When You Smile, Sun Shines.
Snuggled warmly on the couch with his friend Zitao, Sehun kept his eyes glued on the television screen as a sappy romance movie played out in front of their eyes. The two boys would laugh and joke about the cheesy storylines and how bad the actors were at acting. When the characters would cry, Tao would always point out how fake it looked, saying that he could surely do better. Sehun would simply laugh, watching the screen and nodding his head in agreement. At moments like these, the younger male realized that his heart was most content being here with Tao and it seemed to make all of his worries fade to dust. Taking his eyes off the television for a moment, he glanced over at Zitao and smiled, his eyes taking in all of the beautiful features of his friend’s face. He wished he could just touch his lips to his hyung’s soft skin without things being weird or jeopardizing their friendship. It was a desire he often dreamt about as he lay awake at night after coming home from a night of long schedules.
Knowing Zitao for over a year now, Sehun had grown very fond of his elder. He had realized that things had turned very quickly from friendship to something more. There were days when Sehun wished he had the guts to confess his feelings to the Tao but when it came down to actually doing it, he always chickened out. “Don’t be so stupid…Maybe he likes you back,” the younger boy thought to himself as he sighed softly. “If you don’t tell him, you’ll never know if he feels the same.” These badgering thoughts hounded his brain so loudly, he was sure it was echoing through the room by now.
Using all the courage in his small body, the boy tugged gently at the sleeve of Tao’s baggy sweater and smiled coyly when the elder looked down at him. When their eyes met, Sehun could feel a funny burning sensation in his chest, like his heart was going to explode. Tao’s eyes were just so beautiful; they were almost hypnotizing. And looking at his friend just now, Sehun knew he was staring into the face of an angel.
Having never been nervous like this before, Sehun could actually feel his body becoming weak, a flurry of butterflies fluttering around in his stomach. His face tinted a soft shade of carnation pink; he quickly looked down from the gaze, his mind and heart conflicting once again. After a small word of encouragement from his conscience, Sehun looked back up at Tao and blurted out the words he had been holding in for far too long:
“Huang Zi Tao, I love you, okay?”
His face now the deepest shade of red, the younger male bit his lip, regretting everything he just said. “Oh my God, he probably thinks I’m pathetic now,” he told himself, letting the inner demons of his mind convince him that he in fact shouldn’t have confessed to his hyung. How could Tao possibly ever love him back? They worked in a band of 10 other extremely attractive boys. What are the odds that Tao would go for a guy like him when he could easily get someone as charismatic as Wufan or as kind-hearted as Yixing? The blonde-haired boy released a deep sigh, now waiting to hear what Tao had to say about the sudden confession.
To his surprise, the Chinese boy smiled softly, and in a twist of fate, leaned in slowly and pressed his lips against Sehun’s, kissing him ever so sweetly. The sudden romantic gesture made Sehun sit in a state of temporary shock. His eyes fluttering shut slowly, the younger male took advantage of the moment and kissed his friend back, their lips gliding seamlessly over each others’ as if it was their sole purpose in life. The kiss seemed to last a thousand years before Tao pulled away and blushed softly. The pink tint on the Chinese boy’s cheeks gave a vibrant glow to his normally milky skin, causing Sehun to flash a smile in return. The boys sat silent for a split second, taking in what just happened before Tao’s soft voice broke the silence.
“You too?” It was all Tao could say as he gently s his arms around the younger boy’s waist, pulling him in closer. Everything seemed almost unreal to Sehun as his deepest desire was now becoming a reality. They looked into each other’s eyes a moment more, admiring the subtle hints of black and sienna entangled in the warm shades of brown that encircled their irises. Tao then leaned in to peck another soft kiss on the Korean boy’s lips before mumbling a string of words against them. “I love you too Oh Sehun. I was far too scared to ever tell you.”
With Tao’s sudden confession, Sehun now wrapped his arms around the other boy’s neck and kissed him back. The kiss was light-hearted but full of romance, the same feeling of love which the Korean boy felt for his elder. The two sat there for a while, kissing and holding each other, mumbling against each others’ lips and laughing softly at each others’ words. The world seemed to stop just for them. Pulling away from the long, passionate kiss, Sehun couldn’t help but smile, a small chuckle leaving his lips. A soft ray of light now poked through the curtains, lighting up the small area of the room where the boys were seated. As Zitao brushed a few small tufts of hair from Sehun’s face, he spoke kindly to the other.
“Oh Sehun, when you smile, sun shines.”
Tao’s sweet words caused a small smile to grace the lips of his friend, a gentle blush tinting his cheeks. The rays of light continued to shine upon them, making Tao’s warm brown eyes glisten as he gazed upon the younger boy. Sehun reached out and gently took Tao’s hands in his own, their fingers instinctively interlocking upon contact. The moment was simple but blissful, the mere presence of each other making the moment perfect.
On the couch in the middle of the EXO dorm room, the boys sat, enthralled in each others’ presence as the movie played in the distance, now acting as mere background noise. Without the two knowing, the movie they had made fun of so many times had now portrayed the feelings that filled both of their hearts; romance.
