Blindness

Normally, Chanyeol wouldn’t let anyone to get into him, to know him. Normally, he would be annoyed with anyone looking at his paintings or asking about his blindness. Normally, he would scare them off somehow or tell that that he doesn’t want them to be here, or just walk away. But at the first second he heard your voice, he knew that this time is different. He could feel that you two are similar in some weird, crazy way. Not only your voice, but your presence was relaxing for him. And the first time you crossed the doors to the art classroom, he already knew.

At first, you were distant, but close to him in the same time. You were distant because you didn’t ask useless things, because you didn’t touch him and you were just observing, watching him. You were close because you were the second person that was interested more in his art than in his person. You had no idea who he was, even though most of the students knew.

After a week, you got pretty close and not so long after that, you asked him about his blindness. And it was no problem for him to tell you the truth.

Chanyeol was sitting in the art room, touching the canvas softly and imagining the colours. But his mind was already waiting for you to come. To hear your voice and to feel your scent. His senses were sharper than in the past. His sense of touch, hearing and smell were recognizing you right away. The way you walked, how your feet were hitting the floor, or your breath. He could tell how many kinds of perfumes you had. And which one you liked the most.

He finally heard your footsteps approaching the room and smiled under his nose. He put down the brush and again, he found himself in a complete darkness.

“Hi,” you said, and he could swear that he saw a soft light somewhere in his mind, which like a fire started spreading in front of his blind eyes.

~*~

Every time he touched you, he could feel a weird, but good pain in his heart. It was a one squeeze, very strong and sharp, to be honest. In the same time, his stomach was tangling weirdly. Those two feeling were appearing every time you got closer to him and didn’t last long, but there was a wave of sudden sadness after you pulled apart.

At first, he didn’t realize why was he so attached to you. But suddenly, when your shoulders touched, or he accidentally brushed your hand, this weird feeling was there again. And he got used to it and even started to like it.

There was a time he could finally touch you without any obstacles. When he knew that you are okay with it and, in the same time, he really wanted to feel you. He was imagining your face in his mind. It was the most beautiful face he has ever seen.

When you touched him, it was a bit different. His heart was suddenly beating rapidly and he could feel the wave of heat flowing into his body. Your hands weren’t delicate; your fingers were hard because of playing the guitar and touching the strings in the instrument. But they were very warm and smooth at the same time.

Many times he thought that you may be laughing of him. He knew very well that his painting probably looked awful. Up until now, painting was the only thing he was doing completely alone. And no one could see them or watch him painting, not even his best friend, Kyungsoo. But he wasn’t embarrassed when you looked at them. You never commented on his paintings. You only watched.

~*~

A month after he realized that he’s waiting for you all the time, every day at the same hour. That he can recognize your mood just by listening to your voice. The fact that you could play guitar and sing was amazing for him. He wanted really badly to listen to you singing. He really did.

He never thought that being close to somebody would be so relaxing, but emotional at the same time. He never thought that one touch can change everything, or that the sound of someone’s voice can be that soothing and beautiful. He never thought that hugging is that pleasant and enjoyable. He loved to smell your shampoo, feel your hair tickling his cheek, your arms squeezing his back, and, he had to admit it, he loved to feel your chest on his and your hips being close to his.

The warmth he could feel at that time, that weird squeeze around his heart, that unbelievable happiness that was slowly overflowing him – he probably never felt anything like that. And at the day you came to him, with your voice soft and weak, he felt as he was about to cry because of your sadness. And when he felt your tears on his cheeks and the way your body responded for his presence, he realized that he loved everything in you. Not only your voice or scent, not only the things he could sense. He loved when you laughed. How delicate and simple you were. He liked that you cared so much about other people, and not about yourself. That you were mysterious, but honest.  And even though he really knew nothing about your family, past, or who are you in school, he really didn’t care for all of that, because in those past months he could get to know you just by your personality, and nothing else. And that was enough for him to know that he loved you.

“You should add more white paint to the clouds,” you said. Chanyeol smiled mentally and nodded.

“Raejin,” he said suddenly and could imagine you turning your head and looking at him.

“Hm?”

“Why were you crying at that time?” He asked, still painting. He could hear you stiffening and shuffling your feet on the floor. There was a minute of silence.

