The Turtle

Nightfall

"Why are you here?" Jun Ki questioned as he leaned against the wall with his arms crossed, his eyes darting over at Kim Soo Chul. After dragging him away from the trouble scene he caused, the Fallen members had brought him inside the storage room. Sitting on a wooden chair with a rope tied around him, Soo Chul just calmly sat there with a smile on his face. A smile that Jun Ki wants to punch so badly. "What makes you think you have any right to walk in here?"

Soo Chul scoffed as he looked at them, his only family. His uncle, Lee Sung Jong and two cousins. "What's that motto that we used to say to one another?" He clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth for a few seconds before he smirked again. "Once a Fallen, always a Fallen." Soo Chul couldn't help but notice that one important person was missing from this little meeting. Only the important factors of Fallen would have a meeting like this. Considering that three out of the four main factors are here, Soo Chul looked at them. "Where is Hye Jung? Isn't she supposed to be here?"

"She won't be going anywhere near you," Ki Woo said earnestly. "After what you did to her mom? What made you think we will let you two in the same room?"

Soo Chul lets out a laugh. "You're funny. Are you worried about her being killed by me? Or I will be the next one dead on the middle of the streets?" He arched an eyebrow from the silence. "See? Hesitation."

Jun Ki narrowed his eyes at him. "Let's stop talking about her, could we?"

"Why?" Soo Chul asked as he tried to untie the tight knit from the ropes quietly behind his back. "She's a grown woman now. I think she can handle if someone is talking mean about her. She isn't fifteen anymore."

Leader Sung Jong hardened his eyes his one and only nephew. "You should mind your words if you want a ticket back into the gang."

"Back into the gang?" Ki Woo repeated with annoyance. "Boss, you can't possibly think that he's an option. He murdered someone! Do you really want to bring back someone like him into this gang? What kind of display will you hold against our other enemies? We'll be a complete joke!"

"Yeah?" Leader Sung Jong looked at his children. "The only difference that you three have is the fact that Soo Chul got convicted and spent time behind bars. As far as I can remember, you and Jun Ki murder people too - you just haven't been stupid enough to get caught like Soo Chul did."

Soo Chul nodded his head. "My uncle has always been the wise one." He smirked as he glared at them. "Explains why you and Hye Jung seem to think alike so much. Spending too much time in bed together?"

Jun Ki finally lost it. He immediately dashed in front of Soo Chul, punching him across the face - the same spot where Hye Jung had punched him earlier. "Stop talking about her!!"

Ki Woo grabbed his brother, slamming him against the wall. "Stop it! You know that's exactly what he wants!"

Leader Sung Jung took a deep breath as he held onto the cane tighter. "Untie him. Announce to the others that Soo Chul has returned for good."

"What?!" Jun Ki and Ki Woo said in unison.

"Dad - " Ki Woo stopped talking once he saw his father's facial expression at the word dad. "Boss, don't do this! It's crazy!"

"What did I just do? I ordered you guys to do something so do it. No questions asked." He turned around and opened the door, leaving the boys behind.

"No!" Ki Woo wouldn't give up. He followed behind his dad to find another way to convince a different situation.

Left alone in the storage room with Soo Chul, Jun Ki closed the door again. "You need to leave, refuse the offer of coming back into this family."

"Family?" Soo Chul scoffed at the word. "How ironic."

"Do you understand me?" Jun Ki sighed. "You can't be around Hye Jung, she is finally getting better. Anyone other than myself that can understand that would be you."

"That's funny." Soo Chul said. "I remember saying those exact words to you eight years ago." He glanced at Jun Ki and chuckled. "But I guess you won, right? You finally got her."

"She isn't some kind of toy that we can tag along. She's a human being." Jun Ki tried to rationalize.

"Yeah? Tell that to your dad. What? Is she still his sleeping buddy or not?"

Jun Ki has had enough. He kicked the wooden chair harshly, causing Soo Chulk to fall onto the floor. Without another word, he walked out of the storage room and looked over at the bar. "Rae Won!"

