Chapter 1

Tell Me Now

Baekhyun entered the city library and smiled sheepishly to the librarian before quickly pacing towards the culinary section in the deserted area of the first floor of the building. His eyes gleaming and his smile became wider as he stepped his foot in the area and inhaled the scent of fresh autumn wind breezing from outside the library. The yellow pages of rows of culinary books matched with the color of the trees outside which were turning orange. The autumn was coming and Baekhyun was very excited. Autumn was the season when his mood was on its best because the weather wasn’t so freaking cold like winter and not that hot like summer. The results of his experiments in cooking were much better when he was in a good mood. He didn’t know whether or not moods affected the results of other people’s cooking too or it was just him but that was the fact.

The little boy picked some books of traditional desserts from some countries he scheduled to read before pulling a white chair in his favorite spot beside the large window. Not many people liked to visit the culinary section of the library hence the love of Baekhyun’s for this place. His favorite seat was always empty so he could always sit there whenever he liked. His eyes swept the street outside and spotted the usual tall man in black standing in the sidewalk in front of a florist across the library. He wasn’t an employee of the florist because he was practically doing nothing except standing there and watching cars and waves of people crossing the street. He was the tallest man Baekhyun had ever seen in his life. He was about 6 feet tall and his long thin hands were always kept in his pants pockets. Baekhyun noticed that the tall man was always standing there at about 3 to 4 p.m everyday. He was always in black, or the shades of black. His eyes were focused on the middle of the crosswalk and it was radiating a profound sadness that Baekhyun always felt a little bit sad after seeing the man. Baekhyun felt himself dragged to a misery inside the man and found him frowning and letting out a deep heavy breath to pacify himself. The calm demeanor didn’t hide the waves of emotions in his large catlike eyes. Despite the too thin long body and limbs veiled with black clothes, the beauty of the tall man wasn’t hidden from Baekhyun’s eyes. His, surprisingly brown, hair was covering his forehead and reaching his brows. He looked cute and beautiful and sad and everything that somehow Baekhyun wanted to run across the street to caress his cheek and hug him tight so that he could know there was someone willing to hear the stories behind his sadness and help him to exchange it with happiness.

Baekhyun huffed to calm himself down and glanced at the man for the last time before went back to his books. He forced a small smile and opened the books before drowning himself in the world of chocolates and puddings and sweets and sugar.

When he was done reading and taking some notes, he glanced outside and frowned when he found the tall man wasn’t there. Baekhyun rested his head on his folded arms on the table and shook it, feeling wrong with himself because he felt so sad when he couldn’t find the man in the crowd. He lazily rolled his head to the side, unfolded his left arm and glanced at his wristwatch. It was past four and that was why the tall man was already gone. He stood up, gathered his books and slipped it back to its place before leaving the library for his afternoon shift in the coffee&tea shop he was working at.

--

The bell above the door jingled when Baekhyun opened it and revealing pastries and cakes arranged in cute transparent counters. Tao immediately saluted him with two fingers and flashed that big smile he only gave to his lovely hyung right after spotting the older. Baekhyun waved casualy to acknowledge Tao and walked to the waiter, hips brushed against the counter edge in process and hissing, earning a snicker from Tao. “No, Taozi, no laughing to your injured hyung.” He flicked Tao’s forehead and snickered back when the younger pouted.

“Badmood today?” Tao asked before went back to paying attention to the customer in front of him.

“Huh?” Baekhyun huffed. “A bit. Is it that obvious?”

Tao simply rolled his eyes. “Why? It’s autumn and aren’t you supposed to be very excited you can dance all around the kitchen like you declare these days?”

Baekhyun was taken aback. He didn’t even know why he wasn’t in a good mood. Okay, maybe he knew. It was because of the tall man in front of the florist outside the library but he had never felt that badmood before just because of him. Baekhyun shrugged, saying “It’s adult’s problem Taozi.” before walking to the kitchen. He could hear Tao snorting and murmuring “Whatever, Bacon.” and stressing every syllable, knowing Baekhyun hated the nickname so much.

Baekhyun just changed his clothes to the employee’s uniform and wearing his apron when Tao poking his head into the kitchen. “Baekhyun hyung!” His hand swayed a paper that must be an order from the customer. “Take this!”

