Smile of an Angel

Can't Wait To Love You

Jaeeun POV

We arrive at the soccer field and off goes Matt running to his team. As always, I’m on the side line waiting for him to finish. It’s not like I hate soccer, it’s actually one of my favourite sports and I remember running after Matt when I was little with the soccer ball.

But there’s just something weird coming with Matt to his matches and practice. I don’t know anyone there and I’m usually just sitting on the benches by myself. When I try to talk to people, they ask if I’m his girlfriend, and things get rather awkward. So after coming a few times, I’ve been refusing to join.

After watching their first half of the match, I head towards the bathroom and come out to a little boy by himself crying. I look around and there’s no one else around. So I assume this little one has wandered off by himself and doesn’t know his way back. He looked no older than 4 years old and looked rather distraught.

I crouched down to the little boy who is still in tears and try to ask him where his parents are.  The only word I was able to make out was a repeated sobbing of “appa”. He spoke in mumbles, but also had no intention of moving or answering any of my questions. At that point, I was starting to get flustered.  He wouldn’t let me take him to find his parents, but he wasn’t letting go of me either.

Just then, a voice came from behind and saved me from the situation.

“Aigoo~ Why is our Jinyoungie here crying?” A man came and crouched down next to me. He gave me a bright smile and opened his arms up to the little boy.

“Come here and hyung will give you a hug” he said and the little boy scurried into his embrace.

He looked back at me and his smile was so beautiful, I ended up staring blankly at him. It was like a glow was around him and his eyes formed into the shape of the crescent moon.

I finally snapped out of it and asked, “Is this your little brother? I found him here all by himself?”

He picked the little boy up in his arms and said: “Ahh no, Jingyoungie is my captain’s son. We’re just having a soccer match out there. The other player’s are still on the field and this little one must’ve wandered off by himself again.”

‘Damn’, I thought to myself. Hyung doesn’t actually mean brother. It’s just what all Koreans call each other. I really need to get use to all this lingo. It was then I realized he was wearing the same soccer jersey as Matty. So he must be one of Matt’s team members, but I don’t quite remember seeing him at previous matches.

“Oh I didn’t know he was from the game. I would’ve walked him back, but I was just worried he was maybe with someone else and didn’t want to take him far” I explained not wanting to talk too much. I was honestly still dumbfounded that someone could look so…. angelic….

He then looked at me surprised and followed on to ask: “Oh, you’re with someone on the team?”

“Yeah, Minhan oppa” I said. Before I could finish my sentence and say ‘he’s my brother’ my phone started ringing and could see it was a call from my best friend back in Australia.

“Ah I’m sorry, I have to take this” and turned away patting little Jinyoung on the head before walking away.

Kikwang POV

I just walked out of the bathroom and heard crying nearby. I headed over and saw Jinyoungie crying and a girl knelt down next to him. This little one must’ve wandered off again from the field.

I was about to approach them but couldn’t help but stop and watch how this girl was interacting with him. She had her hair pulled back into a ponytail and wearing an oversized hoodie and shorts. I could hear her ask if he was lost, or if he knew where his parents where, but Jinyoungie was in tears and failed to reply.

She pointed towards the soccer field ahead and also back towards the community centre trying to see if Jinyoung would give her any responses. I could hear Jinyoung’s mumbles saying “Appa, I want appa. Soccer… appa” but I think she failed to understand his cries.

Seeing her get flustered, I stepped in saying “Aigoo~ Why is our Jinyoungie here crying?” her face light up and I couldn’t help but also smile.

The relief on her face shined through as if a savior has arrived. She was staring at me and I thought she recognized who I was, instead, she asked if I was Jinyoung’s brother.

“Ahh no, Jingyoungie is my captain’s son. We’re just having a soccer match out there. The other player’s are still on the field and this little one must’ve wandered off by himself again.” I explained, surprised by the fact she thought we were brothers.

“Oh I didn’t know he was from the game. I would’ve walked him back, but I was just worried he was maybe with someone else and didn’t want to take him far” She said, and I was surprised she was actually with someone from our game.

“Oh, you’re with someone on the team?” I asked, hoping she isn’t a member’s girlfriend.

“Yeah, Minhan oppa” She answered happily but interrupted by her phone ringing. “Ah I’m sorry, I have to take this” and turned away patting little Jinyoung on the head before walking away.

I hear her speaking English over the phone and was surprised at how fluent she sounds. Everything about her had me surprised, it was like, she was glowing.

For some strange reason, I felt kind of disappointed. Minhan has never taken someone to the games before, I should be happy he’s found someone. I sighed carrying Jinyoung back to the field.
