appearance  » lan has natural dark brown hair, almost to the point of black, but she tends to dye it a lighter caramel color simply because she thinks it looks better on her than her own natural hair color. her hair length is the same as in the picture, right to her bone, and she has chocolate brown irises. she stands at 155 cm and weighs a little less than 100 pounds despite her trying to gain weight through food or muscle - she's naturally petite. she has normal ear piercings, in which she prefers studs, and a couple of scars on her knees from a fall while running in the streets of china when she was younger.

style  » preferring a comfortable style, it doesn't matter to lan what she wears as long as she's comfy and warm. one day, she could be wearing a sporty outfit and the next, she'd be wearing a simple skirt and blouse. but somehow, no matter how she dresses, she always tends to have a bit of a tomboyish flare to her. she doesn't understand it, but she just goes along with it, surprising everyone she knows whenever she decides to wear a cute dress randomly.

don't cry wolf until you have seen the sheep shed its clothing

personality traits  »  straightforward, friendly, perceptive, dependable, a bit misguided, strong-hearted or stubborn, realist yet slightly gullible

personality  »  being new to sooman high and having the last name 'zhang,' everybody assumed lan was just a mirrored copy of zhang yixing of the exo crew with his spacey yet polite demeanor. however, once they meet her and actually get to know her, she's not exactly like the popular 'lay' everybody had come to know. if there was one word to describe zhang lan, it would be straightforward. she has no qualms about keeping her opinions hidden, and she has no problems displaying any of her emotions to anybody around her. she wears her heart on her sleeve and is actually quite proud of it since she finds no use in hiding her emotions when they're all just going to come bursting out one day. besides this though, she can give off the presence of being shy and reserved, simply because she's in a brand new school in a brand new country trying to converse in a brand new language she's still trying to get the hang of. but she doesn't let that stop her from trying to befriend somebody and fit in.

she's extremely friendly and easy to get along with once she opens up and sees that the other person she's conversing with is making an effort to be her friend as well. she sees it as a genuine effort to get to know her, and she treasures that friendship just a little bit more. she's perceptive of others' feelings and has a keen sense of mind to decrypt it (being similar to yixing like that). it shows that they care, and she doesn't hesitate to show she cares back in the way she goes the extra step to help that person or gets something that she knows they'll love. she's dependable for others, and she knows it, making sure to keep up that image and follow through for others when they expect something of her. along with this, she's observant to the small details and takes note of things she finds odd, weird, or just plain interesting and makes sure to use it to her advantage if she could.

however, with the way she's extremely friendly and will go the extra step for some people, others have seen her ways of actions as a type of flirting, which could be true. with how she acts, she naturally likes touching others because she's read from books that it  invokes a stronger connection with them. it's gotten her in awkward situations since most koreans aren't too welcoming to such sudden open touches, but she tries and just smiles or laughs the awkward tension away. she may be a bit misguided in her efforts, especially when they see how devoted she is to her friends and looks like she may like one more than most, but she hopes her real intentions shine through in the end.

she's strong in a mental sense and knows when she's right about a certain topic or action. she doesn't back down and can hold her own, but it makes it difficult for her to admit whatever she did was wrong. being an only child has given her some of the typical traits of an only child. she hates being wrong and will argue her way into admitting at least some part of her statement was right.
she's also a realist. she sees truth and lives off of logic. if something has been proven real with backup facts and successful experiments, then she'd believe it too. but just like this, she could be gullible as well if the other person sounds confident enough in what he/she is saying and provides one or two great sources for whatever he/she is saying. it's not something she's proud of and would question the other person over and over again if she senses any form of doubt and false information.

our past does not define who we are

background  »  lan was born as the only child to jin and min, both of whom have only lived in beijing their whole lives. lan's father works as an electronics manufacturer and has worked his way up since he was a very young man, knowing most of what there is to know about anything electronic. because of this, he has managed to land himself a job with one of the hi-tech companies and started earning a larger income to support his family. lan's mother on the other hand works as a retail salesperson in the closest mall, earning an average wage to help support her family as well. it was basically because of these two professions, as well as a promotion in her father's job, that allowed them to eventually move to south korea so lan could possibly broaden her experience in two languages and find a better job for herself (her father knowing she wasn't really into electronics and her mother wanting her to earn more than her when the time came) as well as go to the home of samsung electronics.