Baekhyun took it and read the order. His brows curled before it arched and his smile played on his face. “’Anything can make me happy’? That’s the order, Taozi?”

“Yeah. Weird, huh?” Tao tilted his head folded his arms in front of his face.

“Not at all.” Baekhyun smirked and hit Tao’s head with the paper. “Get back to work.” He watched Tao walking back to the counter and started taking notes of some young moms’ orders with their children on their hands. Baekhyun could portray the image of the oh-so-cool grin Tao liked to flash to woman customers that he claimed could make many noonas go wild and got himself annoyed by it. He simply shrugged and shook his head then waltzing back to the kitchen.

Instead of bewildered with the weird order, Baekhyun felt challanged and he felt his heart racing because of the excitement. He wanted to see what kind of person ordering such an unusual thing like this. Wanting to see how pathetic was the person ordering this, to be precise.

Baekhyun leaned his slender body to the kitchen counter, thinking about what he should serve for the special guest. He surely had tried cooking many kinds of foods, but his specialty was in dessert. The first thing came to his mind was a plate of orange pannacotta with mixed berries froyo and a cup of iced green tea. Those were his comfort foods he always spared some times in weekends to make and eat it alone in his apartment while burying himself in a thick blanket and reading some books. Just the thought of making his favorite dessert could make him smile so he made up his mind and decided to make it for the special unexpected guest.

--

Baekhyun skillfully kicking the kitchen door slowly to open it while balancing a tray of orange pannacotta and iced green tea in his hands. He intended to serve the dessert himself, wanting to see the person ordering it, a little bit straying from his deskjob as a chef but still completely okay. He wanted to introduce himself as the one making the dessert and delivered his sincere wish that whoever ordering it would be happy and forgetting his stress for a while. Tao approached Baekhyun right after he saw the chef bringing the tray, but only to be snatched back right after he took it over from the smaller.

“I’m serving it myself.” Baekhyun said without even looking at Tao. He turned his head to the left and right looking for the possible customer ordering that.

“It’s okay Hyung you can go-“ Tao answered only to be cut off by Baekhyun.

Baekhyun made a face to Tao and gripped the tray harder in his hands. “No, Taozi. I’m doing it myself. Who’s ordering this? I wanna see.”

Tao sighed and relented, turned around and pointed at a man in black sitting beside a large window. “The one over there. You see? He seems so gloomy.” He frowned.

Baekhyun saw the guy and the familiar feeling immediately came to his heart. “Th- that one in black?” His gaze wavering. He couldn’t understand why he suddenly didn’t want to do what he was going to do after seeing the customer. He was afraid, afraid that he couldn’t make him happy as he expected himself to be. The man was the same man he saw everytime he went to the library, which was very frequent, who was radiating a profound sadness from his eyes. The man looked so painfully beautiful with the afternoon sunlight bathing him through the large window. He rested his head in his palm while seeing outside the cafe and Baekhyun still could see the sadness in his eyes. His mood which was just coming back after baking the dessert suddenly vanished only by seeing the man. “Uh, Tao.” He croaked. “You can do it for me right? I- I have things to do in the kitchen.” He passed the tray to Tao who stared at him in confusion and turned back before Tao could answer.

Baekhyun found himself couldn’t face the man. He was just feeling really uneasy after seeing the usual sad eyes, too much for his liking. He leaned into the kitchen counter and took a deep breath, shut his eyes tight and rubbed his face. Somehow he wanted to wash away the misery in the man’s face but when he had chance, he instead backed out and being a coward just because he was afraid. He felt a rush of guilt in his heart because he felt obliged to make the man happy, but he was just being coward for not being able to face him.

The chef tried to make himself busy in the kitchen doing unnecessary things so that he forgot about the man in black. After some times, Baekhyun couldn’t help but wanting to see the man, wanting to see whether the dessert could really make him happy. He threw the ladle in his hand to the sink which made a loud clinking noise and run his hand through his hair, frustrated. He stealthily walked to the kitchen door, and peeked through the glass. The man in black was no longer in his seat and Baekhyun sighed sadly before sweeping his eyes to the cashier area. He spotted the man talking to the the cashier guy, Lay, and a small smile played on his face even though it still couldn’t overpower the misery in his beautiful eyes. Baekhyun found himself smiling too at the view of the man. His smile was beautiful even though it was veiled with a gloomy aura that seemed to follow him whenever he went. He wondered how beautiful was the smile if his eyes were also smiling along with his lips.

