Cerdin's CairnThe cold sea air blew across the deck of the ship, sending Chorong's purple skirts fluttering as she pressed her hat down on her head. Her brown hair was twisted into a braid to keep the wind from making a mess of it, but her smile didn't falter as she stared over the railing.
A land was coming up on the horizon, the sailors had called them up on deck to point it out. She had already been on her way up to sit and draw the seagulls when she got the news, so she arrived first. Now a hand touched her elbow before the arm reached out to wrap around her waist and draw her close.
She looked up into Daehyun's face and smiled. "We're almost there," she said softly. It had been such a long journey by ship, paid for with the sale of the horses they had taken, but it would all be worth it now. Remasan was in sight and they would be safe there, even if Himchan and his employer went back on their word.
Daehyun's lips curved into a smile and he looked down at her. "To a new start," he mused, searching her face as he often did. It was as if he were etching her in his memory each day, a clear reminder that they were free and on this journey together.
She shook her head as she leaned in to his embrace. If someone had told her a year ago that she would go through such an adventure, come out on top, and fall in love with someone, she wouldn't have believed it.
