Their Re-Encounter

Fated

“How are you?” he asked, breaking the silence between them.

They had greeted each other and took their seat at the table Jamie was at. Both of them held the menus in their hands and looked through the items even though they already knew what they wanted.

“I-I’ve been doing good,” she replied back, trying to act as nonchalant as possible. Her stuttering was probably giving it away but she doesn’t have much time to think about it. “I’m graduating soon.”

“Congratulations,” he said with a smile.

It was one of his genuine smiles, the one when his eyes would form into two deep moon crescents and pupils becoming nonexistent.

She didn’t know how much she missed it until now.

“How are you doing oppa? I never knew where you ended up working at ever since we lost contact.”

“Oh, I’ve been working in the marketing sector for a company near here. Nothing too spectacular.”

The girl placed her menu down and looked at him with a frown. “It must be tiring huh?”

Jimin shook his head. “It’s not, don’t worry,” he assured her, voice and eyes equally dripping in honey that would make any girl melt. Jimin was about to complain to him to tell her the truth- the faint dark circles below his eyes told her otherwise - but a waitress interrupts them to take their order.

The two ordered their usual: Jimin with his club sandwich and Jamie with her breakfast style crepe. As they ordered, Jamie couldn’t help but notice the way the waitress tried to indiscreetly flirt with Jimin by focusing her gaze mostly on Jimin and fluttering her eyes occasionally. Jamie watched as Jimin remained unfazed by such actions. It must be normal for him, Jamie thought, feeling slightly uncomfortable. She glanced at their reflection on the glass window. She sighed, obviously no one would think they would be dating.

“What’s wrong?” his voice snapped her back into reality. “Are you stressed about something?”

She quickly denied. “It’s nothing, don’t worry about it!” Jamie tried to reassure him with a smile. A smile then turned into a small giggle.

“What’s so funny?” he asked this time.

“Nothing, it’s just that you really are still the same Jimin oppa I know. Still caring as ever.”

This time, it was Jimin’s turn to feel slightly flustered. He shook his head with a shy smile that almost made Jamie’s heart flutter. “Anyways, which degree are you graduating with?”

“Oh, I’m graduating with a BS in Management.”

“Did you already start planning on applying for any specific companies?”

“Yeah, I have a few that I started writing a resume for.”

“That’s good. If you need any help, you could ask me,” he offered, taking a quick sip from his ice water.

Soon enough, their food and drinks arrived. They ate and talked just like they did before. It was as if the years they stopped talking were nonexistent. The familiarity and ease in their conversations made Jamie’s heart swell up. Time slipped so quickly and before Jimin knew it, two hours had pass and the two were saying good-bye. Jimin said he had to go to a company meeting so Jamie decided to head back home. The warmth in Jamie’s stomach continued to make her flutter all the way back. She didn’t know why but the corners of perked up slightly without her knowing. Before she fell asleep, Jamie worked up the courage to text him.

To: Jimin Oppa

Thanks for today! Good night!~

From: Jimin Oppa

Good night Jimina

The next time she received a text from him was the day of her graduation. Her eyes lit up when she read his name across her phone screen. He had simply congratulated her and she sent her thanks as a reply. The following day, she received a bouquet of flowers at her front door. The gift was said to be anonymous, but she didn’t need to think too hard to figure it out. Only one person knew she liked yellow roses. She sent her thanks to him with a proof picture.

He didn’t bother to deny it.

Today, it was Jamie’s first day for her new job.

She had scored a position in the management department for a beauty-care company that she was interested in. Fortunately, the company’s corporate office was located closely to her hometown.

“Just breath Jimin,” a hushed muttering could be heard from the female, who was dressed in a pencil skirt and a white long-sleeved blouse, standing in front of the bathroom mirror.

It had already been a few hours into the her first day and she hadn’t messed up so far (Thank God, she sighed). After refreshing herself, she exited the bathroom and walked back to the cubicle assigned to her at the beginning of the day.

“Oh, Jimin-shi,” she looked up to face the owner of the voice. It was Jin, her supervisor, who looked and seemed to be quite young for the position but Jimin didn’t dare to comment on it. For all she knew, he could be super talented. “Tonight, we are having a dinner party to welcome the new recruits after work. You better come, okay?”

“Of course,” she politely smiled at her superior. It’s not like she had a choice, did she?

Just when Jin was about to turn and leave, he abruptly stops and slaps his hands together. “Wait, your last name is Park right?”

Jamie furrowed her eyebrows and nodded slowly, unable to figure out the reason behind such a question. So what if her last name was Park?

Instead of receiving an explanation, Jin simply grinned at her and said, “Just making sure! See you at the party; it's going to be great!”

Trust Jimin when she says she’s been to a party, but never did she feel this awkward. The point of the dinner party was to welcome the new recruits. So when she walked into the restaurant, she was expecting to see her colleagues, but instead finds all her seniors already having a round of beers at the dinner table. She was informed that all the other recruits couldn’t make it because of some issues. Now, all the attention was on her. Fortunately for her, she was able to escape the offers of alcohol under the pretense that she was cooking the meat on the stove so her hands were full- at least for now.

