Prologue

“Who’s he?”

I glanced up, staring at Tara with somber eyes. I had barely got any sleep last night, attempting to finish an entire presentation for economics before that witch of a professor, Mrs. Yun, had got the chance to call me out for my irresponsible actions in her hell of a class.

I looked at Tara, her silky hair fell into her face, strands simply let loose. She never tied her hair up, never tied it back, never braided it, never even bothered to clip it up either, despite the many times I told her to, she never attempted.

I followed her gaze towards the middle table, where most of the upperclassmen in my art class sat, laughing and joking about in their own little world. My eyes landed on the one man that had captured Tara’s attention, my eyes quirked a brow in surprise.

“Who? Him?” I asked, nodding my head towards the particular direction.

She nodded, a shy smile playing on her lips. “What’s his name?”

I sat up a bit straighter, yawning a bit. “That’s Zhang Yixing, but he goes by Lay. He’s a grade above us.”

“Lay.” She repeated softly, and I couldn’t help but form a smirk.

“Caught your fancy?” I asked, Tara doesn’t take this art class, but she came in since her chemistry course had ended a bit early.

“He’s cute.” She replied, resuming to glance at the said male.

I followed her gaze once again, staring at Lay.  He wasn’t exactly a head turner. In fact, you wouldn’t realize he’s attractive unless you got a proper look at him. Tall, nice facial structures, dark hair, and a nice build. However, other than those features, I couldn’t see Tara’s attraction towards him. He just seemed like your typical college guy. A bit too nerdy, if you asked me.

I was never attracted to the simple boys. They were too boring.

One month later

“I rather cannot accept this, Ms. Song.”

I swallowed hard, gripping the stack of papers in my hand. It hung heavily in the air. The weight of the papers felt heavy, like rocks. Hard cold rocks. I looked at the witch, giving her my best pleading eyes. “Mrs. Yun, you’d have to understand, my printer had broken down in the middle of the night.”

She shook her head, staring down at her fingers, her ugly ugly fingers. They reminded me of carrots. Really big, fat, ugly carrots. “You should’ve had this assignment done before hand. If it is not printed in color I cannot accept it. You would have to turn it in late, Ms. Song.”

I heaved a breath, solemnly nodding my head as I walked out of that hell hole. One week. One entire week of restless nights, simply putting all my effort into that project and she denied it entirely. Why? Because it wasn’t printed in color. Sixty-seven pages of paper and just because half of the powerpoint was not printed in color, she couldn’t accept it?

“Such a .” I muttered under my breath, plugging my headphones into my ear.

“Who’s a ?” Tara came to my view, her hair curled and cut short.

It was clipped today. Curls suited her quite well.

“Who else?” I rolled my eyes. “Honestly, I can’t stand that witch.”

Tara sent me a pitiful look as she swung an arm around my shoulder. “It’s okay, Neha. It’s just one bad grade.”

I sighed heavily as we walked out of the university. Students were wandering about as the weather was very nice out. It was just the awakening of Spring, my favorite season, too bad Mrs. Yun had already ruined my mood to enjoy the lovely weather.

“Are you heading to The Lips tonight?” Tara asked. “Reol said that Lay was going to be there. Do I look pretty enough for him to notice me today?”

I smiled at her, “He notices you, Tara, you just have to take the first step and initiate it.”

She huffed a sigh, “I know, but it's’ like, he’s not interested in me at all. Like, he even knows I like him. A lot, a lot.”

Tara hadn’t actually confessed to Lay, in fact she rarely ever spoke to him, simply admiring his presence from afar. But it was one night, weeks ago, where Tara, me and Mina, our best friend, were high off boredom. The topic of crushes came up, and Mina thought it to be funny to play matchmaker and help Tara score herself with Lay. However, even after Lay had learnt about the girl’s crush, he simply hadn’t reacted. Just a soft ‘lol that’s nice.’ which had caused Tara to shove her face into a pillow, screaming in embarrassment.

I couldn’t help but scoff at the male’s words, as if he had girls confess to him everyday. Arrogant.

I looked at Tara, my best friend was gorgeous, smart, and childish in many ways, but a cute way. How could he not like her? I was always envious of her, absolutely stunning. Girls like her don’t usually come around, and she tries a lot to get his attention yet he seems he could careless.

& I didn’t like that.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t go today Tara. I’m just too tired from economics, and I want to go home and rest.” I spoke as we walked towards the parking lot. “He’ll notice you soon. You just got to go there, and make sure to catch his gaze, a lot.”

She pursed her lips, “Why so?”

I stopped in front of my car, it was a Kia forte, a new one that my parents had brought me after I graduated, two years ago. I was a sophomore in university now, Seoul National University. The car always reminded me of the day I left my home from Daegu to come here. It was weird how fast time flies.

“People tend to think that mind reading is simply an utter myth.” I said, pulling out my keys. “They’re wrong. It’s real, alright. The key is to simply catch the eye’s gaze when they’re least expecting it.”
