Star in the Mist

“Woohyun, it’s been a while. How are you?” Dr. Yoo asked.
“I’m okay, thanks!”
“I heard that you got married. Congratulations!”
“Thank you!”
“What’s your reason for visiting today?” She asked, setting down her pen.

Woohyun pulled out a plastic bag that held the plastic stick inside.
He slid it across the table to Dr. Yoo.
She looked at it.

“What kind of test is that, and what does the lines represent?” Woohyun asked, anxiously waiting for the doctor to answer his questions.
Dr. Yoo looked at Woohyun with some questions in mind.

“Has your wife been feeling fatigue?”
“No.”
Woohyun quickly thought back to Hoya’s housewarming party.
“She actually felt sick the other day.”
“Nausea? Vomiting?”
Woohyun recalled last night.
“Yes.”
"How about eating? Is she eating less than before?"
"Yes."
Dr. Yoo smiled, sliding the bag back to Woohyun.
“What does it mean? Is it serious?” Woohyun asked.
“Woohyun, your wife is pregnant,” she said with a smile.

Woohyun’s heart dropped, in shocked.
“Pregnant?”
Dr. Yoo nodded her head.
“Your wife is experiencing what we call morning sickness. It usually occurs during the first or second months of the pregnancy,” she explained.
Woohyun tuned out the doctor, as she continued to explain to Woohyun what to expect.
He couldn't accept the news.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
Woohyun entered the house.
You laid on the couch, watching some drama on the TV, covered in a warm blanket.
Your eyes were heavy, and all you wanted to do was sleep.
As much as Woohyun wanted to ignore you, he just couldn’t.
He didn't have the heart to do that to you.

Woohyun stood in front of you, as your heavy eyes managed to look at him.
“Are you okay?” he asked, surprising you.
“Yes. Just a small cold,” you lied.
“If you need anything, let me know,” Woohyun said.
Before you could thank him, he walked upstairs.
What he didn't know was those words meant everything to you.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
A week passed, and your symptoms were slowly going away.
Woohyun kept quiet, and you kept to yourself.
The house became colder than before.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
“Are you okay?” Minho asked, as he noticed a pale look to your face.
“I’m fine,” you tried laughing it off.
“I don’t know. You don’t look so good. Are you sick?”
“Just a slight fever, but I’ll be okay,” you said.
“Are you sure?” Minho asked.
You smiled and nodded your head to assure him.

“Have you talked to him?” Minho asked, as you guys walked together to the café.
“….no,” you frowned.
“Why not?” Minho asked as he stopped.
You looked at him.
“I…I just couldn’t speak to him.”
“Yah! How long are you going to let this go on? He’s probably misunderstanding something this whole time.”
“I’m scared.”
“Don’t be. Do you need me to talk to him?”
“No, Minho,” you declined his help.
“Then, you have to tell him how you feel.”
Your eyes watered.
“I will."
Minho pulled you into a hug, seeing the tears forming.
“Everything’s going to be okay,” he said, as he rubbed your back.
“Thank you, Minho,” you mumbled.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
Snap. Snap. Snap.
Jihyun smiled, looking at the pictures.
“Thank you, ----------.”

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
“Feel better?" Minho asked, pulling away from the hug.
You wiped your tears, nodding your head.
Minho placed his hand on your forehead.
“You’re so hot. I think we should get you to the hospital,” Minho arched his brows in concern.
“No, I’ll be okay.”
You couldn’t afford to stay at the hospital for the night.
“No, you’re burning. It could be serious,” Minho tried to convince you.
“No, it’s really oh---.”
Your vision became blurry.
Before you could make out what Minho was saying, everything out.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
The only thing on his mind was you.
I wonder what she’s doing.
Woohyun thought, as he stared at the computer screen.
Just as he was about to pull out his phone to send you a text, there was a knock at the door.
“Come in,” Woohyun said, setting his phone aside.

His secretary bowed.
“Hello, Mr. Nam, you have a guest,” she said.
A part of Woohyun hoped it was you.

His secretary stepped aside, revealing his special guest.
Woohyun stood up from his seat.
“Jihyun.”

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
You slowly opened your eyes, looking at the ceiling.
Where am I?
You thought, as you looked around.
Minho sat on the stool next to the bed.
“--------.”
“Minho.”
“Let me call the nurse,” Minho said, leaving the room for a quick second.
Nurse?
You thought.
You looked around, realizing you were at the hospital.
I need to get home.
Just before you could take the IV needle out, the nurse and Minho walked in.
“I need to go home,” you told the nurse.
“I’m sorry, Miss. The doctor says that you need to spend the night. Your temperature is too high right now to let you go home.”
“I’ll be fine. My friend will take me home.”
“I understand, but this is the doctor’s order.”
You looked at Minho for help.
“--------, I think you should stay for the night.”

It took a few minutes to convince you.
“I can leave in the morning, right?” you asked the nurse again.
“I cannot guarantee, but most likely. We will see what the doctor says,” she said before walking out.

“---------, you need to stay for the night,” Minho said.
“What about Woohyun?”
“Did you want me to call him and let him know?”
“N-no, I don’t want him to worry,” you said.
“Here’s your phone,” Minho took your phone out of his pocket, “it’s your choice if you want to call him or not.”
He placed it on the table next to the bed.
“I’m going to get you some food. I’ll be back,” Minho said, leaving the room.

You clicked on Woohyun’s contact, staring at the number.
Before you knew it, your finger sild his name across, calling him.
You brought the phone up to your ear, listening to the ringing.
He's probably not going to pick up.

