The feeling of being in love

The thin line between the past and future

Henry tapped his desk with his pen as he stared blankly at the paper. He silently yawned and crossed out the words written.

“I really don’t trust that guy.” Henry muttered in displeasure. Luhan, who was quietly browsing on the internet, glanced at Henry. Having heard a snippet of what he said, Luhan slowly lifted his laptop off his lap and placed it beside him on the bed.  He slowly approached Henry and abruptly squeezed his shoulders.

Henry was lost in his own thoughts, not noticing Luhan’s presence, shuddered in response to the cold hands that touched him.

“Don’t trust who?” Luhan smiled brightly at his roommate, only to see a dejected face from Henry.

“Nobody...” Henry grumbled and reluctantly took the paper from his desk, and scrunched it up. Luhan pouted, as it was quite obvious his roommate was having some sort of problem.

“C’mon! You can tell me anything, I’m your roommate.” Henry bit the bottom of his lips and crossed his arms, deciding whether he should confide Luhan with his personal issues.

“I don’t trust my English teacher.” Luhan tilted and scratched his head. It was Luhan first time hearing someone say they don’t trust their teacher. No. It was his first time hearing someone who has trust issues with his teacher.

“Why not?” Luhan curiously asked, he couldn’t help but feel slightly amused with Henry’s so called problem.

“You...see...talking...t-to...uh...yeah...uh...s-suspicious...”Henry tried to explain, stuttering and making weird hand gestures that didn’t fit with the context at all.  He looked at the confused Luhan and shook his head.

“You know what? Forget it.” Henry threw the scrunched paper into the trash can, missing it by an inch. He then opened his drawer compartment from under his desk and took out a stash of paper.

“Who’s suspicious? Talking to what? No no no, tell more.” Luhan insisted, wanting to hear what Henry had to say, he was definitely intrigued by this conversation.

Henry fiddled with his pen before looking directly at Luhan. He took a deep breath and started to speak.

“You see, my friend is hanging out a bit too much with Mr. Lau, my English teacher, and I’m a bit suspicious. He talked to her the very first day he came and they’ve been talking ever since. I’m fine with that and all, maybe he’s new to the system. But, today her practice was cancelled and she didn’t come watch me, which, she usually does when her practices are cancel. I find out a bit later she was talking to the teacher. I wasn’t fazed until she also rejected my offer to eat with her to talk to him afterschool. I mean—I’m worried if he’s black mailing her or –”

“Or she likes him?” Luhan suggested as he already had an idea of the ‘friend’ he was referring too.

“That too...” Henry meekly murmured under his breath, a bit miffed by Luhan’s comment.

“B-but he’s already married and he has a child. So I’m worried.” Luhan couldn’t help but grin at Henry, he was totally lovesick and he was oblivious to it.

“Worried about what? It’s Amber-ssi we’re talking about right? From what I’ve seen, I’m pretty sure she’s not that type of girl who would have an affair...”

“No, I’m not worried about that at all, Amber isn’t like that. Just Mr. Lau seems...just...a bit suspicious.”

“Why is he suspicious?” Henry tried to find a way to explain it to Luhan, but he couldn’t, it was just pure instinct. Henry could only think of one way to show Luhan his suspicions. He took his bag that was under his desk and took out a piece of paper. It was the about me worksheet that was given to Henry in English class.

Henry handed the sheet of paper to Luhan. “Read it.”

Luhan quickly skimmed the sheet of paper and looked at Henry, “What does this have to do anything with my question?”

“Mr. Lau wrote these questions on the sheet you just skimmed. Read his questions.” Luhan read the first few questions that were on the sheet, they seemed very normal and generic to him. They were mostly English related questions and he didn’t understand what Henry was trying to show to him.

“They seem like normal questions to me.”

“Read the bottom questions, Luhan.” The questions were really strange, much to Luhan’s surprise. The questions consisted of: If you had a rainbow pony, what would you do? What’s your most embarrassing moment in life? Between the two, would you choose chicken nuggets or fries? Would you change your past, if you got the chance to change it? Who are you?

Luhan returned the paper to Henry and nodded, “I see your point, but maybe he’s trying to be creative?”

