Welcome to AFF, newbies! Here is a list of some of the basic things you need to know to function in AFF.

1. If you need to upload a DP, go to your profile and click 'Update Profile' under the Profile tab or click the gear icon called 'Settings' in the right side of the top bar. While you're at this page, might as well tick some boxes here and there, fill the body of the text editors for your Personal Message and About Me sections.

Below that is the space for Display Picture [DP] or Profile pic. If the image is in tumblr, simply right click on the image, and choose 'copy image URL'. Paste the URL in the space. If you want to use an image from your computer, upload it in Photobucket/imgur/minus. You can find the direct image url in the links box on the right side panel for Photobucket. For minus, click the image, then 'Share'. Copy the direct image url. Paste it on the space provided. (Note: The direct image url ends in .png, .jpg or .gif. It is different from the page url.)

2. Read the FAQ (below; I won't spoonfeed you with links. Look for it xD). This will help you know more about AFF - its features and how to use them, your rights and what to avoid. There is no longer a Support Page. If you want to report a story for plagiarism, for posting restricted content or for any violation in the terms of use, go to the foreword of that fic and you'll find the red/maroon'Report Content' link below labels. Blog posts also have this link. Paste the link of the original story if reporting plagiarism.

If you are experiencing  technical problems, go to AFFHelper. Hover your cursor on top of the Members icon in the main header and you'll find the link to AFFHelper in the blue/green bar that appears beneath. Or go to the homepage, you will find the profile link, as well as AFFHelper's blog posts, located on the lower left side. Read AFFHelper's FAQ in their Personal Message section before stating your purpose. Always tell them what browser you are using and provide them with a screenshot so they could understand your problem better. Be polite. And always say thank you.

Important: AFFHelper = technical problems; not Google.

For other issues, reach a moderator through the Report Content button in the foreword of stories and blogs.  Select a subject header in the drop-down. Paste links of proofs or evidence in the body of the box. Remember that they are volunteers. They assist us for free. We do not pay the site. We are not customers. We are just freeloaders. We are not entitled to anything so don't be demanding. Be polite. Always say thank you.

The difference between AFFHelper and Moderators: read here

3. To avoid getting banned, read the Terms of Use. We are in the 21st century where society is governed by rules. We have them here to keep the site from getting shut down. Know what you cannot do so that you don't ruin it for everyone else. Link is down, down... below. (Here is a list of terms written by conchobar in relation to guideline number four, to help you understand what shouldn't be written.)

Update: There is a new rating. If you tick the box for Rated M, it will appear. It is called NSFE or Not Safe For Everyone Trigger Warning. Know more by hovering over the underlined words  or go read AFFHelper's blog and FAQ. Stories marked with a trigger warning can be found in Rated M. Stories > Rated M > Trigger warning.

4. Subscribe if you want to receive chapter updates of a story. Upvoting is optional. Featured story of the week is based on the number of upvotes a story has. You need 25 karma points in order to be allowed to upvote. Like a pass. But upvoting is free. Know more about karma points in the FAQ section. It is the currency here in AFF.

5. Get to know other users by going to Social. Enter a discussion or comment in a blog post.

6. Or get to know the author of the story you like by dropping in his/her wall. Make sure you hit reply and not post in your own wall.

7. If you need to search stories featuring a particular artist, just click the tag. You can find them tags in stories if you browse the homepage. Go to 'Tags' (up there, next to 'Write') and type the word/name in one of the spaces. Hit filter search. You can narrow it down further if you click on the tag in one of the search results (stories are presented as title, author, tags). You can see that the top part gives you options on how you want to sort them. Like, Latest [latest updated fics first], Newest [New stories created], Completed, Oneshots, Alphabetical, Rated M...

We now have a negative search. Go to 'Tags'. Click exclude tags and type in the tags that you do not wish the results to have. So if you don't like to read any exo fic, just write exo in one of the spaces. I made a guide on how to search for fics that do not feature exo.  Read it here.

8. Users offer free graphic, trailer, review and many other services. Find them through tags. Refer to number 7. Click on the shop that has the [OPEN/accepting requests] sign in the title. Check out the shop's posters, trailers or reviews. Then if you are satisfied with the kind of work they deliver, read and follow their rules. Fill up the form completely. Hope that your request gets accepted. Or if you don't need any of their services yet, just browse through the shops regardless of status.

9. To insert a graphic in the body of your text, get the direct url of the image (ref to number 1). In the text editor, find the image icon in the first row of toolbar. It looks like a painting of the sun and mountains. Click it. A box will appear. Paste the url on the url space. Click ok.

If you want to add a poster as the main image and background of your story, edit the story's foreword. Click the 'add images' link and then simply paste the direct image urls in the spaces for main image and background.

10. To embed a video, go to YT video. Click Share. Choose embed. Copy the embed code. In the text editor, click the first icon called Source. Paste the code. Then click the icon again for the normal text view.

11. To hyperlink, copy the url of the page you want to link to. In the AFF text editor, type a word or phrase referring to the page you are linking. Highlight it by dragging your mouse over it. Find the closed metal chain link in the first row. Click it. A box will appear. Paste the url in the space. Hit ok. [or you can watch Let's Hyperlink!]

