Reasons to Their Curiousity

Shining Wings & Faerie Dust

It was approximately five minutes before midnight. The night sky displayed a full moon and a vastly glamorous number of stars that twinkled above the land of Fey. The night breeze was mildly chilly but bearable for the two Faerie’s hiding behind an oak tree that was planted near the Chamber of Knowledge.

Chan and Minghao had agreed to meet their curious hyung on the exact same spot where they had discussed hours ago. Though minutes have passed since 12am, the two had not seemed to catch the said Faerie in sight. “I wonder why Wonwoo hyung is taking so long.” Chan spoke in a worried tone, fiddling with his fingers in the process.

Minghao was crouched down, with his knees meeting his chest. He was currently observing a firefly that was hovering over a closed tulip. “Maybe he got held back. He does live with Jisoo hyung you know.” He replies, his eyes not leaving the glowing insect.

“It’s past midnight though… Soonyoung hyung doesn’t know I’m here… I kind of sneaked out when he was asleep.” The youngest bit his nails, a sudden feeling of nervousness rising in his gut.

The spring Faerie stood up and stretched his limbs. “Well, Seungkwan and Jihoon hyung knows I’m out, but I just told them I was going to visit a friend. They looked at me weirdly after though.”

Just about when the two were going to speak up and go back, they heard rustling of leaves and a figure emerged from the tall grass that surrounded the area. The youngest got startled and was about to shriek until he realized the figure was none other than his friend. “Hyung!!” Chan whined loudly, but Wonwoo pressed a finger on his lips and hushed him.

“Sorry. Jisoo wouldn’t let me go.” The eldest whispered loudly. “I had to wait for him to fall asleep and god knows how late he sleeps.”

“Alright, alright.” Chan dismissed his reason with a wave of his hand. “So what’s the plan?”

Wonwoo’s face was just blank. “We break in.” He said simply, eyes not even showing a hint of doubt over his so-called ‘plan’.

Minghao and Chan dropped their jaws at him, eyes gawking in shock. There were days Wonwoo would be out of it but today was seriously the day he lost it. “Are you insane?” Chan asked, his face still reading a bewildered expression.

Minghao, on the other hand, seemed even more horrified of the idea. “I almost set a book on fire in there and now you want me to break in? Hyung, is your brain still frozen?”

“Listen,” The eldest grabbed hold of their arms and pulled them forward, forming a circle to be able to whisper in a more audible volume. “There is a high chance that we may be able to finally learn the truth about the Seelie Court and why the heck my wings shone like a ray of spectrum. You guys need to trust me on this. Do you trust me?”

Chan and Minghao looked at each other and back to the elder. In all honesty, they did trust Wonwoo a lot. They were together ever since their designated pollen landed on the Seelie Court’s ground and has practically seen more than enough to really know what type of person he was. The elder may be a tad curious on things but he’s actually very wise and thinks things through before doing them… Well, most of the time.

The youngest in the group sighed in defeat. As much as he hated this plan, he was too curious on the Unseelie Court to back out… Plus, it seemed that Wonwoo was already resolute in finding out the truth on the Winter Court so he may as well go for it. “Okay fine.”

Minghao stared at Chan in a doubtful manner. “Really, Chan?”

“Minghao, come on.” Wonwoo encourages with an excited smile after Chan shrugs in reply.

The Spring Faerie didn’t like the plan one bit. He hated being around the Chamber of Knowledge, what more if he’s actually in there? What more than being inside by breaking in? He somehow manages to let out a small hiss at both of them but presses his lips into a tight line before speaking. “I hate both of you.” He slaps their arms lightly. “How are we going to do this?”

Wonwoo and Chan beamed at the bubble-gum haired Fey. “It’s simple,” The eldest slings his arms around their shoulders and whispered, “We just go in an open window.”

Chan seemed to get more and more anxious as the older told his plan. Somehow, he feels this was going to be a bad idea. “You plan to do that, how?

“We aren’t Warm Faerie’s for nothing you know. Jihoon taught me how to pick locks before.” Wonwoo explains grabbing his leaf bag to the front and bringing out a pair of sharp wooden pick locks.

“Hyung, are you sure this is legal?” Chan asks after looking around suspiciously.

“I’m pretty sure it isn’t.” Minghao added.

“It’s not.” Wonwoo concluded with a small shrug before flying off and going up to a window that wasn’t that far from the ground. “But it’s the only choice we have.”

Wonwoo was pretty much a natural at this since Jihoon was the one that taught him. Though, when the autumn faerie found the younger in front of their house, trying to unlock their front door and then cautiously telling him ‘it’s not what it looks like’, he found his explanation quite bizarre.

Apparently Jihoon always snuck in their house if he was looking for a place to hide from Seungkwan’s constant complaining and rants on everything he doesn’t like. Sometimes the pink-haired faerie even snuck in different houses if Wonwoo and Josh were home. By then, Wonwoo got curious on how he did it, so Jihoon taught him how to… Not that he ever used the skill it since that time. In all sense, he wasn’t very keen in picking locks.

