Strange Codes.
Memories of Her.
The next morning Lay awoke in his homely little bedroom, sunlight streaming in through his window
and Ryeowook sleeping upright in the wicker chair beside his bed. Lay groggily opened his eyes,
before recalling the memory he gained from the night before. There was no way it was just some
hallucination, that was definitely something from his past and he knew now that the mysterious girl
had something to do with it. The tree of life was there in his memory, like it never left. Ryeowook
snorted and woke up abruptly, calling out for his mum and looking around the room. It took him a
few seconds to realize he was in Lay's room, before looking over to Lay, who was sitting upright in
his bed, still in the clothes he wore in the night before.
"Hey." He said casually, still sleepy. "How are you feeling?" Lay blinked twice and swallowed.
"I've been better..." He replied.
"Heh, I guess you would after that attack last night." Ryeowook smiled bitterly, his laugh more one of
pity than humour. He suddenly focused his attention to Lay's right eye, the place he had been punched
by the leader of the gang of thugs - Yongguk. "But man, you're lucky to get out like you did." He said,
bringing his long, slender fingers to brush over the bone. "You have almost no bruising... I would have
expected at least a black eye, but it's barely noticeable." Lay turned to look in the mirror on the opposite
wall and was taken aback. With the force that Yongguk hit him he expected his skin to break, but it almost
looked like all he had done was slap his forehead a little too hard.
"Weird..." Lay said, at the same time looking down at his hands. Lay put it down to his imagination that
the scars on his palms looked fainter than before. Maybe it was time, though. It had been little over a month
since the car crash that caused them, anyway.
"Oh yeah, and don't your parents have phones or something?" Ryeowook asked. "I wanted to call them
when we got you home last night, but you don't have their numbers..." Lay frowned, staring at his phone.
He picked it up and went through the contacts twice, but Ryeowook was right. It hadn't come up before,
that is, Lay hadn't given it any thought as he hadn't needed to call his parents in the last month, but that
was extremely strange. Why wouldn't he have his parents phone numbers? He put it down to location.
The letter from 'Suho and the gang' had said that they lived in a foreign country far away from him. It
annoyed him that they hadn't specified which country, but it made him think all the same as to what his
relationship with them was like.
"They live in a foreign country." Lay replied. "I think that's why I don't have their numbers, my phone can't
call them." Ryeowook nodded, looking around his room.
"Do you need anything?" He asked. Lay shook his head. Even if he did need something, he wouldn't trouble
Ryeowook for it. He was a guest in Lay's house after all. "Okay, I'm gonna go check on Yeonnie. See ya later
Lay!" He said cheerily, shutting the bedroom door behind him. Lay instantly sprung out of bed and over to
his desk, his fingers scrambling for a pen and paper. In his memory with the tree of life, there had been
multiple symbols repeating themselves over and over in his mind. He had no idea what they meant, but felt
determined to record each one. The first was resemblant of an hourglass, the next was the head of a beast,
and the next was an arrow-tailed scorpion. Lay scribbled them down with black marker, crayon, anything he
could get his hands on to try and draw them before he forgot any of them. Drawings soon littered his room as
he tried to perfect each one, symbols like drops of water, dragons, phoenix's - each one drawn and then thrown
to the floor. Each time Lay drew the symbols from his mind they would change mid way and end up combining
two, or making one out of proportion. He scribbled furiously at one that appeared in his head above all the
others, the one that appealed to him the most. A unicorn symbol stuck out to him, and he began to scribble it
down furiously while his mind was enveloped with Latin chants that made no sense to him. 'Diffideret
Mittendum, Diffideret Mittendum.' The chanting deafened him to the point of crying out, but his insanity was
broken within an instant by a hesitant voice from his bedroom door.
"Lay? Are you ok?" Hyoyeon asked from outside the door. "Ryeowook told me you were up." Lay sat
motionless for a few seconds, breathing in and out to calm himself.
"Did he go back to sleep?" Kyuhyun's voice whispered from outside the door.
"Come in." Lay replied, still sitting at his desk. Hyoyeon opened the door hesitantly, Kyuhyun peering around
the side at least a head taller than her. The two were silent for a second, before Hyoyeon bent down slowly
and picked up one of the thousands of drawing that littered the room.
"Lay..." She breathed, her eyes wavering in concern. "What happened? What did you do?" Kyuhyun looked
around the room in disbelief. Lay hadn't realized how many drawings he done, but the floor was no longer visible.
"I just... I remembered-"
"Lay please stop." Hyoyeon pleaded, her worry showing in her eyes. "You keep saying things about 'remembering'
and it's starting to scare us! We understand that you want to find out what happened before your crash, but it's only
been a month... So far all you've accomplished with this is getting beat up in the park, hallucinating about some
life-giving tree, and now these weird drawings are everywhere! Please Lay... Just leave it alone for a little. We need
the old you back." Hyoyeon didn't mean to have such an outburst but she was genuinely concerned about Lay's
mental and physical wellbeing. For the last month he hadn't exactly been normal, but at least he wasn't saying and
doing things that were worrying to his group of friends. Lay paused and took a deep breath, still staring straight ahead
at his desk.
"I'm sorry for worrying you guys..." He mumbled. "But I can't give up. Whoever those people were that attacked
me last night told me to give up on looking for her. She's real, and she's special in some way, there must be
some important reason for me to find out who she is if there are people who don't want me to!"
