Who's Chasing Who? (I)

Race You To Her Heart

RACE YOU TO HER HEART;
Chapter 11: Who's Chasing Who? (I)

Nayeon was so happy when she managed to see Dahyun again after school one day; it must be fate that she went to the school opposite of hers... They even lived in the same neighborhood!

Of course she took the chance to make friends with her.

And as the days pass, Nayeon found that she started to grow more fond of the younger girl. She liked the way Dahyun would playfully bicker with her, the way Dahyun would whine when Nayeon made fun of her... the way she always seem to be in a daze when Nayeon was with her.

Why was Dahyun always in a daze?
Must be her anemia... Nayeon assumed.

Ah, her anemia... Nayeon was always worried about Dahyun's health – what if she fainted somewhere alone? Nayeon wished that would never happen.

The older girl absolutely loves doting on Dahyun. She didn't know why at first– she had thought that she perhaps she must've really wanted a dongsaeng like Dahyun...

She did behave like a good older sister would though, she always looked out for Dahyun and tried to take good care of her. She even wanted to bring Dahyun to her favourite ice cream store, because she wanted to share the best things – the most delicious things – with her. (But the stupid store was somehow always closed when they went there.)

Nayeon also wanted to hang out more often with the younger girl. She found that she always had the urge to hug her. To pinch her cheeks– gosh Nayeon loved pinching Dahyun's cheeks. To hold her hand...

Then Dahyun started to appear constantly in Nayeon's mind.

And Nayeon couldn't help but start to question herself; did she really thought of Dahyun as a younger sister? Or was Dahyun something more to her?

In class, Nayeon was seated right next to her classroom's window. If she were to look out of her classroom window, she could actually have a clear view of Dahyun's school gate.

Then one fine day Nayeon – who randomly happened to be looking out of her classroom's window – noticed Dahyun standing by her school gate when she got off school. 'She must be waiting for someone...' Nayeon thought, rather amused that she could actually see the girl without her knowing.

Dahyun waited there almost everyday... And Nayeon started to get curious about who the younger girl was always waiting for.

Imagine her surprise when she came to the conclusion one day that the younger girl was actually waiting for her.

'Oh my God... This kid.' Nayeon thought. 'She could've just asked me what time my school ends... But she chose to wait there everyday to find out by herself... How silly... How... adorable.'

And Nayeon started to like Dahyun even more.

Nayeon cares a lot about her studies. She was the kind of student who couldn't afford anything less than an A.

Hence, Nayeon wouldn't risk the chance of missing out anything that her teacher said in class... But Nayeon started getting distracted in class.

She would glance out of the window during her classes in the later part of the day, just to see if she could catch Dahyun waiting there. She really enjoyed watching Dahyun from her classroom window once in awhile – especially when classes got too boring – but she enjoyed the feeling of knowing that Dahyun was waiting for her even more.

Nayeon soon noticed this boy who was always hanging around Dahyun. Jackson – or rather 'Mandu', as Dahyun liked to call him – was Dahyun's best friend. And Nayeon found that... She didn't like this 'Mandu' very much.

First if all, Nayeon already didn't like how Dahyun was super close with him, how they were always playful and touchy and comfortable together.

Nayeon was kinda pissed at how he had done something to make Dahyun chase after him one day outside the school gates...

What are they doing? Nayeon had thought, annoyed. Doesn't he know that Dahyun was anemic? How could that boy make her run after him?

Nayeon watched them run, disappearing from her sight when some trees blocked her view. She started to get worried when they didn't return... But after awhile they reappeared with the boy having to piggyback the anemic girl back to the gates because she obviously wasn't feeling well after running after him.

What the hell?

The older girl didn't know what she was more angry over... The fact that the boy had caused Dahyun's anemia to act up... Or the fact that Dahyun was on his back, with his arms on her thighs and her hands around his neck.

Was Nayeon jealous of him?

"Ahem Im Nayeon-ssi," the teacher suddenly called her.

"H-huh? Yes Mr Park?" Nayeon stuttered out.

"Just because you're one of the top students in class, doesn't mean you don't have to pay attention," he scolded her.

Some of her classmates snickered. "Y-yes... I'm sorry." She apologized, embarrassed.

"Now stop looking outside the window and pay attention in class, Miss Im."

And Nayeon tried her best not to look outside the window after that.

