River of Stars

A Perfect Mélodie

You simply sat there, staring into Niel’s eyes. You had been for the past few moments. He continued to come closer to you, not moving his eyes away from yours, but instead keeping his gorgeous large brown eyes fixed on your own. Now, he was only inches away from your face, so close to you that you could feel his gentle hot breath tickling your lips.

Already, you were blushing like mad and couldn’t manage to tear your gaze away from Niel’s captivating eyes.

“Woah...” You began, edging away a little before you cleared your throat. “I.. Is there something wrong?” You asked, feeling a little nervous about why Niel was suddenly so close to you. “Please don’t do that… it’s… it’s uncomfortable.” You managed to stammer out the confession.

Niel frowned at your response.

“So... Do you feel uncomfortable when I’m like this with you?”

What?! Was he crazy?!

Of course you didn’t feel uncomfortable with him being like that with you, but after what had just happened only moments ago, you couldn’t help but feel a little flustered.

“Umm… It’s just because it’s hot here by the fire… A-And it’s a little bit awkward.” You looked down at your feet, feeling your face beginning to heat up again.

Niel looked down and shuffled across so that he was no longer sitting so close to you. You didn’t want him to move away from you! If anything you wanted him to move closer. When he was so close to you, even if it was a little awkward, you didn’t mind. You felt happy. You felt butterflies in your stomach.

All you could do was look back up at the fire in front of you.

You turned slightly to look at Niel, and check that he was ok with you, and that you hadn’t scared him off by saying he made you feel uncomfortable. His moth was in a straight line and you couldn’t help but notice that he looked quite unhappy.

Not knowing what to do, you simply turned away, you couldn’t do anything without making things worse recently, so you sat alone for the rest of the time everyone was sat round the camp fire, not talking to anyone, and mentally face-palming yourself. You could be so useless at times, and you thought that you might have a gift to destroy everything that your friends could do for you. Firstly, Jae Hwa and L.Joe wanted you to be with Niel. And after speaking no more than three sentences with him, he thought that you didn’t like him and was uncomfortable when you were around him. You really did have the ability to destroy everything.

As you were sat there thinking about this, you noticed everyone getting up together, Niel walked into the country house, and you sat and watched him enter, before getting up also, and following everyone else inside.

“Have we finished at the camp fire?” You asked L.Joe who was now stood beside you.

“Oh-” He began to reply, but was cut off by Jae-Hwa.

“Mélodie!” She cooed, smirking as she looked you up and down. “Why don’t you go inside and see your boyfriend?” She asked, putting emphasis on the last word.

“He’s not my boyfriend; we barely even spoke to each other.” You hissed, beginning to feel a blush creeping onto your cheeks once again.

“Hmm... I think you’re right there.” Jae-Hwa nodded, placing a finger on her chin as she pretended to think. “You two were probably too absorbed in staring into each other’s eyes to be able to talk to one another.” She joked.

“You’re not wrong.” You mumbled, not sure if either of them had noticed you staring at one another, or if Jae-Hwa genuinely as just joking.

L.Joe and Jae-Hwa turned to each other, the surprise on their faces showing.

“You looked into each other’s eyes?” L.Joe asked, his voice even showing his surprise. “In that way?”

“Look.” You paused, not wanting to go into any more detail about everything that had just happened between you and Niel. “I’m sorry.”After you noticed the confused look on both of their faces, you felt as though you should tell them a little of what happened. “I’m sorry; I just messed up everything you two have done for me so far. When Niel was so close to me, I kind of told him I found it uncomfortable having him beside me and that he didn’t seem too happy about it.”

Jae-Hwa punched you gently on the arm.

“Why are you so stupid sometimes?” She asked, not meaning it seriously, but you knew that there was some truth behind what she way saying. You could be really stupid at times.

“It’s ok.” L.Joe reassured you. “I’ll talk to Niel about it, see if I can help you out a little, I know you’re shy.”

“Thank you.” You gave him a weak smile, before leaving with the rest to go to your room to sleep.

As you lay in bed trying to sleep, you couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened between you and Niel. Not being able to sleep, you got up, being careful not to wake up any of the other members which were now sleeping, and put your hoodie on, knowing that as it was later, it may have got a little chilly, despite how warm it was at the country house even in the late afternoon by the camp fire.

You took your ipod from on top of your dresser and made your way outside.

After walking around in the spacious garden of the country house, you eventually found a hammock, which was tied between two very beautiful trees, at the end of the garden, close to the pond where the fish were swimming in the glow of the sparkly pond lights, making the most beautiful scene to sit in.

You sat down on the hammock and looked around, watching the fish swim for a small while. It was the perfect place to relax.