unfortunately for lan though, her parents decided to move after her first year of high school in beijing, so she had to leave the friends she already made, learn and remember all the korean she taught herself as well as with an extra class in the language, and try to make different friends in a foreign country. she wouldn't say she was bullied or anything like that when she first arrived, but more so just completely lost on where everything was located. she kept to herself the summer before school since she was trying to learn where everything was in seoul and only met her closest new friend junghwan when school started up, thinking he was friendly and asking him in broken korean where something was. she ended up getting lost and meeting lu han from the men's soccer club but managed to earn herself a new friend when junghwan came up to her later that day asking if she was okay and found where she was going. she just nodded, confused, but slowly started to get better and better at korean with her endless study of the subject.

family  »

father | zhang, jin | 46 | electronics manufacturer with samsung | awkward, caring, has a good sense of humor | they have an amusing relationship because the man she calls her father is just plain awkward and funny. she never knows what he's going to say or do, so sometimes the weird tension in the room is clearly palpable until she snaps and asks what's going on. they mostly bond over soccer since she has no interests in extensively learning electronics, and she knows she can always go to him if she has problems with her technology or the new country.
mother | shi, min | 45 | retail salesperson | stern, pushy, yet caring | their relationship is barely better than her relationship with her father. even though lan has an amusing relationship with her father, it's more of a genuine relationship between her and her mother. they have the more serious talks and she's the one who encourages lan to get better grades each time while her father makes sure lan's just doing well in the new environment.

friends/rivals  »

best friend | lee, junghwan (sandeul, b1a4) | 17 | sophomore year student | dorky, funny, openly caring, mischievous | junghwan and lan have become the best of friends ever since she moved to seoul a year and a half ago. they're able to go to each other about most things, and she tends to ask him a bunch of questions about the korean culture or language. they're like two peas in a pod even though junghwan tends to be more energetic than her, and he never minds it that she likes using him to make zitao/kyungsoo flustered or whatever. he knows lan will protect him with all she has and that's the only reason why he lets her do that. they love each other, but it's only platonic. (they also have this thing where they bump fists with each other, and it's only between them that they do this.)
surprisingly close friends | kim, hyunah (hyuna, 4minute) | 18 | junior year student | loud, confident, flirty, friendly | out of all the people lan first befriended, she's glad that she and hyunah stayed friends ever since she first moved. hyunah understands lan, and they like being around each other since they have somewhat similar personalities. they're touchy with each other, and others don't understand, but that's just them. they have this thing where they ruffle each other's hair, and it's only between them that they do this with, usually anyways.
good friends | lu, han (exo) | 18 | junior year student | whatever else this man's love interest wants | lan happened to meet lu han first when she first moved and attended sooman high. she bumped into him while trying to find her way around the school after she asked junghwan where things are. they quickly clicked because she naturally sputtered out an apology in mandarin and he was surprised by it, instantly talking to her back in it. they like to talk about soccer and kick the ball around with minseok, and she's slowly being convinced into being a manchester united fan. she honestly doesn't know how she feels about that yet.
good friends | zhang, yixing (exo) | 17 | junior year student | whatever else this man's love interest wants | lan met yixing after lu han found out that lan's last name was zhang. he thought that since they had the same last names, they'd instantly click for some reason. how they didn't think this through. right after she met yixing, they took an instant liking to each other and quickly started making jokes with their last names, saying they were married or brother/sister, whatever seemed to fit the situation at the time. they have an uncanny sense of observing their surroundings quietly and immediately knowing what the other is thinking. the only thing the rest of the crew didn't expect was that their views on magical beings and any myths differed completely, always seen arguing that unicorns do (not) exist and that fairytales will only be fairytales, nothing more.
rivals/enemies | another applicant | tbd | tbd | someone who believes in folklore and all that? or who knows about her slight gullible side and just tries to exploit it | lan and this other applicant just don't mesh well due to their personalities. it's nothing (too) personal, but then it could escalate easily later on, causing tensions within the group.