“It’s a bit too eccentric for my taste then.” Henry commented as he shoved the paper back into his bag.

“I’m sure Mr. Lau means no harm, plus you have a better chance with Amber-ssi.”

Henry scoffed and cleared his throat, “Luhan, I don’t see Amber in that light, and wait, how did you know I was talking about Amber?”

Luhan rolled his eyes and shook his head. He slightly wondered how Henry could be so dense or so stupid to not realize his own feelings. “One, you do. Two, you’re too obvious.”

“How do you know when you like someone anyways? If anything, I think I love her as a friend and brother.”

Luhan sat down on Henry’s bed, how could he make Henry realize his feeling so for Amber? He pondered for a few minutes until an idea hit him. He would use the same technique he used when he realized he liked Sehun.

“Ah, I think I could show you, put your hand to your heart and close your eyes.” Henry strangely looked at Luhan, but did as he was told.

“Now I’m going to say a few things and think of someone who would meet those condition. Understand?” Henry nodded and motioned Luhan to continue.

“The person who you think of last when you go to sleep, the person who always makes you smile despite their flaws, the person you can confront anything to, the one you always miss when they’re not there, the person you can be yourself with and finally, the one who makes your heart beat warmly.”

There was a brief pause and Henry gradually opened his eyes, hands still placed on his chest. Luhan was anxious to hear Henry’s answer.

“So, who was the person you thought of?” Henry looked at Luhan dead in the eye and took a deep breath.

“My...” Henry starts, making Luhan anticipate his answer.

“Mom.”

Amber sat in her seat and glanced at Sehun and mini Luhan. Her eyes slowly wandered to Mr. Lau, who was writing on the board. In big letters he wrote past on the left side and future on the right. He then drew a line in the middle of the board and drew a big dot on the centre of the line.

“Okay, before you ask what this is about let me explain. The higher ups, or as I like to refer to them as those scary guys, allowed me to tell you how I was able to get here from the future.”

“Wait, are there people who are from the future also here?” Sehun asked curiously.

“Not quite. Don’t asked why either, that’s confidential and their private business. Anyways, as most of you guys know, I come from the future. There’s no really explicit way I can explain to you how I managed to go from the future to past, as there were many researchers and scientist involved in the making of this.” Mr. Lau pulled out a small round chip from his pocket.

Amber stared at the chip for quite a while. It kinda threw her off because she imagined a time machine chair that blasted Henry from the future to the past, like in those futuristic movies. This chip, however, didn’t quite live to her expectation. “How does that chip even get you from the past to the future or vice versa?”

“Simple, I press the button in the middle and I’ll be back to my original time.”

“Can’t we use your chip to send Luhan back to the past?”

“See, that’s the problem Sehun. Each individual time traveller is given their own chips. My chips specifically take me back to my time and era, and Luhan should have his. But, seeing as he’s only a child, someone is keeping it safe with them and will probably return it to Luhan once he finishes what he has to finish.”

“Wait, so you mean, there are people watching us right now?”

“You can say that I guess. We’re moderated at the school most of time, but they don’t usually stalk you outside of school. So you don’t have to worry too much Amber.” Mr. Lau stuffed the chip back inside his pocket. He started to write his name under the word future and made an arrow to point it to the big dot in the center. He did the same for Luhan except on the left side.

“You see this big dot, it the present time, and it gives you a clearer insight of what is exactly happening. The present can last only a short amount of time.  It takes probably only a millisecond, no probably even faster, to change from present to past. Even me talking, the words I’m saying now will become the past in just a few seconds. What im saying is, time travelling is quick, so it’s not like those future movies where they go through a tunnel of time or who knows what. Well, that’s my explanation, now on to the more important stuff. ” Mr. Lau pointed his fingers to mini Luhan.

“So Sehun, what do you want us to do with Luhan? I said I’ll help you when you need it and Amber didn’t say anything but since she’s here, I’m pretty sure she’ll help.” Sehun glanced at Amber and shifted his gaze to Mr. Lau.

“Okay, I live alone so it’s not big of a deal to keep him home. It’s just when I go to school, he’ll try to come with me. It’s a bit problematic. I also have a job during Tuesday and Thursday. So it would be great if you can take care of him. Also, I don’t really cook.”

