for a reason.

    Donghae frowned as he opened the book and began reading the first few words on the page. "Here," Hyukjae said as he took the book from Donghae's hands. "I'll read it for you." He smiled at the younger before opening the book and reading the title before starting, "To Kill a Mocking Bird, by Harper Lee. Don't laugh at my accent, got it?" Hyukjae warned before flipping to the first chapter. "When I was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow...."

    Hyukjae continued to read the book as Donghae rested his head against the others shoulder. His arm slowly snuck around Hyukjae's before linking them at the elbows, pressing in close while still making sure to give the other room to flip the pages. Hyukjae couldn't help but pause when he looked down to see Donghae smiling happily with his eyes closed, waiting to hear the next few words of the book. "I could do this everyday you know," Hyukjae said suddenly, "Like read to you and stuff.. it's kinda fun."

    Donghae nodded as sat up and gave Hyukjae an unsuspecting kiss. 'Why aren't you finished with the first chapter yet?' Donghae signed before going back to his ious position.

    'You will never need a voice, Donghae.' Hyukjae thought to himself as he continued to read aloud to Donghae. 'As long as you can find a way to tell me you love me, voices don't matter.'