bound to him by fate

love interest  »  huang zitao

backup love interest  »  do kyungsoo, kim minseok

personality  »  to put it simply, huang zitao is a contradiction in himself. starting from the inside, one can see that he genuinely cares for his 'brothers' in the way he clings onto some of them, begs for cake from one of them, or constantly asks for money from the other few of them. but being with zitao for as long as the others can remember, they have just taken that as 'it's just his ab style personality.' he admits that his ways may not be the best to show he cares or his way with words could be deceiving since he's still having trouble saying some korean words, but his cute looks and aegyo will basically get him out of anything he manages to get himself in. and not so surprisingly, he's honest and straightforward with his opinions, easily saying with a shrug of the shoulders if something is not to his style or if something tastes disgusting.

despite this though, he does have the tough exterior and fear from others with his height and defined muscles if nobody knows how he actually is. he's known to be in the martial arts club in sooman high, and it's for good reason too. he's learned wushu from a young age and has mastered the arts of it by the time he entered high school. even if he tends to hide first from danger, he will eventually be one of the wolves on the front lines to defend those he loves. he has the hidden aura and sense of an alpha and makes sure to use it to his advantage if he needs to. he has also been seen as narcissitic with how he knows he has great muscles and always admires himself in the mirror, but he won't deny that he's (and his other friends are) gorgeous. it's basically his self-confidence that makes him a lot stronger when he needs to be.

all in all, with zitao's tough looks but soft personality, someone could describe him as a souffle dessert simply in the way he acts and is. it'd make sense though, especially when kyungsoo stares at him a bit longer than usual when the younger tries to get cake from him any chance he gets. it's a wonder how someone so fit could crave cakes like that and not gain weight, but huang zitao is a special, unpredictable case in many ways, and he'd proudly attribute it to his 'panda loving ab-style that only huang zitao can pull off.'

our story  »  when zitao first entered sooman high as a first year, lan was entering the brand new school as a second year. to say zitao was surprised was an understatement. he was definitely overwhelmed by the sudden assault of a variety of scents that he couldn't help but scrunch his nose up in frustration and distaste. he couldn't tell anything apart, and that annoyed him. as the days went on into a couple of weeks, they never really did acknowledge each other except whenever lan and lu han talked to each other, seeing as how they both loved soccer and were with their respective gender's soccer club (as well as being chinese). zitao thought she smelled funny, but he was new to the whole school (and so was she), so he just thought everybody smelled funny then. when lu han introduced lan to the rest of exo present, he couldn't help but scrunch his nose at her before telling her she smelled funny, earning hits from the older members and saying that was impolite. lan was definitely surprised, but she tried to not let it affect her, trying to indiscreetly smell herself to see if she really did smell bad. lu han told her she didn't smell funny at all and to not listen to zitao before they separated ways.

as time passed on, zitao could still smell that funny smell and always unconsciously followed it whenever it got close enough to him. he questioned yifan and junmyeon about it, and they said they weren't sure what he was talking about. when they found their own mates, the smell that radiated off of them were divine and pleasant, not funny and questionable. however, when he followed lu han and minseok to the soccer fields randomly one day (based on instincts), his eyes widened when he saw lan playing out there for fun with junghwan where they tried to playfully tackle each other to get the ball within their own feet. he didn't know what was happening, but before he knew it, he surprisingly locked eyes with lan for a brief moment when she was laughing and incredibly happy and then he was trying to break free from lu han and minseok's grips, ending up being held back by yifan and questioned behind the bleachers what was going on. it was then that the rest figured out that he most likely found his mate, which was odd because it was confirmed through sight and not exactly smell.

