Chapter 1: Matchmaking Queen

Miss Matchmaker

It was a Sunday. A very busy Sunday. Song Eunmi woke up to the sound of her loud ringtone, groaning in response as her hand swept over the side table to grab the loud gadget. Begrudgingly lifting herself up from the bed, she answered the phone and looked at her window. She groaned again. It was only one in the morning! Who would dare call her at this godly hour?

“Hello?” she answered, still sleepy.

“Eunmi-yah! I’m sorry for calling you this early, but I need your help! Do you remember our group date the other day?” Upon hearing the magic word, Eunmi immediately perked up, all traces of drowsiness leaving her.

“Yes, I remember. What’s wrong? Did something happen?” Eunmi asked eagerly.

“It’s that…” the other line continued shyly, “we have a date again today…”

“Jinjja?! Omo, the matchmaking worked!!” By now, Eunmi was up and about, jumping excitedly at the news. Yet another matchmaking success! “I’m so happy for you, Youngri-ah!”

“Yeah, about that… I want to bake him some cake today, but I don’t know how… Since you bake sometimes, I thought… well… I thought…” Youngri trailed off.

“Alright, I’ll go there right away! Give me twenty minutes to prepare!”

“Jinjja? But is it really okay? I mean, it’s so early… and you might have a meeting later…”

“Ah, don’t worry about that! I’ll manage, besides, what are best friends for?”

-

“Hyung, look! You’re in the news again! And this is the fourth time this week too!” Park Yoochun said, looking at the nonchalant man sitting beside him on the couch. Kim Jaejoong just nodded, not tearing his eyes off the book he was reading. On the screen of the television, photos of Jaejoong with his fans flashed, showing previews of the fanmeeting he held yesterday.

“Whoa, isn’t that Jaejoongie-hyung?” Kim Junsu exclaimed after stepping out of the bathroom with a towel on his shoulders. “Wow! I know you said you were going to do fan-service, but I didn’t think you’ll actually cook and feed them! This is why you’re dubbed as a Prince, hyung. You’re too sweet!”

“If you ask me, I’ll say he’s like that because he’s in love…” Yoochun said with a teasing smile. “So, who is she?”

Jaejoong gave him a brief sideway glance, before returning his attention back to the book. “It’s actually the other way around. I do that because I’m not in love.” He paused, “otherwise, I’ll just focus my attention on one girl, don’t you think?” He shut the book, stood up, and passed a teasing look at Yoochun and Junsu. “But you know that won’t happen. Not in a million years.” He winked, and headed to his bedroom.

Junsu pouted. “You don’t know that, hyung. Someday, you’re bound to fall in love. Every one of us will marry and settle down. You’re no exception. Don’t you want to have someone special in your life?”

Jaejoong stopped by the door, looking at Junsu over his shoulder, clearly amused. “I do have special people in my life. I have you guys.”

“But it’s not the same –“ Junsu was interrupted by Jaejoong’s soft chuckle.

“Junsu-yah, not all of us view love like you do. I just don’t find anything special in loving one girl.”

“That, or you’re just scared to fall,” Changmin commented snidely, weaving casually from his room and shuffling into the kitchen. He passed by Yunho who was leaning against the wall, quietly listening to the conversation s were having.

“I think Changmin’s right, Jae. You don’t want to love because you’re avoiding a possible heartbreak.”

Jaejoong shrugged at Yunho, then called out to Changmin who was probably grabbing a bite. “You’re not any better, Min. Last time I checked, you’re still single.”

The maknae poked his head around the kitchen’s door, bread stuffed in his mouth. He pulled it out briefly, and smirked. “What can I say, hyung? There are plenty to choose from. I gotta screen them out one by one. Only the best for Shim Changmin.” He winked, and disappeared back into the kitchen.

Jaejoong shook his head, sighing. “Convince me all you want, but it’s not going to work. I have my fans; they’re more than enough. Anyway, it’s late, I’ll go to bed now. See you guys in the morning!”

“Oh, that’s right! You have a meeting for your new drama, right?” Junsu asked. “Goodnight, hyung.”

“Yeah…Jalja.”

Eunmi smiled proudly to herself as she watched Youngri and her new boyfriend through the restaurant’s glass window. Her bestfriend had just given her present to Jeongmin which the latter accepted with a loving smile. Seeing them so happy together, she couldn’t help but swell with pride and joy. Spreading love had been her forte for quite some time now; she just loved the rewarding feeling she receives every time her matchmaking worked. Today, one of her favourite match worked; she couldn’t be any happier!

Giving one last look at Youngri and Jeongmin, Eunmi padded down the streets with a wide smile. It was funny, really, how her friend was so cute and innocent about her first relationship. Youngri called her so early in the morning just because she was so overly worried about the date. The baking took hours, and they ended up making more than Youngri intended, but it was good. After all, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, right?

