The Breaking

“They won’t hesitate to shoot you,” Jin said from where he stood beside the back door, peering out into the darkness of the back alleyway. “If a spotlight falls on you, you run as if your life depends on it.”   “Because it does,” Taehyung muttered, and Jungkook couldn’t help the tingle that went down his spine at those words.    “Hyung,” he said, clutching at Jin’s shoulder, “Can’t we stay here in The City? We could hide here, can’t we?”   The older boy turned to give him a quick hug. “This is the only way we can hope to be free, little one. Just… trust us. We’ve all escaped The City before. We only came back here to free you, so don’t worry. Move slowly and quietly and you’ll be fine.”   Came back for him? But how did they even know he existed? And why didn’t they rescue any of the other citizens held at The Block? Jungkook opened his mouth to ask the questions racing through his mind, but at that point Hoseok stepped forward and clapped a hand down onto his shoulder. “And remember, whatever you do, don’t fight back. Stopping to fight will only allow them the advantage of surrounding you.”   And leaving no room for questions, the healer opened the back door and slipped out into the night, hand grasping Jungkook’s to pull him along with him. The four strode the short distance to the gleaming black walls, the fear and curiosity warring in the youngest as he tried to understand how they were going to get out. Before he could think too long on it, though, Taehyung stepped to the front, grabbed Hoseok’s hand firmly as Jin took Jungkook’s, and then with a deep breath Taehyung stepped forward…   Into the wall and through the other side, pulling the others along behind him.   Jungkook gasped in amazement as he came out of the wall, the sound eerily loud in the stillness of the night. A hand clamped over his mouth and Hoseok shook his head, pointing upward toward the guards posted twenty feet or so above them. “Sorry,” he mouthed, and the healer nodded and with another glance above them, set off down the steep slope toward the treeline.   This night… this was like something out of a dream. First they walk through a solid wall with no problem, and then the landscape… he had never seen anything like this. There were no trees in The City, for the government insisted that color bred rebellion, and now to be confronted with such a huge expanse of thick forest was daunting. Jungkook came back to himself with a start, realizing that the other three had already started their slow descent from The City and were already a good ten yards in front of him.   Taking a careful step Jungkook moved forward, placing his feet in their footsteps to try and stay as quiet as possible. Hours of monotonous travel passed and Jungkook could feel the shift in the air, the slight lightening of the sky indicating an impending sunrise. He was still a good hundred yards from the treeline, though, Jin almost there and the other two already waiting for them with anxious faces. ‘I’m not going to make it,’ he thought, and just as that errant passed through his mind he heard a siren go up from The City.    Jin glanced once over his shoulder, concern etched onto his face, and motioned for Jungkook. “They’ve seen us! Run!” He broke into a run and lumbered his way to Hoseok and Taehyung before turning to watch the youngest’s progress.    Or lack thereof. As soon as Jin told him to run, Jungkook took one long stride forward and slipped on the snow, falling onto his back with a hard thump. As he scrambled to his feet he heard the rat-a-tat sound of machine guns and the unmistakable roar of high-powered engines as the soldiers bore down on him. He ducked with his arms over his head to protect himself and ran for his life, but it was to no avail.   He tripped once again in the snow and as he fell he saw Jin trying to push past the o