the first time they had a decent conversation though, it was a few months later after kyungsoo had bribed him with a large cake to finally go talk to the girl he's been unknowingly somewhat bonded with by fate (and stalking unconsciously). (if you want to know, he had been sulking while eating cakes because really, his mate should come to him and not the other way around, and especially not continuously hanging around junghwan.) lan was sitting on the bleachers beside the soccer field after her run just staring out onto it by herself when she noticed zitao (as she remembered from the first odd encounter) standing in front of her on the ground staring up at her. she looked down at him questionably, tilting her head to the side, before calling him up to join her. 'i don't bite, you know?' she called out, watching as zitao quickly shuffled his way up the bleachers to sit next to her. 'that's funny,' he mumbled back, knowing he could very well bite her in return. lan just continued to stare at him, wondering what he was doing, and when she opened to speak, he beat her to it. 'can i give you an awkward hug?' to say lan was confused was a correct statement because the next thing she knew, she was being pulled into a very tight hug by the man who first called her 'funny smelling' months ago.

it was then, though, that zitao figured out why her scent was so funny. he buried his nose into the crook of her neck and inhaled a deep breath, not minding the remaining sweat now transferring onto his skin or the leftover scent of it. 'you smell like the sea,' he mumbled into her hair, feeling her hesitantly hugging him back because she was still very much confused at the turn of events, 'you smell like home.' lan wanted to ask what he was talking about but before she knew it, he was already pulling away with a soft smile on his face. 'i'm from qingdao,' he opened up, 'and i always loved the sea.' lan still had no idea what was going on, but she just returned the smile, reaching out to unconsciouly fix his fringe and switch back to mandarin. 'and i'm from beijing, zitao.' they ended up talking about china and school for the rest of the day until the rest of exo came to drag zitao away. it wasn't without him pulling out his aegyo and begging them that she joined them (and demanding the cake that kyungsoo promised him if he talked to her), and that was when lan started to get whiplash trying to keep up with his odd childish yet manly when he wanted to be personality.

after that, they easily became a lot closer simply because of similar backgrounds and everything (minus the wolf part) as well as the fact that their personalities somewhat meshed well together. zitao is knowingly dependent on others, and lan is happy to provide the wall needed for him. he doesn't change much except that he becomes easily jealous of junghwan and hyunah and he tries to do aegyo on her even though she hits him for it because she hates unnecessary aegyo. it doesn't change the fact that she blushes because of his attempts and does whatever he wants. they do end up arguing sometimes though because they clash on opinions or how things should be done (other times, they just argue, just to randomly argue), but it doesn't stop zitao (mostly because mate, he has to be the one who cracks first most of the time since she won't do it) from trailing after her scent and apologizing softly with his head on her shoulder.

however, she still doesn't know about his wolf side until lu han suddenly brings it up to her one day, expecting her to have already known about it because zitao isn't exactly known for being quiet about it (or anything for that matter). long story short, he never found the right way to say it and kept quiet about it this whole time (surprise!), and she didn't believe any of them because of her realist side and has trouble believing it after zitao transforms in front of her. she's shocked by it and even more so when the others transform too. she thinks she's gone crazy but when she sees some of the other girls easily accepting it, she frowns and stares zitao's form in the eye before walking away. the others watch her in shock before zitao quickly moves and blocks her way, continuing to block her until he gets his head under her hand and nuzzles it. that was the start of it, again, and lan ends up accepting it bit by bit as time goes on.

lan thinks of zitao as a complete contradiction ranging from his looks to how he acts, but his soft yet protective side is what gets her to want to take care of him and like him. she often expects him to come to her every day and is surprised he doesn't smother her as often (he tends to whine later, but she calms him down easily) like yifan does with eunji or any of the others (even if she hangs out with junghwan, he doesn't necessarily smother her. he just growls and hugs her tight to get rid of the other's scent on her). he usually just finds her and puts his head on her shoulder before speaking, and she likes how skinship is a regular thing between them. he's unpredictable to her, and she likes that about him. for zitao, lan is like a delicate flower to him because of her small, petite stature, but she continually proves otherwise with her strong mentality and constant defiance against yifan (explained above). he treasures her and he still can't believe that his mate smells like the sea and home and he just feels incredibly lucky with what life threw at him. (he still doesn't know why he thought she smelled funny all those months ago though.)