"So then just because people don't want you to kill someone that means you have to do it because of some
'special reason'?" Kyuhyun asked, taking the drawing from Hyoyeon. "Not every reason is a good one, and
if people are hurting you then it's probably not." Lay sighed. He knew his friends had a point, but he knew
he was right in that he needed to find out more. It was clear however, that he would have no further help from
his friends.
"I'm sorry guys, but thank you for checking up on me. I'm fine now."
"Fine isn't the word I'd use to describe you right now." Kyuhyun replied, ushering Hyoyeon out the door. "Get
dressed anyway, we're taking you to the doctors to get you checked out."
"But I don't need to go." Lay protested. "There's almost no bruising." Kyuhyun shut the door.
"Wookie's orders!" He called from the other side. 'Wookie's orders.' That always meant it was go or die listening
to Ryeowook complain about how no one ever listens to him. Lay sighed and stood up, taking his shirt off and
tossing it to the floor. There was minimal bruising on his stomach too, even though he had been kicked there a
few times. He shook his head and collected his thousands of drawings, shoving them in a shoebox under his bed.
He hoped maybe the doctors would have something to help him remember.
~*~*~
Ryeowook walked with his arm around Lay's shoulders the entire way to the doctors clinic.
"I'm fine Wookie." Lay said, gently taking Ryeowook's arm off him for the umpteenth time. Ryeowook
put his arm back around Lay's arm almost instantly.
"But what if you suddenly fall?" He asked. "I need to support you." Lay thinned his lips. At first it was
touching that Ryeowook cared so much, now it was getting annoying.
"Why don't you put your arm around that girl from your expensive shirt shop?" Kyuhyun asked slyly,
a grin making its way to his face.
"Yeah, how are things going with her?" Hyoyeon asked. "What's her name?"
"That 'expensive shirt shop' is called 'Pour Vous', and her name is Minri." Ryeowook replied. "But you
guys, it's not like -"
"CUTE!" Hyoyeon squealed. "Then 'Minri' is 'pour vous'!" She laughed. Ryeowook sighed and the
others face-palmed.
"Oh good we're here. Now we don't have to suffer through any more bad puns." Kyuhyun stated as they
arrived in front of the large 'City West Medical Clinic' sign. The four ascended the few stone steps
outside the clinic to the front door, going to sit in the waiting room.
They waited for a good 10 minutes before Lay's name was finally called, and he stood up.
"One of you should probably come with me, I don't even know why I'm here. I feel fine." The three
looked at each other for a while before Kyuhyun stood up lazily and sighed.
"Ugh fine, I'll go!" Lay smiled thankfully and walked through the hallway to one of the available rooms.
The doctor smiled to them as a greeting and told Lay to sit down on a chair near his desk.
"So what seems to be the problem?" He asked, putting the lid back on his pen and placing it next to
some paper. Lay stayed silent, only looking at Kyuhyun.
"We found him unconscious in the park last night after getting beaten up by a group of thugs." The
doctor looked surprised.
"Well then he's recovered remarkable quickly." He commented. "There doesn't seem to be any visible
bruising apart from a little redness around his left eye."
"I feel fine, doctor." Lay said.
"How hard did they hit you, son?" the doctor asked.
"Hard enough to knock him out." Kyuhyun replied, frowning in confusion. "Why doesn't he look like it
then? Maybe it's all internal bruising. The doctor hummed a reply.
"Lay, we may have to run a few tests. It is my understanding that your body may have an unusually high
mitosis rate." Lay nodded in reply. "I'll schedule them for same time next week, does that work for you?"
Lay nodded distantly again. Kyuhyun thanked the doctor and exited the room with Lay in tow. When
they reappeared to Ryeowook and Hyoyeon, all they heard was whispered arguments.
"Look, all I'm saying is maybe I don't like her that way!" Ryeowook shot at Hyoyeon.
"Of course you do! I see how red you get when you talk to her!" Hyoyeon replied, a grin plastered to
her face.
"Yeonnie! My face was so not red!" He said back, his face about to burst from frustration.
"It so was! Why won't you ask her out!?"
"Because I don't want to!"
"It's because you're too shy!"
"It is not!"
"Is too!"
"Is not!"
"Is to-"
"SHUT UP!" Kyuhyun roared over the two, making everyone else in the waiting room jump in fright.
Ryeowook and Hyoyeon looked terrified, but relaxed when they saw Lay.
"How was it?" Hyoyeon asked. "Everything ok?" Lay nodded.
"They're going to run some tests or something next week, something to do with my mitosis rate?" Lay
shrugged.
"That would explain why you have almost no bruises." Ryeowook said, nodding in agreement. He stood up,
offering a hand to Hyoyeon and opened the door for everyone.
"Let's go anyway." He said. "I hate the doctors." Ryeowook shivered as he thought of his last visit to the
doctors clinic involving multiple shots and tests that made him uncomfortable.
"I say we go out for lunch, get Lay out of his stuffy old room and out in the fresh air." Hyoyeon cheered. "All
that boy smell in his room is probably what made him go so crazy this morning!" Everyone laughed in
agreement, but Lay had forced his. He knew that he wasn't crazy this morning, nor at any other time. He knew
that all these strange and confusing things were important in some way, and those drawings were only
strange codes that needed deciphering.