“My mom is a doctor,” you started. Chanyeol felt a wave of excitement and happiness. You finally opened up. “My dad passed away two years ago, so my mom had to start working harder for us to life properly. She was quickly promoted, but because of that I’m not seeing her very often. The truth is, that I didn’t see her for three weeks now” you said, exhaling deeply. “I’m just… lonely”

Chanyeol turned to the side. He wanted to see you, but he could only try to look at you. He wanted to say something, because his heart was slowly cracking, not only because of your story, but because of your voice as well.

“What animals do you like the most?” He asked suddenly, smiling warmly.

“Um… seals, maybe? The small ones, with white fur and all… they are funny, I suppose,” you answered, curious.

“A seal,” the boy mumbled. Then, he smiled widely. “Let’s eat something.”

~*~

He started to pack his things when he heard footsteps outside the classroom. He stood up and turned to the doors.

“Hey,” a voice said. Chanyeol smiled automatically.

“Hey Kyungsoo,” he answered.

“Ready to go?”

“Sure.”

Kyungsoo helped him packing things and threw Chanyeol’s bag on the boy’s shoulder. He himself picked up some canvas and took his friend’s hand, placing it on his shoulder.

They got out of the classroom and Kyungsoo closed the doors. Then, he started leading Chanyeol, who was holding onto his shoulder, through the corridors and stairs, talking.

“How was your day?” He asked.

“Good,” Chanyeol smiled. “And I have a favor to ask you”

“What favor?”

“I will paint something and you will write… something. Okay?” He asked. His friend looked at him with shocked expression and they stopped walking.

“Something?” He mumbled. “What something?”

“I have to paint something for Raejin,” Chanyeol answered, shrugging. Kyungsoo was staring at him, not blinking even once, and then he cracked up with a laugh. He patted Chanyeol’s back and they started walking again.

“Want to come over to my place?” He asked.

“Yeah!” Chanyeol smiled, showing his teeth and jumping from the stairs. He knew every step already.

~*~

“Kyungsoo,” he said, sipping his coke. He has been sitting on the couch and not saying a thing for a quite long time, when his friend was simply watching the movie and eating chips. He looked at him.

“Yeah?”

“I think that I may be in love,” Chanyeol said, turning his head. Kyungsoo’s eyes got wider than ever. He stopped munching on his chips and froze completely.

~*~

“Why did you even start painting?” You asked.

“I don’t know. I liked to draw a lot as a kid. And in the middle school, my teacher asked me to make a decoration, which was a painting of a night sky. He asked randomly, he wasn’t even looking for kids who can really paint” he smiled. “And I just started painting. And it was amazing. Because I was completely off. My mind was blank. There were only colours. And my own imagination. I just discovered that I’m talented” he said and laughed. “Even my parents were shocked.”

“Aren’t I an obstacle for yo-“

“No!” He shouted suddenly, making you jump. He felt embarrassed all of a sudden, but still, he never thought of you as something annoying. He liked when you were there. He wanted you to be there. “I mean… No, you are not. You are really… Not an obstacle,” he said, grunting slightly.

The worst thing was that he couldn’t see your expression. And it was driving him completely insane.

~*~

There was a day that he just wanted to hug you very tightly. He just wanted to hold you. He was waiting for you impatiently and when you came, he didn’t even start painting. You sat beside him and took out some sweets from your bag. He was listening to your voice and laugh, but he wasn’t really listening to your words. So when you poked him, he felt a wave of electricity going through his body and he almost fell from the chair. You jumped to him with a gasp.

“What are you doing?!” You shouted, worried, and helped him to get on his own foot. “You have paint on your back,” you added, mumbling. But before you knew, he hugged you tightly.

Chanyeol focused on that amazing feeling and decided not to care about dirty clothes.

And then, a weird thing happened: he went off just like at the first time he painted.

~*~

“Were you close with your dad?” He asked one day, when you two were eating. You bought hot dogs on your way to school. The weather was awful and everything was sad and dark. Even Chanyeol felt this weird atmosphere.

“Very,” you answered. “It’s still weird to think that… he’s not here.”

“He is here. You just can’t see him,” Chanyeol shrugged, like it was the most obvious thing on the world. You laughed sweetly, making his heart beat faster.

