Chapter 1

Children running around, adults admiring the interior and exterior of the ship, some of them chatting with others, laughing and there are even some who look out from the railing of the ship. Parents are telling their children to be careful with their steps and not to fall down and it brings a smile to a young man’s face. The young man is looking out to the ocean, well technically, to the port where he can see relatives sending their families off, some are smiling brightly and some have a sad expression plastered across their faces. The look of joy is clearly written in the young man’s face as he looks towards a family who bids goodbye to their relatives on board the ship.

A woman’s voice echoes through the hallway of the newly launched Cass Star Cruise ship which will embark on its first tour of The Caribbean in less than half an hour from now stirs the young man from his reverie.

"Attention passengers of Cass Star Cruise, we will be boarding in twenty minutes. Please proceed to gate A & B and please make sure you have all your belongings on board and thank you for choosing Cass Star Cruise."

A young man in his 20s’ clad in a leather jacket, a black skinny which accentuates his slim legs, sunglasses and boots steps onto the platform to board the majestic Cass Star Cruise, a new cruise line which will be his ‘home’ for the next two weeks. Yes, two weeks. It’s been his dream to travel by cruise to The Carribean since he decided to start anew in the United States.

Ever since he lost his parents 4 years ago, Kim Jaejoong, a photographer from South Korea decided to start a new life and leave behind all the sadness of losing his parents, he decided to follow his best friend, Park Yoochun who is a journalist for New York Times. Kim Jaejoong embarked on his journey to New York one month after his parents’ sudden death. Mr. and Mrs. Kim died because of severe head injuries in a car accident on their way to meet Jaejoong who at that time had an assignment outside of Seoul.

His parents decided to visit him on his last weekend there since Jaejoong had stayed there for almost 3 weeks for the assignment for Nature’s Alive, a magazine which features great vastness of life and nature in the form of photographs (A/N: Imagine Discovery Channel’s magazine) and his parents thought that it’d be a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Kim called Jaejoong 2 days prior to their visit to tell him they’d be arriving around sunset on Friday. But, their plan was short lived.

They met with an accident which took their lives and guess what? The scene of the accident was just 10 minutes away from Jaejoong’s lodge. After receiving the heartbreaking news, Jaejoong felt like the world had turned upside down for him but he remained strong throughout the funeral and only after the funeral, he broke down and cried his eyes out. Thank god, his best friend; Park Yoochun and his long – time partner, Kim Junsu was there to comfort him throughout his process of recovering from his loss. Kim Jaejoong was just lost and he looked like a mess. Only after a month, he decided to move on and create a new life – outside of Korea. He needed his escape. Pronto!

Being the only child in the Kim household does have its advantages. Jaejoong is much attached to his parents and he’s not afraid to tell them how he felt and he really treasures them to the max. Him choosing photography as his career was his dad’s idea. Jaejoong has a tendency to capture any beautiful/weird/extraordinary picture either of himself or his surroundings.

His dad presented him with a camera on his 16th birthday and since then he’d been obsessed in capturing every moment of his life. After the loss, Jaejoong almost wanted to give up his career as a photographer but, life took a huge turnover when his photograph was chosen as the ‘Best Depiction of Real Life’ in the Discovery Channel’s Magazine’s annual Amateur Filming / Photography Award which was held in New York and he was offered a post in the magazine as a nature and life photographer.

Yoochun along with Junsu helped Jaejoong settle down in New York and start anew. They knew, even though Jaejoong played well to hide his sadness, he’s actually still grieving over the loss and both of them is trying their best to be his shoulders to depend on. Yoochun is a renowned journalist in New York Times. He’s been working for the paper for almost 6 years now and they loved him and his witty comments in his column. Kim Junsu is Yoochun’s long – time partner and is an artist; who paints and in 4 months time, he’ll be organizing his very own art exhibition in New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). YooSu (that’s what people call them in New York) insisted that Jaejoong live with them first and when he’s stable enough, he can move. And Jaejoong agreed to that. After 2 years living with Yoosu, Jaejoong bought his own apartment in the same apartment building as Yoosu. Frankly, life is going on quite well for the then 24 years old photographer.

Jaejoong settled down on his new job in Discovery Channel’s Magazine for almost 4 years now. He’s thankful to Yoochun and Junsu for helping him find his ground and start anew. Jaejoong has won several awards for his photography skills and people in the magazine love him for his awesome job. Now, 26 years old Jaejoong decides to take a three weeks break for his own getaway to Europe and he hopes that after his break, he’ll get more muse about his future assignments. Being a photographer all these while, he never forgets his camera or his so-called ‘baby’. He brings along his first camera which was the gift from his late dad on this trip and he hopes he can capture many great pictures with it. Well, he also brings his ‘work’ camera along, in case he’ll come across anything interesting to take a shot of.

Being obsessed with taking photographs, Jaejoong fetches his camera from his camera bag and begins snapping the scene before him – a family waving goodbye to a relative and the looks on their faces are what attracts him to take pictures of them. They are waving happily instead of sad like plenty of other families down there. A small smile creeps onto Jaejoong’s face as the kid waves him goodbye with a huge smile on her face. Jaejoong snaps the little girl’s picture and he waves his hands in reply to her. She blushes and giggles when Jaejoong waves back. Cute. That’s what Jaejoong thinks. He then moves to another spot where he manages to capture a scene of an elderly couple kissing their son’s cheek and the son blushes to the colour of red tomato. The scene before his eyes reminds him of his teenage years: when his parents would send him off to college and kissed his cheeks or sometimes his mother would shed tears and not wanting to let him go. Those times were really engraved in his heart. He smiled while looking at the pictures he has taken. He puts back his camera in the bag and walks along the corridor.

This cruise is actually for Yoochun and Junsu, who planned their ‘romantic gateway’ but unfortunately, Junsu’s art exhibition has been rescheduled to following week. Jaejoong wants to see Junsu’s third exhibition but Yoochun insists he go to the cruise instead. The reservation cannot be cancelled so, Jaejoong is here as substitute for the ‘couple’. Yoochun also thinks that this is a great way for Jaejoong to escape. He’s been working his off for the last 3 and a half years and apparently, he deserves a so – called ‘break’.

“ Three weeks… Hmm… I hope it’s worth it.”

Why was it so easy for YunHo to disappear? Well, as for Jae Joong for tripping over nothing, I can perfectly understand that. I have my name next to the world klutz in the dictionary. haha
