Our Scarlet Dance

Sharing a room with LeeYong is honestly like sharing a room with an eight-year-old child.

"Jennie?"

Silence.

"Jennie, are you sleeping?"

"Shut up and sleep," Jennie grumbled, turning over so that her back faced the male.

A soft giggle echoed in the dark room, "So you're awake."

"I am now," Jennie hissed, pulling her blanket over her body.

LeeYong hummed softly, "What are you going to do now?"

"About what?" Jennie replied through gritted teeth, her annoyance evident in her tone. Yet LeeYong seemed to be tone-deaf because he continued shooting questions. Truth to be said, Jennie hasn't been able to sleep in silence, in the few days that LeeYong joined the Black Manor, he apparently made it his goal to have a little chatter before bedtime. Even if it was currently 2 in the morning.

"Well, you've just uncovered a part of your parent puzzle," he shifted so that he was facing her bed, though sleeping on the floor made it difficult to see Jennie's actual body. "Aren't you going to investigate more?"

Jennie turned her body, a quiet shuffling filled the silent air, so that she was facing the ceiling. The blue light of the moon illuminated the room slightly through the windows, making the dark spot on the ceiling visible from her bed. Her eyes stared at the spot. In all honesty, she didn't know what to do with the newly obtained information. The clear path to go is to continue investigating the deaths of her parents, to continue with her quest. But a part of her felt... reluctant. It wasn't that she didn't want to avenge her parents' deaths. She did very much. But the shock of the discovering that her mom was previously affiliated with the Black Manor had planted a seed of doubt. She doubted if anything she knew of her parents were accurate, and if they weren't, she wanted to preserve the good memories and not have the truth of the matter completely shatter her childhood. It was the last thing that she had.

"Well, I'm assuming that you are," LeeYong broke the silence, and Jennie waited. "I have a small surprise for you."

Jennie raised her brow, curious and intrigued but not enough to voice her questions.

"I managed to track your old house and I made it possible for us to visit it!"

Oddly enough, Jennie felt dread creeping up. If before she didn't know what to do, LeeYong had just pushed her off and made it so that she'll have to continue her investigation - and she wasn't sure if that's the path she would take. She recalled her grandmother once telling her that things remain dead for a reason and it seemed like a good time to heed that advice. Who knows what will happen if she unturns a stone that was better left unturned?

"I think you're supposed to thank me at this point."

"Thank you for taking so much initiative, LeeYong," Jennie replied, the sarcasm in her voice was biting.

---

JunHong stood by the cold body. A flash of memory played in his head. He saw the vibrant colour permeating her skin, almost red, but now Rose's skin was a dull greyish blue colour.

"So?" He asked, tearing his eyes from the dead body.

Baekhyun pulled out a file, opening it as reading it, "Well, the cause of death is hard to determine but, as with the previous victims, she was drained of her blood."

JunHong fisted his hands, "And? Did you find anything else?"

"No, the lab is still running some tests on her blood. I'll inform you if anything turns up."

JunHong nodded, his head hung low.

Baekhyun sighed, putting the file on the table before speaking. "JunHong, there's no need to blame yourself for her death. Everyone's bound to die someday."

"I-I don't know," JunHong ran his finger through his hair,"I could have done something else- I could have saved her!"

Baekhyun pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose,"It's already been done." He walked closer to the taller male, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "You need to get it together. For Black Manor. And so that you can make Rose the last victim."

JunHong tilted his head backwards, blinking back the tears. After a sleepless night of thinking and reflection, he had come to the conclusion that he was the sole reason that Rose died. If he didn't send her. If he had gone instead of her. Perhaps she'd still be alive, breathing and smiling.

"I just- I feel responsible you know," JunHong sighed. "If I-"

"But you already did it," Baekhyun reached for the red box on his table,"Now isn't the time to pity yourself or Rose. You need to protect the rest."

JunHong chuckled softly, his eyes watching BaekHyun so that he didn't have to look at the body that lied next to him. "I thought you said you'd quit smoking." He averted the topic.