It took Ji Hong a few seconds to realize that he was being called. "Yeah?"

"Go untie him." Jun Ki ordered before walking downstairs toward the basement.

Ji Hong walked around the bar counter and slowly made his way to the storage room. His eyes narrowed at Soo Chul as he struggled with the ropes and the side of his face implanted on the floor. "Here, let me help you." Ji Hong pulled the chair up, untying the ropes off of the man right away. "This seems like a wonderful welcome for you."

"You get used to it." Soo Chul stood up and looked at Ji Hong. "Huh."

"Is there a problem?"

"No." Soo Chul shrugged his shoulders. "What's your name?"

"Kim Rae Won." Ji Hong said. "I joined Fallen almost a week ago."

Soo Chul scoffed as he took out a cigarette. "We usually never take people in." He lit the cigarette and narrowed his eyes at him. "What did you do?"

"What do you mean?"

"Did you save someone?" Soo Chul inhaled and exhaled the smoke from the cigarette. "Let me guess. You saved my uncle's life, didn't you?"

Ji Hong felt as if this was a test or some kind of brief interrogation that he's not prepared for. Despite being here for a while, none of the Fallen members had asked him about how or why he is here. For the first time, someone is actually testing his story and he can't believe it's someone like Kim Soo Chul. "He almost got hit on the middle of the street while walking, I pulled him away from the car."

Furrowing his eyebrows together at the story, Soo Chul made an expression that Ji Hong can't get a read on. "Car? Hm. Must've been a Saint."

"Are you - " before Ji Hong could get any of his questioning, Soo Chul just walked out of the storage room. Standing alone, Ji Hong couldn't help but be amused by the sudden appearance of someone new. Besides knowing that he is a convicted for a murder that he possibly didn't do, this Kim Soo Chul guy really does know how to get on people's nerves. Ji Hong darted his eyes over to where Hye Jung was walking by. Immediately following her quietly, he halted his steps once he saw her walk into Leader Sung Jong's private room. Carefully and slowly, he pressed record button on his recorder and listened onto the conversation.

"You can't possibly think that letting Kim Soo Chul in is the best option for us."

Leader Sung Jong laughed. "And she does speak." Ji Hong can make out the sound of fingers tapping against the table. "You don't say anything so I just assume what's best for the gang."

"What's best for the team?" Hye Jung repeated with disgust in her tone. "Are we talking about the same person here? This is Kim Soo Chul!"

"Yeah and he is my only nephew." Leader Sung Jong said quietly. "You can't give up on family."

Hye Jung didn't speak for a few seconds. "Family. How dare you use that word as a defense."

"I find it interesting that you barely speak a word in our meetings or when we're alone in a room like this, you tend to speak out more often." There was a chuckle. "Are you comfortable with me now? Or is it because we're nowhere in sight of the other members that you frankly want to speak of more like this? Where's that bravery when we're with the others?"

"When I find something displeasing, I'll speak up. Like the current situation we are in right now." Hye Jung argued.

"Current situation? There is no situation to be discussed or to be figured out."

"He killed my mom!" Hye Jung screamed.

The sound of a chair scraping against the floor was heard and footsteps following it. If Ji Hong could guess what was happening, it's Leader Sung Jong walking closer to Hye Jung. "I think we both know very well that Kim Soo Chul didn't murder your mom." And there it was. The evidence that Ji Hong needed to confirm his team's theory.

Before they find out that he was eavesdropping, Ji Hong rushed out of the hallway and back over to the bar counter. He ended the recording and picked up some glasses that needed to be dry. He glanced up as Hye Jung walked by, her eyes filled with anger and her hands clenching onto each other as if she wanted or needed to punch something badly.

"Rae Won," Pa Ran walked over and handed him a piece of paper that had some kind of list on it. "Ki Woo wants you to run some errands. You're lucky, being able to leave."

