Candles were lighting up the features on the faces of the people around you. Smiles were smothered all over them and you tried to keep your reaction airy and soft as you shoved the food on your plate from left to right. The last thing you wanted was to be impolite, but you couldn’t help it. His family had been nice enough to invite you over for a dinner in a cosy restaurant. It wasn’t new, you had been in a relationship with Baekhyun for quite a while now, but you still felt honored every single time the asked you along. You knew how much they loved going out as a family, since they didn’t get to see each other often. That you were counted into that small and close circle of people made you feel wonderful and accepted. But no matter how much you tried, you hadn’t been able to act like the beloved daughter in law you usually were. So far his parents had left you to it when you had told them that you’d had a rough week at work and that you were tired. But you could see the glances his mother shot you every once in a while, though she kept pressed together and she didn’t say anything about it you could practically see the gears turning inside of her head as you tried to figure out what was really wrong with you. You were a cheerful person who loved to eat and spend nights out with people you cared about, this wasn’t like you. 

The truth was, that you felt terrible, but you weren’t going to admit that to anyone. The night would be ruined if you would let anyone in on that secret, because you knew how your boyfriend would react as soon as he would find out that you weren’t well. He would rush you straight home, without further discussion and you knew that this family dinner was important to him. You hadn’t felt quite like yourself since this morning, but you had been able to handle it until a few hours ago. Your stomach was upset because of something, but you didn’t know if it was because of something you ate or because of some nasty virus that was trying to take over you. Every single time you lowered your eyes towards your foot you felt like throwing up, and you had to press your lips together into a thin line to prevent it. usually, during moments like these you prevented getting in contact with any sources of food, but now it was inevitable. Instead of telling him before you left you were now sitting here, trying to make it seem as if you were enjoying yourself while you would rather be in bed, curled up underneath the sheets. But one couldn’t always have what they wanted. Seeing that everyone finished their meal you dropped your cutlery onto your plate and tried to act as if you were completely full, though your food remained barely touched. 

Beside you Baekhyun was cheerfully talking to his brother, his arm draped loosely around the back of your chair. He seemed so happy to be here tonight, and you weren’t going to ruin that if you could prevent it. You’d just have to be strong for a little longer, and then you could go home and take some meds, which you should have done before you’d left. “Does anyone want dessert?” The waitress asked as she stood at the head of the table, menu’s in hand and a bright smile on her face. You were sure they loved it as a large group of people came over to eat a three course meal at their restaurant, it meant extra tips. To your surprise everyone seemed to agree eagerly, and normally you would have been one of them. You lived for desserts, even if you were full you would order one. Desserts didn’t go towards the stomach, they went straight for the heart. But you were sure that if you would force one more spoon of food through your throat that you would ruin the beautiful table decorations, and you didn’t want that. So when she neared you to hand you one of the menu’s, because clearly you even looked like one of those girls who was always in the mood for something sweet, you friendly declined. Her smile didn’t falter for even the slightest second as she went over towards the next person and you sighed as you closed your eyes for a second and ran your hand across your hair. A night out had never seemed to last this long before. 

“Hey, are you okay?” Baekhyun’s smooth voice tickled the side of your face, his lips brushing against your ear as he tried to catch your attention. When you turned your head to him you could see the wrinkles on his forehead, caused by his eyebrows meeting in the middle of his face in concern. Immediately you wished you could wipe that expression off, tonight wasn’t the occasion for worry. “Yes, or course. Why wouldn’t I be?” You asked, grabbing a hold of your glass of water and tipping your head back to take a big gulp. Luckily you hadn’t chosen for a glass of wine, you were sure you wouldn’t have been able to handle the alcohol much better than you would have been able to handle the food. “You’ve been so quiet all evening, you barely touched your food. Tell me, what’s wrong?” Your eyes widened slightly at his words. You’d been convinced that his attention hadn’t been on you during the last half an hour since he had been in mingled in a deep conversation with his brother’s wife. But he always noticed much more than he seemed to show. Baekhyun knew you, inside and out, and he always seemed to sense more
