Visit            With a deep sigh, Jaemi quietly closed the door behind her and leaned against the wood as she recalled what just had happened. She knew Mina didn’t mean to bring up this painful subject and they can’t always walk on egg shells around her, she understood that. That Jongin had no parents as well came as a surprise to her but then again, there was a lot she didn’t know about him yet.              “Jaemi?”              The girl opened her eyes and spotted her uncle whose head had popped up from behind the living room wall. She gave him a tired smile. “I wasn’t expecting you back so soon,” he looked at his niece worriedly as he spoke. Jaemi crinkled her eyebrows and rubbed the sides of her head. “I had a headache again so I went home.”              Bomin walked towards her wearing a concerned expression and took her schoolbag from her. He left it next to the staircase before he palmed Jaemi's forehead. She didn’t feel very warm but he didn’t want to take any chances. “I’ll schedule an appointment with the family doctor. Maybe there’s something wrong,” he remarked and dropped his hand from Jaemi’s head. The girl nodded defeated because she knew nothing would make him change his mind of making an appointment, and as Bomin turned to walk to the living room again, he held out his hand for Jaemi to take. She gladly accepted it and followed him to the kitchen where he had prepared a meal for the both of them.              It was like this ever since she has moved in with him and it were these moments that Jaemi enjoyed the most. It felt like she had a certain hold on life again; a grasp that had loosened after the passing of her parents. Her uncle seemed to help her see things in a positive light again and filled the space that her parents had left behind.              “How was school?” Bomin asked when he was placing the filled plates on the dining table. Jaemi set down the drinking glasses and a carafe of water. “It was good, definitely better than yesterday,” she nodded and checked the table whether something was missing. Her uncle smiled at this and hummed in response, feeling relieved that things were looking up for her. They took a seat and ate the prepared meal in silence, only the occasional clattering of the utensils against the plates as they came in contact with each other.              This gave Bomin the time to appreciate what he had left of his sister. His eyes ran down Jaemi’s calm face, taking in her familiar features. She had her mother’s bone structure and the same little button nose that always turned red when Fall came around. Traces of the calm and reserved expression that Bomin and, of course, her mother held were evident in her eyes and the way always seemed relaxed yet pouty. The elegance in which she moved herself also closely resembled his sister’s manners.              It seemed like this family’s gene was strong because features of her father were barely there. Her father always loved that though because, even though they didn’t look alike on the outside, the inside was like two drops of water. The fiery and ambitious personal aspects seeped through her usually reserved and quiet personality whenever she’d be in a heated argument with anyone—nine out of ten times they would back away because she was very adamant and hard to persuade.              With all these familiar features, Bomin felt at ease. It was true, he missed his sister very dearly and that was only logical because his own flesh and blood was taken away from him far too early. On top of that, his brother-in-law and he were like two peas in a pod, so when he heard that his brother had died along with his sister, his world came tumbling down.              But there was this little light speck in the darkness—a light that seemed to pull him out of his misery and kept him from dying alongside his beloved family.              “Uncle, are you okay?”              Jaemi’s voice snapped Bomin out of his thoughts and made him look at his niece. A gentle smile found his lips when he read her concerned eyes. These eyes were the ones that kept him going.              “I’m okay, Jae,” he nodded at her food and showed her a teeth-rich smile with crinkles forming at his eyes.              “Eat up, before it gets cold.”         To: Mina-banana I have to go to the hospital today for a check-up so you can just go to school with Yixing Sent—07.23 AM   From: Mina-banana Hey! Are you okay?! Why didn’t you tell me earlier! I wanted to go with you! Received—07.24 AM              Jaemi grinned at Mina’s quick response and stood up from her bed to grab her tote bag as she texted her back.   To: Mina-banana I’m fine, just some regular things! Pshh, like you mind ;p Sent—07.26 AM              Jaemi waited for Mina to respond but it took her friend longer, so she took a last glance at herself in her mirror before moving downstairs. Her phone chimed when she was almost in the hallway, signaling that she had received another text.   From: Mina-banana …I’m gonna ignore that. Received—07.30 AM              The girl chuckled at her answer and continued to walk down the last steps into the hallway. Bomin was already waiting for Jaemi, wearing his brown trench coat and hat even though it was fairly warm outside. He smiled at her approaching figure and asked if she had her patient card. Jaemi checked her things a last time before nodding and walked towards the front door with her uncle right behind her.                    It wasn’t that Jaemi was scared of hospitals, that she felt jitters in her stomach. It was more like she didn’t exactly have the best memories of the place and rather not be there again. Bomin parked the car and inhaled deeply before releasing the built up air.              “Are you sure you don’t need me to come with you, Jae?” he asked as he side-eyed his niece for a moment. She looked through the windshield at the impressive gray building in front, towering over them like an angry parent over their child. Her palms began sweating and her heart rate increased by the second but she didn’t let it get to her. Clamping her hands onto the hem of her blouse, Jaemi took a few deep breaths to calm herself and nodded.              “Jae?”              She composed herself and put on a brave face for her uncle. “I’ll be fine, it won’t take long anyways,” she answered with a smile and leaned over the gear stick to kiss Bomin on his cheek. She squeezed his hand reassuring and slightly cocked her head. “Wait here for me?”              Bomin hesitated for a moment. The last time he visited this place, he had to identify three people; two lifeless bodies that were preserved in the morgue and one that was in life danger. To say that the man had good memories here would be a lie. The sound of the sirens back then were still ringing in his ears and the voices of the rushing doctors and nurses still haunted his dreams, as if it had planted itself in his mind and wanted to remind him of how delicate life was and how it could be