--

His shift was over and he helped his fellow cafe employees to clean up before closing the cafe. From his peripheral vision he could see Lay walked over to him with a smile and Baekhyun glanced at him, smiling back before focusing himself back to sweeping the floor. “What is it Lay?” He asked without looking at Lay, continuing sweeping the floor.

“Nothing. It’s just one of our customers.” Baekhyun could hear the smile on Lay’s voice.

He paused the sweeping and paid his attention fully to the chinese. “Uh. Yeah. Okay.” Baekhyun puzzled, he didn’t have any idea why one of the customers had something to do with him.

“It’s the man ordering the ‘anything can make me happy’ thing. You remember?”

Baekhyun slowly nodded, confused. “Yeah.” He drew the word longer. “How could I not remember?"

“He said that your orange pannacotta and iced green tea were really delicious and he could smile a little bit because of that. And he said thanks.” Lay patted his shoulder and smiled sincerely then turned around and went back to doing anything he was doing.

He could feel his cheeks became warmer. He was smiling from ear to ear, feeling extremely touched by the appreciation from the man, and that he was feeling happy, even though just a little bit, because of Baekhyun.

--

It had been a whole two months since the first day the man in black came to the tea&coffee shop. He came to buy the same order thrice a week after that, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and Baekhyun still could see him in the library too. Even though he could see him frequently, Baekhyun still didn’t have a gut to approach the man, telling him he was the one making the orange pannacotta and iced green tea and that he always saw him standing in the same spot in front of the florist everytime Baekhyun visited the library.

Baekhyun didn’t even know his name, not to mention the reason behind his profound misery in his beautiful eyes. As much as Baekhyun wanted to wash away the sadness in him, he already felt contented with a small smile flashed on his face everytime he left the tea&coffee shop after eating the dessert.

Nevertheless, his heart would ache everytime he saw him standing in the same place across the library with sadness in his eyes on the other days.

--

It was just another autumn day when Baekhyun sat on his favorite seat in the city library with stacks of culinary books on the table in front of him. Today was a little bit colder than usual because it was almost the end of the season, making Baekhyun get a slight headache, red nose and his asthma which made him hard to breathe. He rubbed his temple to ease the pain slightly while watching the usual man standing in front of the florist. Baekhyun couldn’t help but frowning a bit when he saw the tall man hugged himself, clearly feeling cold without decent clothes to warm his skinny body. Seeing the man standing there alone in the middle of the crowd, watching waves of people crossing the street while hugging himself making Baekhyun shiver a bit. He didn’t want to think how the tall man was feeling at that time. A wave of symphaty once again washed up Baekhyun’s heart, but he just didn’t have a gut to approach him, not to mention talking to him.

But God had decided his fate. Baekhyun managed to talk to the man that day. It was when he crossed the street and people around him squeezed him and he couldn’t breathe properly. His asthma had taken its toll on him and he tried his best to catch his breath to no avail before he fell to the ground. He managed to support his body with his trembling hand, tried to take off his backpack to take his inhaler from the place he remembered by heart. When he got his inhaler in his palm, his vision was blur and he felt way too weak, couldn’t get to put his inhaler in his mouth. His body just falling forward weakly and he shut his eyes tight, preparing himself to hit the cold asphalt, but instead he felt a soft solid thing which was no way could be the hard asphalt halting his falling. A few seconds later he could process what he was falling on which happened to be a chest. He was grateful to whoever catching him and keeping him from hitting the hard street and getting bruises on his face. Baekhyun planted his cheeks on the man’s chest, couldn’t move even an inch and then his inhaler was put on his lips. He opened his mouth gratefully and took a deep breath to inhale the medicine. His breathing slowly became steady and that was when he realized that he and his life-saver were still in the middle of the street making a scene. He blushed a little and sat up straight slowly, looking to the man who was just helping him out. The tall man in black was in front of him, smiling to him but a hint of worry  was apparent in his eyes. He was his life-saver. Now Baekhyun felt useless. He had always wanted to be the one helping him out from whatever his problem was but he was the one being helped here. Baekhyun averted his eyes from him and felt his cheeks heated even more and he tried to stand up, wanting to get out of the scene as soon as possible but his ankle was betraying him. His right ankle was sprained during his falling and it hurt like hell. After couldn’t breathe properly, now he couldn’t walk properly. Great just great.

