Prologue;

Sehun was beyond shocked when the news broke.

It had been like any other day—it was cloudless, the sky above clear and blue, and the sun’s mild glare had embraced him with its heat as he stepped out of the van. His manager had ushered him quickly through the back entrance of the tall building because the press had been waiting since twenty minutes ago, and they just couldn’t afford to be late.

The suit he wore made his movement a little stiffer, and his dress shirt was sticking uncomfortably to his sweaty back, but Sehun can bear with that, at least for a couple of minutes or so. Fortunately, the press room was air conditioned. He fidgeted with the hem of his sleeve feeling nervous, yet excited. It was his first drama he’s starring after all. It wasn’t much, only a random role of a side-character named Park Jeonghwa.

Blinding white lights from cameras filled his vision as soon as he stepped inside the room, flashing his way and following his movements as he settled down behind the long table beside the other senior actors that had already arrived minutes before him.

Sehun smiled widely to the cameras and thinks finally.

Halfway down the press session, forty five minutes after he arrived to be exact, a lady with a neat bun and a phone clutched to her ears approached manager Hyun Kyun that stood behind him. Their conversation seemed serious, hushed, but Sehun could hear his manager’s frantic whispers as they strain to keep their voices low as to not interrupt the still ongoing press conference.

There’s a firm hand on his shoulder a few moments later and when Sehun looked up, Hyun Kyun is leaning forward to whisper something to his ears.

We’re going back to Seoul now. The other members went into a serious accident. We have to go right now.

Sehun’s mind had stopped working and his heart had stopped beating. When the information had sunk in completely, his hands tremble violently on his lap and Hyun Kyun had to prop him up into a standing position. Sehun couldn’t feel his legs.

The press conference was stopped momentarily and the staffs were rushing here and there. Sehun managed to get outside the building and to the parking lot, past the many fans waiting outside. Some of them were crying, some sending him words of encouragement.

‘I’m so sorry oppa.’ ‘Oppa, stay strong.’ ‘Sehun-Oppa fighting!’ ‘Oppa, please be safe.’

He managed to stumble into the passenger seat and fastened his seat belt, eyes still wide and face blank in tremendous shock.

The conference venue was two hours and fifty minutes away from Seoul. The whole journey was silent and tense, and over the sound of blood rushing to his ears, he heard his own desperate voice chiming in his head.

Please be safe. Please be safe. Please be safe.

Hyun Kyun glanced at him, expression just a little bit more calmer than Sehun’s and he placed a hand that’s not holding the steering wheel on Sehun’s shoulders and squeezed lightly, sending him a sad smile.

It’s going to be okay Sehun-ah.

It’s not.

(14/07/28. At 13:18 pm KST, South Korea’s rising boy band EXO, was involved in a serious car accident on their way to the opening of Lotte Duty Free held in Incheon . Lu Han, 24, who was injured severely, was the only survivor found in this tragic accident, and was taken straight away to the nearest hospital, while the remaining fourteen, which consists of 10 members including 4 staffs, had died instantly on the scene. Witnesses had said that a truck had crashed straight into the back of their bus, making it dive down into the steep slope. Polices were currently….)

Lu Han was the only survivor in the car accident.

Sehun was panting, tear tracks apparent on his pale, pale cheeks and breaths coming out in short rapid gasps when they finally reached the hospital. They were led instantly into the small room that Sehun assumed was the waiting room, which had blue plastic chairs lined against the wall and a table in the middle.

Hours had pass since they had sat waiting and the long minute hand of the wall clock was slowly approaching twelve. Fingers clasped and eyes shut tight, Sehun chanted, please, please, please, over and over again in his head.

His pleas were not granted.

The doctor pushed the heavy door and stepped in; shoulders sagged as he regarded them gravely.

I’m so sorry for your loss, he had said. He was already in a very weak condition when he arrived. We have tried our best.

His tone was dismissive, tinged with sympathy and with a final nod, he exited the small waiting room.

‘Oh’ Sehun breathed out shakily, the air he inhaled suddenly felt too painful in his chest, like it’s going to burst. A sob wrenched out his throat.