“Don’t worry, the marketing team will be joining us soon so you won’t be the only new meat here~” Jin said, probably hoping it would make her feel better. It did slightly.

Soon enough, after a few minutes, the front restaurant door rings and a large group flooded in. Jin motioned them to sit at the empty table near them. As the new group got themselves seated, Jamie diligently continued to flip the raw meats on the grill. Occasionally, she would sneak in a bite or two and made small talk with her co-workers next to her, but didn’t make it too long for them to give a chance to toast with her. Just when she thought she got a hang of her strategy, the tongs were taken from her grasp and an arm slightly pulled hers.

“Someone take Jimin-shi’s job! I want to introduce her to someone!” Jin dictated the people at the table before pulling the said girl away. He looked at her with such seriousness that slightly frightened her. “Even though we are from different departments, you must meet the head of the marketing department no matter what. He is just half as important as our own boss.”

Great another person to worry, she cried. Jamie allowed herself to be dragged by the handsome male. She quietly stood behind Jin as he greeted the Marketing department and excitedly asked where their manager was.

“He’s down at the table toasting. Is she the new recruit you were talking about?” she listens to the conversation Jin was having with a tall male, who had high cheekbones and slanted eyes. His voice was deep and the rhythm as he talked was weirdly soothing.

“Yeah she is! Namjoon, meet Jimin. Jimin, meet Namjoon. He’s the supervisor for the Marketing Department.”

She greeted him and introduced herself again for good measure. As she introduced herself, she heard a muffled giggle from Jin and noticed the slight grin forming on Namjoon’s lips. She was obviously missing something; the last thing she wanted was to be the of a joke.

“I’ll apologize beforehand for Jin’s behavior,” Namjoon offered as a form of comfort to ease her awkwardness-it didn’t work though.

She watched as Jin nudged the other, yelling at him for saying such an offensive assumption. Namjoon refuted him saying it was true but that fell onto deaf ears as Jin turned to get the man he was originally looking for. Jamie could only give understanding eyes to Namjoon as the male glanced her way and sighed in disbelief. With only the two of them, Jamie got to know a bit more about Namjoon. She found out that Jin and Namjoon have known each other since middle school. She also learned that Namjoon knows how to speak English, a skill he picked up from rapping and listening to hip pop during his high school years.

“I’ve captured the target!” Jin announced. Jamie’s questioning if he’s already drank too many beers. “Park Jimin meet Park Jimin.”

Jamie’s eyes widened in disbelief as she stared faced to faced with the person in front of her. The other doing the same as well.

The male’s black hair was combed back to create a more professional image. He wore a button up and slacks but he loosened the top button, allowing him to expose more skin near his neck. If Jamie didn’t recognized him straight away, she would admit to amnesia.

She decided to speak first.

“Oppa, you work here too?!”

The male let out an awkward chuckle. “Yeah it is. So this is the new job you were talking about?”

“Yeah this is...”

The two went silent as they stared at each other, not knowing whether to act calm or happy about this situation.
“Wait, you guys know each other?” Jin asked, switching back from being a spectator.

“We are actually childhood friends,” Jimin explained to them, awkwardly scratching the back of his head with a shy smile.

Namjoon only ‘oh’-ed in response while his best friend groaned beside him, “Just when I thought I could have fun teasing you two tonight!” He earned from a slap on the back from his friend, reminding him that one of the Jimins is his boss, not only his friend.

“Save that stuff outside of work,” Namjoon said.

Before the two Jimins could catch up with another, Namjoon drags Jimin back to the Marketing table while the girl followed Jin, who almost reluctantly went back to their department as well.

As Jamie sat back down, she took the tongs and resumed cooking before taking a sip of water in front of her.

Her heart was beating with excitement at the thought of working with him yet her mind keeps reminding her that this was just a job and he was her superior, even if he was from a different department.

There were too many thoughts and emotions.

She took her first shot for the night.

Her mind pushed the matter to the side to deal with for later.

Everyone finished eating and stayed to talk, but most importantly to drink. Even though Jimin was sitting at another table, Jamie could hear his sweet laughter among the others. She would occasionally glance over at his area, taking account of the number of females surrounding him, some even looking at him with affection. His popularity still remained the same she noted.

Before she knew it, she finished her second glass.

The third glass was emptied through the long toasting led by Jin to welcome the female.

Feeling the obvious effects of the alcohol, her face and body began to feel warm. A hiccup escaped causing a giggle to follow. She knew she didn’t have the best alcohol tolerance but she considers herself a job well done since she isn’t drunk yet.

Her table continued to drink, playing games to speed up the process since they had some beer left and time was ticking. Even though she played these games many times, she knew she wasn’t the best at it especially when she was tipsy already.

“Our newbie lost~ Jimina, drink up!” the overly ecstatic, drunk Jin announced, pushing the glass towards her. The acidic liquid met the brim of the container, looking as if it would spill if anyone blew at it. Without a single thought or even doubt, she grabbed the glass and chugged it down while the cheers of her co-workers’ voices drowned in the background. The burn from the liquid sliding down made her fingers grip at at the ends of her skirt. Once she finished the glass, she placed it down on the table and let out a hiss. To say was burning would be an understatement, this is definitely the last glass she’ll be taking tonight.