He brought two wooden picks from his pouch and inserted one in between the lock of the window. Then he placed the other pick below where the other was and started fiddling until he could find the hinge. With a little more effort, a click got through his ears and although he didn’t show it, he was cheering inwardly.

He looked down to where the two were and smiled shyly. Minghao and Chan— who were watching the older practically do something illegal— stared dumbly at him. They’ve known each other for a long time, but they could have never imagined Wonwoo breaking into a house or building. “Hyung…” The youngest called out in a loud whisper, “Are you some kind of criminal mastermind?”

Wonwoo rolled his eyes at the latter, “Sprinkle some fairy dust on you and get up here. People might see us.”  He nagged and went through the opened window.

Minghao and Chan exchanged looks and nodded to each other. They flew inside and Minghao found himself regretting the idea. “Can I back out?”

“No.” Chan and Wonwoo whispered in unison as they looked around.

The chamber of knowledge wasn’t that much of a view from the outside, knowing it’s been here for hundreds of centuries already, but it was very neat and organized from the inside. The lights were out and the only thing that was illuminating the room was the small glowing stone that Wonwoo brought. “I knew I should have brought my moon stone.” Minghao grumbled in frustration.

“Shh.” Chan hushed, sticking close to the elder so he could look where he was going.

“Chan, where do they keep the archives?” Wonwoo asked lowly, bringing the moon stone to the younger so he could see his face.

“From what I know, it’s 2 floors from this one.”

The older nodded and waved the stone around to get a better view. They were walking through shelves of books that were stacked in order. “Minghao, keep up.”

They managed to travel up the floors without making any noise despite one faerie guard almost catching them from the floor before. The floor they were on was blocked by a pair of large wooden doors that had vines and leaves surrounding its corners.

“The archives.” Chan looked awestruck as he ran his hands through the leaves. “I’ve always wanted to go in here. Uncle Donghae didn’t let me though…”

Minghao looked to his back worriedly, scared that the guard they almost bumped into earlier was creeping behind them. “Only staffs and council members are allowed in there, right?” he turned back to the two when the coast was clear.

Chan nodded. “Yup. Uncle Donghae never spoke anything about it but that time I overheard him talk to the Seelie Queen.”

“What did he say?” Wonwoo asked, pulling out the wooden picks from earlier.

“Something about the Winter courts land and economy.”

Minghao raised a brow in question. “But I thought we only had a little information on their land?”

Chan held his chin and looked up with his brows scrunched together. “That’s what I was thinking too. I didn’t understand half of the things they were saying so I don’t remember how the whole convo went, but the Seelie Queen mentioned the archives.” He looked over to Wonwoo who seemed to be having a hard time picking the large door’s lock. “I’m not saying that the Seelie Queen is any way evil, it’s actually the opposite, but I feel like he’s hiding something.”

Wonwoo stopped for a moment and turned his head to the younger’s direction, giving him a questioning look. “What do you mean by that?”

Minghao also moved closer and gave him a doubtful expression. “Are you saying that the council of the Seelie Court knows something about the winter court that the other warm faeries don’t?”

“I’m not saying that there is, but I’m saying that there might be.” Chan replied and pursed his lips. “Why do you think I went along with this plan? I didn’t mind it at first but then Wonwoo hyung suddenly talked about it… So I got curious too.”

Wonwoo couldn’t help but blink multiple times while he stared at the younger. “You could have told me this sooner?” Chan replied with a shrug and a toothy smile. The eldest sighed in disbelief, “And here I thought you were just curious.” He looked over to the bubble-gum haired fairy, “How about you?”

Minghao rubbed the back of his neck and looked down. “I just wanted to know, actually...”

“So you don’t have any spectacular back story or something?” Chan questioned and Minghao just shook his head. The youngest scoffed, “Well that was anticlimactic.”

“Well sorry if I don’t have some amazing back story like you two!” The spring faerie pouted and crossed his arms.

Wonwoo rolled his eyes and put his attention back to the complicated locks. He fiddled around with the pick, a nervous sweat running down his face. “We should hurry.” Chan sounded tense and the older looked over and saw him biting his nails.

“The locks to these doors are a little complicated than others.” He tried reasoning out.

“Of course they are.” The three faeries tensed to the new but familiar voice. “The locks to these doors were made with faerie dust that came from the outskirts of our land. You can’t unlock it with just some measly wooden picks.” Donghae stood at the entrance of the room, just near where the stairs was.

The younger three looked at him with frightened eyes. “U-Uncle Donghae—” Chan wanted to explain.

Wonwoo put a hand on Chan’s shoulder, signaling him to stop. He stepped forward and put on a bold front. “Please Uncle Donghae, something happened to me earlier. My wings suddenly shone when I stepped over the winter court and I need to find out why.”

Donghae sighed in response, “I know. I heard from Jihoon.” He moved forward. “It’s forbidden to go in there and I won’t let you in.” Donghae gave them a stern look and they looked down to the ground, dejected. “But I know enough to give you the information you need.”

Wonwoo looked up and stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean?” The eldest asked, still not clearly grasping the situation.

The older faerie sighed again and paused before replying, “I’ll tell you why your wings shone.”
