Leather Jacket

My Lovely Lee Byunghun

You went to school like any other day, trying not to replay last night's rejection incident with Kevin. As you were studying during the first few minutes of class your friend Dahni interrupted you:

“Minju, you’ve got to check this out."

Before you could even object, your friend pulled you to your feet and dragged you to the window where half of the class was pressed up against the glass, watching as a boy on a motorcycle zoomed onto the school grounds, his engine revving up loud enough for everyone to hear.

“Who is that?”

“Wow... He’s cool.”

“Is he a college student?”

The teacher looked terror-stricken, but that didn't mask the hint of never-before-seen affection in her bespectacled eyes. “The nerve of some boys…”

You saw it too. He wore a biker jacket, the school uniform peeping out from underneath, and had messy blond locks. You scoffed, amazed at his stupidity. He had just violated three school rules by his very presence: riding a motorcycle, having dyed hair, and not wearing the uniform properly.

The gym teacher appeared on the school grounds looking horrific; clenching a meter stick tightly in his caveman hands as he stormed towards the boy who had just parked his motorcycle at the school's entrance.

Many of the girls giggled as the new-comer got yelled at by the angry, red-faced gym teacher. Although you felt slightly bad for him, you couldn't help but find it a little funny.

“Alright everybody," your teacher interrupted. "Enough fun. Get back to your seats and start reviewing yesterday’s lesson. We’ll start a new one in fifteen minutes.”

Gradually the class pulled away from the windows and made their way back to their desks.

“Blond hair too,” your friend Danhi whispered to you with an amused tone. “tsk, tsk, he’s in so much trouble whoever he is.”

You didn’t think too much about the blond-haired trouble-maker. He got what was coming to him.

Finding the spot you left off before Danhi stole you away, you proceeded to review the material.

Your teacher was about to conclude the review time when a knock came at the door. She promptly answered and looked taken-aback.

“Principal Jung!” she cried. “Is there anything I can do for you…?”

“Yes you can, Ms. Choi,” replied the stout and important-looking man. “You have an addition to your class. A student who just came back from overseas. If you would please make him feel welcome... that would be splendid.”

“O-Of course! Come in…” She seemed to stutter on air as the blond hair boy walked through the door.

“Fighting!” bellowed the principal with a bright grin that you had never ever seen before – it looked almost suspicious.

The door shut quickly, rendering the class dead-silent. It was the biker guy. He was the new addition to your class.

“So, uh, what’s your... name?” The female teacher looked worried.

“Byunghun.” He gave her a weird look.

“Oh… Haha… Byunghun… you got that class? Well, that’s perfect that you’re one person – not that anyone is more than one person… [insert nervous laughter]”. Her expression suddenly turned serious. “We have exactly one spot left. Right over there.” She pointed to the available seat in the back next to he garbage can.

“Yeh… thank you.” With a small smile he made his way to the back of the class.

The class was silent and you could faintly hear the girls behind you whispering and giggling to themselves about how cute he looked up close, making plans to speak to him, among other things.

When lunch came you were dying to go outside. You and Dahni made immediate plans, and as you were packing your things you noticed that girls had already gathered around the new-comer’s desk, admiring and asking questions.

“Where’d you come from?”

“Is that your natural hair colour?”

The new-comer took all of the attention quite humbly to your surprise. But that didn’t change the fact he was a trouble-maker and probably an attention-seeker within, because for what other reason would someone dye their hair blond and ride a vehicle - strictly forbidden for high-schoolers - to school? You and Dahni took your lunches and headed out the back field.

As she nibbled on her sandwich, Danhi muttered something about receiving another love letter from some guy. The wind blew pleasantly, bringing life to the grass and trees, whose leaves rustled soothingly to your ears.

“Isn’t that nice though?” you questioned, sorely remembering your failed confession just yesterday.

“But it’s from the same guy!” she cried, exasperated. “The one I turned down last week! Ugh… he doesn’t give up does he?”

You couldn’t help but laugh. It was true, since the beginning of school there was one boy who kept professing his love to Danhi in all sorts of ways: emails, love letters, chocolate hearts, little notes, and even once to her face, but Danhi turned him down so hard he stopped appearing before her.

