Hot Summer 18/18 [REPOST]

Hot Summer

Four years can change a lot in a person. In your case, it could change a lot in your life. Not only did you continue your psychology major on into graduate school, you also made a lot new friends who all heard your story of "that crazy summer when I was nineteen". Chanyeol loved hearing and retelling the story to anybody he could find. After a trial dating period, you both realized that you two were much more compatible as friends than lovers.

Unfortunately, not all the changes were nice. In those four years, Tao and Kris both moved back to China, Tao to pursue his wushu career and Kris to pursue his dreams as an actor. You couldn't wait for the day that Kris' face was all over the big screen. You would be first in line for the movie premier.

But quite possibly, the most surprising and life changing thing that had happened in those four years was the unexpected, unpredicted total collapse of Lee Laboratories. Jinki's mother had turned out to be hoarding most of the money churned out by the company in her private bank account, and eventually her corruption was discovered by the press. The following backlash resulted in most of the stockholders in the company selling their stock, and the rest is history.

You still remembered seeing Jinki's haggard face plastered over the front pages of all the newspapers. Luna looked just as haggard, and it hadn't escaped you, or the press, that their wedding rings were missing off their fingers. But by that time, you had already made your peace with Jinki. In fact, now you found the periods of time when you thought of him next to never, but you couldn't deny yourself that you still missed his smile whenever you saw his grim face in the newspaper.

"What are you looking at?" Chanyeol asked, plopping down in the seat beside you. You unfolded the newspaper you were reading and showed him the article you were reading about the new shining star in the pharmaceutical industry, Kim Kibum with a "certain blunt charm that had financial advisors falling over in front of their desks".

"Screw you and all your fakes," Chanyeol read from the article. "My name is Kim Kimbum, not Key."

"Sounds like him," you remarked, lips quirking at the thought of Kibum. You hadn't seen him in four years, but it seemed like he was doing very well considering the amount of news articles you were seeing. On the other hand, Jinki had basically disappeared off the face of the earth although Park Laboratories was doing rather well.

"Have you ever seen Jinki since then?" Chanyeol wondered out loud, leaning on his elbow and grinning cheesily at you.

"Nope," you replied, shrugging, "but that's okay. Now I have a really good story to tell at cocktail parties."

Chanyeol regarded you curiously and then suddenly said, "Any guy would be lucky to have you. I hope you know that."

"I know," you replied cheekily, and then you threw the newspaper at Chanyeol with a loud laugh. "Now go to your boyfriend before I smack you."

"He's not my boyfriend," Chanyeol whined, but the flush on his face betrayed him, and you couldn't help but sock your cute, quirky friend in the shoulder.

Life was good. You couldn't deny it. You couldn't even stop whistling as you walked down the street to your apartment complex and then slowed down to a dead halt. You stared, blinked, rubbed your eyes, and then stared again. In front of you, your apartment on the second floor was exploding with color. Streamers, balloons, confetti. It was all over your doorway, your roof, and the staircase. Oh my gosh, your neighbors must be ticked.

Carefully, you picked your way up the staircase and jiggled the door of your apartment. It was open. You were completely sure that you had locked it on your way out before going to meet Chanyeol. Ever so cautiously, you opened the door, and your jaw dropped. This wasn't your apartment. This couldn't be your apartment. You didn't have a sleek black couch or a white spotless carpet. You didn't have an HDTV or mahogany countertops in your kitchen, and you most certainly didn't have a canopy bed in your bedroom.

    "Do you like it?"

You whirled around at the voice and nearly screamed before clapping a hand over your mouth. It was Jinki, but a different Jinki than you remembered and had seen in the newspapers. This Jinki was casually dressed in a black t-shirt and black jeans with slightly wavy golden-brown hair parted to the left and a huge smile that you hadn't seen for quite a while.