It looked as God answered her prayers as the party decided to end with the empty soju bottles replacing their full counterparts. She managed to walk out of the restaurant without tripping on her heels to her glee. Her conscious mind told her to stay back and greet everyone leaving. Slowly, the restaurant become empty and she was one of the few left.

“Jimin-shi,” she heard a voice call out- it was Namjoon, “will you be okay heading back home by yourself?”

“Don’t worry! I am a-oh-okay!~” she cheered, breaking out into a grin.

She was definitely not.

Jamie would wake up the next morning, beating herself up for her embarrassing behavior.

“It’s okay, I’ll walk her home. Just take that troublesome hyung home.” She felt an arm wrap around her, her back enveloped in familiar warmth. Her drunk self titled her head up and met the gaze of the man clouding her thoughts tonight.

“Thanks Jimina. I’ll see you tomorrow!” Namjoon said before quickly dragging the almost passed out Jin to the parking lot.

The pair watched the two males disappear into the night, leaving them under the single street light that lit up the dark street.

“I didn’t expect you to drink so much,” the male commented, breaking the heavy silence between them.

“I only drank four glasses though!~” she whined, her tinted lips pursed into a cute pout. She felt the body next to her vibrate as a chuckle filled the cold night air.

“Any more I probably would be carrying a knocked-out newbie,” he teased as they walked towards the parking lot, his arm still wrapped around her shoulder.

Without much trouble, Jimin was able to get the girl into his car and fastened the seat belt for her. As he leaned over to secure the seatbelt, he couldn’t help but smell the mixture of her vanilla perfume and the fumes of the barbeque but he kept that observation to himself (Jamie was too busy trying to remain calm). He scurried to the driver’s seat and opened the car’s engine. Jamie chose not to speak, allowing the radio music to engulf the silence in the car and taking the time to not so secretly stare at Jimin driving (in her defense, she was drunk).

“If you keep staring at me like that, I’m going to get holes on the side of my head,” Jimin laughed, taking small glances at her before resuming his focus on the road.

“Why are you always surrounded by females?”

The question came out of nowhere, even the girl was amazed by how brash her drunken self is. She would’ve apologized right away for such a question if she were more self-aware. Luckily, the latter took no offense and actually found the question to be quite amusing.

“That’s what I get for working at a cosmetic company isn’t it?”

She confirmed her stupidity once again. The silence then sat between them as the male drove and the female looked at the passing scenery outside. Before she knew it, her eyes started to feel heavy and sleep took over her willpower to stay awake.

“Jimina,” she heard a low voice call. Her body shook slightly at the gentle nudging. “Jimina, wake up. You’re home.”

Her eyes slightly opened, revealing the boss of the marketing department, also her childhood friend, staring at her with worry. Once he saw that she was awake, his lips perked a little.

“Come on, let’s get you on an actual bed.”

In her sleepy state, Jamie responded with a nod and outstretched her arms. “Carry me.”

The male had to take a second to process what the girl said, stifling his laughter at the childish demand. Jimin still carried her in the end. Jamie naturally wrapped her arms around his neck and allowed her head to rest on her upper arm. The male walked up to the step and managed to push the code for the front door. He tried his best to keep quiet, scared that they might wake up her parents. Seeing their only daughter drunk after her first day isn’t the best sight to see at the middle of the night Jimin thought. As he quietly walked to her bedroom, Jimin hears a small giggle from the female.

“What?”

The female continued to giggle and shake her head. “Isn’t it funny how we always end up meeting again?” They finally make it into Jamie’s room and he carefully set her down onto her bed. The female easily slipped off her heels, which laid messily on the ground. Her body melted in the comfort of her bed, while the male sat next to her at the edge. “It’s like we’re fated to be.”

For a moment, she thought she saw a glint of sadness in his eyes. But it was quickly replaced with a smile. Maybe she was too drunk and was seeing things.
“From the very beginning and down to our names, right?” he said, receiving a nod from the female. Jimin notices sleep taking over the female and decide to bid her goodnight.

“Thank you oppa,” Jamie said softly, not knowing if he heard her or not as his body disappears from her sight. She mumbles something very softly before allowing sleep to take over her body once again.

“I really missed you.”

Chapter 1: This is so good! Reading chapter one felt like it was a oneshot; it was already fulfilling—seemingly to have left it in an open ending—but turns out, it's a chaptered fic! I'm going to read forth. ^^;

Oh, before I forget, I think /hesitant/ could have been better used instead of /hesitate/ as used in the following contexts: in 'At first, he became stiff and hesitate' and 'Hesitate, Jimin decided now was the time to tell her.' Also, I think I spotted some missing articles and prepositions (a, in..) which are very easy to overlook while proofreading so it's understandable. ^^;; These don't interfere with your flow but just wanted to let you know. Anyway yeah, I'm gonna continue reading because the feels are just starting to dive in jasdjds