“I was always beside him as a child. We never argued. I was arguing a lot with my mom, but it was because of normal things, clothes, messy room, and that stuff. My dad never wanted me to do anything. He was sitting and watching TV, I was doing what I wanted. We never really talked about serious things, but he knew the best how to make me laugh,” you said quietly and stopped eating. “But, what about your parents? You already know about mine, but I don’t know anything about yours,” you added after a few seconds of silence.

“Because there’s not a lot to tell,” he answered. “I love them and they love me. They are really important to me. I respect them. They helped me a lot when I got… blind. My dad is working a lot, just like your mom. There are times when I’m not meeting him for a few weeks too. My mom is always home. She’s waiting for me to come back with a dinner. She sometimes acts like a spoiled child and she’s emotional as hell,” he laughed loudly, thinking about her. “She also looks a lot like a child. And she’s really short/”

“Why are you so tall then?” You asked, giggling. You grabbed his hair between your fingers and held them up. “You are a real giant!”

“I’m not!” Chanyeol shouted, laughing and running away from your touch. “I’m big, but I’m not a giant!”

“Everything in you is big, even your ears,” you snorted. Chanyeol gasped and touched his ears with panic.

“They are?” He asked quietly, his eyes wide. You laughed loudly. You both started laughing and ended up without a breath. Chanyeol remembered about something.

“I have something for you,” he said, jumping off the table, where you two were sitting. He went to his bag and ped it. He sensed the paper and took it out. Then, he came back to you and showed you a painting.

He heard you gasping and you slowly took the paper from him. Chanyeol smiled.

“You like it?”

You didn’t answer and he couldn’t see your expression. But then, you hugged him, getting off the table in the same time. He hugged you even tighter and held you up, making you whimper and giggle.

~*~

“So she liked the painting?” Kyungsoo asked, walking beside him.

“Yup!” Chanyeol said happily and suddenly jumped while walking. He clapped his hands. “I’m so hyper right now that I don’t know what to do with my hands even!” He shouted and threw his arms in the air. But then, his hand hit something cold and hard and he gasped. Kyungsoo started laughing loudly.

“A street sign” he said, giggling. Chanyeol shot him the scariest look he could, hoping that he looked at his friend and not at someone passing by.

“Did she call you yet?” Kyungsoo asked, still smiling. Chanyeol held onto his shoulder again and followed him.

“Not yet,” he answered.

“But you know,” Kyungsoo said suddenly. “If that’s the Raejin I’m thinking of, then you should know something about her.”

“What is it?” Chanyeol asked suspiciously, frowning.

“She’s really popular in school, you know?”

“She has a lot of friends?”

“No, but everyone knows who she is.”

“How come?"

“Because she’s unbelievably pretty,” Kyungsoo said with a sure and strong voice, making Chanyeol wonder.

“Pretty?”

“I mean, beautiful. Everybody thinks that she’s beautiful. No joke.”

“That’s kind of… weird,” he admits, a weird feeling sinking in his gut.

“Yeah, it is,” Kyungsoo sighed. “Here we are,” he said, stopping in front of Chanyeol’s house.

“Do you know anything more about her?” Yhe taller boy asked.

“Not really. She doesn’t have a lot of friends. Everybody says that she’s very reserved and something she looks unhappy. She hardly talks to anyone beside her one best friend and to the teachers. She’s not unpleasant, though. Just…”

“Mysterious?”

“Introverted,” Kyungsoo said, on his teeth.

~*~

“Are you introverted?” Chanyeol asked and could hear you snort. You put down her bag on the table.

“Excuse me?”

“I’m just asking.”

“Well, not towards you…”

“No, I mean, to other people. You don’t have a lot of friends, do you?”

“No, I don’t.”

Chanyeol nodded and made a wondering face, searching for the brush with his fingers. He finally found it.

“Why?” He asked after a few minutes of silence. He knew that he’s asking about something pretty fragile and that you have any rights to be mad at him right now. He prayed for this not to happen.

“I don’t trust people easily,” you answer, sighing.
“Why do you trust me then?” Chanyeol asked. “Is it because I’m blind and I can’t see your face?”

He felt you stiffening and realized that something was wrong. Or maybe he hit a nerve…?

“Maybe” you answered, stretching your forehead.

“That’s unfair,” Chanyeol said, looking at you. “Do you think that everyone is judging only by someone’s look? What if they want to get to know your character, your personality?” He asked, a bit vexed.