Ji Hong picked up the paper and furrowed his eyebrows together. It was a list of alcohol and snacks to buy. "This is how we sell our alcohols? By buying it at stores instead of making shipping orders?"

"Congratulations, your first hand knowledge of how the business works." Pa Ran exhaled deeply. "Whatever you're doing, keep it up. Usually it takes a couple months for other members being able to leave this place. Considering that Ki Woo had given you permission to buy our bar needs, you're moving on up quickly." He quickly grabbed another bottle of whiskey, Ji Hong narrowed his eyes at him. He swears that's his tenth bottle today. No wonder he needs to go out and buy so many alcohol. "You do know what this means, right?"

Ji Hong blinked his eyes. "What?"

"Before you know it, you finally get to work downstairs and see how the underground casino works." Pa Ran said.

Taking a deep breath, Ji Hong nodded his head. It's just what he needs, to go down there and get more information.

. . .

"If I kill him, what would you do for me?" Hye Jung looked up from her bad to see Ki Woo standing by the doorway with a smirk written on his face. "Come on, you know you want him dead. And you know as much as I do that I have no problem on killing someone."

Hye Jung exhaled while throwing the empty purse inside the closet. "You want him dead for your own benefit, not for me."

"Smart, I'll give you that." Ki Woo walked into the room and sat down. "You know if I tell Jun Ki to kill Soo Chul for you, he would do it."

"Shut up." Hye Jung said. She has had enough of both Ki Woo and Leader Sung Jong thinking they can do or say whatever they want. She chose to keep her silence to get away from trouble but with the appearance of Soo Chul again, nothing is worth it. "I'm sick of hearing your voice."

"Excuse me?!" Ki Woo stood up and stared at her in shock, this is the first time he has seen her so daringly test his anger like this. "What the hell did you just say to me?!" Ki Woo grabbed onto a handful of Hye Jung's hair, pulling it roughly as she screamed in pain.

With her knee still injured and her face still bruised and swollen from the beating she got by the Saint, Hye Jung really can't handle another beating like this. "Stop!!"

"Where is that daring mouth of yours now?! Who do you think you are?!" He pushed Hye Jung against the wall, his eyes glaring at her. "The only reason why you're alive is because of my idiot brother. I found out you two are dating just this week. You better watch it with me or I will go tell my dad. And knowing how much he favors you, I would hate to see what he is willing to do to Jun Ki."

"He wouldn't do anything," Hye Jung muttered. "Jun Ki's family."

Ki Woo scoffed. "Family? Did my dad give you that stupid family speech? I thought you were smart. Think about what your dad did to you. My dad would do the same thing in an instant." He snapped his fingers in front of her face to make Hye Jung flinch. "Just like that. Women in this line of business doesn't work out. Look around, Yoo Hye Jung. You're the only woman left because my father needs you. Once he's done, he moves onto the next."

Hye Jung clenched her fists as she glared at him. "He's your brother."

"A traitor more like it," Ki Woo said. "He's sleeping with the enemy's daughter."

"You know, this whole scenery can only give mixed signals." Jun Ki and Hye Jung turned their head to see Ji Hong. "Uhm, hi."

Ki Woo backed away from Hye Jung and narrowed his eyes at him. "I sent you out to buy supplies, what are you still doing here?"

"I don't know where half of these stuff are," Ji Hong held up the piece of paper. "I thought Hye Jung could help me out."

Hye Jung froze. "I'm not really allowed outside unless it's work or with Jun Ki."

Ki Woo sighed. "Just go with him."

She grabbed her jacket and walked out of her room and out of the yard. As soon as she was away from the area, she leaned against the wall and exhaled deeply. "Thanks."

Ji Hong shrugged his shoulders. "Thought you would like some fresh air."

"You must have a lot of questions." Hye Jung said softly as she walked along the side of the street.

