Tadoma | Kim Jongin Fanfiction

Just like any other student, Jongin took regular classes. He wanted to go into the profession of business, maybe own his own company one day and buy nice things for himself. Being a deafblind never stopped him from learning what the others could, he had an assistant that followed him to all his classes, fingerspelling all the things the professor said, she even took notes and got them translated into braille for him to study. Things were different for him, to say the least. He sat at the front of the lecture hall, allowing for classmates to view and poke fun at him, though he could never hear what they said. His grey, glossed over eyes seemed to freak people out, especially when he starred in one direction. The few times he spoke; asking a question, answering a question, or just normal conversation, quiet laughter and harsh comments could be heard from other students, those were the only things his assistant never told him.

Jongin normally waited until the hallways and classrooms cleared out before trying to make his way to his destination, it was easier for him to use his seeing cane. Bumping people’s feet or being pushed wasn’t fun the first time he tried it.

“Alright, so does anyone have any questions about today's lesson? Make sure you study the chapter, we will have a test next week on tuesday.” The professor spoke after finishing up the last of his notes, eyes peering around the room for any raised hands. Jongin had raised his hand once Mrs. Jane, his assistant, aided him in translation. “Yes, Jongin?” eyes were on him by now.

Jongin cleared his throat before speaking, “How do you determine the key stakeholders in business?” He spoke slowly, speech completely impaired compared to a normal person’s.

The professor tried his best to better understand Jongin’s speech, but some words were more difficult to comprehend than others, “I’m sorry, I didn’t quite understand. Mrs. Jane, would you please ask him to repeat.” To which she obliged and the disappointed look on Jongin’s face was evident, some students giggling at this.

“He’s so weird. Even the Mr. Oh can’t understand that retard.” One commented, which didn’t go unnoticed by a nearby classmate, who rolled his eyes and listened to Jongin repeat himself one or two more times, before ultimately giving up and just signing to Mrs. Jane.

After the question was finally understood, Mr. Oh smiled, “Ah, yes, this is important to know, thank you for asking.” He then turned from Jongin to the rest of the class before listing the key elements of business ethics.

Soon enough, class was dismissed, and as always, Jongin waited in his seat until it was okay for him to leave. Since it was his last class for the day and around lunch, he wished his assistant off safely before standing up and guiding himself out of the lecture hall, though he didn’t notice someone following him until he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned around, his cane whacking into something (or someone), “Mrs. Jane? I thought you were leaving.” He questioned as he reached out with his left hand to find the source of the tap. He sensed someone was close, feeling around with his cane for a foot or maybe just a wall, thinking he might’ve bumped into one, though his suspicions were confirmed when someone grabbed his hand. It was an unfamiliar hand, leading him to pull away, “Who are you?”

The person in question spoke back, only to furrow their brows when they realized their mistake. They had seen Jongin speak with two people before, one being Mrs. Jane, the other he assumed was a friend. He always cradled their faces with his hand, but the stranger never really knew why until now.

Jongin felt his hand being pulled up, flinching as he demanded once more to know who he was dealing with. His hand was placed involuntarily on said person’s face, but he complied and rested his thumb over their lips, leaving his remaining fingers on the smooth cheek whilst his pink moved to their jaw. “Answer me.” Though his eyes seemed to have no life in them, the rest of his face was filled with emotion, and at this moment, it was confusion.

“I’m Kyungsoo. Do Kyungsoo.” Jongin could tell by the vibrations of the person’s voice they were a male.

Moving a few inches closer, Jongin’s face looked to be mean-mugging Kyungsoo, but he wasn’t looking in the right direction, so Kyungsoo gently adjusted Jongin’s face towards his own. “What do you want.. Kyungsoo?” He paused between his words, wondering if had said the name correctly.Kyungsoo sighed, seeing as how suspicious this guy was of anyone he didn’t know, “I’m sorry, did I misunderstand you? Why are you huffing?”

Kyungsoo let a chuckle pass his lips, “Stop asking so many questions, Jongin. I just wanted to talk, is that okay with you?” He watched as Jongin’s facial expression changed to a softer one, even earning a small smile as Jongin nodded and brought his hand away from his face.

“I’m going to lunch, you can come,” He spoke as he turned the other way and started walking, following the walls with his cane, along with the braille on the signs posted every couple of yards.

Kyungsoo walked beside Jongin to the campus cafeteria, even helping in finding a seat for the two of them. He was ready to walk away when he placed Jongin’s hand on his cheek, “I’ll get you a tray and a drink, wait here,” smiling as Jongin sat, he went on to get two trays, taking a few minutes to ponder about what Jongin would want to eat. He decided on a slice of pizza and small cake for each.

Once he made it back to the table, he found that Jongin had out a book that’s pages looked empty at first glance, but as he approached he saw the small protruding dots that Jongin traced with his fingers. He placed the trays on the table, pushing one towards the boy in front of him as well as taking the book from him, making sure to mark the page before he guided Jongin’s hands to the food, to which a quiet ‘thanks’ was uttered.

Jongin finished his food quickly but left the cake alone for a while until they were ready to leave the cafeteria, he wrapped it up in a napkin and placed it within the front pocket of his hoodie. Him and Kyungsoo didn’t talk while eating, both thinking it’d be rather messy, so after their lunch, they went to the lounge area and sat on the two bean bags towards the corner of the room. “Why do you want to talk to me? Isn’t it hard?” Kyungsoo had already situated Jongin’s left hand on his cheek, his pitiful smile acknowledged by the younger.

He shook his head, looking into Jongin’s hazey eyes, “Hard to what? Understand you?” He hummed, “Maybe somethings are a little more incoherent, bust not much.” Kyungsoo could’ve sworn he saw the latter’s eyes beam with a certain happiness that screamed ‘finally, I don’t have to repeat myself!’ he also caught he slight flustered expression when he held the male’s free hand. “Plus, I’ve only ever seen you with a few people, so I thought maybe you’d like another friend.”

Jongin wasn’t very used to people approaching him to be friends, his only two friends from high school were in the same special ed class as him, that’s how they met. Baekhyun, the friend he dorms with, was determined to be mentally retarded as his common sense wasn’t really effective, and Minseok was hyperactive. “Well.. I appreciate it, thank you.” His voice was softer and a bit more genuine than before. Of course, he was glad Kyungsoo was kind enough to offer to be his friend, but he was still curious if he had a motive or not.

“This hand-face thing feels a little intimate, doesn’t it?” Kyungsoo jokes, taking Jongin aback, making his face scrunch into something unreadable.

“What do you mean? I’ve always done this, it’s the only way to talk to someone who can’t use fingerspelling.”

Kyungsoo let out another quiet laugh and brought one of his own hands to rest over Jongin’s, “ Well, for a newbie, it’s quite interesting.” the sentence was concluded with a hum and a ruffle of Jongin’s hair, which earned a small pout from the younger. “You’re so clueless.”
