Kris's friends chuckled, looking around slightly. Kris waited, -face in tact and arms crossed. The small street they were standing on was nearly buzzing with activity as the three boys stood there- Kris waiting for his friends to make a decision, Chen and Lay trying to decide on who to pick. They were whispering to each other quietly, occasionally pointing off in a direction or looking away.
"Pick already!" Kris said, becoming annoyed and impatient at all the waiting.
Chen sighed, "Him. We dare you to see him." he said, pointing to a boy sitting alone at a table outside of a small coffee shop. His hair was dark black, his body thin. He was sipping a coffee awkwardly, watching everyone walk by.
"Fine then," Kris said, striding acrossthe street and stopping at the boy. "Hi,"
The boy just looked up at him, confused and slightly scared.
"I'm Wu Fan but you can call me Kris. Who are you?" he said, sitting across from the boy. Again, the boy just stared at him, his eyes wide. He then made a strange motion with his hand.
"Oh...you're mute?" the boy nodded yes and Kris sighed. "Well ok. Are you doing anything today?" the boy nodded no.
"Well do you want to hang out with me?" Kris asked. The boy hesitated a moment, then agreed and Kris nodded, "Ok. What type of things do you like to do?" The black haired boy stood up, taking Kris's hand and leading him down the street. There was a bounce in his step and Kris smiled. He almost acted like a child; it was charming.
The boy finally stopped in front of a building, looking up at the sign and smiling. "Martial Arts?" Kris read aloud, "Like Kung Fu and stuff?" The boy nodded. "Will you teach me it?" The boy smiled, leading Kris through the door.
He stopped at the front desk, smiling at the man, "Oh hello again, you have a friend here today?" the boy nodded happily and Kris smiled awkwardly. "You're going to teach him? Hah...well have fun; room 5 is open. Here." he handed the boy a key and he walked down the hall, Kris following slowly behind.
As they walked, Kris took notice that this wasn't just a martial arts school. There were bedrooms and other homely rooms along the walls. "Do you...live here?" The younger boy nodded yes and smiled, unlocking a door and leading Kris in. It was a large room with a skylight in the ceiling. "So...show me what you can do?"
The boy nodded, wrapping his hands in special gloves and demonstrating his talent. Kris watched in amazement as the boy jumped, punched and kicked the air. He stopped and smiled, Kris smiled back. For hours, he tought Kris different things, Kris trying to follow along though ultimately failing. At one point, he had a pole and was swinging it around, Kris caught it and they both stood, holding either end and laughing.
The boy nodded no end the teaching and began walking out. Kris followed him down the hall and into a bedroom he presumed was the boy's. The boy draped a white robe over his shoulders and began rumaging through a drawer. Kris sat on the edge of the bed, examining the two plush animals that were laying there. There was a panda and a dog. "I had a lot of fun today..." Kris said, spinning the panda in his hands. The boy looked up and smiled weakly, looking suddenly strained.
"I..I should go..." Kris mumbled, he then looked up at the boy. "Can I take a picture with you?" The boy nodded and came to sit next to him. Kris smiled, sitting the plush dog on top of the boy's head, the panda on his own. The boy laughed slightly at his silliness while Kris took out his phone. They took a photo, then Kris left.
Little does he know, that photo will be the last thing of the boy he'll see for a long while.