He watched silently as she walked further away from him. There are more than a thousand questions in his head right now. Did she really murder her mom? Why would she do it? Did she purposely put Kim Soo Chul behind bars to hide her own crime? If she really did do it, is that why she is so wary and anxious about Soo Chul's return. Instead, he decided to walk side by side next to her and shrugged his shoulders. "Are you hungry?"

Hye Jung paused and knit her eyebrows together in confusion. Does he really have no questions about what just happened today? She smiled and nodded her head. "Yeah, I am. What do you want to eat?"

Ji Hong shrugged his shoulders. "Show me around, I really don't care."

. . .

Hye Jung sat on top of the cliff with a beer can in her hand as she stared at the stars. Being on top of a cliff makes the stars seems so close enough that it makes her feel as if she can reach and grab one.

"Have you ever named a star?" Ji Hong asked as he sat next to her.

"Name a star? We're allowed to do that?" Hye Jung asked.

Ji Hong chuckled as he took a sip of his beer. "Of course, it's just like how we name our pets certain names. We can name any stars."

"How do we know which one is ours?" Hye Jung asked.

"That's the fun part, we don't." Ji Hong laughed. "See a new one and name it different each time. It's like having a bunch of children but with no responsibilities."

Hye Jung laughed. "Alright." She glanced and stared at the biggest star she sees so far. "How about Bob?"

Ji Hong almost spit out his beer while laughing. "Why Bob?"

"I had a turtle named Bob once but...." She hesitated a bit as she squinted her eyes. "I had to leave him behind when my dad sold me off."

"Oh, I'm sorry. Was the turtle important?" Ji Hong asked.

Hye Jung exhaled as she finished off the third beer can. "My mom bought the turle for me as a kid. When I was little, I was mainly alone the whole time. My dad was either busy running the Saints and my mom was having one of her drug binge. The turtle was all I had, taking care of Bob was what gave me so much happiness."

"Are you unhappy now?"

She stared at the sky with a blank expression. "Sometimes."

"Even with Jun Ki by your side?" Ji Hong furrowed his eyebrows together.

"He makes me happy, really happy." Hye Jung looked at Ji Hong and shrugged her shoulders. "But do you ever have the feeling where you know how much that person cares and love for you? To the point of danger?"

Noting the type of tone in her voice, the mellow but wary sound caused Ji Hong to be on alert. "As if the person cares for you too much that he would do anything for you?"

She didn't answer right away. Hye Jung simply grabbed another beer can, opening it as she clenched her teeth. "Yeah."

"As in anything? Even," he stopped talking and clenched his hands together. Ji Hong didn't want to but this conversation is making him feel so suspicious. He pressed the record button again and prayed that she wouldn't answer to the next question he is about to ask. "Even murder?"

Hye Jung blinked her eyes several times as she took a long sip of the beer. Maybe she was already starting to be slightly buzzed but instead of keeping shut, she nodded her head. "Even murder."

Ji Hong took a deep breath. "Did he kill someone on your behalf?"

"I'm sleepy." Hye Jung said as she stood up and stretched her arms out. "Let's go back. The alcohol needs to be stacked up by morning." She checked the time on her watch. "It's already seven. We open in two hours."

He cleaned up the empty cans into a plastic bag and quietly watched as she walked down the cliff. Ji Hong couldn't believe that he's actually going to do this but he has enough evidence. It may not connect to the murders from the last two years but with Kim Soo Chul back and plenty confirmation from his recordings. He has to do his job at the end of the day. Taking out his phone, he quickly sent a text to Seo Woo.

. . .

Hearing her phone vibrate, Seo Woo suddenly woke up from her nap. Yawning as she checked the message, she knit her eyebrows together. "Guys!"

Kang Soo rubbed his eyes as he squinted at her. "What?"

"We have to get a warrant for an arrest."

Young Gook walked over with three cups of coffee in his hand. "For who? Yoo Hye Jung?"

"No," Seo Woo looked up. "Lee Jun Ki." She showed the text message to them. "By Detective Hong's order."

Get an arrest warrant for Lee Jun Ki, we're making the arrest today.

