The First Step

Time in the Clinic

Time in the Clinic

The books in the library of Shoai High School have been gathering dust compared to other high schools, but in one small section of this forgotten place, Luhan was mindlessly drifting from bookshelf to bookshelf looking for a book to read to kill time. While carefully scanning the titles of the books without so much of a concern to his surroundings, Luhan suddenly felt the ground underneath his right foot to be a little softer than before and was shocked to see a tall boy with multicolored hair writhing in pain on the floor.

“Oh my god! I’m so sorry!” Luhan exclaimed, swiftly kneeling down to get a closer look at the boy who he just stepped on like a bug.

“It’s… okay,” the boy said with a light cough.

Luhan was not convinced since the boy was holding onto his stomach tightly. He helped the boy up and put the boy’s arm around his shoulders and carried him to the school clinic a few rooms away from where the library was. Luhan continuously apologized to the boy on the way to the school clinic, feeling very upset that he hurt someone he just met. The boy found this very amusing and smirked secretly at Luhan’s desperation, finding him very adorable and interesting.

They arrived at the clinic and opened the door to find a man sleeping with his head rested on his desk. Luhan helped the boy get onto one of the vacant beds in the room while he went to get the nurse to help with the boy’s injuries. Luhan called softly to the man sleeping on the desk but he was far away in dreamland. Luhan gave up after a few tries and decided to shake the man out of his deep sleep. The man finally woke up and Luhan explained the situation and asked the man to help treat the boy’s injuries. The man was uninterested and yawned before saying that he wasn’t a nurse and that he was just standing by for the day since the nurse had to go somewhere. The lazy man got up and handed Luhan a first aid kit and told him to help himself to anything in it. Luhan felt agitated at the man but he had to help the boy with his injury quickly, so he brushed it off and walked back to the bed the tall boy was lying down in.

When Luhan got back to the bed, he saw that the tall boy was wincing but didn’t groan or grumble at the pain he was feeling. Luhan searched inside the first aid kit for something to alleviate the boy’s pain, when heard a small laugh and turned his head to see the boy smiling at him. Luhan was taken aback by this and felt his heart skip a beat and turned back to the first aid kit to hide the fact that he was blushing.

“I think ice would be helpful in this situation, don’t you think?” Luhan heard the boy say, and felt incredibly embarrassed and stupid for not thinking of that. Luhan agreed with the boy and told him that he was going to go out to find some ice. As Luhan was leaving, he felt something warm wrap around his left wrist and turned back to see the boy holding his wrist. They stayed this way for two seconds before the boy let go and cleared his throat. Luhan stared at his wrist for a few little while before snapping back to reality and also cleared his throat.

“Um… It’s not that big of a bruise I think so rubbing some oil on it should be fine ‘til I get home,” the boy said,  pausing for a bit before continuing and asking what Luhan’s name was.

“Oh! Uh… It’s Luhan,” Luhan said, unable to understand why his face was feeling a little hot from just telling this boy his name.

The boy smiled kindly and replied saying that his name was Sehun. The two boys stared at each other and smiled. Sehun tried extending his hand for a handshake but felt a sudden jolt of pain which forced him to lie back down. This alarmed Luhan and he looked in the first aid kit for some oil and bandages. He helped Sehun to sit up on the bed and set the oil bottle and bandages on the bed. Luhan started ing Sehun’s shirt, not thinking anything of it until he reached the last button and pulled the shirt off of Sehun, exposing the muscles he bore on his chest and torso. Even covered with a blue-green bruise, it wasn’t hard for Luhan to see how ripped Sehun’s body was and he suddenly felt a little embarrassed to see Sehun sitting on the bed half from his doing. He contemplated what to do and decided that treating Sehun’s injury was more important than hiding his embarrassment. Luhan grabbed the oil on the bed, poured some on his right hand and kneeled in front of Sehun…

Looking at the top of Luhan’s head, Sehun couldn’t help but wonder how they ended up in such a strange position. He was half , with a boy kneeling in front of him rubbing oil on the bruise he got from carelessly sleeping on the floor of the library that afternoon. Sehun was starting to feel a little aroused from seeing Luhan kneeling in front of him and started thinking about strange things, until Luhan said his name and looked up at him with his big eyes asking if it was enough.

“Huh? Enough? Enough... what?” Sehun asked, with his mind still in the gutter.

