Jinah started to walk home after school, her backpack weighing down on her shoulders. She gripped her cane as she walked, spikes of pain shooting up her left leg, which was encased in an ugly silver brace.
She took another step forward, but her leg gave out as she whimpered in pain.
“Jinah!” Footsteps thudded towards her, and strong, but gentle arms helped her up as she limped, catching her balance.
“I told you to wait for me!” Daniel, her best friend of 15 years, scolded her as he took her backpack, slinging it over his shoulder.
“I thought you had basketball practice today.” Jinah quietly said, looking down.
“So?”
“So, I left early because I know you don’t focus when I’m there. Coach Lee always yells at you.” She mumbled, and he sighed, defeatedly as he pulled her towards him.
“Never leave without me, okay?” He supported her with his arm as they started to walk home together.
“Daniel, you have a life outside of me. You need to start living your life, not staying attached to me.” Jinah countered as she used her cane to shift her weight.
“Jinah, we’ve been friends forever. I can do this much for you.”
Jinah opened to speak, but Daniel shushed her.
“Ah-ah, what did I say about talking too much?”
Jinah grumbled, blowing her bangs from her face.
They arrived in front of her house, and she opened the gate. Daniel was about to walk her in when she stopped him.
“Nope, I can do this.” She interrupted as he was about to speak. “Daniel, I need to practice walking on my own too, now.”
He sighed as she gave him a pointed look. Giving her the backpack, she waved at him, and closed the gate door. She started to walk, but turned around as she noticed Daniel still watching her from the gate. She shooed him away with a smile, and shifted the backpack on her shoulder. She watched as he left, and then heaving a sigh, went to the front door, but stopped as she heard her parents screaming inside.
“IT’S BECAUSE OF YOU JINAH IS LIKE THIS! HER MEDICAL BILLS AND THE TIME TAKEN IN TO TAKE HER EVERYWHERE! YOU’RE THE MOTHER, WHY DID YOU MESS UP?” Her father yelled, and Jinah stood in shock, unmoving.
“Well, I’m sorry she’s a mistake! We both know we wouldn’t be married if it weren’t for our parents finding out about aborting her!” Her mother argued back, and Jinah held a hand over , eyes glazing over with tears.
“I said I would only stay until she is of legal age, and it’s she’s turning 18 in a couple of months. We’ll get a divorce, and she can figure