Chun Sung Im walked into the room, narrowing her eyes at them. "What's going on?"

. . .

"Hi, Hye Jung." Soo Chul smirked as she walked by.

She gripped the piece of paper in her hand as she glared at him. "Do you want to get hit again?"

"Where is this sudden bravery coming from?" Soo Chul questioned as he stood up. "The Hye Jung I remember is really shy and naive."

"It's been eight years, people change."

Soo Chul chuckled. "Guess what else changes people?" He arched an eyebrow and leaned in closer to her. "Wrong imprisonment."

"If it was wrong improvement, you deserved it."

"Wow, you would say anything in order to protect him." Soo Chul pointed over to Jun Ki, who was busy counting money before heading downstairs with it. "I think only five people here really knows the truth. My cousin killed your mom, how could you still be with him?"

Hye Jung looked at Soo Chul. "Come near me again, it'll be my fist across your face again."

"Do it." Soo Chul insisted. "Jun Ki would only dash over here and beat the crap out of me. I believe you and I both know that my uncle will defend my back before he will protect his own son."

"Is there a problem here?" Pa Ran walked over with a bag of chips in his arms. "Looks like Princess is about to hit Dark Knight."

Hye Jung took a deep breath. "I was on my way to see you."

Pa Ran stared at her with shock written all over his face. "Me? What's up?"

"I was cleaning and sticking the new alcohol. There are forty-five bottles missing, found them at the back of the building." She shook her head as she handed him the paper. "Leader says you have to pay those back."

"What?!" Pa Ran looked at the paper. "How am I supposed to pay all of this back?!"

Soo Chul scoffed. "Should've thought of that before you drank half of the stock."

"Why don't you shut up?" Pa Ran demanded. "Hye Jung, you know that this amount is like ten years worth of pay for me."

"I know," Hye Jung said. "That's why I told Leader that I will pay half on your behalf."

Pa Ran smiled as he pulled her into a hug. "I know that I love you the best for a reason."

Hye Jung looked over at the bar. "Where's Rae Won?"

"I don't know. He said that he had to get something quickly and he'll be back." Pa Ran said. "His shift starts in ten minutes."

"Tell him that I send my thanks." Hye Jung said.

Pa Ran looked at her. "For what?"

"Hm," she smiled and shrugged her shoulders. "Just say Bob." Without saying another word, she walked over to Jun Ki - whispering something to his ear before she headed toward the bedroom.

. . .

Jun Ki walked into the room and smiled. "I can't believe he actually got you another Bob."

"I'm as surprised as you." Hye Jung said as she smiled at the small tank. She woke up this morning after her nap to see a little tank with a turtle inside. "Isn't Bob cute?"

"Definitely." Jun Ki chuckled. "It feels really nice to see you smiling like this."

Hye Jung looked at him. "Let's go out for dinner tonight. Get away from this hell for a while."

"Sounds like a good plan."

"Ask Rae Won if he wants to come along."

Jun Ki nodded his head in agreement. "It's the first time you're willing to open like this after a short meeting."

"I don't know. He's really does seem trustworthy." Hye Jung squinted her eyes at Pa Ran rushing over. "What's wrong?"

"Cops!!!!" Pa Ran breathed heavily as he clenched onto the doorway.

Jun Ki sighed. "It must be another building check. Tell Leader and Ki Woo to come out."

Pa Ran glanced between the two. "They're not here to see Leader." His eyes stopped at Jun Ki. "They're here to see you."

"Me?" Hye Jung and Jun Ki immediately rushed out of the room and stopped at the middle of the bar. There were four strangers standing there with their IDs out. "Yes?"

"Lee Jun Ki?"

"That's me." Jun Ki out his hand around Hye Jung's waist, making sure she is behind him. "Is there a problem?"

"I'm Lieutanant Chun Sung Im, please put your hands behind your back."

"Wait? I'm getting arrested?! For what?" Jun Ki's eyes widened as he stepped back, refusing to let this happen.