Growing a little tired, you lay down in the hammock and looked up at the sky. The view of the hundreds of starts sprinkled across the deep blue sky like glitter made you smile, and reminded you of how beautiful the sky looked in the country side at night time. As you looked up at stars, which seemed to twinkle and shine bright like little diamonds, you put your earphones in and found the song which was perfect to listen to in a gorgeous atmosphere. River of Stars. This was your favorite song when you were younger and lived back in Canada. You used to listen to it often, and would sit on your windowsill at night, your legs hanging out of the open window as you gazed up at the river of stars flowing above you.

After a while of listening to the song on replay, you began to feel your eyes growing heavy as you drifted off to sleep, but the sudden disappearance of the moons light caused you to open your eyes to see what had happened.

You were expecting it to just be a cloud, but when you opened your eyes and saw Niel standing over you, you jumped and managed to fall off of the edge of the hammock.

“Oh!” Niel gasped gently, catching you as you fell and you looked up at Niel, only to find yourself sat in his arms.

Niel gently put you on your feet again, and you cleared your throat, trying to make the atmosphere less awkward between the two of you.

“What are you doing out here?” Niel asked. “You shouldn’t really be outside in a hammock at 2am.” His voice was gentle, and he sounded almost concerned for you.

“I was trying to sleep.” You nodded, looking across at the pond where the fish were still swimming. It wasn’t a lie; after all, you had been drifting off until Niel came and scared you half to death. “You should go back inside.” You said awkwardly, not knowing if Niel would take any advice you gave him. “You should sleep; tomorrow will be a big day you know.” With that you sat back down in the hammock, lay on your back, put your earphones in and closed your eyes, acting as though Niel wasn’t there in the hopes of him leaving you alone and avoiding making you even more embarrassed than you had been earlier by the fire.

You were so nervous and shy now that Niel was there, that your face was as red as a tomato, and you felt a little relief that it was dark in the garden, so Niel couldn’t see your face properly.

You felt the hammock dip a little at the side, and you opened one eye wearily to see that Niel was now perched on the hammock beside you. Opening your eyes, you looked to the other side. If Niel were to look at you now, there would be no mistaking the dark shade of red you had turned.

“Is it ok for me to lie here next to you?” Niel asked, “Or are you still ‘uncomfortable’?”

“You can get in if you want.” You said shyly with a sigh.

Niel did as you said and laid down beside you. At first it felt awkward, and neither of you spoke, but eventually the silence got too much for you, and you ended up having to break it.

You pulled out your earphones and looked over at Niel. He was laid on the hammock, one arm resting under his head and the other resting across his stomach as he looked up at the stars.

You didn’t get chance to break the silence before Niel looked at you.

“Do you want to say something?” Although it could be perceived as a nasty question meant to irritate you, you didn’t see it that way. The way Niel said it was gentle, and you knew that he wasn’t trying to be rude.

You looked at him, and up at the sky again.

“I’m sorry for what I said.” You coughed a little and avoided making eye contact with Niel, knowing that it would just be awkward. “I didn’t really think about what I was saying, I can be such a stupid girl, and I can’t say anything that’s not stupid most of the time. I just mess everything up.” You looked over at Niel, expecting him to at least agree with you a little bit, but his face was serious.

“That’s not true.” He began. “You’re not stupid at all, and I know that you didn’t mean what you said.”

“Why... Why did you... Why did you look so... weary before?” You stuttered, being careful with your choice of words so that you didn’t mess up again.

“I was a little.” He confessed. “But now I know you didn’t mean what you said. I know because now I’m lying beside you in a hammock at 2am.” He let out a soft chuckle, and you laughed a little at his comment too.

“You’re right.”

“I know.” He smiled you, before you both looked back up at the sky together, feeling a little less awkward with each other now.

After a while, an idea popped into your mind, and for once, maybe it wouldn’t be too bad to actually try it, instead of not doing things and regretting it. You took your earphones and put one in your ear, and then you put the other in Niel’s ear. He turned to look at you, seeming a little flustered.

“It’s the best song to enjoy a beautiful night sky like this.” You smiled, looking down at your ipod. Niel smiled too and you looked back up at the sky once again.

You felt something moving beside your arm, and you looked across to see Niel’s arm brushing against your own, noticing that he wanted to share a little  skin ship with you. You laughed at how he was being both so cute and awkward, not wanting to go any further as he knew you didn’t like skin ship, but feeling your confidence rising, you grabbed Niel’s hand, intertwining his fingers with your own, before smiling at him and looking back up at the sky.

Niel looked back at you, surprised that you had the confidence to actually do that for once, but when he saw you smiling, he also broke out into a large smile, and tightened his hand around yours.

It wasn’t long before you drifted off to sleep, your fingers intertwined with Niel’s, the steady rising and falling of his chest as he breathed, your head tucked under his chin, smiling as you looked up at the starry night sky.
