Prologue

“Why do I have to leave when I haven’t done anything wrong?” Han Seul Mi cried out in frustration. She shook her head in disbelief. Her long radiant hair fell off her shoulders as she looked at the head teacher with her desperate big brown orbs.

She didn’t want to be left alone.

“You are lucky we aren’t going to expel you!” the head teacher stated. “I’m going to allow you to transfer so that you can get into another school without a fuss.”

A tear ran down Seul Mi’s cheek. How is she lucky when she is being forced to move to Seoul where she knew no one there? Is that called lucky? “What did I do wrong?” she whispered.

The head teacher jerked his head back when he saw the tears forming in her eyes. He really didn’t want to do this to one of his favourite students. “Don’t cry,” he pleaded. He took out his handkerchief from his inner suit pocket. “Here,” he handed the handkerchief to her.

Seul Mi looked down at the handkerchief in front of her, and then lifted her head up to look at the head teacher. She noticed the guilty expression on his face and realised this must be hard on him as well. She took the handkerchief from him and wiped away the tears. She sat up straight on the chair and regained her composure. “I guess it can’t be helped.” Seul Mi put on a reassuring smile. “Rich folks think they own everything and everyone,” she added even though she was a part of the ‘rich folks’ only she wasn’t a money spender or a spoilt rich kid.

It only made the head teacher feel worse. “Mianhae, it wasn’t your fault…” he quietly said, bowing his head in pity.

Seul Mi shook her head. “It’s okay.” She stood up. “I wish you all the best!” She bowed and then left the office.

She stepped outside the office and saw a large crowd of students. They all held a smug expression on their faces. Seul Mi kept her smile on her face forcefully. Her head was held high as she walked down the hallway. The students made a way for her. She didn’t look back. She didn’t say goodbye. She just walked out the building without feeling any regrets.

As she stepped out through the school gates a tear fell. But she didn’t stop. She walked forward for her new future ahead.

“You will start anew!” she told herself. “You will make new friends! You will do your best!” The more she spoke the more tears began falling freely. She couldn’t hold it back. She covered as she sobbed. “Han Seul Mi, don’t be scared!” she scolded herself. But she couldn’t help but be scared. She was going to be alone once again. She was scared she wouldn’t make any new friends. She was scared there would be no one there for her, to protect her.