"You are under the suspicion for murder." Holding up her ID, Jin Seo Woo sighed. "Please follow the order or we will have to use force."

"No! Where's the proof?!" Jun Ki screamed.

Hye Jung stepped forward. "You need to back off! There is no evidence that Jun Ki ever killed someone." She knew deep inside that it was a lie. As his job, he has probably killed people under Leader's orders.

"Yoo Hye Jung, please step back." Sung Im said.

"How - " she furrowed her eyebrows together. "How do you know my name?"

"What? You think sealing your file would hide who you are?" Sung Im questioned. "Let's not be stupid."

Young Gook glared at Sung Im. "We're here to make an arrest not to criticize someone."

"Look at these people, a bunch of low lives." Sung Im said. "They're nothing but just a bunch of starving gangsters. I'm surprised that not all of them are murderers."

Soo Chul and the others marched over, their eyes filled with anger. "Lady Cop, you better watch that mouth of yours. Shut it or I'll make you shut up."

"Are you threatening a cop? Kang Soo, arrest him too." Sung Im ordered.

"What?" Kang Soo asked.

"That's enough." Ji Hong walked into the bar and sighed deeply. His eyes scanned the Fallen member's faces. Most were relieved to see him but once they noticed his ID, their smiles faltered into anger. "Young Gook, Lee Jun Ki to the car for the arrest."

"Yes, Sir." Young Gook said as he walked over, taking Jun Ki by the arms. Putting a pair of handcuffs around his wrists, he started walking Jun Ki out of the building."

"You were a cop?!" Jun Ki screamed as he was pushed.

Hye Jung stared at Ji Hong, anger and disappointment written on her face. "Is your name even Rae Won?"

Ji Hong shook his head. "I'm sorry."

Sung Im glanced between them. "Don't be sorry, you were doing your job. Let's go, Ji Hong."

Hye Jung scoffed. "Ji Hong? That's your name?" With no hesitation, she rushed over and punched him across the face.

Within seconds, Seo Woo and Kang Soo grabbed her - putting handcuffs around her wrist. "Yoo Hye Jung, you're under arresting for assaulting a detective. Anything you say will - "

"I know my rights." Hye Jung interrupted. She glared at Ji Hong as she was being pulled away. "Was the turtle a gift of forgiveness?"

Ji Hong stared at her with apologetic eyes. "I'm really sorry."

"Save it. I was right about you." Hye Jung said. "You're going to regret this."

Chapter 12: I completely understand the situation at hand. As a writer as well, I especially know the feeling of losing interest in a story. Whatever is happening in your life right now, I hope you go through it well. Don't ever forget that there is a community here for you! I want you to know that you are incredibly kind-hearted as well as an amazing writer. I have never been so in love with a fanfic. All your writings—they bring me to tears, and that's not an exaggeration. I've read a good amount of fanfiction in my years, but never have I been emotionally tortured (in a good way, I mean) as I have when I was reading this one.
Thank you so much for letting me feel these things. I'm so happy to be able to read such a well-written fanfic. You are absolutelly amazing and I can't wait to finish your other projects.

Finally, as a last cry of desparation: can I write the next events? Of course, in a different story located in my account. I will credit you for the original concept as well as the inspiration, but I just need some closure, even if I just write it myself. It's like a fanfic of a fanfic (if that makes sense lol), and I just can't not write one for this particular story.
I understand if you don't grant me permission for this, and I will respect that decision. But anyhow, I do hope everything is well in your personal life, and I wish you luck for all your upbringings! <3

Don't worry, your situation is understandable.
Sometimes we go through difficult and stressful times in life but no matter never and stop doing what you enjoy.
Your story, as far as you write it is really good and has potential, maybe in the future if the inspiration comes you can continue it. Take a rest.
I will be patiently waiting for your next project.

Happy New Year writer. The inspiration will come the moment you less expect it, believe in yourself.