...

But of course she failed... Miserably. How could she not look when she was worried about the younger girl?

Then again... Part of Nayeon wanted to thank Jackson after that though... Because of his stupid actions, Nayeon got to see Dahyun dozing off cutely by the school gates.

Because of his stupid actions, Dahyun couldn't stay awake and had decided to cling onto Nayeon the whole way to the bus stop.

And most importantly, because of his stupid actions... Nayeon got to feel Dahyun sleeping on her shoulder for the first time, all snuggled up closely right next to her, as though Dahyun trusted Nayeon to protect her and to bring her home safely. As though Nayeon had made Dahyun felt... safe.

And for that entire time, Nayeon's heart fluttered.

She realised how she wanted to make Dahyun feel safe... She wanted Dahyun to trust her... to be next to her... Always.

Nayeon had leaned in after those thoughts – as though naturally – to place a kiss on the top of the sleeping girl's head... She didn't even realise her lips was touching Dahyun's head when it already did, and Nayeon quickly pulled away, surprised at her own actions.

Oh my God... She gasped to herself in realization. She definitely didn't just wanted Dahyun to be her younger sister.

Nope.

Nayeon realised that...

She was actually
in love with Dahyun.

-

Nayeon understands that the youth she has will not last forever. So she tries to cherish every moment of her youth, to make every bit of time worthwhile... To make sure everything she does is of some sort of value.

She always loved performing – singing and dancing on stage – so she joins the showchior.

She said yes to the teacher when she was handpicked to join the student council because she believes that having that title would enhance her portfolio in the future.

She wants to excel in everything she does so she gives her all in all that she does, be it in showchior, in her studies or in her other responsibilities.

And Nayeon really enjoys her youth.

That's why, when Nayeon found out that Dahyun – unlike her – couldn't do what she loves... Her heart ached.

She saw the way Dahyun would stare – longingly – at the other kids who could run about freely. The way Dahyun would look at them hopefully, probably imagining herself running along with them... Only to frown after they disappeared, as though being crushed by the cold reality of how she herself can no longer do that.

"Because my anemia got worse, my parents didn't allow me to run anymore." Dahyun told her once with a bitter smile. "My brother didn't support me either... And the school even kicked me off the team." Dahyun scoffed. "It must've been my mom's idea... Oh well maybe it's all destined. I just wished I didn't love running so much."

But Nayeon didn't believe so – that it was all 'destined' – she believe that one can forge their own destiny... Also, Dahyun's feet were definitely not made to 'sit by the bleachers'... She was made to sprint forward.

Nayeon wanted Dahyun to be able to live her life to the fullest too. She wanted Dahyun to be happy. So Nayeon encouraged the younger girl to start running again.

Little did she know she'd take back that encouragement when the girl fainted from practicing too hard.

"Listen Dahyun-ah, I care about you." She had told her. "So if running is going to make you pass out all the time then I'm sorry I ever encouraged you."

Dahyun avoided her gaze, and for a second there Nayeon actually felt bad. "But..." she heard Dahyun mumble out. "Don't you believe in me?"

"What?? Yes I do!" Nayeon replied without any hesitation. "Of course I do! You're so incredibly talented Dahyun-ah and I find it such a waste that you aren't doing what you love!" That was absolutely true... But Nayeon was torn between prioritizing Dahyun's health or Dahyun's happiness. "But I also don't want you to faint all the time... or worse... DIE FROM RUNNING!" Of course not, that would be Nayeon's worse nightmare. "But then again what if you look back and regret not even trying-"

"Then please do me a favour Nayeon unnie," Dahyun cut off her rambling with a small smile. "I'll be fine. So just please keep believing in me."

Nayeon remembered biting her lip, hesitating for a short moment. She gazed into Dahyun's eyes that had seemed so reassuring, so hopeful... And Nayeon didn't have the heart to not support all of her hopes and dreams. She decided then that she'd stand by Dahyun, even if the entire world disapproved of her passion.

Eventually the older girl breathed an, "Okay but..."

"But?" Dahyun asked.

"You better not die on me," Nayeon said.

You better not leave me,
Dahyun-ah.

-

Since she agreed to support the younger girl in pursuing her passion again, Nayeon thought that it was her responsibility to take even more care of Dahyun. She brought Dahyun to a clinic. She made sure to nag at her to take all her meals. She also made sure Dahyun took all her medication and that Dahyun doesn't go overboard in over exerting herself.

