A Second Chance
Junhyung’s POV
I was scanning through the newly taken photos, scrutinizing every detail. I nodded and smiled in satisfaction. The new studio turned out to be better than I thought it would be. It’s bigger, has more natural light and not to mention there’s three storeys!
The newlywed was my first client in this new studio. Other loyal clients of mine are still yet to come to my new studio. Of course I told them where it is. Who would be dumb enough to lose all the loyal clients?
Most of my clients are newlyweds. I wonder if I get married, should I just take my own picture?
I sipped the hot coffee while scrolling down the photos. I stopped at a picture and smiled. The groom kissed the bride’s cheek from the side and the bride was smiling very sweetly while sitting down and the groom was standing behind her, holding her shoulders slightly. Suddenly my vision was covered by another picture. An illusion of course. A picture so familiar. My mind wondered to some scenes that are impossible to be erased from my mind. Although it has been years since I last see her face, I could still remember her smiles. Her cheerful voice. Her sweet laugh. The feeling when I touched her hands, when I hug her.
I sighed deeply and sat back on the swivel cushioned chair. We could have been together. Maybe we are just not meant to be together. That is why such a small reason could break us apart.
I would have looked at the picture in my phone instead of having illusions of it. I would have kept it until now, I swear.
Unfortunately, I lost my phone during the move to my new studio. I searched all over for it. Never missing a spot. Even my bestfriend thinks I’m crazy.
“Cmon man, its just a phone. You’re a well-known professional photographer that probably earns more than 10 000 a week! Its time to get a new one,” Yoseob said while I was turning over office trash cans, looking for my phone.
I just ignored him. He doesn’t know what’s inside the phone. The only thing that I couldn't buy or get from anywhere.
My mum don’t get why I still think about her. She told me it’s just a puppy love. It doesn’t mean anything. People say you remember your first love the most. But she’s not my first. Neither was she my second. But she was my last. My last love that I only get to be with for a week.
After highschool, I didn’t get to keep in contact with her. We went separate ways. We talked, but not much in the second and third year. Graduation was the last time I saw her.
Well I did see her once across the road. She was talking on the phone and the road was busy. And so I just get to see her. That was a year after graduation. Now it has already been 9 years. Gosh I miss her so much.
Suddenly my phone rang. The constant ringing of the phone got me back to reality. I looked at the caller id: Yoseob.
“Whaddup?”
“Yo man! Its lunchtime now. Do you wanna meet at the usual café or I go over to your studio?” he said cheerfully. Seriously, people can easily mistake us for gay partners.
“We’ll just meet at the café. There’s no need to fetch me jagiya,” I laughed.
“Right… its just that I’m scared you might get kidnapped and . I won’t be able to live anymore!” he said dramatically.
I raised my eyebrows. “Okay this is getting weird. See you there Yoseob-ah!” I said and hang up immediately.
I got up, took my phone and keys and went to the carpark. I put on my helmet and started the engine. I have a car, but I prefer to ride a motorbike. I only use the car when I’m taking my mum shopping. What a good son I am.
I reached the Paradise and went to the café we always hang out. There were quite a lot of families in the shopping centre. Most probably because it’s the school holidays. It is right? Well I don’t have a child, how should I know.
I was already sitting at the café, waiting for my jagiya. Aishh he’s late again. I was just looking outside the café, through the glass windows, when something or rather, someone, caught my attention.
She was sitting down on one of the bench in the empty space of the mall. Her long hair was at one side so it covered her face. As if she knew I was watching her, she flips her hair, revealing her identity. I gaped. Its her. Its really her.
Her name was chanting in my head together with “Go Junhyung! Go!”
Without any more hesitation, I ran out of the café, leaving my helmet on the sofa. I ran so fast that I didn’t even bother to see that I had accidentally pushed Yoseob that was entering the café. Or as I see it, he was in my way.
I heard him calling my name but I just ignored it. I know I couldn’t let this one chance get away. Its been too long. Far too long since I last see her. Talked to her. I’m not going to let it get away.
As I came quite close to her area, I slowed down. I walked slowly towards her. Okay now that I’m here, what am I supposed to say?? And without making a fool of myself. I breathe in and out slowly to get my normal breathing back.
I stepped towards her. She seemed to be waiting for someone.
I touched her shoulder slightly and called her name. “Hyuna?”
She turned and her face was really shocked. was still wide open when she stood up slowly, looking at me as if I was some exhibit in a museum. I was shocked at her next action. She poked my cheek. My smile faded and my eyes were following her fingers around my face.
Finally she spoke. “Junhyung? Yong Junhyung!” that voice. Oh how I missed it.
I smiled.