“Hello.”
Your heart dropped upon hearing the voice.
“The wife calling?”
Your eyes watered.
“Can I speak to Woohyun?” you asked.
“Hmmm, I don’t think he can come to the phone right now.”
“I’ll…call later.”
“Don’t. He’s going to be busy tonight.”
The call ended.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
You slowly dropped your arm down to your side.
He wouldn’t do that to me, would he?

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
“What are you doing?” Woohyun asked as he entered his office.
Jihyun looked over her shoulder.
“Nothing.”
Woohyun walked over to his desk.
“Don’t touch my phone,” he said, as he opened his phone to see who called.

-------?
He thought.

Jihyun looked at Woohyun’s finger about to swipe for a call.
“I wouldn’t call her if I were you.”
Woohyun looked at Jihyun, confused.
“She called that she would be staying out all night.”
Woohyun didn't believe her words, though a part of him felt it was the truth.
“That’s what she said on the call when I picked it up.”
“If you’re here just to bother me, then I suggest that you leave.”
“I have something to show you.”

Jihyun pulled a few pictures up from her gallery, handing her phone over to Woohyun.
Woohyun looked at the pictures carefully.
His brows gradually furrowed in anger and confusion.
“I saw her with that guy this afternoon. They were hugging and kissing in broad daylight,” Jihyun lied.
Woohyun looked at her, then he looked back at the pictures.
Woohyun recognized him.

“I’m sure she’s out with that guy,” Jihyun assumed, “that’s why she called.”
Woohyun handed her phone back.
“I'm busy. You should leave,” Woohyun said.
“You should be careful with her. I heard she has other plans.”
“Please leave,” Woohyun said sternly.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
You sat in bed, watching the TV, though your ears tuned it out.
Are they really together?
You wondered, as your eyes watered again.
Maybe, I should end everything now.

“Food’s here,” Minho smiled showing you the bag.
You managed to pull out a smile to cover your pain.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
“Thank you for everything, Minho,” you thanked him.
“What are friends for?” Minho asked as he cleaned up.
“You should go home. I’ll be fine here.”
“It’s okay. I’ll stay with you.”
“No, I’ve bothered you all day. I’m sure you’re tired. Go home and rest. I know that you work tomorrow.”
“Are you sure?” he asked.
“Yes. Please go home. I’ll be fine here.”
“Promise you will stay here tonight?”
“I promise I won’t leave,” you smiled.
“Call me if you need anything, alright?”
You nodded.
“Sleep well,” he smiled before leaving.
You waved to him as the door closed.

You looked out the window.
There weren’t any stars out tonight, only a bright moon shining in the sky.
What are you doing?

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
Woohyun looked at your name on his phone.
He wanted to call you, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it.
He looked at the time. It read 11:40PM/23:40.
He deeply sighed, grabbing his coat, leaving the office.

“Have a good night, Mr. Nam,” the security guard bowed.
“Thank you.”

Woohyun stepped out, noticing the bright moon.
There’s no stars tonight.
He thought.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
On his way home, he stopped by a food stand.
“What would you like, sir?”
Woohyun looked at the menu.
Tteokbokki.
He recalled the time you both met.

“Nam Woohyun?”
Woohyun looked away from the menu.

You’re the guy.
Woohyun remembered.

“You’re Nam Woohyun, right?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Minho, ---------‘s friend.”
Woohyun could careless; all he knew was Minho was the guy you were with.
“Friend? Or more than friends?”
“I’m her friend. We used to work together.”
“I see. If you’re here to ask me for permission, then tell her to talk to me directly. She don’t need to be sending people to me.”
Minho furrowed his brows in confusion thinking about the odd words Woohyun spoke.
He quickly brushed it aside.
“You know she’s at the hospital, right? Did she call you?”
“Why aren’t you there with her? If you’re not ready to be a dad, then why would you do that to her?” Woohyun raised his voice, as he felt furious that Minho was acting like he didn't know anything.
“A dad?” Minho was puzzled about everything.
“She didn’t tell you? She’s pregnant.”
Minho was taken back by the sudden news.
“Pregnant?”
“Don’t forget what you did to her.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but we do not have that kind of relationship. If you think that low of her, then I recommend you keeping your distance from her," Minho began as he felt heated by the words Woohyun spoke of you, "I’m just telling you that she’s at the hospital. You should head there because she needs you."
Just as Minho was about to walk away, he turned back to look at Woohyun, “If you weren’t her husband, I would have punched you, but out of respect, I won’t. She cares for you more than you know, to the fact that she wanted to go home to see you than stay at the hospital for her health,” Minho finished, walking away.

Woohyun thought about Minho's words.
His rage was now filled with concerned.
He ran to his car, driving as fast as he could to get to the hospital.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
“Is there a patient for Nam --------?” Woohyun asked as he got to the front desk.
“How are you related to the patient?”
“I’m her husband."
“She was actually just discharged.”
“Thank you.”

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
You sat on the bench, waiting for the bus.
You felt bad for lying to Minho, but you had to get home.
Your eyes were heavy, as you fought to keep them open.
The bus stopped in front of the station.
You paid for your fare and then picked a seat, leaning your head on the window.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
He's probably having fun with Jihyun.
You thought as a tear rolled down your cheek.
You looked out the window, looking down at the car parked next to the bus.
Your eyes widened when you saw who the person was.
Woohyun.
At the same time, Woohyun looked out, making eye contact with you.

You quickly looked away and changed seat.
You thought of the worst possible situation, and that was Jihyun sitting in the passenger seat.
You wiped your tears away with the back of your hand.

──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────
Getting off at the next stop, you slowly dragged your foot along the sidewalk.
It’s okay. Be strong.
You told yourself as tears streamed down your cheeks.
Your tears were running too quick for your hands to wipe them away.

Before you could take another step, Woohyun caught up to you, grabbing your arm.
