All Hikaru wanted to do was sleep.   He didn’t ask for much. Give him a pack of cigarettes and a chance to sleep in on his day off, and he was a happy man, but the cigarettes were easier to come by. He’d had a long night the day before, and hadn’t gotten home until almost four in the morning; he was off from Safeway and could practically taste the sleep on his tongue when he got home, asleep almost before his head hit the pillow. He wasn’t sure of how much sleep he’d actually gotten, but it felt as if his eyes hadn’t been closed for longer than a half hour when a loud knock sound on his front door, jarring him out of his sleep. He remained still for a moment, staring up at the ceiling as consciousness returned to him; the knocking began again and with a profane growl Hikaru tore himself from his bed and dragged his body across the short distance to his front door, not bothering to check the peephole as he opened it – he was just about ready to kill whoever it was on the other side, anyway.   The sight of both Shuya and Hinata on the other side of the door did nothing to alleviate Hikaru’s irritation; he glared at the both of them for a long, silent moment, blinking slowly.   “What, no ‘good morning’?” Shuya questioned, speaking up first; without a word Hikaru moved to close the door, only to have Shuya throw himself in the doorway in the nick of time. “Come on, Hika-chan, don’t be like that!”   “What do you want?!” Hikaru demanded in an angry growl, throwing the door open again. “Why are you here?”   “We’re going out!” Shuya exclaimed in response. “Let’s go enjoy the day!”   “I want to sleep!” Hikaru shouted. “It’s too ing early!”   “Stop shouting,” Hinata interjected, making both of them pause; Hikaru glared at him as he invited himself into the apartment. “You need to go out and do something with your life.”   “I know it’s hard to understand, being a college kid and all, but I worked last night,” Hikaru pointed out, ignoring Shuya’s “ojamashimasu” as he walked in as well. “I want to sleep.”   “You don’t have to be at work until what, five tonight?” Hinata questioned, moving to take a seat on the chaise across from his bed. “Just come back and go to sleep; we won’t keep you out that late.” Hikaru wasn’t sure why he even bothered arguing with Shuya and Hinata; once they set their minds to something, and set their minds to involving him in something, trying to resist was useless – the best that he could do was try to get food or cigarettes out of it as retribution.   It was in this manner that Hikaru found himself dressed, showered and out of the house, trailing behind his brother and his brother’s friend as they embarked on the ten-minute walk up to Sutter Street, where Han’s Coffee Shop awaited them. Breakfast was Hinata’s treat; Hikaru waited as Hinata specified the check details before placing an order for a meat lover’s omelet, toast and orange juice – the waitress took their orders and paused to peek at Hikaru from behind her eyelashes before turning to get them started. Hikaru didn’t pay her much attention, though he couldn’t help but notice the shy looks she sent his way as she brought first their drinks and then their food; he sighed internally, turning his attention to his meal.   “Hika.” Hikaru paused, looking up from his food and over at Hinata, who was watching him intently. “You know that the girl was looking at you, right?”   “Who, the waitress?” Shuya inquired, looking up from his phone and casting his eyes across the restaurant. He seemed to have spotted her; he gave a low, hissing inhale, tilting his head to the side lightly. “Ah, she’s cute.”   “And apparently into Hikaru,” Hinata concluded, turning his attention back to his own plate. “She won’t stop looking at him.”   “Did you see?” Shuya inquired of Hikaru; he shrugged, picking up his fork. “You don’t think she’s cute?”   “Not really.” Shuya kissed his teeth, shaking his head as he leaned back in his seat.   “I don’t know how you do it.”   “Why aren’t you going after her then?” Hikaru shot back, jutting his chin out at him. “Since you think she’s so cute.