Mr. Lau nodded. “Oh cooking is my speciality I can make some healthy lunches, for you and Luhan.”

“Just Luhan, I can survive on my own.”

“I didn’t even know you could cook Henry.” Amber was surprised, she never saw Henry cook. He would usually eat out with her or eat ramen. There was no indication that he could cook.

“Oh, well during the school year, I didn’t know how to cook, but I gradually learned. Though, it was a pain in the back.”

Mr. Lau looked at the clock, it was already 5 pm. “You guys should go now, it’s pretty late. I said all that needs to be said. Also, Sehun I think you have to find out Luhan’s promise on your own. You have to rely on memories and pictures to do you any good.” Sehun slowly nodded and the sudden thought hit him. He could ask Luhan to bring him some photos from the past!  Sehun lifted Luhan up and placed him on the floor.

“I’m going out for a bit, can you stay with ahjussi for a while?” Luhan nodded and walked towards Mr. Lau and grabbed his pants. Sehun smiled and dashed towards the door and left.

Amber looked at Mr. Lau, who was smirking.

“You emphasized pictures on purpose didn’t you?”

Mr. Lau shrugged, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Sehun took out his phone and dialed Luhan’s number. “Hello? Sehun?”

“Yeah! What are you doing right now?”

“I was hitting Henry hyung with all the pillows in this dorm, why?”

“Do you have any pictures of us in the past in your dorms?”

“Yeah I do, they're lying somewhere in my closet.”

“Can you come out and give them to me? I’m near the basketball court in the school yard, meet you there now?”

“Yeah, okay, I’ll go! See you there.” Luhan hung up on Sehun and glared at Henry, who was still giggling.

“Oh Luhan, you didn’t say anything specific, you said a person. I thought of my mom. You can’t say much about it!” Luhan pouted and walk towards his closet. He opened the closet and rummaged through his stuff until he found a photo album.

“Are you going to Sehun now?” Luhan turned to Henry and nodded. He took his jacket and started to walk out the door.

“See you later, Luhan.”

“Bye, Hyung! I expect a better answer when I come back!”

A small smile crept onto Henry’s face, “Someone...that makes my heartbeat...huh...”

Luhan ran towards Sehun waving his hand and yelled his name, “Sehun!!”

Sehun turned to Luhan and waved back. As Luhan approached Sehun, he held the photo album tightly.

“Here’s the photo album you requested.” Luhan handed the album to Sehun and noticed Sehun’s lips broadly widen.

“Why did you need it anyways?”

“Ah nothing, I just wanted to see if I could remember the past.” Luhan face darkened at the mention of it. He looked to the ground and began to fidget with his fingers.

“Sometimes memories are better forgotten.”  Luhan mumbled to himself.

“Huh? What did you say?”

“I said you shouldn’t pry too much in the past. They were better forgotten.” Sehun tilted his head, realizing Luhan’s sullen mood. He didn’t understand why Luhan’s mood would change drastically every time he mentioned the word past.

“Why are you so upset when I mention the past?”

“I’m not upset. It’s just that it doesn’t matter. The past is the past. It happened. Nothing more, nothing less. Didn’t we already agree when you were in the hospital that you would create new memories? What’s the point in trying to look back at them now?”

Sehun fell silent. He recalled the time he was at the hospital and seeing Luhan’s eyes foaming with tears.

Sehun groggily opened his eyes, he tried to move his body, but it felt heavy. His eyes wandered around the room and he noticed a small boy holding his hand. “Sehun! Are you up? Can you hear me? Are you okay?”

Sehun tried to recognize the thin boy, but he couldn’t. His memory was vague and he couldn’t remember anything. Who was he? What’s this place? Why was he here in the first place? Sehun gradually opened his mouth to speak, his voice was hoarsely and dry, but he spoke anyways.

“W-Who are you? Is my name Sehun?” The boy’s face fell and he shook his head relentlessly.

“No Sehun, don’t do this to me. Not now. Not now. Sehun…” The tear ducts began to flow from his eyes, dripping down onto Sehun’s hand. Sehun wanted to dry those tears up, but his body refused to cooperate.  The door to the room flung open and two people came rushing in towards him.

