The King of the Seas had a beautiful daughter who was as beautiful as a black pearl but had a "dark black" heart, earning the nickname "Black Pearl". The reason was simple. She had many suitors. One suitor after another left empty-handed, disappointed with broken hearts. The King was aware of this, but kept quiet. 

They lived in an underwater kingdom, hidden from mankind's eyes.

The Black Pearl's real name was Eun-Joo. One day, Eun-Joo finds a heavily injured pirate holding onto a barrel floating on the water. Never seeing a. Human before, she was fascinated and nursed the pirate back to health. However, during that long period of recovery, Eun-Joo developed feelings for the pirate. She gave him everything--love, treasure, and most of all, her attention. The pirate, lowandbehold, also fell for Eun-Joo. But the pirate loved adventure and his ship more than anyone or anything and planned to leave. 

News of this spread throughout the underwater kingdom. The king was furious. He punished both his daughter and the unfortunate pirate, who died. However, Eun-Joo saved the pirate from actually "dying". Mermaid tears were made of magic like the creatures themselves. One teardrop from the mermaid princess dripped onto him, becoming a black pearl. The black pearl grew like a force field around the corpse, carrying the body and his possessions onto the safest and nearest island. There, the pirate started a new life as an infant with no or little memories of his previous life. 

Eun-Joo was taken to an island devoid of life.(except for trees and so on) She knew that if the pirate truly loved her then he will come back for her. And so the Black Pearl waits.