“You don’t know anything about the people that are around me,” you answered, emotionless.

“I’m one of them. And also, I’m with them every day.”

“Yes, but you are blind. You can’t see how people are looking at you, can you?”

“What, are they looking at me with disgust or something like this?”

“How do you know that they’re not?” You shouted suddenly.

“So I am disgusting now?” Chanyeol shouted back, straightening his back and looking at you with frowned brows. He felt a squeeze in his throat and couldn’t even swallow.

There was a long silence between you two. Chanyeol felt as something is tangling in his stomach. He was mad, but not only at you, but also at himself. But he knew that he was right; not everyone were the same. Every human is different. And you were just being unfair.

“I didn’t say that,” you said weakly. Your voice was now full of guilt, but something else too, which Chanyeol couldn’t recognize. “No, I never said that. I never thought that. I… I’m sorry,” you said quickly and he heard your bag being pulled up and hitting the chair. Your footsteps echoed. He turned his head.

“Raejin!” He shouted to the corridors.

~*~

On the next day, you didn’t come to visit him after school. He was sitting in the art room and waiting, but you didn’t come. He didn’t want to paint and he spend a few hours sitting until Kyungsoo appeared. His friend realized that something was off, but Chanyeol, surprisingly, was quiet and didn't say a word; Kyungsoo ended up knowing nothing, only suspecting.

Chanyeol spend the rest of the day laying on his bed and thinking. He was mad at himself because of his sudden outburst. He was mad because in reality, he didn’t know your past. You didn’t trust people easily. That was good, to be honest. But when he was trying to convince you to his beliefs, he didn’t think that you might got hurt in the past and you just don’t have any faith in humans, like he does.

So he had to change it.

People weren’t bad. People helped him when he needed it the most. He didn’t care how they are looking at him – blindness was blindness. They could stare at him as much as they wanted to. He didn’t really care.

What he cared of now was the fact that his heart felt empty as ever. But in the same time, it felt heavier than ever. He wanted to hear your voice, your breath. He wanted to have you beside him.

He missed you really badly and again, he realized a new thing: that he was a bit addicted to you.

~*~

When two hours passed, he already knew that you won’t come. With a sigh, he stood up and decided to pack himself before Kyungsoo will come to pick him up. But then, he heard footsteps in the corridor and he froze, because he would recognize this sound anywhere.

He slowly turned his head and the sounds became louder. Finally, the doors were opened and he could hear your fast breathing and panting.

There was a long silence between you two, when you were panting and trying to catch your breath. Chanyeol was only frowning, clenching his fingers around the brushes he was about to pack. A big, heavy rock fell from his heart and he felt relieved. He took a step forward.

“Raejin-“

“Chanyeol-“

You two shut up. There was another pause, and then, you both laughed.

“I’m sorry,” you said. Chanyeol’s heart melted in one second and his legs became wobbly. He held onto the chair beside him.

“Me too,” he answered.

“I went too far,” you said weakly, but honestly.

“Me too,” he nodded.

“I didn’t want you to understand it like this…” You whispered with grief.

“And I didn’t think of trying to understand you first, before convince you to my… beliefs,”  the boy added, clenching his fists.

“I don’t want to be apart from you,” you whispered almost inaudible. Chanyeol’s eyes widened and he took a few steps forward. He didn’t hear you moving away.

“Me too,” he said, smiling lightly and scratching his neck, slightly embarrassed.

“And I…”

“I missed you,” Chanyeol said, interrupting you. “So don’t leave me anymore.”

He heard you holding in your breath.

“I won’t,” you answered quietly and he felt his heart beating faster.

~*~

“Why are you so delicate when it comes to looks?” He asked one day. You weren’t mad this time; you wanted him to know. And he knew that you did.

"Everyone were always saying how pretty, cute and… beautiful I was,” you started, looking outside the window. Chanyeol’s brush was quietly touching the canvas. “I always had a lot of friends. But there was a time I realized that they are friends with me because of my looks. I was popular, so they were popular too; all of my friends were amazing, because they were people close to me. But they didn’t really care for my personality. They laughed of me often. I realized it when I started to remember some things. The looks they were giving me, or how they treated me, how they listened to me just to listen. They never talked to me after school or hanged out with me. They had other friends to do it with. I felt that something was wrong,” you sighed and scratched your shoulder.

