Not asking again

Don't Let Me Go - an Addicted (Heroin) Fanfiction

The entire plane ride was a blur. It just took less than an hour for them to land.

Upon arriving at Shanghai, Weizhou and Jingyu said no goodbyes and have just parted their ways. Jingyu was in a hurry to the hospital and Weizhou was being fetched by his editor.

“Who was that guy with you?” Editor Meng asked upon seeing Jingyu’s figure walking away from them.

“Oh, he’s a ‘good’ friend of mine.” Weizhou replied.

Editor Meng just nodded although he does not know why. He knew Weizhou for years now and this was the first time Weizhou actually admitted to being friends with someone. Even he himself does not dare to call him to be friends with Weizhou. It’s not like he doesn’t want to. It’s just that Weizhou is always immersed in his work that he forget he’s also a human who need social life.

So for Editor Meng to hear that Weizhou actually has a friend, that was a first.

“Xu Weizhou, I know you needed to get some fresh air sometimes but that doesn’t mean you get to have a week all to yourself without meeting the quota.” Editor Meng scolded Weizhou upon returning to their office.

“What are you talking about?” Weizhou questioned Editor Meng and then handed his journal to him. “I haven’t officially submitted those but inside my journal are over 30 poems I wrote while I was in Taiwan. That makes about three weeks of my quota, right?”

Editor Meng browsed Weizhou’s journal and each flip of page makes Editor Meng’s jaw drop wider and wider. Because the entries in Weizhou’s journal are indeed concise poems that is written beautifully. Each words are perfectly conveyed and is strategically arranged.

Weizhou is truly a genius poet. If not of his skills in poetry, his publishing house will still be just another second class publishing house with a lot of crappy poet and authors. In Editor Meng’s eyes, Weizhou is truly the cream of the crop among his fellow poets.

“If I had known that you are going to produce such quality poems in just a week away from the office then I would have given you the whole month off!” Editor Meng exclaimed enough for the whole office to hear.

“I would have stayed longer in Taiwan if not for the deadline we are trying to meet.” Weizhou replied.

While it’s true that he just passed over thirty poems today, it does not mean that all of it will be chosen to the current project they are working on. If the theme accepts the mood of the poem Weizhou wrote, then most of it will be picked if not half of it. The rest of the poems will be shelved for future use.

“You’re right. We need to finalize the entries for the book. And then a week from now, the printing of the first batch will commence.” Editor Meng announced to the team.

“After this project, what are we going to take up?” Weizhou suddenly asked the team.

“I guess we’ll see after we determine if the current project will be a success or not.” Editor Meng said.

“It’s a Xu Weizhou poem book, how is it not going to be a success?” another member of the team proudly stated.

“We can’t always rely on Weizhou’s fame. I know you guys know how massively talented our Weizhou is, but we cannot say for sure if this book will make the top charts.” Editor Meng answered.

“It’s true.” Weizhou spoke. “I am merely another poet trying to be big in the poetry scene. It is still dependent on how well our book is going to be presented to the public. We’re a team here so let’s help each other out.”

“Err… Weizhou, since you are too eager to do your work today, do you have a suggestion after this current project?” Editor Meng asked.

“In fact Editor Meng, I do.” Weizhou started. “I am thinking about collaborating with photographers. Instead of using our very own photographers, why don’t we collaborate with a team of photographers who has an outstanding following and with our team’s poets to make perhaps… a magazine or coffee table book or something like that?”

“If we collaborate with them, don’t you think large amount of royalties from the sales of those project will go to them instead of us having the full income?” Editor Meng asked.

“Editor Meng, as you said earlier we can’t always rely on my current limelight to be able to go up the charts. Although I am quite famous among my peers but in the real world, no one really knows me. If we use other photographer’s name and put our name next to them, don’t you think we can gain more followers through that method? More followers means more sales. Although our very own income would be cut down due to royalties, what of it? If we can gain a lot of followers that’s more important, don’t you think?” Weizhou said.

Editor Meng contemplated for a while. Although what Xu Weizhou was proposing could somewhat help them boost more sales, If they are truly to collaborate with them, he could lose a margin of sales that could have been theirs and their very own team of photographers would have lesser jobs during the collaboration.

“What about our own team of photographers? What could they possibly do if ever this idea of yours take place?” Editor Meng asked.

“Well, they could document the whole process. And they could make a video presentation about it and play it during the launch of the project.” Weizhou suggested.

Weizhou’s idea sparked the interests of all his fellow officemates. And Editor Meng noticed that the entire office is really interested in the proposal so he asked the people in the meeting.

“Who among here has problem with Weizhou’s proposal? Just raise your hand.” Editor Meng asked.

And as expected there were not a single hand raised.

“I guess I’ll lose my job to you eventually Mr. Xu Weizhou if you keep coming up with these ideas.” Editor Meng said to Weizhou while smiling.

The last time Jingyu went to the hospital was when his dad had a surgery removing his appendix a few years ago. Although they would have their regular checkups, they did not need to go to the actual hospitals since they could just go to their local clinics.

It was still midday and Jingyu arrived an hour earlier but for some reason he’s just still standing outside the hospital. This would be a huge turning point in his life. He could have three options. First is to go inside the emergency room, and ask Nini if the baby was his. Second is to ask the doctors to check for paternity by drawing both his and Nini’s blood if there would be some aspects of his blood inside Nini. And third is to just walk away and just be ignorant about this matter.

He could choose the third option, but that was not who he was so even if the child is his, he would still not give Nini a chance.

Jingyu had enough of Nini. And even if Nini was involved in this car crash, it would not change a thing. In fact, it was her own carelessness in the first place and she would not be getting sympathy from him.

Jingyu would of course ask Nini first. That would be the most civil way of handling things with her. Nini could be manipulative if she ever wanted to and Jingyu knew that. But he know Nini too much that she can’t affect him anymore. Even if she straight up kneel in front of him he would not care as because it would only mean that she was scheming to get him back again. And Jingyu would not allow something like that. As he always repeat in his mind: “I had enough of her bull.”

“I’m the acting guardian of the patient Zhang Nini.” Jingyu said to the receptionist at the hospital.

“Oh, it’s Mr. Huang Jingyu.” Jingyu confirmed with his I.D. card and then the receptionist gave him the hospital room number.

As Jingyu entered the room, he saw a figure laying figure on the bed and she was looking at the door as if she has expected Jingyu to arrive. As what the paramedic told him earlier this morning, she was fine as no major injury has been sustained. She just had a few minor scratches from the crash which is very lucky for her.

“How was the baby?” Jingyu asked about the baby and not bothering to ask the girl about her own wellbeing first.

“It’s fine. And I’m also fine. Thanks for not asking.” Nini arrogantly sulked.

“I told you before, you and I, we are done. So I need not ask about you.” Jingyu said indifferently as if talking to a stranger.

“Well, you better start doing that again. You’re here to ask about the baby? Yes, it’s your child. Happy now?” Nini retorted.

“I can’t be so sure about that Nini. You were never that faithful to begin with. So I need to make sure that baby is mine. I’m submitting myself for paternity testing. If you decline, I don’t care. If you want for me to acknowledge that child then participate. I’m not asking again.” Jingyu said.

Zhang Nini stared at Jingyu as if she can’t believe what she’s hearing.