The woman ran up to Sehun and she was also crying. “Sehun, mom did wrong. Mom was so worried. Mom will do anything for you, so don’t scare mom like that again.”

Sehun glanced at the women, was this woman his mom? Why was she crying?

Behind the woman was a huge man, his face voiced concern and worry. He was also on the verge of tears and Sehun was confused. Who were these people? Why do they all look like they want to cry?

“Who are you people?” Sehun looked around the room, glancing at each person in the room. The woman and the man’s facial expression went from worried to sadness and shock.

“Sehun? You forgot mommy?” Sehun looked at the women, he tried to turn his head to her direction and slowly nodded. The woman, who was supposedly his mom, began to cry loudly.

“I did wrong Sehun. Mom shouldn’t have moved here. Mom will do anything you say, so please remember mom.” The man beside the women hugged her and began to pat her back.

“You didn’t do wrong. It’ll take time for him to remember. He’s in shock. He’ll remember.”The man looked at Sehun; it was as if he was praying this was all just a dream.

Sehun turned to the boy who was still silently crying, the boy tried to stop his tears by rubbing them off with his arms. He shook his head and tried to smile, it was a lousy forced smile.

“Y-Your n-name is S-Sehun. I’m L-Luhan. We’re at the hospital and that’s your mommy and daddy over there. You don’t have to remember me, but at least remember your mommy and daddy.” Luhan sniffed and continue to wipe his tears that wouldn’t stop pouring. Sehun didn’t know what to do, he didn’t like to see people cry, he wanted them all to stop crying and tell him exactly what was going on. He wanted to scream, he was completely lost, and instead, he only managed to say a single word.

“Sorry.”

Luhan shook his head, not accepting his apology. “You didn’t do anything wrong. It was my fault. If you can’t remember anything don’t worry. Its okay if you forget the past, it might be even better to forget about the bad stuff. I’ll make sure to make new and happy memories with you.”

This time Luhan's lousy smile improved, tears still streaming against his cheeks. Sehun couldn’t help but think it was a pretty smile. He wanted this boy to smile more often, even if he was just a stranger to him. He wanted this boy to smile.

Sehun glanced at Luhan, he was visibly upset and Sehun didn’t like to see Luhan like this. “I know. I just want to see it, just for a second. I’ll return it to you soon.”

Luhan reluctantly nodded. Sehun frowned at Luhan’s gloomy expression and decided to change the subject. “So! Just curious, but do you have anyone you like?”

Luhan looked up at Sehun, surprised. “Uh… N-No.”

Sehun grinned at Luhan’s obvious lie, it was easy to tell if Luhan was lying or not. “Ah don’t lie, if you don’t want to tell me, give me just a brief description of the lucky girl.”

Luhan stiffened at the mention of girl and sighed. “Well, the person I like is an idiot, or maybe an to be precise.”

Sehun was shocked to describe the person he liked in such a negative light. “Why?”

“He—she keeps rubbing salt into my wound. Every time she calls me out, I think maybe she wants to confess to me, but no she keeps trying to find something out, even though it shouldn’t matter. “

“You sound like you hate this person rather than like.” Sehun commented, a bit confused if he was describing the girl he likes, or someone he despised instead.

“It’s harder to explain, that person is the one I constantly think about every day, no matter how many times they trample on my feelings, I think about that person. I care, I worry if they ate yet, and I worry if they’re doing well.”

“Ah, well this girl is lucky to have you crushing on her.” Sehun said, with a small smile on his face. Luhan glanced at Sehun and sighed.

“Problem is, they’re too dense to realize it and it’s driving me nuts.” Sehun slung his arms around Luhan and started to walk, Luhan carefully following his footsteps. “Hey, if she doesn’t take you, I’ll take you any day.”

Henry laid on his bed, staring at the ceiling while listening to orchestra music playing in the background. Every time he remembered Amber together with that guy (as Henry would prefer to call him that), he groaned in annoyance. “I shouldn’t be annoyed, but I am.”

The door bell rang and Henry got up from his bed and opened the door. Much to his surprise, Amber was at the door, holding a box of donuts. “Will Henry accept my apology for ditching him for the English teacher?”