Baekhyun laughed, tossing the box back on his desk. "Are you my mom now? For the record, the seal is still on, meaning I haven't opened it."

The younger boy chuckled along. A soft beep on this watch indicated the turning of a new hour.

"Ah, I have to pack Rose's things up," JunHong suddenly remembered. "I'll go now."

Baekhyun nodded, waving the boy away. JunHong grinned in response before jogging out the door. There weren't many people up at 3 in the morning, but JunHong could always count on Baekhyun being awake. Ever since Baekhyun joined Black Manor a few years back, they've stricken up a surprisingly good relationship. He'd always go to BaekHyun when he felt down or sad or simply needed to talk to someone, and with BaekHyun's odd sleeping hours, he just became JunHong's safe refuge in the middle of the night.

JunHong sighed before pushing open Rose's door. A wave of reminiscence washed over him as he flicked the light switch on. His eyes fluttered for a moment as it adjusted to the sudden bright light, then it hits him. The emptiness of her room, the faintest trace of Rose's jasmine perfume and the comforting smell of rose from the vase on her table. He walked over to her desk, deciding that it'll be the starting point of his packing up. Even though she was already dead, JunHong couldn't help but feel like he was invading her privacy. He started by picking up her Guuci purse that Himchan got her for her birthday. Out of curiosity, he opened the bag and a red box caught his attention.

I didn't know Rose smoked.

He opened the box, immediately made more confused because although the seal was broken, all twenty sticks were still present. Then, a small piece of paper caught his eyes. He dumped out all of the cigarettes, reaching for the folded note hidden in the box. The note read: POI : Himchan of Black Manor. Check his criminal records.

POI? He frowned at the note. Why was Rose interested in Hyung's criminal records?

Then it suddenly clicked in his head.

Rose wasn't just anyone. Rose was a cop.

---

Jennie stood in front of the house, her old house. It was exactly as she remembered, a mini-garden in front of the house with the short wooden fencing that was purely for the aesthetics and did nothing to actually protect the house. She pushed the gate open, as LeeYong trailed behind her. Her steps were small and slow. The nearer she got to the house, the more ominous the house felt. There was something off about the house, something that she couldn't quite shake off or pinpoint. When she reached the doorstep of the house, she looked back at LeeYong, who gave her a reassuring nod. Her shaking hand reached for the knob, opening the door and was immediately hit by a musky smell and dust. The duo stepped into the house, and Jennie marvelled at how everything was as she remembered. An exact copy. Blue wallpaper along with wooden decoration. The only thing different now was the lack of furniture, the inch-thick dust that covered everything and the insidious vibe.

"You know for a house that housed 2 murders," LeeYong turned to face Jennie, "It doesn't look too bad."

Jennie kept quite but shot a sharp glare at LeeYong. Despite not liking the house, it was still her old house and she didn't like that LeeYong insulted it. She walked towards the living room, then to the kitchen, re-living her memories. She could almost see herself running around being chased by Heechul as her parents laughed at their antics. A small smile tugged at her lips.

"We should head upstairs. To your bedroom." LeeYong said.

"My bedroom?" Jennie narrowed her eyes, taking a step towards the male. "How did you know that my bedroom was upstairs?"

They had passed 2 rooms while walking from the living room to the kitchen, it felt weird that he knew that none of the rooms belonged to Jennie - suspicious even.

A flash of shock past LeeYong's chocolate-brown eyes, before a small sheepish smile spread across his face. "I guessed it was upstairs? And judging by your reaction, it is...?"

Jennie didn't back down, her eyes kept fixed on LeeYong. There was something off about LeeYong, she could tell at least that. But a soft voice in her head nagged that it was mere coincidence, after all, Why would LeeYong know anything about the place?

"Guess I'm Sherlock Holmes huh?" LeeYong managed a question, awkwardly laughing before heading towards the staircase.

Jennie eyed the dancer suspiciously before heading up the stairs, following him. She kept her distance, suddenly doubting the man that stood in front of her. Her doubt was compounded by the fact that they didn't know each other that well. His sudden appearance in her life along with the fact that he knew her birth name suddenly made LeeYong the item of interest. She watched how the male navigated to her room as if he had already been in her house before.

