“Uhh…you hungry? Do you like food? Food, you know?” he made gestures trying to act out his words as he faced a girl with a blank expression on her face.

Henry had spotted her out on the streets in the city, clothes drenched from the rain and hair stuck to her face. She had been sitting lifelessly on the sidewalk and nobody had bothered helping her up, rather they were only worried about getting themselves home to avoid the rain. He didn’t know what came over him, but seeing her curled up against the wall of a building with her soft and lifeless gaze made him want to care for her, protect her. So he ended up taking her home with him, like an abandoned puppy he reasoned.

She hadn’t spoken any words to him since their encounter. He was starting to wonder if she was a mute, or maybe even illiterate. But he pushed those thoughts away and had guided her to the bathroom and told her to take a shower, supplying her with some of his outgrown clothes and a towel.

Wait…does she even know how to use a shower..? He had thought, but quickly smacked his head to get rid of any other bad thoughts. He shouldn’t be prejudice just because she was on the streets and hadn’t spoken a single word…right?

As she was in the shower, he had prepared dinner for them both. And by dinner, that meant two bowls of ramen with an egg in each. He was never a culinary expertise, and he didn’t expect to be any time soon. Music was his life.

She had successfully come out of the bathroom, smelling of his lavender soap. Yes, he had lavender soap. His friends always for it, but he argued it calmed his nerves and his soul. (Oh Henry….)

Now, here they were, sitting on the floor of his small living room in front of the TV, with their dinner on the coffee table. She still hasn’t spoken a word, but just stared at the steaming bowl longingly.

“Umm..ramen? You like ramen?” Henry asked, gesturing towards the bowl in front of her. She just stared back at him with innocent eyes. Though her eyes were soft, her stare was still intense. He couldn’t help but feel the blood rush to his face under her gaze. There she was, a girl, dressed in his old pajama pants and his old high school basketball sweatshirt. The towel still rested over her wet hair and hung past her face. To him, she looked unbelievably adorable right now.

Quickly composing himself, Henry picked up his chopsticks and gestured her to start eating. After his first bite, he noticed she was still staring at him and hadn’t made a move to eat.

“Umm..chopsticks? No? Don’t know how to use chopsticks?” He showed her his own chopsticks moving back and forth, but of course, was met with nothing but a soft gaze.

“Mm..fork? Fork yes? Yes? You like fork okay?” He finally caught himself using incomplete, broken sentences to her. He mentally smacked himself, She’s probably not stupid Henry..just a little lost, you idiot.

“Uhh…sorry, I’ll just go grab you a fork.” He got up and started to make his way to the kitchen when he felt a tug on his pant leg. He stopped walking and looked down to see the girl clinging to his pants with one hand, head looking down.

“Is umm..everything okay? Do you not like forks? Or is it the ramen? Sorry, I’ve never really been good with cooking and this is basically what I eat if I don’t eat out, my friends always make fun of me for it, saying I need a girlfri---..man this is embarrassing, would you like ta

Chapter 1: Soft! So soft!!
Henry being to caring really melts me (also, I have a weak spot for Amber and her ship with Henry). I like the setting of the story, somehow I always enjoy those types of stories because they're mostly filled with so much hope that it makes my heart feel light. Although Amber doesn't speak it gets obvious rather quickly that she is both a sensitive and an insecure character and is almost desperate for someone to allow her into their life, but I assume she has been through many rejections by how shy, almost numb, she is acting. You wrote Henry's manners in a adoring way, his desire to take her home and comfort her with a shower, food, music and closeness.
I loved reading this story! Thank you a lot for writing and sharing this oneshot! <3