Eunmi checked her watch. It was already six AM. She still got two more hours before her meeting with the scriptwriters. What would she do until then? Well, she could go home and catch up with her sleep, but she might oversleep and miss the meeting. After some thinking, she dismissed the idea and decided she would just drop by at her favourite café shop. She wasn’t sleepy anymore anyway. She could still last a few more hours.

Smiling, she turned to another street and headed toward her all-time favourite shop. Her day started great today. She wondered if anything could go wrong.

-

Eunmi sipped her coffee, her eyes trained on the television. Around her, the girls in the café seemed to be doing the same thing, if not swooning and ogling. She could hear their dreamy sighs from where she sat, shaking her head every now and then when some girl would squeal and scream. It’s not like she wasn’t used to it though. Since she works in the entertainment industry, she’s gotten the hang of it already. Being a scriptwriter, she’s often present in the shootings and tapings, so it was safe to say she’s got her fair share of experiences with the idols’ fans.

This time, it’s with Kim Jaejoong’s fans.

“Omo, oppa is really handsome!!”

“I’m so jealouuuuus~ I wanna taste oppa’s Kimbap too~!”

“Aish, shut up! Jaejoongie oppa is mine!”

“Mwo? Mworago?”

The rest buzzed off as Eunmi slowly left the café after leaving her bill. It won’t be too nice if she got caught in that catfight. The last time… well, it wasn’t a pleasant experience. Let’s just say she endured some deep scratches for a week just because she accidentally bumped into an actor. Remembering it now, she couldn’t help but shudder at some of the fans’ possessive behaviour. What were they called again? Sasaeng?

“Why, isn’t this our Eunmi?”

Eunmi stopped walking, turning around to see two boys waving at her as they approached. Both had wide grins on their faces. Eunmi recognized one of them as Jeongmin’s close friend. His name is Sihoo.  They met when one of her classmates introduced him, asking if she could find him a good girl. Through Sihoo, Eunmi met Jeongmin whom she introduced to her bestfriend. Eunmi smiled proudly. Why, her memory is superb!

“You must be Seoul’s matchmaking queen! I’ve heard a lot about you from Jeongmin and Sihoo,” the other guy said. “I’m Ryuhyun.” He reached out his hand.

Eunmi reached and shook their hands. “It’s Eunmi, Song Eunmi.”

“I really have to thank you, Eunmi-yah. Inhye and I have been dating for a while now. She’s really the best match for me!”

“I’m so happy to hear that. It’s always a pleasure to help, y’know?” She winked.

Ryuhyun laughed nervously. Eunmi looked at him questioningly.

“Oh, don’t mind this weirdo,” Sihoo said, looping his arm around Ryuhyun’s neck. “He’s just a crazy shy bastard. Come to think of it, can you help this idiot out? He’s in bad need for a girl.”

“Si –“

“Of course! Just tell me your preference and I’ll see what I can do for you!”

“No, no, wait, what–? Really?” Ryuhyun asked in surprise. Sihoo laughed.

“Yeah, what kind of girl do you like?”

“Well, she has to be caring, nurturing, and understanding. Oh, if she’s pretty, then it’ll be perfect. I really like girls who can sing though.”

Eunmi laughed, jotting it all down. Of course. All the guys want the same thing: the perfect girlfriend. Just his luck though. She knew someone who fit perfectly in his standard and criteria. “Give me your number. I’ll arrange a date for you. Gonna call you after I’ve set the date, okay? Is Saturday fine?”

“Yes, yes, Saturday is perfect! Thank you so much! Wow, they really aren’t kidding when they called you the Queen of Matchmaking.”

“Told you, dude. She’s the best!” Sihoo said.

Eunmi waved their praises with a timid laugh. “Helping out is my forte. Don’t mention it.” She felt a vibration in her pocket. Fishing out her cellphone, she immediately saw the text from her co-script writer. “Oh, I gotta run. I still have things to do. Catch you later.”

This would be her first time meeting the star of her new drama: Love is… She didn’t know why, but somehow she felt very excited about it. Perhaps because Love is… is so far her most favourite of the all the scripts she wrote or perhaps because today was just a good, refreshing day. Nonetheless, she couldn’t shake off the fluttering sensation in her stomach.

Fleetingly, she wondered who would be the lead actor… Was it perhaps Kim bum? Or maybe, it's gonna be Jang Geun Suk? Eunmi giggled. Whoever it may be, somehow, she had a good feeling about this.

“Love is in the air!” she bubbly said to herself. “I bet everyone wants to fall in love right now! Eunmi, Fighting!”