She was glad Dahyun lived in her neighborhood, because then Nayeon could see her even during the weekends sometimes, when Dahyun would jog near Nayeon's place.

"I'll jog with you, I... Um... need a break from all that studying," Nayeon would tell Dahyun. She thought that by doing so, she could watch over Dahyun in case anything bad were to happen.

"Annyeong Dahyun-ah! Wait up, let me jog with you, I need some exercise from sitting down all day."

"Ah, Dahyun-ah I'll come along with you. You'll probably run faster with me around anyway kekeke!"

Excuses.

Nayeon knew all those were just excuses. Nayeon doesn't even fancy running all that much. Apart from watching over the younger girl, she just really wanted to spend more time with Dahyun.

Then Dahyun won her first race when she finally got back on the track team.

Nayeon was so proud; she had wrapped Dahyun in a tight embrace because she couldn't contain her happiness.

Nayeon loved hugging Dahyun; it always gave her butterflies in her stomach.

She liked how she was the perfect height - just a little bit taller than Dahyun - to be able to comfortably wrap her arms around the younger girl's neck. "N-nayeon unnie..." she heard Dahyun breathed, probably stunned. And Nayeon couldn't help but feel a sort of warmth rise up inside her chest... Hearing Dahyun murmur her name like that.

"Of course I'm proud of you Dahyun-ah," Nayeon later whispered. "I'm soooo proud."

"Gee... t-thanks..." Dahyun stuttered out. And Nayeon was suddenly worried if she had went overboard with her hug. Was Dahyun uncomfortable? Nayeon quickly pulled away, going to move her hands to Dahyun's face to do what she always does best instead.

...

Pinching Dahyun's cheeks.

"Ow Nayeon unnie wh-"

"Aigooo you little champion I knew you could do it! Good job Dahyun-ah, good job!~" she teased in a cutesy voice.

"Ow unnie stop it!" Dahyun whined. And Nayeon smiled.

-

Nayeon wanted to buy Dahyun ice cream to celebrate. She knew how much the latter loves chocolate ice cream.

...

But to her dismay... The stupid ice cream cafe was closed again.

Dahyun ended up buying chocolate ice cream from the convenient store... For herself.

Nayeon gasped, "Yah, you went to buy ice cream without me?"

"Yeah, ice cream aren't for noobs you see," Dahyun mocked, sticking out her tongue.

Nayeon stood up, slipping her phone into her pocket, sighing. "Wow... talk about friendship."

Dahyun giggled at that, continuing to enjoy her icy cold treat.

The older girl looked at her, shaking her head. "Enjoying your ice cream?" She asked Dhayun - suddenly Nayeon had a cheeky plan...

Dahyun cluelessly nodded along happily.

"Tsk, look at you getting ice cream all over your mouth. What a child," Nayeon said, clicking her tongue.

"Huh? No I didn't? I don't feel any ice cream on my-" Dahyun was saying when Nayeon suddenly pushed the ice cream cone towards Dahyun's face, resulting in chocolate ice cream smeared all over the latter's mouth.

Got'cha.

Dahyun's jaw dropped. "Y-yah?! Nayeon unnie!" She screamed. She couldn't believe what Nayeon just did.

"Aish, so messy this child, and still you dared to call me a little kid..." Nayeon mocked while shaking her head in disdain.

"What?! But you were the one who did that to m-" and Nayeon repeated her prank again before Dahyun could even finish her sentence.

"Y-YAH... NAYEON UNNIE STOP IT! SERIOUSLY!"

Nayeon bursts into laughter. "Ahahahahaha! You have a chocolate beard now!" Which earned her a glare from Dahyun. "Aigooo so cute," Nayeon teased pinching Dahyun's cheek.

"Yah, it's not funny okay," the younger girl swatted at Nayeon's hand, showing an annoyed look. But it only made Nayeon laugh more. She reached for her phone in her pocket. Quickly, she took a picture of the younger girl.

"HAHAHAHA!" Nayeon continued laughing loudly, looking at the picture of Dahyun's shocked – chocolate bearded – face on her phone screen.

'Oh this picture is a keeper...'

