Trickery

Fated

A few weeks passed and Jamie thanked whatever force that prevented any possible encounter with her childhood friend. She wasn’t the typical damsel in distress from just a heartbreak.

No, Jamie was an adult.

She’s facing these ungodly emotions by just trying her complete best to avoid him.

Just, you know, the adult way.

She honestly couldn’t believe her luck when she found out the reason why Jimin wasn’t contacting her because the marketing department were busy with a large project that was set to debut this following month.

From her tinted lips, a sigh escaped as she stood in front of the lobby elevator. She just finished a meeting with an associate from one of the companies they were collaborating with. Since the other was on the older side, Jamie stayed longer than planned due to the multiple tangents and ramblings about life that occurred. She blamed herself for even mentioning that she was a fresh graduate. Her hands threaded through her silky black hair then adjusting her peach blouse.

“Jimin?”

She instinctively looks to where she was called, eyes wide like a deer in headlights. Her gaze laid upon a male wearing a typical business suit, briefcase in hand. His black hair was casually styled, opting out of the usual clean sleek back look most male workers leaned towards. If Jamie wasn’t paying attention, he would’ve looked like a typical worker in the building. But, as soon as her eyes met the gaze of the stern looking male, she couldn’t hide her excitement. The other must’ve saw it coming since his icy stare was replaced with his rare heartwarming smile, eyes turning into moon crescents and pink gums on display.

“Suga Oppa?!” she almost yelled out his name is complete astonishment. She would’ve ran up to him but one, she was wearing heels and two, they were in her workplace. So, she went with speed walking towards him and giving him a friendly hug, which was returned back from the male, who chuckled at how odd she looked while doing so.

“It’s Yoongi to you now,” he couldn’t help but smile at the warm familiarity of the nickname given to him since his college years.

Jimin scrunched her face and angled her head upwards to meet his gaze. “It’s sounds weird though.”

“Are you trying to say my real name is weird?” the male cocked his eyebrow, voice tickling for a challenge.

Instead of feeling intimidated like many others would, the girl laughed at the familiar banter they would often throw each other. “Of course not, I would never say something like that to a senior, would I?” she said with a playful eye roll.

“I didn’t know you started working here.”

“I started working here for a few months only, so I’m still quite new.”

“Wow,” he said, his voice sounding airy that it almost came out as a sigh, “I can’t believe the Park Jimin I knew in college is actually an office woman now.”

She watched as the latter eye her up and down, making her face burn. She sent him a glare which only received a laugh. “Hey, I matured after a few years you know.”

“You still seem the same to me.”

Jimin threateningly raised a fist at him, ready to wipe the smirk on his face like she did in college. “Now, now, Jimin. We are at a workplace, more specifically your workplace.”

Huffing, she relinquished the grip in her fingers and gave a look at him. “By the way, what are you doing here anyways?”

The older male lifted a clear file in his hand that Jimin didn’t notice until now. It read “Big Hit x Nature Co. Spring Project.”

“You’re here for a collaboration project?” she questioned after gathering a few hints from the cover of the file.

“Exactly. I’m supposed to be meeting the marketing team for your company to discuss more about the project.”

“Oh,” Jimin replied and took a longer look at her friend’s face. “Don’t push yourself too much, you’ll get even darker circles than the ones you had during college.”

“Don’t worry about me, you brat.” He placed the file between his arm and armpit, freeing his hands to pinch the chubby cheeks in front of him. “You’re the one who’s getting thin.”

“Oppa!!” Jimin whined through the grasp of Yoongi’s fingers, using her hands to push him away. The other gave a loud laugh, which earned a glare from the girl as she massaged her precious cheeks.

“Yoongi-shi?”

The two paused and looked at the direction of the voice.
“Oh, Jimin-shi,” Yoongi gave a curt nod which the other returned back as he walked closer to them. Jamie noticed the short glances the male, who is the main reason for her distress the past week was giving her and she just wanted to fade away in the background.

“I’m sorry for being late to the meeting.”
Yoongi shook his head and gave a polite smile. “Don’t worry, I just arrived and just happened to have met a junior of mine.”

Hearing this, Jimin looked at the female’s way and she couldn’t help but immediately look away from him. Jamie’s whole body froze, the tingling pain in her cheeks already disappearing. As she was silently watching the two greet each other, she had to use all her willpower to stop herself from running out of the lobby at that very moment. The times she wished for attention are always granted when she didn’t want it the most.

“Did you just arrive, too?” Jamie felt the question directed to her and cursed at heart for beating just by his sweet voice.

She looked up and met his gaze, not wanting to be rude. “Y-yeah, I just finished my meeting with a client earlier.”

Staring into the chocolate orbs that are his eyes, Jimin couldn’t help but melt even more when he gave a gentle smile that she wished she could keep only to herself. She could only hope that no one can hear the pounding of her heart right now.

“That’s good. Make sure you take care of yourself, okay?”

Jamie shyly nodded. Jimin smiled adoringly at her shyness, already forgetting that there was someone else besides the two of them - Jamie was also a guilty.

“Ahh,” the two looked at Yoongi, “are you guys dating?”

There was pause.

Jamie’s eyes widened and she felt as if the whole world collapsed below her feet. She swore her heart stopped beating and almost saw the light to the other world.

“Ah, no we-”

“OF COURSE NOT!” Jamie’s sudden outburst interrupted Jimin, who was just as surprised as Yoongi was. Realizing what she had done, Jamie cursed under her breath and quickly dismissed herself. “I’ll see you guys later!”

She managed to reach her car at a record time, an impressive feat especially with high heels on. But, Jamie could care less and only wanted the pounding of her heart against her chest to stop. That, and have what happened earlier to be a dream.