“There was a day that we went to exercise outside. It was raining a few hours ago in that day. Everything was muddy and dirty, and we were running. I fell and got dirty, even on my face. When I’m thinking about it now, I’m laughing, but then, it was the most awful thing that could happen to me. I thought that my friends will help me, but everyone started laughing or making disguised faces, shouting how dirty and ugly I am now. But then, a girl came and wanted to help me get up. We ended up sitting in the mud together. She started laughing and joking, but I was on the verge of crying. Finally our teacher came and helped us out. We missed two lessons because we had to wash and dry ourselves up,” you smiled. He could feel that you were smiling.

“And that girl was Ji Eun. After that, we became friends, and I stopped talking to the other girls. But the worst part started at that time. Because… Well. They were mad that I’m not with them anymore, so they started spreading crazy rumors about me. About my character and how I’m for real. When someone asked then, why were they with me all the time, they answered that I threatened them or that they really thought that I will change when they will show some heart,” you snorted, but he could feel that it was painful for you to talk about it.

“After a week I got used to the rumors. There were still people who didn’t believe in them, and it wasn’t really something bad to me. At least no one tried to get to me. I felt good with it. So, they started doing something else. You know, like… putting my shoes to the water, stealing my things, leaving me notes about how ugly, awful and unpleasant I am. Some girl came and slapped me, saying that I’m thinking of myself as someone amazing, and that I’m just selfish. They were chasing me after school, pretending to be stalkers, they even painted my dog with black paint once, when my parents were working and I was in school. I didn’t tell anything my parents, but they soon found out, not because the teachers told them, but because they could tell from my mood. But still, I had Ji Eun, and I was happy that someone liked me because of my character, not looks. I…” You stopped suddenly. “I’m sorry, it’s quite a long story.”

“Go on,” Chanyeol said quickly, stopping his work and turning to face you. You took a deep breath.

“Everything was fine beside that the whole school started hating me all of a sudden. But I was really okay, I had Ji Eun. She was complimenting me like everyone, but not with jealousy. She was self-confident too. And she always had some jokes to say. I never saw her sad. She was always smiling, no matter how hard things were. But then, my ‘friends’ realized that what they’re doing isn’t working, so they did something else and decided to bully Ji Eun."

Chanyeol raised his brows and felt a hint of anger. He leaned closer with a shocked expression.

“What?” He asked with disbelief.

“They… started bullying her, but it was worse than when they bullied me. At first, it was the same thing, dirty clothes, wet shoes and clothes, some weird notes. She didn’t tell me about it, but I noticed. But one day she came with a big bruise and a cut on her cheek and I got furious. I went to the group that did it and started beating them up as well. They acted innocent. There was a big fight. When the teacher came, it all landed on me and I had a lot of trouble at that time.”

Chanyeol smiled suddenly.

“So that’s what happens when Raejin gets mad,” he chuckled and you laughed shortly. “Sorry, go on.”

“I was scared that something worse will happen to Ji Eun, so I started ignoring her completely. She was surprised and shocked, she tried to talk to me, but I was always… avoiding her. Everyone were happy because of that and the bullying stopped. But not so long after that, Ji Eun caught me on the corridor and literally pushed me onto the wall. She was really mad. It was probably the first time she got so mad. She said that she doesn’t care for all the things that they had done and this sort of things,” you whispered, embarrassed.

“I was grateful. I missed her so much. I was so happy that I have someone like that. And after she got angry, she started crying, so I started crying too, and we cried together, hugging. We decided that we will be together all the time and that we won’t let anyone to hurt us. After a month of ignoring those people, everything stopped and every time I saw my ex-friends, I was looking at them from up. At the end of primary school, one of the apologized to me, but the rest… I don’t really remember them anymore. But the thing is that I’m scared all the time. It feels so weird when someone talks to me, because usually, people are just curious about me. But I feel that jealously in their voice. And I feel bad. That’s why I don’t let anyone get near me,” you finished with a hint of pain in your voice. “And I don’t think that it will change.”

Chanyeol started thinking about it for some time. You were completely quiet. None of you said anything. Finally, the boy sighed and stretched out his hand. He waited. Finally, you took it, and he felt warmth spreading all over his body. He your hand delicately.