“Depends on how many donuts you bought for me.” Henry opened the door widely and allowed Amber to enter the dorm.

“I thought you were busy all day today.” Henry took a donut from inside the box and took a huge bite into the donut. He always loved the powered donut that had strawberry filling inside.

“We finished quicker than I thought.” Amber placed the donut box on his desk and looked at the trash can.

“Wow that’s a lot of scrunched paper.” Henry followed Amber’s gaze and nodded.

“I couldn’t think of anything to write for the poems, they either sounded robotic or was just too greasy.” He turned off the orchestra music from his laptop and continued to indulge in his donut.

“Oh my, Henry, the king of greasiness and pick up lines, says his poems are too greasy. I’m shocked.” Henry rolled his eyes at Amber mocking him.

“You mock, but you probably can’t write either.” Amber shrugged at Henry’s retort and playful stuck out her tongue.

“You’d be surprise; I’m quite poetic when I want to be.” Henry sneered at her and finished off his donut, his lips to remove the powder remains.

“Oh that’s sounds so convincing, anyways did you answer the questions on the sheet Mr. Lau gave us yet?” Amber shook her head.

“I didn’t even glance at the paper yet, I’ll do so now.” Amber sat on Henry’s comfortable manoeuvrable chair and ped her bag. She pulled out the paper and read the questions. Amber couldn’t help but giggle at the last few questions.

“Wow, your sense of humour is real bad, bro.” Henry looked at Amber confusingly.

“Those aren’t my questions I wrote though?”

“Oh right. I mean Mr. Lau’s questions. Oh geez, what’s he trying to get at with asking about changing the past.” Henry frowned and glared at Amber. Amber looked up to see Henry shooting death glares at her, making her tilt her head in confusion.

“Henry, is something wrong?”

“No.” Henry grumbled as he grabbed his bag off the floor and took a pen from his desk. He then sat on his bed and opened his bag to take out the question sheet Mr. Lau gave to them.  He started to answer the questions as Amber continued to stare at him.

“I thought Henry forgave me with the peace offering I gave him.”

“Well, Henry is mad again.” Amber frowned and placed the sheet on Henry’s desk. She took a pen from her pocket and started answering the questions. They work in silence and Amber felt a bit uncomfortable.

After half an hour passed, Amber sniffed the room and there was a putrid smell in the air. She glanced at Henry and purposely sighed heavily to get his attention.

“What?” Henry peered at Amber as she squeezed her nose to block out the smell.

“How long has it been since you last took a bath Henry?” Henry shrugged and tried to recall how long it was since he took a bath. Henry found showers unnecessary, he would occasional take a bath on those hot days, but it was winter.

“I think it was a couple of days? 4, maybe?” Amber placed her hands against her face and shook her head.

“Henry you smell like crap, please take a shower.” Henry gave a menacing look to Amber and rolled his eyes.

“If you insist, your majesty,” Henry got up from his bed and walked to his closet. He took out a pair of sweat pants, towel, boxer and a big t-shirt. “You can go on my laptop while I take a quick shower.”

Amber nodded and went on his laptop. She clicked the internet browse and went on YouTube. Amber started to watch music videos of random singers.

“Wow these girl groups are really pretty. Wish I was in one. Being a rapper would be sick.” Amber continued to browse through the music videos as she heard a knock on the door.

“Door attendant. Open the door.”

Amber panicked and glanced at the clock. It was time for the dorm attendants to check everyone’s dorm. Amber, knowing Victoria, could come up with a great excuse for Amber’s absence. Afraid of being seen by the door attendant, Amber instinctively open the bathroom door and shut the door once she got in. She turned around to see Henry drying his hair with a towel and (thankfully) wearing boxers. Amber didn’t have time to analyze Henry’s perfect body as the knocking on the door was becoming more and more apparent.

Henry looked up and was stunned to see Amber in the washroom. “Gee Amber, you sure like seeing me in my boxers.”

“Henry, your dorm attendants here, do something!” Amber ordered as she quickly glanced at Henry and looked away; trying to avoid looking at his toned abs. Henry smirked a bit, seeing Amber flustered and nervous made him feel a whole lot better.