Her phone rang, echoing in the silence of her bedroom. The device vibrated against the cool wood of her dresser table. She stopped typing on her laptop and got up to pick up the needy thing.

“Hello?”

“Jimina, it’s Yoongi.”
Surprised, she cleared her voice. “O-oh, hello Oppa!”

“Sorry for suddenly calling you out of the blue.”

The girl shook her head even though the other person wasn’t in front of her. “No, it’s okay! I’m really sorry about leaving so suddenly earlier before.”

“It’s fine, I’m sure you had your reasons,” he replied coolly, reminding Jamie why she liked him the best among her seniors. “If you’re free, do you want to get a drink tonight?”

Jamie glanced at the clock. 9:30 PM. It wasn’t too late.

“Sure, I’m free.”

“Okay, send me your address. I’ll pick you up.”

It’s 10:50 PM. She’s been sitting in the booth of a small pub with her college senior for more than an hour. They were simply reminiscing the past and laughing at the inside jokes they would only understand. She was enjoying herself as they talked and drank through the night. But, she wasn’t definitely not prepared for the question Yoongi launched at her as she was taking a drink from her glass.

“So you like Park Jimin, huh?”

She almost spat out her drink in front of the other but managed to swallow it down and ended up coughing violently due to the burning sensation of the liquid and the uncomfortable feeling of the liquid going through the wrong pipe.

“W-what a-are you t-talking about?!”

The older male gave a knowing expression. “You know what I’m talking about Jamie.”
“I-I don’t!” she denied, voice ending in a higher pitch than she meant to make.

The male took a sip from his glass and placed it back onto the table slowly. He gave a hard stare at the other, who began to shrink under his gaze. Fortunately for him, he didn’t have to try too hard since the girl easily gave up, knowing she will never win against him.

“O-okay, fine. I like him. Happy now?”

“Did you confess to him yet?”

Jamie furiously shook her head and leaned forward. “I absolutely can’t!”

“What? Why?”

“Well… For starters, we’ve been childhood friends since we were in diapers,” Jamie began, unconsciously grasping the glass cup in her hands.

The male rolled his eyes. “Not that bull, you can’t be scared of destroying your friendship when you are practically destroying it by ignoring him.”

“I-I’m not ignoring him!” she tried to argue but meeting the eyes of the other, she slumped in defeat. “Okay, fine. But, he also has a girlfriend.” She observed as the person in front of her pause and process what she was saying, as if determining whether or not she was saying is the truth or not.

“Are you sure he has a girlfriend?” he questioned.

She sighed, “I heard it from a friend.”

“So you didn’t hear it from him?” he took a drink from his glass.

“Do I really need to ask?” Jamie groaned. “I don’t need more heartbreaks.”

“You might not experience it if you asked,” Yoongi mumbled.

“What?”

“Nothing,” he replied back with a sly smile. “I doubt he has a girlfriend, especially by the way he talked about you after you left.”

Jamie’s ears perked up at the topic, all her attention gathered at what the other was saying. “W-what are you talking about?”
He grinned. “You know when you abruptly left, he kept glancing at your way as he was talking.”

“He was probably just worried about me. He’s always been that way since we were children.”

“He asked me what was my association was with you.”

Jamie took a drink from her glass. “That’s normal. He was probably just curious since we were acting pretty close in the lobby.”

Yoongi shook his head, earning a frown from Jamie. “Not by the way he looked at me with such jealous eyes when I talked about our college years together.”

“Wait, just what did you tell him?!”

“Well…” he hummed. “I told him how we met in a school club and got close through music and stuff.”

Jimin sighed in relief, “Good, I thought you told him something ridiculous-”
“And that we used to date.”

Wide eyed, Jamie looked at him horrified and unsure if she heard correctly. “YOU SAID WHAT?!”

“I told him we went out with each other for a year,” Yoongi nonchalantly explained as if nothing was wrong with what he was saying.

“B-but, we never did!”

“He doesn’t know that."

The girl groaned loudly and stomped her foot underneath the table. She didn’t care if anyone was looking at her, she just wanted to die right now. She buried her face in her hands and muffled the screams she wanted to release.

“Why are you doing this to me?!” she cried.

Yoongi shrugged. “It’s been a while since I’ve had fun.”

She blinked at him in disbelief. “Fun… FUN?!” Man, she swore, he was lucky that she was buzzed or else she would’ve sent a flying punch straight at his face even if he was her precious senior from college.

“Anyway, make sure you don’t have anything planned next Saturday,” he said, finishing his glass with a last swing. He takes out a paper from the inside of his coat pocket and slides it in front of the distressed female. “You are going to be my partner.”

Jamie reads the fine print at the top of the paper. BH x Nature Co. Launch Party. She stares at it for a good minute before processing what the male said and the paper in front of her.

Launch Party.

Collaboration.

Project.

Marketing team.

Park Jimin.

“NO.”

“This wasn’t an offer,” he smirked and Jamie could’ve sworn she saw the devil. “Let’s have fun, ex-girlfriend.”

She should’ve stayed home afterall.

Chapter 1: This is so good! Reading chapter one felt like it was a oneshot; it was already fulfilling—seemingly to have left it in an open ending—but turns out, it's a chaptered fic! I'm going to read forth. ^^;

Oh, before I forget, I think /hesitant/ could have been better used instead of /hesitate/ as used in the following contexts: in 'At first, he became stiff and hesitate' and 'Hesitate, Jimin decided now was the time to tell her.' Also, I think I spotted some missing articles and prepositions (a, in..) which are very easy to overlook while proofreading so it's understandable. ^^;; These don't interfere with your flow but just wanted to let you know. Anyway yeah, I'm gonna continue reading because the feels are just starting to dive in jasdjds