“Are you okay?” Baekhyun could hear the question from the tall man but oh his voice was so deep and cool and y and he was even more beautiful close up. But shoot he couldn’t focus on those things now, so he just shook his head blankly.

“I- I think I sprained my right ankle.” He winced when he felt the pain was getting more hurting when he said that.

“Okay but we’re really making a jam here so I think we should walk to the sidewalk.” The tall man was staring at Baekhyun with curled brows, clearly trying not to be panicked. “Can you walk with your left foot? I’ll help you.”

Baekhyun nodded and then he could feel the tall man’s hands around his forearm, helping him to stand up after swinging Baekhyun’s backpack on his shoulder then supported most of Baekhyun’s weight to help him walk to the sidewalk. The smaller man blushed furiously now that he could feel the warmth from the other sipping through numerous clothes he wore. He wanted to stop the blush but another thing he could think of was the pain and he’d rather feel the blush creeping up from his neck to his ear than feeling the stinging pain in his ankle.

They stood in the sidewalk in front of the florist. People were no longer watching them and starting to continue whatever they were doing before. Baekhyun stood still, supported with one foot and his life-saver’s hands hovering over his sides, ready to catch him if he fell. “Should we go to a clinic? There must be one around here.” The tall man asked Baekhyun with eyes full of concern. “We could hail a taxi if you didn’t want to walk.”

“No, I’m okay.” Baekhyun tried his best to smile even though the pain was getting worse. The cold weather wasn’t helping at all. It only made the pain added up.

Apparently, Baekhyun had a very bad luck that day. A group of school boys were passing them with their loud laughter, one of them brushed Baekhyun’s shoulder and made him lose his balance a bit. Baekhyun put his weight on his right foot to keep him from falling and the pain immediately shot up from his ankle to his whole right foot. The tall man had his hands on Baekhyun’s waist to keep him from falling.

“Hey watch out!” He shouted to the school boys before turning his attention back to Baekhyun. “Seriously we should go to a clinic now. We need to do something to ease the pain.” The tone was final and Baekhyun couldn’t say no to this one because he himself couldn’t stand the pain.

“Okay.” Baekhyun answered quietly, biting his lips hard to keep him from whimpering.

The tall man hailed a taxi and helped Baekhyun climb inside, then told the driver to go to a clinic near the area. They were silent and Baekhyun couldn’t stand the awkwardness. He racked his brain to say something but the tall man was the first one to break the silence.

“Um, I don’t know your name?” The tall man staring at Baekhyun questioningly. They just realized that they hadn’t even introduced themselves.

“Baekhyun. Byun Baekhyun.” He said, smiling. “And you?”

“I’m Park Chanyeol. You can call me Chanyeol.” He smiled back. The kind of smile which was very calm and sincere but Baekhyun knew that wasn’t happiness behind it. Nevertheless, Baekhyun couldn’t help but blushed upon seeing the smile. He averted his gaze from Chanyeol and ducked his head, hiding his embarrassment.

“How could you fall in the middle of the street? Are you sick? It’s very dangerous you know. A car could’ve just hit you.” Chanyeol frowned. “You should take care of yourself. You should’ve just stayed home instead of going out if you weren’t feeling well.”

Baekhyun was taken aback by the sudden nagging. “I- I’m sorry.” He felt his heart warming though. It was good to be taken care of by someone sometimes. “It was just.. Today.. Today was a little bit colder than usual and my asthma relapsed. I didn’t think walking in the crowd would make it worse, and then it was just happened.”

Chanyeol sighed and scratched his nape. “I’m sorry.. for nagging.” Baekhyun didn’t miss the blush on Chanyeol’s face. It was pretty cute. “But really you should’ve just stayed home.”

“Yeah you’re right Chanyeol.” He smiled upon hearing Chanyeol’s words. “But you too should’ve wore more decent clothes. It’s so cold outside. I saw you shivering and hugging yourself. You must be cold. Am I right?”