“Aww are you embarrassing? Look at my half body. I don’t mind. ♪” Henry teased Amber as she became slightly annoyed.

“Try to get that door attendant out, then we can discuss about your body.”

“I don’t want to.”

Amber felt her temper rising. Hell, she’d rather get suspended then going through this. Amber turned around to face the door and opened the door slightly. In almost a split second, Henry gripped onto Amber’s hand that was on the doorknob and forcibly shut the door. His body was now inches away from touching Amber’s back. Amber could feel his breath (smells like strawberry donuts) behind her neck. His breath was steady and suddenly the only thing she could think and hear was his breath.  Henry’s other free hand was placed on the door, encircling Amber.

She tried to escape from Henry’s grip by turning around, only for Henry to release her hand and grab her by the waist, pulling their bodies closer together. She could feel the wet drops from Henry’s body on her shirt. She struggled to move away from Henry, but he continued to hold her waist tightly. Henry gently placed his forehead onto Amber’s. The tip of their noses was touching and their lips were barely a few centimeters away from each other. She could smell the strong scent of axe emitting from his body and she felt his strawberry breath brush against her face.

Amber stopped squirming and slowly glanced at Henry’s face. She hadn’t properly looked at his feature and it was her first time seeing him from this close. Amber eyes travelled to his dark brown orbs, the ones that were looking directly at her, examining her features as well. Suddenly embarrassed, Amber turned her head. With Henry’s free hand, he held Amber’s head and moved it back to where it original was. Amber darted her eyes away from Henry, not wanting to give him direct eye contact.

“H-Henry?” Amber managed to mumble as her thoughts were all jumbled, she was surprised she could even mutter a word.

“Do you like Mr. Lau?” Amber wrinkled her eyebrows and gave Henry a strange look. She technically didn’t like Mr. Lau, but she was technically married to him. Mr. Lau is Henry, so technically she liked him wait—no, Amber refused to believe she liked Henry and shook her head furiously.

A small smile formed on Henry’s lips, he pulled Amber into a tight hug as he wrapped his arms around her. “Somehow, I’m relieved.”

The sound of the door being unlocked by a key was heard and Amber pulled away from Henry's grasp. “Okay, I’m going to kill you for this later. Get that dorm attendant out. Now.”

Henry smirked, “Alright, turn on the shower and pretend to hum a song.  Luhan’s not here and I need to cover for him.”

Amber nodded and Henry went outside (still half , much to Amber’s displeasure), just in time for the dorm attendant, Leetuek, to enter the room.

“Henry-ssi, why didn’t you open the door?”

“I was changing and Luhan’s in the shower, sorry!” Leeteuk stood silent and listened to the humming sounds in the bathroom.

“Alright, seems like you guys are in your dorms. It’s almost time for your curfew, so make sure to sleep well after you dress and take a bath.”

Henry nodded and waved goodbye to the older man as he left the room. Henry opened the bathroom door and gave Amber the ‘ok’ sign.

Amber came closer to Henry and kicked him in the shin, real hard.

“That’s for what happened just now. Next time, I won’t let you off so easy.” Henry winced in pain, Amber was definitely strong, he was surprise he was able to hold Amber tightly. He slowly bent down and rubbed his lower leg in pain.

“A-Amber you are way too strong for your own good.”

“That’s a good thing. I’m going to leave before the dorm attendant comes, ahh. Victoria unni is going to scold at me for this one.” Amber quickly grabbed her bag and opened the door slightly. She poked her head outside the door to see if there was anyone around, when the coast was clear, Amber ran out.

Henry placed his back on the walls and recalled Luhan’s words. The words were reciting in his head like a lullaby. Henry closed his eyes shut and thought of the girl that made him smile. The girl he always thought of before he went to sleep. The girl….that made his heart flutter.

“Love…huh….I shouldn’t fall in love though. Not now.”

Mr. Lau looked at the man in front of him; he hadn’t seen this man in while. “It’s a surprise to see you again. I didn’t think you would appear until Luhan and I accomplish our goals.”

The man in the dark trench coat smirked, “I’m just here to send a message, mind if I use some of your time?”