the backup personality »
for someone who has to deal with ten other idiotic packmates he has to call his friends, kyungsoo has without a doubt had to pick up the role of 'mother' to the insane group, being one of the three sane enough to take care of them and be able to cook edible meals. he would never verbally admit it, but he's glad that he was the one who took up that specific role for them. he's truly caring in the oddest of ways (baekhyun:
yah! stop strangling me! kyungsoo: hell no! clean up your filth, idiot!) and would do anything for those he calls his brothers, even if he'll deny it a million times over and prefer to hurl insults at them one right after another instead. however, this contributes to his surprisingly high stamina despite his soft looks. he's deceivingly strong and can hold his own when in trouble, and also the fact that he knows these special moves that can render his opponent weak in a matter of seconds if he's put enough pressure on the right spots.

with a constant reminder almost every day, kyungsoo gets reminded about his small stature and how innocent he looks. he has the large, doe eyes that scream innocence and the heart-shaped lips others would die to have thrown in their direction. but these are apparently just looks. kyungsoo claims he's not as innocent as he makes out to be and states he knows anything and everything there is to know about and other questionable topics. (and he isn't afraid to show it either later on with his mate.) it'd make sense though since he's usually seen around jongin more than the rest. the only thing he is innocent about is this sudden 'mate-bond.' he has no idea what his is or where his own mate currently is. he doesn't want to actively search for her and thinks that it'll just happen on its own time. he figures it'd be easier on him that way anyways since he still has to take care of his own group of friends before he can do his own thing.

he's genuinely selfless and caring in the odd way he has a secret tendency to troll his friends, but they know it. they know how he acts, caring for them and expecting nothing in return, and see it, accepting it simply as do kyungsoo and that's it. what they haven't seen is the younger man actually become flustered or nervous unless he's made to speak in front of a large crowd, but even then, he's learned how to control his facial features to where he looks absolutely calm despite a stutter or two leaving his mouth. but as he finally finds his mate, he ends up doing things he's never really done before, and it catches him completely off-guard. he's had these secret goals plannet out for school and life in general, but it practically all goes flying out the window. he ends up becoming more flustered than usual only because she's a girl and because she actually takes care of him, and he becomes noticeably more aggressive and possessive. he's never been taken care of before so he doesn't know what to do when he usually has an idea of how things should go.

the backup story »
the first time kyungsoo and lan met, it was during the first week of her second year and his first year of high school. lan was completely lost on where to go since she just transferred to sooman high and walked past a group of guys she had no clue about. she bumped into this pretty boy and, flustered, automatically apologized in mandarin. she was completely surprised to see the look of shock on his face (lu han) before he spoke to her back in mandarin and quickly helped her out on where she needed to go. before she left, she idly scanned the group of boys with him and was surprised to see a pair of large eyes staring right back at her. it took a few seconds, but she finally thanked them in korean before going on her way. to her, she just thought it was odd how an asian man had such large eyes, but to him, he had no idea what to think. kyungsoo thought she smelled different, but since this whole 'mate-bond' thing was pretty new according to his older friends, he just attributed it to her being chinese and being completely new to the whole country. he always thought lu han (because of soccer), zitao (he always wore some type of cologne), yixing (he doesn't want to know), and yifan (he's yifan) smelled funny, so he just thought it could've been a foreigner type of weird smell before he followed after the rest of his friends.

of course, they kept crossing paths after that simply because lan somehow always seemed to get lost in their school even though she should've known where everything was by then. they would always smile and say a polite 'hi' to each other before she left to go find where she needed to go. lan had no idea, but she just felt like she could get along with him well. but by the time it was their school mid-terms (or finals before winter holidays), kyungsoo stumbled upon her studying in the library by herself. when he asked junmyeon and minseok about the weird smell, they both said that she could be his mate (or that she just smelled funny in general), so he figured now was good as any to strike up a conversation with her because she looked ready about to rip her book in half in frustration. when he walked up to her, he didn't expect her to suddenly slam her head down on the table, and he flinched.

kyungsoo hesitantly greeted her before taking up her offer to sit on the opposite chair from her. they sat there, heads lying on the desks but facing opposite directions before they introduced themselves and kyungsoo asked if she was okay. when she responded a few silent minutes later, kyungsoo turned his head to offer his help but widened his eyes in shock (same with lan) when they found themselves mere centimeters away from each other, staring into each other's eyes. that was the moment kyungsoo knew she was officially his mate. he couldn't believe it took being that close to her to figure it out, and he didn't know what else to do other than scramble up, stare down at her in shock, then stumble his way out of the library only to bump into the beagle line walking by.