"What the-... Nayeon unnie delete it, oh my God!" Dahyun screamed trying to snatch Nayeon's phone away.

"No!" Nayeon laughed, swiftly slipping her phone back into her pocket. "I'm keeping that forever! Ahahha!"

"Unnie!" Dahyun whined. She seemed genuinely upset now.
And Nayeon felt a little bad.

"Alright, alright... I'm sorry Miss Chocobeard, I'll stop," Nayeon said. The younger girl of course gasped at that, offended at the horrible nickname.

-

After playfully bickering with her for awhile, Dahyun finally was willing to stand still allowing Nayeon to wipe the chocolaty mess off her face.

Nayeon stepped closer to Dahyun, reaching a hand towards Dahyun's chin. "See, that's a good kid now. Stay still," she said, and Dahyun rolled her eyes. "I'm not a kid, unnie," Dahyun said.

Nayeon only smiled. She held Dahyun's chin with one hand as she leaned in, using her other hand to wipe a tissue gently across the younger girl's lips.

Nayeon found her heart fluttering nervously as she felt Dahyun staring at her... While she was staring at Dahyun's lips.

Her thumb later accidentally brushed against Dahyun's lips. And Nayeon's heart skipped a beat.

"There, all clean," Nayeon said softly, trying to compose herself as her eyes met Dahyun's.

Time seemed to have stopped for Nayeon as she froze for a moment, getting lost in Dahyun's dark brown orbs, with her hand still on Dahyun's face.

Suddenly she had the urge to kiss her...

Dahyun seemed to have froze too... She was the first to break eye contact though. "Y-yah... unnie are you done?" Dahyun had asked, eyes darting to the side.

Nayeon kept quiet for awhile before she noticed a slight blush on Dahyun's cheeks.

She let a small smirk creep up her face.
Did Dahyun...
Perhaps felt that strange atmosphere too?
Was Dahyun perhaps... Flustered?

...

How cute.

Nayeon inwardly smacked that smirk off her own face, changing into a innocent like grin instead. Yah, Im Nayeon...  What are you doing. Get your head out of the gutter! She scolded herself.

"Yeah," Nayeon said with a hint of nonchalance, as she pulled her hands away from Dahyun's face. She had better stop being like this– having this sort of thoughts... These stupid random thoughts she was having... It was getting too dangerous...

"Let's go," Nayeon then said while reaching for Dahyun's free hand.

Ah, but then again... it wasn't like she could control herself.

-

It was a week before the end of the school year when Nayeon found herself sitting in am empty field. It was Dahyun's usual self-practice spot and Nayeon would often accompany Dahyun while the younger girl practiced running there.

Dahyun would jog and sprint in the evening, while Nayeon would be busy – or rather, pretending to be busy – reading her biology textbook...

The sun would be already setting, and the sky would be covered in a burst of pink and orange... and Nayeon would find her eyes peeking past her book to admire Dahyun's silhouette when she ran.

While she was at it, she might as well admire Dahyun's pale flawless skin under the setting sun.

She openly gawked at Dahyun's toned calfs, when the younger girl's attention wasn't on her, which led down to her tiny ankles. Dahyun's legs weren't the longest... So it always amazed Nayeon how the younger girl could run so quickly.

There was also Dahyun's cute – yah Im Nayeon stop being a ert!

...

When Dahyun came running over, Nayeon would quickly go back to concentrating on her book.

"I see you're working hard, unnie." She heard Dahyun say.

Without looking at Dahyun, Nayeon handed a bottle of water to the younger girl. "Well, you're pretty hardworking too, drink up."

"Thanks," Dahyun said, taking the bottle from Nayeon. "I guess we're both hardworking... only at different things."

Nayeon giggled softly. "Perhaps so."
Oh if only you knew...

Dahyun gulped down some water before she decided to plop her head down on Nayeon's lap. "Ah, I'm tired," she breathed.

Nayeon tried not to blush as she saw Dahyun smile blissfully, with her eyes closed, laying her head comfortably on Nayeon's lap.

She soon noticed the strands of hair stuck to Dahyun's face and neck, and she found the urge reach for the younger girl's neck to gently tuck those strands away. But she refrained herself...
Don't you dare do anything weird Im Nayeon...
Control your hands Im Nayeon...
Yah Im Nayeon... j-just... stop staring!