12. If you want to post a story, click 'Write' up there, above your username. Make sure to tick the appropriate boxes. You can set it to draft, rate it or mark as oneshot in the foreword. By clicking 'show more privacy options', you can set your fic to subscribers only, invitation only, members only (only those with an AFF account and are logged in can view your story).

Get acquainted with the toolbar. Lots of buttons to click. Anyway, you'll figure it out once you try them. Read. Read. Read. Click. There is an allotted space for the main image (poster) and background image urls. Leave notes for your subscribers in the Story Feed located in the left side panel, right under the advertisement boxes. If an author whose fic you subscribed to leaves notes, you can view it from your profile page on the left side panel below the advertisement box, the Subscriber Feed. Lots of interesting things in the profile page. Figure them out.

If you have an account in Winglin, you can simply upload your story here via the Importer. Hover your cursor above the Write icon in the main menu and select Importer from the blue/green bar.

13. See that blue box that appears everywhere with a link to a story? That's AFF's advertisement box. On the upper left hand corner or just the top corner, click 'advertise'. It will lead you to the advertising calendar. But you'll also see the phrase, 'How it Works'. Click and read. If you don't have karma to win a bid, advertise your stories in advertisement shops or your blog.

14. What is an rp? Roleplay. Browse rp fics using tags. Notice that the default advertisement when viewing RP fics is RolePlay Republic. That's AFF's sister site, created by the same owner, solely for RP. On the blue box, you'll find a link to 'how it works'. Another site is FanficOverflow. The link is at the bottom of the page.

15. We can now choose a default font and font size for the site. Click Profile >'Site Preferences' or click the gear icon top and then click away!

Version 3.0 also allows us to choose themes: blue, green or black and white version 3.0 themes, old version 2.0 and mini-opera theme for mobile. The drop-down menu is in the homepage, right side. Here is a quick guide for version 3.0 :D

16. If you want a layout, go to the Layout Marketplace. Hover your cursor over Social and on the blue/green/black bar, click Layouts. Read the FAQ to know more. If you find the tutorials in the Layout Marketplace too complicated to understand, I also made guides on how to install/apply layouts directly to your fics and if you are a coder, how to make layouts that are ready to be used.

Or you can get them from layout shops. First, you need the code. It is either linked in the preview chapter or you can ask for the html codes from the designer. I suggest you read their forewords first because shops usually give out instructions. Once you have obtained the code, copy everything. Then go to the text editor (it is where you type words for your blog and story). Click the very first icon in the first row called 'Source'. Paste the code. Click 'Source' again for the normal mode and then edit. Or you can switch to the Textarea Mode. See those sentences in gray and tiny font above the default editor? You'll find the link to Textarea Mode there. Paste and then edit.

17.  Polls can be found under the 'Other' tab. To make one, click create poll then fill in the blanks with the information required. You'll know what I'm talking about when you try it. Once that is done, save poll. Copy the html code and then on your text editor (story or blog), click the first icon called 'Source', and paste it there. Click source once again for the normal view and then save post.

18. You can post a story/chapter and blog posts using your phone. Here's how.

19. We can read chapters offline. Simply go to the chapter, click Save (go offline). In your Profile page, click the 'Stories' tab and select 'Saved Offline' in the drop down menu. Bookmark that page so that when you have no internet access, you can simply browse the Offline page in the Bookmarks of your phone browser.

20. Making a blog post is pretty straightforward. In your Profile page, click the Blog tab and press the 'Write New Blog' button. Or in the main header, click the Write icon and select New Blog from the drop-down bar.  Another way is through the top navigation bar, click Blog and then press the 'Write New Blog'.

21. Starting your own Discussion for questions or conversation topics is easy. In your Profile, click the Other tab and select Discussions from the drop-down menu. Click the green 'Create New Discussion' button. Fill up the title and description fields; tags are optional. Press 'Add Chatroom'. WAIT. And then post the first message.

You created the discussion, you start the conversation. Do this so that users would 'reply' to your post and you would be notified with 'new chat reply'. We do not have a 'new chat post' notification. So unless you check your discussion every once in a while, you wouldn't know that others have replied.

22. The owner of the site is Nichiren. Want to know how AFF was created? Its history? It's a love story. Read  it here.

For technical issues and suggestions, go to AFFHelper, not him. Be polite.

23. Interested in roleplaying, here's a guide on how make a roleplay and how to join a roleplay in RoleplayRepublic, AFF's sister site.

24. Do not give away personal information. Do not share your password. Always lock your laptop or log off from the site; don't leave the page open. Always clear browser cache and cookies, especially when experiencing technical difficulties.

25. I am tired. Go to the homepage. There is a 'Did you know?' box in the bottom of the left panel. Wait, watch and read.  Or if you see a word underlined in grey dotted lines, hover above it and read.

26. And the key to success: If you can click it, click. If it is a button with a word/s in it. Click again. Explore the site. Enjoy.
