The Downsides to Being PetiteWhenever someone asks me how old I am, they don't expect that I'm nearly 18 when they see a 5 ft tall Asian girl in thick rimmed, almost classic bookworm style, eyeglasses.
I was the sad child who was treated like some mystical unicorn after hitting their period earliest back in grade school. I was 9. I've grown an inch since then.
I don't know about anyone else, but my best friends since middle school have been tennis shoes, sneakers, and flipflops with a MINIMUM of 1 1/2 inch wedges. High heels are 6-inch platforms. Always.
Thankfully, I was blessed with small feet along with it so I can fit my feet into shoes ranging from size 5 to size 7, depending of what kind I'm looking for.
Sadly, this added height boost doesn't help much. Most people I know were giraffes in a past life, without a doubt.
(Lilian, you little jerk, how on Earth are we related? Give jiejie some of your height!)
There are two main reasons why I hate going clothes shopping at the mall here in the States.
One: Almost everything is too big. Shoes, shirts, dresses, pants, bras accesories. If it's not too big in the upward direction, it is outward, or both.
Dresses especially. Some of them look like they're made for people with legs the size of my whole body or s each the size of my head. I'd like to see an actual size 0 or 2 instead of 10s in the petite section, please. OTL It's embarrassing for someone my age to have to stop by the children's clothing area to buy undies that fit. Most of my clothes even now are just stretched-out clothes that I've been wearing since grade school or middle school.
And frankly, the 14/16 children's size pants I wear to sleep that I've had for years is still the biggest pair of pants I own... And it's still stretchy as hell.
CIRCO, Y U ONLY SELL THOSE IN TODDLER SIZE??
If possible, I'd like to propose a switch with those people with plus-sizes that I always see online complaining about clothes that don't cater to their shape.
THE CLOTHES EXIST! THEY'RE JUST BEING SHIPPED TO THE WRONG PLACE.
Two: It's dangerous as hell for us shorties down here in malls.
Now maybe this is just me, but I always hit myself in some part of the face or head on those bars for hangers that jut out when there aren't any clothes hanging off of them or there's only a few hanging close to the wall. I never seem to see them, probably because my line of sight is UNDER them. =__=;
In addition to that, I'm always afraid of cars not seeing me and backing over me when I'm in parking lots. In some cases, that's nearly happened but I try to go either forward or backwards to get out of the way faster when I see a car going towards me in reverse, or I hit the back of the car to get them to brake. Though I'm not too sure if this is because I'm short, or because there's too many Asian drivers around here...
...Frankly I'm just afraid of cars in general. Why do I even have a license?
So if anyone wants, you can tell me if you've had any moments like I do at the mall and maybe share my pain of being short.
Thanks for reading guise.