Her eyes later manage to catch a bead of sweat trickling down Dahyun's neck... towards her collarbone... into her shirt... and Nayeon gulped.

Hot.

Nayeon really didn't want to admit it – didn't want to think about it even – but Dahyun looked hot after she ran. That's right, the younger girl was indeed growing up well.

"Ew you stink," Nayeon said in a playful manner to distract herself, in case she started to have any inappropriate thoughts.

"Huh? I do?" Dahyun said surprised. She immediatlely sat back up to sniff at her own shirt.

"Just kidding," Nayeon said with a smirk.

Dahyun rolled her eyes at the older girl, throwing her sweaty towel at her.

Nayeon laughed, "hahaha ew don't throw your sweaty towel at me!"

"Yah, you are the one who stinks Nayeon unnie!" Dahyun huffed as she tried to stand up.

Oh no, did I make her mad?

At that, Nayeon swiftly pulled Dahyun back down. "Hey, come back here silly," she said as she tugged at Dahyun's hand. "You smell great okay, you could be compared to flowers." She heard Dahyun giggled at her exaggerated statement, and Nayeon's heart raced.

She loved hearing Dahyun laugh.

The younger girl rolled her eyes again as she sat back down next to Nayeon. But Nayeon motioned for Dahyun to lie back down on her lap instead, and Dahyun complied. She then took the water bottle back from Dahyun's hand, drinking directly from it.

Nayeon couldn't help but get butterflies in her stomach when she thought about how Dahyun's very own pair of lips were just on the same bottle a few seconds ago.

She wished she could capture those lips with her own instead.

Hm... But even if I can't kiss her... An indirect kiss like that isn't so bad too. She secretly thought.

Yah seriously Im Nayeon! Stop thinking about things like that! She inwardly scolded herself.

When she was done drinking, she noticed from the corner of her eye how Dahyun was staring at her.

Once again, she fought the urge to blush. Nayeon didn't dare to look at Dahyun after having those thoughts.

This girl... Why is she staring at me like that?

"I have something for you," Nayeon told Dahyun, while clearing . She tried her best not to stutter.

She pulled out two small slips of paper from her biology text book and Dahyun looked at them curiously.

"Um... It's my first official performance showcase to the public," Nayeon had said as she handed Dahyun two tickets. "Here, you can uh... bring along a friend if you want? Anyway, I really hope you can come."

She watched as Dahyun sat up again, looking at the tickets in her hand with curiosity and wonder. Then Dahyun looked at Nayeon with a grin.

"Sure, I'd love to watch you sing, Nayeon unnie."

And Nayeon couldn't help but match the smile on Dahyun's face.

-

Dahyun actually made it to Nayeon's recital. And the older girl was absolutely thrilled.

"You made it, Dahyun-ah," Nayeon let out after tugging a strand of hair behind the younger girl's ear. Dahyun was beautiful in a white dress. Oh and was that make up she had on? Pretty... Dahyun is actually really pretty when she dolls up like that.

Dahyun chuckled shyly, "Of course," she chirped with a sense of pride, "it's the great vocalist, Im Nayeon's recital, I wouldn't miss it for the world."

Dahyun was even sweet enough to bring Nayeon a flower.

Nayeon had accepted it with a grin plastered on her face. "Aw... thank you Dahyu-" only to notice how Dahyun's hand was wrapped up oddly. "Your hand..." Nayeon said reaching for Dahyun's hand. "It's hurt?"

Of course she had to take care of Dahyun's wound. She dragged Dahyun to the convenient store nearby to get band aids and antiseptic cream despite the younger girl's protest. She didn't even care if she would miss the bus (that she was suppose to take with the rest of the showchior members) back to school. 'That's even better actually,' part of her thought. That way she'd be able to take the bus home with Dahyun instead... right?

But oh she had forgotten one thing; she had given Dahyun two tickets to her show... And Dahyun had brought Jackson along.

Of course Dahyun would bring him... Why didn't Nayeon think of that?

Nayeon wanted to laugh when she heard about how Dahyun had forgotten about Jackson because of her.

"You ditched me." He deadpanned and Nayeon couldn't help but scoff secretly beside Dahyun.

"Sorry, there was..." Dahyun eyes darted to Nayeon then to the entrance of the bustling hall, "too many people and it made me dizzy so I forgot I had to wait for you," Dahyun apologized.