"I know I didn't ask for your permission or anything, but…" And then Jinki began to sing. You recognized this tune; it was the tune he had hummed in your park date four years ago, the one he had dreamed about. You still remembered it.

Whatever will happen, let it happen. Even I'm not too sure.
    Hello, hello. I acted confidently.
Hello, hello. I want to talk to you for a moment.
Hello, hello. I might stutter a little though.
Who knows? We might actually be…oh yeah.
This is not the first time. Truthfully, I've loved and parted.
But it's hard. Please believe in me. You are different.

"Do you like it?" Jinki asked quietly after he finished the serenade. Part of you was utterly shocked. The other part of you was wondering how Jinki had managed to get into your apartment, and the last part of you was screaming out of joy. You decided to listen to the last part and screamed.

Jinki's smile was perfect as he swept his arm across the apartment and then held up his left hand. There was no wedding ring. "I guess we just didn't work out," he said, shrugging.

You ran to hug him, hardly believing your eyes. "What are you doing here? Where have you been? What have you been doing? How are you? It's been so long! I can't believe!"

Jinki flashed you a smile that made you weak in the knees. When had he became this confident man? Four years really could change a lot. Without warning, the beautiful man in front of you got down on one knee and grasped your hand. You felt like your head was going to explode if you breathed any faster.

"My name is Lee Jinki," he said, slowly…proudly. "I'm twenty-six years old and majoring in performing arts including broadcasting music at Seoul University. I'm a divorced man with a passion for singing and a heart that was stolen during a summer relationship four years ago, and I'm a man with a purpose. I used to be Onew, CEO of Lee Laboratories, but now I'm just Lee Jinki, student. And this is all I am and who I want to be."

You pressed the back of your hand to your mouth, trying not to cry as Jinki retrieved a velvet box from his pocket.

"Four years ago, I didn't know who I was. Four years ago, I met a girl who saw me as Lee Jinki. And then four years ago, we broke up. We were both young and impulsive, and she said that we would meet again the future, so here I am. From the fact that she hasn't changed the lock to her apartment, I'm assuming she's still waiting with open arms for my return."

You grinned behind your hand and laughed quietly before settling down as Jinki flicked open the velvet box, presenting you with a slender silver bracelet inlaid with tiny sparkling gems spelling out your name.

"I hope that my feelings reached her through my song," he whispered, "because there's no other way I think I could express them better. Just to make sure, here's a couple bracelet to seal the deal." He raised up his own left hand and showed you the same exact bracelet except with his name engraved in gems instead.

"I accept," you said, feeling as if the smile you had would become so wide that it would actually fall off your face. "I accept Lee Jinki."

"You didn't forget, did you?" Jinki asked, snapping the bracelet around your wrist and resting his forehead against yours. There was no rush now, only the two of you breathing in and out.

"Forget that summer?" you asked breathily, feeling light-headed from the close proximity to your…what was he to you anyway? You knew. He was Lee Jinki, the person you love.

"Never," Jinki promised in reply and caught your lips in a searing kiss.

"And that is how I met my husband," you finished, raising your glass to the small, cozy audience in front of you. "Cheers."

"Cheers!" Chanyeol cheered from the front table in the crowd, holding up his glass. Beside him you could see his fiancé send him a death glare to which he responded by settling down somewhat sheepishly.

Tao stood up from his place beside you and clinked glasses with you, tears streaming down his face. Your mother and father both tapped glasses at the end of the long table and drank for your health, and Jinki took your hand, holding up his champagne glass to your lips. You drank.

Above you, the bright summer sun shone down on your lively outdoor wedding as if to signal the world's happiness on this day.

"What are you thinking?" Jinki whispered in your ear, lips just barely grazing your earlobe as you two shared a private moment during your first dance as a married couple.

"I'm thinking," you said, sighing as you rested your head on his sturdy shoulder. "I'm thinking that it's a really wonderful summer day today."

    "Yeah. It is."

You hoped for many more summers to come.
