The Great Outdoors

The Angel Slept

It had been five days since arriving at the house, and Sungjong felt content here. Myungsoo had joined Sungjong everyday at dinner, bringing his food up to him and sharing information with him and jokes, making the two of them laugh together. Sungjong had learned that Myungsoo was older, that he attended a university but was on break at the moment. Myungsoo had also told Sungjong a lot about his memories of a kid and living in this house, he had told him the reason he and his mother wanted to keep it so badly was because it belonged to his father who had passed away two years ago. Knowing better than to sympathize with his older and pat his back, apologising, he smiled at Myungsoo and said, ‘I bet he’s happy, looking down on you, he must feel proud.’ Myungsoo’s eyes had widened and he smiled back at Sungjong, they stayed silent for the rest of the meal, but it wasn’t awkward, it was a nice silence, calm and blissful.

Today was a bit different though, Myungsoo came two hours earlier to see Sungjong sat with his legs crossed on an old looking rocking chair reading a book, he looked up at Myungsoo with big, questioning eyes.

The older held up a big woolly jumper, “You should get some air, you’ve been locked in this room for so long, lets go out.”

“Out…side?” Sungjong stood and looked out of his window, the fields sure did look beautiful and the sun was bright today, the sky was all blue, but from looking at the tall bright green trees, you could see the chill of the wind that made them sway.

Myungsoo rolled his eyes jokingly, “Where else silly?” He took his hand and pulled him from the room, shutting the door behind them, “Lets go, okay?”

Sungjong’s eyes shone, he hadn’t been allowed outside for so long, he was excited, ecstatic even and he nodded his head with such enthusiasm that Myungsoo couldn’t help but laugh at him.

“But, you have to wear this jumper, okay? Your mum requested it.”

“Okay!”

“Are you alright?” Myungsoo slowed down and came to Sungjong’s side, who was panting heavily with red tinted cheeks.

Keeping his same smile, he looked at Myungsoo and nodded his head, not saying a word, as it would take more of his breath away. The older boy sighed and stopped Sungjong from walking.

“Come on, I’ll carry you, climb on my back.” He sat in a squat and waited to feel Sungjong climb on his back so he could carry on walking towards their destination, but that never happened, Sungjong only chuckled and walked past Myungsoo with a simple, “I’ll walk.” And did just that.

But Myungsoo couldn’t help but worry, he looked back at Sungjong when he was slightly ahead to see the boy had stopped and was leaning his hands on his knees with his head down. The walk was hard on him and it must’ve been painful, with that in mind, Myungsoo wasn’t taking a ‘no’ as an answer this time.

“Get on my back.”

Shocked at his sudden serious tone, Sungjong stood still, Myungsoo looked back and clapped his hands, placing them behind him, saying he was ready, “B-but I want to…walk.” Sungjong puffed out, his face redder than before.

“Well, we’ll see, for now, just accept the ride.”

And so, Sungjong did accept the ride, placing his arms around Myungsoo’s neck and leaning his head on his back, as Myungsoo’s arms carefully clasped around Sungjong’s thin legs.

“Comfortable?” Sungjong asked him, unsure.

“You’re lighter than I expected…”

Sungjong snorted, “What…do I look heavy or something?”

The older boy grinned and shook his head, “No, its just skinny people are normally a lot heavier than they look.”

Another small laugh from Sungjong gave Myungsoo his own smile, “I don’t know whether to take that as a compliment or not.” Sungjong said in a whisper, and closed his eyes, only now realising just how exhausted he really was.

“We’re almost there, just up this hill.”

Opening his closed eyes, he looked at the hill, it was big and Sungjong felt worried that he would be too much for Myungsoo, “Can you carry me all the way up there?”

“I’m stronger than I look, you know.”

Still, Sungjong was concerned and kept still and quiet as Myungsoo made his way up the hill, until he saw a large oak tree. His eyes squinted, tied onto the tree were two long ropes and at the bottom was a plank of wood, Sungjong’s face lit up, he recognised what it was, “A swing!”

With a gentle laugh, he recalled one of his earliest memories from his childhood, and without realising, he had begun to speak, “My dad would take me to the park on my days out, he’d pick me up and place me on the swing, saying, ‘You don’t need to go on anything else, Jongie, this is the best thing on the park’, he said it for my health, but it always made me feel special, then he’d push me until I was laughing too much as he shouted out, ‘Do you feel like you’re flying yet?’ I’d nod my head and too soon, it would be over and I would whine wanting to play more on the swing.” Myungsoo placed Sungjong down on the ground and turned to see a heart-rending smile play against his lips, “Not long after, they stopped my day trips out of the hospital, claiming it was making me worse.”

Although Myungsoo had told Sungjong a lot about his past, Sungjong hadn’t yet told Myungsoo anything about his past yet, and when the older boy asked, the younger would answer saying that there wasn’t much to his childhood, so right now, Myungsoo treasured this moment. He placed a hand on Sungjong’s shoulder, “Being outdoors makes everyone feel better, now you have all the time in the world to make up for the time you’ve lost outdoors.”

And I’ll be right here to spend it with you, Myungsoo thought.

He moved his hand from Sungjong’s shoulder down to his hand, he intertwined them and slowly walked to the swing, offering Sungjong to sit down on it first, the younger grinned and sat down on the wooden plank.

“Hold on tight!” Myungsoo pulled backwards as he saw Sungjong gripping onto the ropes tightly, he let go and began to push the pretty boy, who had begun to laugh, Myungsoo kept pushing, higher and higher and then thought...he shouted out, “Do you feel like you’re flying yet?”

Sungjong nodded his head and looked back at Myungsoo, the sight was beautiful, Sungjong’s hair flew backwards, his eyes sparkled and he showed a graceful smile, his pale skin shone as sun rays were lit up behind him, and he really did look like he was flying. The older boys breath hitched slightly, his heart jolted, and he blinked, freeing himself from the stare he was giving Sungjong. Quickly making his way back to reality, he gave the younger another push.

How can a human look so angelic…the thought pondered on his mind as he carried on pushing Sungjong on the swing.