Nayeon felt a smile creep up her face, 'Aw how cute, Dahyun coming up with excuses and all because of me.' She thought.

"I'll buy you a drink in school, so forgive me pwease Mandu!" Dahyun tried with aegyo (behaving in a cute way)... That was something Nayeon seldom saw. In fact, aegyo was seldom associated with Dahyun. But there she was... using aegyo on Jackson.

Nayeon admitted she felt sour about that... She was jealous alright. She wanted Dahyun to use aegyo on her too. She wanted Dahyun to use aegyo only on her.

"Fine," Jackson sighed. He sure seemed satisfied with Dahyun's aegyo. How lucky for him... "But don't do it again." He then shifted his gaze to the older girl beside them. "Hi," he decided to greet Nayeon with a smile.

"Ah, yes. Nayeon unnie, this is Jackson. And Jackson this is Nayeon unnie," Dahyun introduced.

"Hi, Jackson-ssi," Nayeon nodded at him, trying to seem as cold as possible without coming off as impolite.

"A pleasure to meet you Nayeon noona, you were amazing tonight," Jackson complimented with a wink.

"Ah, thanks..." Nayeon replied.

Ew... Don't wink at me please.

"Hey Nayeon unnie, don't you-" Dahyun started before she got cut off.

"YAH! IM NAYEON!" A loud familiar voice echoed suddenly through the night.

Ah... That Park Jihyo, seriously her voice was so loud. It made Dahyun's eyes widened, while Jackson jumped a little, startled by the sound.

"Ah, Jihyo," Nayeon greeted.

"Where have you been?" Jihyo scolded her, in her usual bossy tone. "Everyone is looking for you! We're about to leave without you, you know?!"

"Oh I had to do something," Nayeon said, glancing at Dahyun with a small grin, "But I'm back so let's go?"

Jihyo was about to walk away, after sighing rather exasperatedly, when she noticed Dahyun. "Oh, it's you," she deadpaned. And Nayeon fought the urge to glare at Jihyo for using that tone on her adorably innocent little Dahyun.

How dared she.

Nayeon saw Dahyun wave at Jihyo awkwardly... As though a little bit intimidated. "H-hi?"

"Ah, you guys know each other?" Nayeon asked.

"No, but this lost girl was looking for you backstage," Jihyo said a hint of nonchalance evident in her voice. Nayeon looked at Dahyun as though asking if what Jihyo had said was true, and Dahyun nodded. "Anyway let's hurry up and go, the bus is leaving soon," Jihyo said, annoyed, before hurriedly walking away.

"I'll see you soon then, Dahyun-ah," Nayeon said, going to pinch Dahyun's cheek. She took a mental note to ask Dahyun about looking for her backstage next time. "Thanks for coming to the show." Nayeon then moved in closer, "Oh yeah, by the way," she whispered, cupping a hand by Dahyun's ear, "you look really pretty tonight."

What? She couldn't help it.
After all, it wasn't everyday that the love of your life, who happened to be a middle schooler, would appear at your recital wearing a pretty dress, and having make-up on. Of course Nayeon had to compliment her before leaving.

Then she jogged away, running after the annoyed Jihyo.

-

"Thanks for coming to look for me Jisoo," Nayeon told Jihyo when they were in the bus.  Even though it was obvious that the latter and her weren't on the best terms, she did still kinda appreciated Jihyo not just leaving with the rest of the showchior on the bus without her.

Jihyo only glared at Nayeon. "Well someone had to go get you, or else we'd have to waste our time and come back here to pick you up again when we got back to school and realised we had left a student behind..." She said coldly. "And could you stop calling me that."

Nayeon wanted to scoff, Jihyo was still so stubborn. She just wouldn't admit that she actually cared – even if it was only a little bit – about Nayeon's well-being. But of course Nayeon knew. They used to be good friends after all.

"I'll stop calling you Jisoo when I feel like it." Nayeon said. She secretly just enjoyed annoying Jihyo. "Also, I would appreciate it if you could stop using that stupid tone of yours... especially on my friend."

Jihyo rolled her eyes, "I'll use whatever tone I want to."

And Nayeon let a scoff escape her lips. "Rude..." She muttered quietly, looking away.

And they two girls ignored each other's presence the rest of the bus ride back to school.
