A Fairy's Tale

Description

~

Deep within a forest, atop a flower, a fairy sits, awaiting an audience. Her thin wings flutter in the wind, and with her voice just as soft, she tells a story.

It was a sad story that made the flowers weep, and the wind cry. It was a story she talked about, she thought about, she dreamed about.

It was not a fabricated story. It was her story.

~

She had always been fairy-like, angel-like. She was beautiful in every way possible, from her face to her heart.

She had always believed that good fortune followed her. And then she got attacked. She barely got away, and it left her scarred for life, quite literally actually.

But then she met him, and he assured her that the beauty in her heart never left. She believed him.

She loved him.

-

Innocence. What has innocence become?

She didn’t believe in true innocence, maybe because she herself had always been tainted. Tainted by vanity was nothing, but tainted by a hard-heartedness she refused to acknowledge.

She had known it all along, but she never cared enough. She would soon have no other choice but to care.

-

He always saw things he shouldn’t, and his grandmother hated him for it. But as a little boy, nobody could resist the sweet smile, the innocent pout. He was a cute child… that much was undeniable.

And he had a beautiful heart, one that learned to love, learned to give, but never meant to accept. He loved her, but he loved everyone else too. He was always there, and she knew he would never leave her.

He was too kind hearted to leave anybody hanging, and so the choice was his: part with her, and save a stranger, or take her along, and risk her.

No matter what, he must leave. He must save the stranger. It was a strange feeling he’s never felt: something pulsed in his veins; tickling at his memories… he’s met this stranger before.

~ EXCERPT~

~

With the vast mirror before her, the young lady bowed, kneeled onto the ground and burst into tears. Who was she to control her own destiny? She stared into her own eyes in the mirror, and tried not to flinch. Did she really wish that face upon someone else? The scarred cheeks, once full and rosy; the bloody red lips, once smiling sweetly; the bright eyes, now pulled into a drowsy stare by the scars embedded onto a young lady’s face. Was it a face no more? She shied away from the mirror, crawling her way back to the hardened bed. Everything was gray in her world now; everything had shed its colour; everything had lost its spark. She hid in the blankets and kicked at the bedposts, but nothing hurt anymore. There was nothing more painful than losing herself amidst the beast’s growls. Why had she let the beast get to her?

She should… have just died.

~

“Tell me. Admit it. Show me the mirror.” Her voice was crisp, to the point, almost confident if she didn’t put so much effort into putting up a feminine front.

She was a strong lady, even at such a young age. Twelve years of age, exactly, if she were to count that night, for it was her birthday banquet.

The servants around her bustled around busily, trying to pin the loose fabric onto her fragile body. How she had managed to lose a few inches in her waist in a matter of a few weeks was a secret she was not willing to tell.

Not that anybody wanted to know. Who didn’t know that the royal couple’s young daughter was spoilt, rich, and beautiful by effort? She had been born a thin little creature, hardly human looking in her mother’s arms. With her mother’s lessons of course, the girl had grown up valuing nothing more than her own appearance. Beauty was all she needed. In time, her hard work paid off, and she was the prettiest girl for cities and cities over. People came from around the world just to steal a glance of her.

With the beauty came a price, the price of vanity so clear to all, nobody dared approach her.

She never looked away from her mirror, either. She didn’t need a best friend, when she had a mirror instead. The mirror was ancient, its scratches and tears making the outer wooden edge appear broken and ugly. She loved it regardless. The mirror’s clear screen reflected only what she wanted to see: her beauty. It seemed to highlight her pink lips, and her large, clear eyes. It seemed to know her.

She peered in it again and reminded herself smugly that she only became prettier with every passing second.

“I declare I must use the ladies room,” She told her servants, smacking their dirty hands away and heading for the southern hall.

The clicks of her high heeled shoes would be the last they ever hear of her.

~

“How come the flowers whisper words, Grandmother?”

“How do the birds fly so high, but always know when I need them?”

“How do I fly, Grandmother?”

“Shush this nonsense right this moment, Jinki.” An old, fragile seeming woman sighed from her rocking chair nearby. How she couldn’t stand this boy’s chitter chatter!

Only a mere 12 year old boy, yet his mind went crazy with fantasized images and stories. She hated it. She hated the creativity he possessed, the one thing that reminded her of her dead husband.

“When’s mother coming to get me?” Jinki asked, his grandmother’s sullen expression not tainting his happy mood. How he loved nature… and how nature loved him. He always did see what others disregarded as impossible.

“She’s not coming back. She doesn’t want you. Hell, I don’t even want you, but your father lives up to his word and pays me each week, so I shall see to your survival until he dies… or I die.”

“But I love you grandmother.” Jinki smiled, hugging at her legs.

“And she loves you too. Trust my word.” Jinki heard the cat meow, and he bowed his head in the cat’s direction. It is true; the cat knows his grandmother better than he did.

But his grandmother did not reply. She took a slow drag on her pipe, and blew out a breath that curled around Jinki and made him think he was in a dream.

“Rest… rest…” He heard her whisper. But just before his eyes closed, and could hear nothing more, he heard her whisper “Don’t let the fairies hear your dreams.”