“How could you-”

“I see you from the library. Everytime I visit the library I see you standing there doing nothing.” Baekhyun cut off. “And I can see your sadness too, Chanyeol.“ He said it inwardly and sighing quietly. “Remember to wear jacket when it’s cold outside. Okay?”

Chanyeol didn’t say anything.

--

“Thanks, Chanyeol.” Baekhyun shrugged  and brought his crutches beside his body. They were in front of a clinic and Baekhyun was pouting. Besides having to take bitter analgesics to ease the pain, he also had to use crutches to help him walk because he couldn’t use his left foot at all. The fact that he would use the crutches for about a week was only making him even more irritated. He had to call out sick to the cafe even though he hated it when he had to tell his angelic boss, Junmyeon, about the little incident and got an earful to take better care of himself. Being the angelic boss he was, Junmyeon ended up giving him a week furlough and Baekhyun would be practically doing nothing in his apartment.

“No problem Baekhyun. Don’t pout, you’ll get used to using it eventually. It must be troublesome at first but it’ll help you much you know.” Chanyeol reached his hand to ruffle Baekhyun’s hair.

Baekhyun couldn’t help but blushing at the little action. “You yourself know it’s troublesome.”

“And I also said you’ll get used to using it eventually.” Chanyeol flashed the usual calm smile. The smile, as usual, didn’t reach his eyes but he was thankful that the other man still did that to comfort him. “It’s getting colder Baekhyun. I think you should go home now. You know cold can double up the pain.”

Baekhyun could feel the dissapointment in his heart, knowing that he had to go home and couldn’t see Chanyeol until at least a week later. He nodded. “Yes Chanyeol. You should too.”

“Want me to hail a taxi for you?”

“No it’s okay. My apartment isn’t that far from here. I can walk and get myself used to the crutches.” Baekhyun tried to convince himself walking for fifteen minutes to his apartment wouldn’t be troublesome.

“Are you sure you’re strong enough to walk?” Chanyeol looked at Baekhyun with eyes full of concern. The smaller man just smiled, hoping that would reassure Chanyeol. “Okay then. I’ll hail a taxi for myself. Take care Baekhyun.”

“You too Chanyeol. Thanks again.” He smiled and saluted Chanyeol before turned around reluctantly.

--

Chanyeol opened the door to Kyungsoo's room. The sight of his lover lying weakly on the hospital bed always made him want to cry. But he tried to be strong in front of him, trying his best not to frown even though Kyungsoo couldn’t even see him. Kyungsoo had been in a coma for three months. Cables, pipes and needles were attached to his small body which made people wince everytime they saw it. But for Chanyeol, that was okay as long as Kyungsoo could still breathe.

“Babysoo~!” He greeted cheerfully as he walked in. Chanyeol pulled a chair beside Kyungsoo’s bed and sat there. “How are you today? I’m sorry I’m a little bit late. Okay, okay, not just a little bit. I’m very late and I’m sorry okay, don’t nag at me.” He stopped for awhile, as if waiting Kyungsoo to answer him. He sighed quietly and continued. “I helped someone before I go here Kyungsoo. He was falling in the middle of the street when he was crossing it. You know, the intersection beside you favorite city library. He sprained his ankle and I brought him to a clinic nearby. Don’t be jealous because I’m just a super kindhearted person to leave him alone with his sprained ankle, okay?” He smiled weakly.

“Here I got you flowers so don’t be mad, please. You like roses right? I bought you twelve. You know why? Because twelve is your birth date. Aren’t I genius?” Chanyeol giggled. He reached Kyungsoo’s hand and kissed it sweetly. “You have to wake up before the flowers wither, okay?”

Chanyeol felt his eyes pricked, a tear threatened to trickle. He shut his eyes tight for awhile, trying to stop the tears. His hold of Kyungsoo’s hand tightened a bit and he brought it to his lips, kissing it again before he opened his eyes. Chanyeol smiled cheerfully again, standing up and reached his hand to brush the hair on Kyungsoo’s forehead.

“I’m going now, baby. Take care, okay? Be nice to your doctor.” He chuckles, focused his gaze to his lover’s face. “I love you.” He leaned down and kissed Kyungsoo’s forehead, closed his eyes and savored the moment.