"Wow," he breathed, eyeing her room.

A soft blush of mortification rushed to Jennie's cheeks. Unlike her currently empty and dark room, her childhood room had Minnie Mouse wallpaper plastered to the walls with bright decorations - like the hot pink wardrobe in the corner of her room.

"W-we're not here for my room!" She managed, quickly walking past LeeYong and examining the room.

Her fingers brushed past her wooden study desk as a layer of dust formed at her fingertips. Disgusted, she wiped her fingers on her mattress, frowning when a sudden sharp edge hit her finger. Her eyes zoomed in on a white piece of paper that seemed out of place in her empty house. The white paper turned out to be a small envelope with an empty face.

"LeeYong," Jennie called. "Come here."

The male, who was inspecting her Minnie Mouse pink wallpaper, walked towards her. His eyes widened when he realised the envelope in her hands.

"What's that?"

"I... I don't know. There isn't anything on it."

LeeYong frowned, seizing the envelope from her hands and clumsily tearing off the top of it, pulling out a yellow card.

"Clue number one," he read, "A wolf in a sheep costume. Be careful, Jennie."

"What?" Jennie hovered over the letter, her eyes scanning the letter. "That's impossible..."

She pulled the paper out of LeeYong's hand, flipping it back to front and front to back, checking if they missed anything and hoping that they did.

"Wait no, they couldn't have known that we're here," she said as she stood up, "I only told you and Himchan."

A chill ran down her spine when she met eyes with the male because his eyes were void of fear. While her heart was drumming against her ribcage like a captured bird, LeeYong just stood there as if he already knew that it was going to happen.

"Hmm, what if this was left here a while ago? After all, this house was empty and-"

"No!" Jennie exclaimed, immediately regretting it. She lowered her eyes, calming herself and tried to mute the voice in her head telling her that LeeYong is affiliated with the murderer. She took a deep breath, "Sorry. I meant we should bring this back to the lab. Let's see if they could lift any thumbprints."

LeeYong nodded, grinning as he slid the letter out of Jennie's hand and into his own. "We should get back to Black Manor now."

"No, I think that we're still missing something," Jennie fiddled with her fingers. She wished that they missed something, anything that could give them a clue on the writer of the letter or at least another clue to point her somewhere.

"Come on," LeeYong pulled Jennie's hand into his, tugging her along, "We can always come back another day."

---

Jennie buried her head in arms.

It was a tiring day and she was glad that LeeYong had already fallen asleep. She didn't want to entertain his weird questions, especially not when her head was filled with them. She couldn't wrap her head around what happened. When she was saving up to fund her own investigation, she had envisioned it to be easy. Pay off a few people to rat out the killers, taking their lives with her own hand, and if she had any cash left, she'd move out of Korea and adopt a new identity in another country. But now, because of LeeYong, the investigation had gone haywire. She didn't expect that the killer, or anyone, would leave her clues. She felt almost offended that they left her clues, it was as if they were taunting her abilities to find out the truth.

A soft sigh parted her lips as she turned to face the sleeping boy on the blow-up mattress.

She doubted if LeeYong was really who he said he was. When she agreed to help him, it was because for a moment she saw herself within him. His thirst to end his father's life mirrored her own thirst to end the killer's. But now, she felt as if LeeYong wasn't a boy hell-bent on revenge and instead used revenge as leverage, as a lure, to tempt her. And to make things worse, she had fallen for it naively. She bit her bottom lips as if she was using the pain as a punishment. She hated how everything was a mess. A step-by-step guide had spiralled into a mind-splitting headache, except no matter how many painkillers she ingests, it wouldn't go away. The only way it'll be relieved would be if she delved deeper into the mess and to find out the truth about everything - her parents' deaths and LeeYong's identity. Even though it was the last thing she wanted to do, she'll do it if it meant finding the truth.

She'll dance with the devil if it meant getting what she wants.