Luhan pointed to the bruise and asked if he had given enough oil. Sehun felt blood rush to his face and felt ashamed for thinking such dirty thoughts from someone who was genuinely helping him. Sehun cleared his throat and said that it was enough and looked away from Luhan to hide his face as though if Luhan were to see his face at that moment, he could read Sehun’s mind and what he was thinking about. Luhan got up from kneeling and put the oil back in the first aid kit and went back to Sehun to help wrap a bandage around his torso to cover up the smell coming from the oil. Luhan opened a roll and wrapped his arms around Sehun, startling Sehun. Luhan started wrapping the bandage around Sehun’s torso, “hugging” Sehun multiple times in the process. Sehun didn’t want to seem strange so he stayed still and quiet, trying to breathe as lightly as possible. Luhan’s hair kept brushing Sehun’s cheek in the process, causing Sehun’s heart to beat faster and it took all of his willpower not to turn his head and bury his face in the softness of Luhan’s blonde hair.

“All done. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful,” Luhan said, with a genuine look of sadness on his face.

“Don’t worry about it. The pain’s a lot less now and you were plenty helpful,” Sehun said and gave Luhan a soft smile to show that he was grateful for his attention.

Luhan lightly smiled and rubbed the back of his neck. Sehun looked around for his school shirt and found it resting on a chair near the bed. He started to stand up and Luhan rushed over holding his arms.

“You sure you can stand up?” Luhan asked, in a panicked state.

Sehun stared at the hands that were holding him and shifted his eyes to look at the person who owned those hands. Blonde hair, large brown eyes with a look of genuine worry, Sehun could feel himself falling for Luhan and looking at his face so close made him lose all of the control he had before. Sehun pulled Luhan towards him and hugged him, finally able to feel the softness of Luhan’s blonde hair.

Warm skin. That was all Luhan thought when Sehun suddenly pulled him, putting him face to face against Sehun’s chest. His mind was having too many thoughts for him to process and he only hoped that Sehun couldn’t hear the rapid pace of his heart. After what seemed like forever, Luhan’s body was jolted back and saw Sehun smiling that soft smile that made Luhan blush before and felt Sehun put his hand on top of his head.

“Thanks for everything, but don’t think you’re off the hook just because you rubbed a little oil. Got it?” Sehun said and ruffled Luhan’s hair.

“Ah? Oh… yeah,” Luhan murmured, still thinking about what happened.

“Treat me to some food next time. I’ll see you around, Luhan,” Sehun said, before grabbing his shirt and walking slowly out of the clinic.

After Sehun left, Luhan finally came back to reality and looked around for Sehun thinking that he should help him at least walk out of school grounds but Sehun was nowhere to be seen. Luhan quickly cleaned up the bed Sehun was resting in, put all the bandages back into the first aid kit and started running out of the clinic. After running for a minute or so, he saw Sehun sitting on a bench in the school yard with his shirt still ed, staring blankly at the ground. Luhan sprinted over and stopped when he reached the bench.

“You should button your shirt. It’s getting cold,” Luhan said, making an attempt to act natural.

Sehun looked down to his shirt and said, “Oh yeah,” and laughed lightly at himself.

“I’ll do it for you,” Luhan said, and got in front of Sehun and bent down and started buttoning up his shirt.

“Uh… Luhan, it’s okay. I can –“ Sehun tried to say before he was cut off by the sudden closeness of Luhan’s face to his.

Luhan gulped and said, “If I kiss you, will you run away?”

Sehun’s eyes widened in surprise and his mind went numb for a while before shaking his head to Luhan’s question. Luhan beamed and started inching closer to Sehun’s face but stopped when he was only a few millimeters away from Sehun’s lips. Luhan backed away and looked at Sehun who was closing his eyes in anticipation. Sehun opened his eyes, and saw a grinning Luhan in front of him.

“Let’s hang out this weekend,” Luhan declared, leaving Sehun all confused, thinking that the almost-kiss was just his imagination.

“Um… Sure,” Sehun said, a little disappointed that it didn’t actually happen.

Luhan smiled and said that he’ll meet Sehun in front of  ‘Maldo’, a bubble tea shop near the school, at noon on Saturday and started walking away. Sehun felt a little down by the fact that his hug didn’t faze Luhan one bit and felt that it was only right to forget about his feelings since Luhan seemed uninterested.

“Hey!” Luhan yelled out, “ we can… continue what we were doing just then this weekend.”

Sehun’s eyes widened at Luhan’s words which made Luhan smile shyly. He turned quickly, sprinting towards the bus station that takes him back to his dorm. Sehun was still in disbelief over what just happened but also happy at the same time. He couldn’t help but smile and giggle to himself like a crazy person and started stomping on the ground as he couldn’t contain his happiness but stopped almost immediately from the slight pain he felt from the bruise. He took in a deep breath to control himself and let out a big satisfying sigh. He stood up and started walking in the direction of his house, grinning from ear to ear at the thought of the weekend to come.
