Episode 01

The Grey (더 그레이)

Humans like to judge each other.

They judge each other

on what they wear,

on what they hear,

on what they look like.

They judge all that they have.

And also like to forgetthat they will one day be judged as well.

I hate summer.

Short sleeves are the bane of my existence.'

I roll up my sleeve and slap a band-aid onto the tattoo.

It's not much bigger than my fingernail, really.

But size makes no difference to the amount of staring.

Even though it's November now, I still keep a band-aid on.

Just in case.

"Yo! Move it!" I hear a voice yell out.

Scowling, I swear to myself as I grab my jacket.

On my way out, I throw the band-aid wrapper into the trash.

The house is empty and silent, dark and uninviting.

Mom's probably at work.

She leaves early in the mornings, comes back late at night.

She has the tattoo, too.

I don't remember anything about it.

Apparently, my dad was a tattoo artist, and he gave our whole family matching tattoos.

I don't know my dad.

Doesn't really change the fact that I don't really like him.

I slip on my shoes and walk out the door.

Baek's already outside, waiting.

"You made me wait 20 minutes. Again. Why do you have so much to do?"

I don't take the time to answer him.

"Not like makeup's gonna make much difference." I hear him mutter under his breath.

"Baek, are you a female?"

"No?"

"Then you don't get a say in this."

"Righttttttttt. 3 months till graduation, Jieun. Let's try not to be tardy for once in our lives."

"Not gonna happen."

"Why can't you be a normal human being and just agree with me?"

"..."

"Fine. I'm leaving without you tomorrow."

"Fine by me."

Baek turns away, pouting.

"You're no fun." He whines.

I shrug as I open the door to exit our apartment.

The cold air hits me like a slap on the face.

Shivering, I turn to Baekhyun and eye his hoodie.

He notices and mouths 'Not gonna happen,'.

"Fine." I growl and stomp ahead.

He laughs, pulls an extra jacket out of his bag, and throws it at me.

I refuse to let him see me smile, but I can already feel my lips tugging upwards.

Baek's a nice guy, and he's innocent.

Innocent as in he believes all the sci-fi books he reads.

"Eun, guess what! I was reading yesterday--"

"What a surprise." I comment dryly.

He ignores me.

"Remember I told you that France got rid of all The Greys in 1970?"

I think for a while.

"The Greys... As in the aliens you were obsessed with a few weeks back?"

Baek scowls. "They're not aliens, they're--"

"I know, I know, humans that have special powers," I wave him off.

Then, a question comes to mind.

"Why do they call them The Greys, anyway? Were their skin a different color or whatnot?"

"No, I explained this to you already! Greys have a black tattoo on their bodies that glow grey when they use their powers."

"Ohhhhh! That totally makes sense!"

Baek's eyes sparkle as he turns to me and squeals, "Really?"

"No. That's total BS. Tattoos don't turn grey. Powers, my ."

"Don't call it BS! Humans have powers too, called instincts! It's just that they're not as strong as The Grey!"

"Yeah. And my instincts are telling me that's BS."

"It's not BS!"

"Fine, fine. Let's say it's not BS. What about The Greys? What'd you want to tell me?"

"Oh, yeah! So it turns out that France didn't get rid of all of them, and one escaped to another country! I also heard there's a school full of Greys as well!"

"Fascinating."

"Right?!"

"No. You're too naive. It's just a story. A rumor."

"Rumors have a starting point. They have to be based off something!"

"Uh-huh. Is there evidence?"

"Well, no, but-"

"Pictures?"

"Well-"

"That's what I thought."

"Ugh. You're impossible."

I smirk. "I'll take that as a compliment."

Baekhyun's walking home with Suho today, so I'm all alone.

I take a 5000 won bill out of my pocket and stare hungrily at the waffle shop across the street.

I shouldn't do this.

I'm on a diet.

...

Screw the diet.

...

But it's unhealthy.

...

Where's the fun in healthy?

I have a miniature angel and devil arguing in my head.

The devil's stronger, obviously.

I grin and jog towards the waffle shop, when....

"Move!" A student in a strange uniform shouts as he barrels towards me.

"What?"

The guy behind him screeches at me. "Catch him!"

"Huh?"

"Catchhhhhh himmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!"

My instincts take over and I grab onto the student's wrist.

"Let go!" The student yells in my face.

I blink back at him.

"I said, let go... Huh?" His face scrunches up in confusion.

Well, you told me to let go, so, well...

I let go.

The man that was chasing the boy had caught up to us already, anyway.

The student turns to the man. "Teach."

"What. Let's talk in the car." The man grabs the student's ear and starts dragging him towards a car.

"Teach, wait! I just used it on her."

"Used what on her?"

"You know, that thing."

"Wha- Ohhhhhhhh."

"Yeah. I used it on her."

These people are weird.

I slowly back away and slip into the waffle shop.

 Eh, not my problem.

Y'know, I'm not a pig, unlike what Byun Baekhyun might say.

I only ate, like, 5 waffles.

I hum as I walk down the street.

Wait a minute, that's...

Suddenly, a car stops in front of me.

The doors open and the man I saw earlier drags me in.

I do the only normal thing to do in this situation.

I scream.

"Drive." The man tells the person in the front.

"No, wait, I need to take care of my mom, I can't die!"

The student grimaces. "We'll talk at the airport."

"The airport? You're going to sell my organs to, like, the mafia? No! My organs aren't healthy, you don't want them!"

The student and the man both ignore me.

The airport is pretty much empty.

The student and the man head towards a vending machine.

"Wh... What are you going to do with me?" I ask carefully.

The student grins. "We're going to sell your organs."

"Wait, what?"

"He's kidding." The teacher rolls his eyes.

"Oh."

Just then, a boy strides up to us and steps on the student's shadow.

"Yo!"

The boy kicks the shadow to the side, and the student falls down."

"Ow, that hurt!"

Oh, my god.

That boy....

"SO CUTE!" I squeal as I squeeze the boy's cheeks.

"Wait, wha? You crazy!" The boy looks down and steps on my shadow.

I don't really care what he does.

I continue fluffing up his hair.

"Wait, I used it! What?"

The teacher smiles. "Ignore."

"She's a Ignore?"

I blink. "I'm a Ignore?"

The teacher nods. "There's only one Ignore family and the power's passed down through blood. I guess you're one of them."

I open my mouth but no words come out.

The student rises to his feet and points at a trash can.

It floats in midair.

"That's Jungkook, who has Telekenisis and Memory Erasure. He used it on you earlier, but it didn't work."

I blink.

"That's Yoongi. Shadow control and Memory Copy. He can memorize anything."

The teacher turns to me.

"Now that formalities are over, let's see that tattoo of yours."
