adj.
passing out of sight; fading away; vanishing: evanescent beauty
There are people we do not want to forget, even though they’re part of a great ambiguous loss. We look at them as they walk by, their eyes scanning the environment and skipping you. It hurts and drains your soul.
Maybe you do not want to admit, but as they leave your view, you wish you had some device to change the past. You want to get rid of the darkness that is hanging between the two of you. You want to know what it feels like to walk next to each other in the light again.
But there won’t be any light for broken things cannot be repaired.
Kris had someone he did not want to forget either, but as time went by, the memory drained more than his own soul. His personality was slowly fading away as if life was lobotomizing him. Scary, isn’t it? Think about it, please.
“You never should have come here.” Tao’s skin shined in the moonlight. His big eyes were looking around, trying to avoid my gaze. He couldn’t because with every second passing by, I approached him even more.
I thought about everything that happened since I set one foot in this house. The doctor’s riddle and suicide, Zico, the two lovers and the disappearance of Zelo. I knew what I was going to do, but I informed myself that taking the night off would be a good plan. I needed to investigate this matter by the book.
“Do you know what happened to Zelo?” I asked him and grabbed his arm. “Because if you do, you must tell me. I don’t think that Zico…”
“Please,” Tao whispered and grabbed my arm with his icy cold hands. “do not talk about him. He has ears everywhere.” He opened the door and looked outside, checking whether Zico was around.
His eyes were overflowing with fright. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, because somehow I felt as vulnerable as the other dolls did. To me it was the strangest feeling to overwhelm me like that.
“What happened to Zelo? Where is he?” I asked him again. I did not like secrets or riddles. People were in danger here. It’s like Yong Guk said to Zelo the night before Zelo disappeared. He’ll be the death of you.
Tao opened his mouth, a little sound escaped, like a silent scream, ready to transform into spoken words. But the universe or someone else did not want it to happen and a sudden knock on the door broke the silence as a hammer demolishing a window.
It was Zico. His pink, dirty dreads caught my attention, like his silver teeth did. “Your time’s up. Go home.” He stepped inside and looked around, as if he was expecting something to happen.
I nodded, afraid to say or do something wrong, turned around and walked past him. His stare was drilling into my being, but I kept on walking until the door closed behind me. Zico was in the room with Tao now. I heard someone scream but couldn’t find the nerve to interfere.