“I can’t change your way of thinking. But I got to know a lot of people in my life. And I know that they are not all the same. Not everyone are getting jealous of you. A lot of them is curious, just as you said, but I think that it’s a good thing. They are curious if you are a good person, or if you are just another selfish girl who thinks that she’s beautiful. Sorry about that,” he added and you giggled. “But you shouldn’t place a wall between you and others. How do you know that they are not like Ji Eun? Or that they are not respecting you because of your character as well? You are incredibly strong and everyone can see it,” he said strongly. You clenched your hand around his and he smiled, feeling you trembling slightly.

"People are good. And everyone is different. And that’s why you have to look at everyone differently,” Chanyeol said. You nodded and mumbled something, but he couldn’t understand. He only smiled and pulled you closer. He hugged you, sitting on his chair, and you squeezed him tightly.

He felt better than ever. It was better than laying in his soft, cozy bed after a very tiring day. He felt as everything got better for him. And he was happy that he knew so much about you already.

~*~

Chanyeol was sipping on his banana milk and listening to a guy named Chen telling a joke. He burst out laughing after a second together with Kyungsoo and they started clapping their hands like retards.

“I have to go to the teacher,” Chen said suddenly, sighing and getting up. “I will see you guys at lunch?”

“Sure, see you,” Kyungsoo said and Chanyeol waved to the direction his voice came from. The two of them were alone and the shorter boy leaned closer suddenly.

“You are happier today,” he said with a cheesy tone. Chanyeol almost choked on his milk because it sounded pretty suspiciously.

“Um… Thanks? That’s because I’m happy!” Chanyeol said, his voice deeper than usually.

“Something good happened?

“Maybe.” he mumbled, smiling like a kid. Kyungsoo slapped his arm.

“Come on, tell me, I want to know. You have been acting weird for two days and you are suddenly so happy. Something with Raejin?”

“Maybe…?”

“Chanyeol!”

The taller boy laughed loudly and finished drinking his milk.

“Would you mind throwing it away?” He asked with a smirk. Kyungsoo growled.

“NO!” He shouted, but started laughing and they both giggled. “Will you tell me or not?”

“I’m just happy. I always am. Something good happened, but that’s my business.” Chanyeol shrugged.

“Your business is my business."

“That’s right, but aah~” he made a puppy face suddenly and Kyungsoo’s eyes got wider. “I’m too embarrassed to tell you~” He almost sang, hiding his face in his hair and making his best friend shot up from the bench.

“Yo- You-“ Kyungsoo mumbled. Chanyeol could imagine his confused and blushed face and snorted. Finally, he started laughing.

“Oh God, you are an idiot! Why are you getting embarrassed now?” He asked, stopping himself from giggling.

“I’m not!” Kyungsoo said, sitting with a mad face and getting as far away as he could from his crazy, giant friend. Chanyeol started laughing again and Kyungsoo smiled slightly.

“Okay, okay” he sighed. “You don’t have to tell me-“

He paused suddenly. Chanyeol turned his head to him and raised a brow.

“What?” He asked with husky voice, a bit tired because of the laughing. His stomach was hurting. He got pretty nervous when Kyungsoo didn’t answer and frowned, straightening his back. “Kyungsoo?”

“Hello,” he suddenly heard and turned his head. His blind eyes widened.

“Raejin?” he asked into the air. He heard someone’s soft gasp and then Kyungsoo stood up.

“Hello, nice to meet you,” he said. Chanyeol could tell because of the sounds that he was bowing. He got confused and stood up as well, not knowing what’s happening, but happy that you are here.

“Chanyeol, this is my friend, Ji Eun,” you said happily and he finally got what’s going on. He smiled brightly to the side.

“Nice to meet you,” Ji Eun said and Chanyeol noted that she has a quiet voice.

“Nice to meet you too” he answered, turning to her direction. “Meet Kyungsoo,” he added, pointing at the shorter boy.

Not a long after that, they sat beside each other. You between Chanyeol and Ji Eun, and Ji Eun between you and Kyungsoo. At first, the conversation was weird, but it quickly turned out interesting, because Ji Eun found out that Kyungsoo likes the same movies as her. They got excited and started talking, so you turned to Chanyeol.

Your presence was making him melt almost. He enjoyed your touch and was leaning closer all the time, squeezing you between them.

But he knew that you didn’t mind.
