Some day in the 1800’s --

Dust stilled around the small boom town. Horses snorted and successively shook up the dust again. Kyungsoo dodged the towering stallions and weaved his way through a group of rough pan handlers. He nearly let the pile of rifles clatter to the ground as a pair of leggy girls grabbed his shoulder, asking if the little Asian boy would have fun with some mommies? Kyungsoo blushed as he ran past the two and rushed into the unusually quiet saloon, cursing his wretched existence.

Two years before, a strain of silver was found within the deceptively cheerful and bubbling creek. The blinding sparkles in the creek did prefigure the strain but no one would have really inferred that the stream would yield so much money and prosperity.

As soon as the news was spread by an augur, the founder, it seemed as if overnight, a bustling frontier town was built. Saloon doors never stood still, gun shots always rang out, and jovial laughing could always be heard. One could hear bangs and curses as phantasmagoric wooden fronts were built to cover the wretched and real buildings on the inside. Indubitably, the biggest edifice was the jail. No wooden fronts were built to hide the ugly physiognomy. Pillories stood next to the building, looking like roses in front of a grand mansion. It was truly a place where only malefactors go to suffer when they transgress the law of the little town.

One year before, Kyungsoo had arrived to this town with his master. He was a Korean slave, plucked from Korea by Chinese slave traders and then from the opium dens of China to be shipped off to England where he met his current owner. The discerning boy grasped English quite quickly, just as he learned Mandarin. His congenial and amenable disposition was also a trait his master appreciated. Now the boy, almost young man, was in America, learning to survive in unpredictable conditions.