“Seriously? Maybe you should give him a chance…” you suggested.

She looked unimpressed. “Minju. You don’t get it do you? He’s too obsessed with me! Plus he’s a loser. Do you have any idea how humiliating it would be, not to mention tiresome?” She sighed before continuing her sandwich.

You considered her words as you unwrapped your lunch of fried chicken and rice (leftovers from yesterday). Well, that boy’s going to get another chance for sure… the upcoming ball... according to the events calendar (you were class president due more to your good work-ethic and marks so you had to know all the events and activity dates) there was going to be a ball in two week. And if that boy ever needed a chance to profess his love, that was it. You decided not to mention that to her just yet and instead talked about other things to pass the time.

-

Near the end of lunch you two went back inside, talking and laughing, only to be interrupted by a blond boy launched down the hallway who bumped harshly into Danhi’s shoulder.

She let out a small cry and grabbed her shoulder, tears welling up in her eyes. The boy looked horrified. It was the biker boy. Byunghun from your class.

“I am so sorry,“ he said, “those guys they-“

“DANHI! ARE YOU OKAY?!” interjected a deep booming voice from out of nowhere. Danhi’s tears stopped, replaced by a startled expression, for in came the boy who had been incessently professing his love to her for the past three years. He stopped in front of her and His laser-eyes went from Danhi’s shoulder to the blond boy.

“YOU!” He pointed an angry finger at the new-comer. “YOU DID THIS?”

“Jimbo…” Danhi murmured.

“N-N-No," Byunghun rasied his hands. "I didn’t mean to – do you see those idiots behind you? They –“

“I don’t want your excuses!” Jimbo bellowed and advanced with a heavy punch. Byunghun blocked it and threw a punch back that hit Jimbo right in the chest.

“Oh my god…” Byunghun gasped in horror as if he didn’t know he could do that. “I am so sorry… are you okay?”

Jimbo was all flames now. He sprung towards Byunghun and hit him square in the stomach.

“Ow - dammit!” Byunghun fell to his knees, clutching his stomach. “YAH! It wasn’t my fault! Those idiots pushed me!” He pointed to the six gangster-like guys howling with laughter.

A look of realization crossed Jimbo’s face. “Seriously?”

“Yeah!” Byunghun cried in disbelief. “Aish…”

Without hesitation, Jimbo marched over to them and demanded loudly: “Who pushed him?! Danhi wouldn’t have gotten hurt if that idiot wasn’t pushed in her way!”

“Me,” replied one big beefy boy. “Why? Looking for a fight?”

Before any sort of negotiation was made one guy shouted. “GET HIM!” and everyone began teaming up on Jimbo.

“AND GET HIM TOO!” cried another, pointing at Byunghun who was still trying recovering from the stomach punch earlier.

“Me?” Byunghun pointed to himself in bewilderment.

In seconds, there was six against two: Jimbo and Byunghun, back-to-back, surrounded by the gang of boys. A crowd had gathered to watch and were cheering for the boys in the centre. Punches were thrown, ears were pulled, and feet were stepped on.

“This is getting ridiculous,” you muttered disappointedly. The fight was unfair and the two boys were getting beaten to a pulp. Being class president, you didn't want to be seen getting involved in a fight although you felt the urge to jump in and stop them. It wasn’t until a guy lifted the blond boy into the air and was about to punch him straight in the face that you couldn't help yourself.

In a flash, you made it to the center, twisted the guy’s arm, and threw him over onto his back. Byunghun’s expression was priceless but you ignored him. You grabbed the collars of two guys who were kicking Jimbo as he huddled on the ground trying to protect himself, and threw them back. You elbowed one and threw over another, landing them on top of each other like pancakes.

Suddenly, something unexpected happened: your hair was yanked harshly, and you cried out in pain.

“You little b-“ the guy couldn’t finish his sentence for Byunghun threw the guy a kick right between his legs and sent him wreathing on the floor in excruciating pain.

“You okay?” you heard him ask.

Heart pounding, you turned back only to witness the face of the angry gym teacher.

“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!” he roared. In seconds he was joined by the buff male geography teacher, the physics teacher and the custodian as he brandished his mop.

The eight boys dropped their defenses and your heart fell.