the next time they met, they didn't really meet. kyungsoo was always teased by his packmates because he would always be lurking behind walls and corners just spying on lan to make sure she was okay and not stressing herself out to the max and not randomly clinging on some random guy even though he knows nothing is going on between her and this 'junghwan' (sandeul) kid. if she was, he'd instantly intervene or make one of the chinese wolves go and talk to her for a few minutes to help calm her down some. yifan highly objected because he didn't want to be bossed around, and it usually ended up being zitao anyways because kyungsoo bribed him with cake. this continued to go on for about a week before both minseok and junmyeon shoved him away from their group to actually go confront lan again when they caught him staring through the library entrance again, catching her scent of orchards... and rain? needless to say, he immediately took on his 'blank' face and walked over to her when she looked up inquisitively and he became flustered once again.

she just smiled at him and plainly told him that she knew he's been watching her, she just had no idea why. it was then that she heard loud noises outside the library and when she looked to the entrance, she saw kyungsoo's friends cheering him on obnoxiously and she told him she also had no idea why he would hang out with them on a voluntary basis. he simply told her it wasn't necessarily by choice. she just laughed at that before asking him help with her korean class and offered him her own help with them afterwards. this time, he had no idea what she meant but helped her out anyways. and he definitely didn't expect her help to come in the form of helping him take care of his duties as the 'mother' of his pack.

this became the start of their wonderful friendship/relationship. they'd help each other out, and kyungsoo would always become surprised when it's actually somebody else taking care of him instead of the other way around. he never even told her he was a wolf in fear of her rejecting him until he told his packmates one day that she doesn't know about him/them being wolf(ves) yet. 'never came up?' he watched as they all gaped at him before he collapsed. 'okay, well. i've brought it up once or twice about tales and everything. but she always says she doesn't really want to believe in them because they haven't been proven real, and she's a realist but she's really caring, guys, and i want this to go as smoothly as possible until we're married and she'll never leave my side because she actually takes care of me, but i don't know how i can keep on going without her finding out i'm some wolf beast and guys. you're not saying anything.'

long story short, he ended up blurting out he was a wolf while he and lan were eating in the cafeteria. she only believed him partly because he had been constantly growling around her every time she was close with junghwan (which kyungsoo had no idea he had been growling unknowingly), but when he mentioned mates, she didn't believe it one bit, throwing away her trash and causing him to ramble on again while trying to catch up to her. in the end, it took some time and a lot of convincing from the added forces of junmyeon and minseok, but she slowly started to accept it, especially when kyungsoo growled around her more often than not.

last words.

comments/suggestions/questions  »  so. i was going to apply for kyungsoo and even had the whole relationship done for them, but then i kept thinking more and more about zitao and how he only had one applicant, and the cutie needs all the love he can get. (that's why i included kyungsoo's personality and relationship at the bottom as well. and some parts might be confusing, ugh this is a hot mess.) i'm so sorry this whole thing is so long though, and i rushed it and-- ;; you can change when they met to zitao's second year and lan's third year if you want though, and you can have total freedom when it comes to the rival/enemies part. i just thought it'd be fun in a dramatic way or something and yeah. i have no problems about that ;u; (two songs are linked below to the italicized parts)

scene requests  »
⇒ scenes of lan just hitting her head against the wall in frustration from something and scaring junghwan/zitao/kyungsoo and hyunah or somebody else just laughs and pats her head consolingly
⇒ a scene where lan actually starts crying and nobody knows how to react because even she doesn't know what to do
⇒ lan playing soccer with lu han and minseok and zitao pouting off to the side because he doesn't want to run and play with them but mate
⇒ cute moments between the girls and their wolves (who doesn't)
⇒ a scene of lan and zitao arguing about something dumb
⇒ the boys holding the 'funny-smelling mate' thing over zitao's head for who knows how long, and even lan gets in on it later on
⇒ i'm braindead. ohmygod. i'll add some more scenes later, if that's okay ;;
