A DB5K, HoMin, JYJ Talent Analysis Rant

This contains rant about DBSK and JYJ. That was my warning. Please don't give me any .

This is a DBSK content based blog. I was just on youtube watching live performances of various songs. I get in the mood every now and then when I hear good vocals or see great dancing in a MV. I think “Wow, can they do this live?” When it concerns DBSK, they often can and will perform well; unlike Niel who does not sing Clap live as well as I wish he would. But it was their debut song so I forgive him.

But I rewatched an ad on Avex about DBSK’s recent Dome tours in Japan, which is pretty amazing, but I cringed to see months full of hundreds of comments just bashing JYJ. Like, what? For the most part, there were HoMin stans saying that JYJ stans need to stop coming on HoMin videos and talking about them, and marking any comment defending JYJ as spam while saying that the delusional fans needed to get it into their head that DBSK only had two members. They also made comments about fake fans of five that pretend to support the groups when they are really whiny butthurt babies.

It hurts me so much.

Guys, I am first and foremost a DB5K fan. I will often cry in when I hear one of their ballads or acapella songs play because they are just so beautiful and I regret so much that I will never be able to hear another live performance of it. My favorite DBSK song is Bolero, and that song is like 100% harmony and pure angelic talent. I don’t like calling singers angelic, or describing their voices that way, and maybe angelic isn’t the right way to describe the harmony those five had together, but sometimes it just fits.

I could and probably will link to a bunch of DBSK acapella songs because hearing them just makes you understand. I’m not a fan of DBSK for their variety show talent or their good looks or their ability to act well. I am a fan of their voices. I am a fan of their talent.

The 3:35 - 4:40 part is my favorite.

So it makes sense for any person who appreciates music and talent like I do to be upset that DBSK is no longer a five member group. I will never be able to hear the songs from their peak of fame at their best anymore. I fear that I will never hear Bolero, or Begin, or Love in the Ice, or Why Did I Fall in Love with You anymore. I’m like a scholar that mourns the burning of a book.

But it so irritates me to see people lash out and tear my fandom apart. I don’t particularly care for other fans unless we are discussing things past “Oh my gawd, his body is so hawt!” That’s why I love my Mariaboo. We can love a group, rip them to shreds, and still appreciate the music they made, make, and will make. When we do that, we also respect the artist in the end.

Why the can’t people respect each other?

JYJ have no talent. HoMin have no talent! They are greedy! They are cowards. Why does it even matter? In the process of loving their music, I’ve come to love each person individually as well. So I don’t care whether Yunho’s drama’s flop and Yoochun’s do well. I don’t care if Jaejoong composes more songs than Changmin. I don’t care if SM songs are higher quality than C-Jes songs, for the most part. (Because I happen to hate SM in the more recent years. A lot of song mashing that doesn’t need to happen in my opinion.)

I want to address this issue of JYJ’s songs being worse than HoMin. And yes, I will continue to call them HoMin since I am talking about past and present DBSK in the same blog and don’t won’t to confuse myself or anyone else.

JYJ’s songs are worse. There is no getting around that. I think it is reasonable to say that. Their first album, The Beginning, was terrible not only because it was in English, but also because they paired up with Kanye West for a disastrous MV and title track. Frankly, I only like Ayyy Girl because I like to rap along with Kanye. It’s just that bad. The problem was that JYJ were a new group that needed to get music out fast. They had their Japanese EP with four songs a few months earlier, but they needed something big to really establish themselves that year. So it was just shoddy production, bad partners, and a bad language choice. When they sang in English, so many untimely levels of falsetto came out that ruined their beautiful voices.

Their other album, In Heaven or Get Out or whatever, had better production overall, but Get Out was probably a terrible song to promote. And even though Jaejoong is my bias, I will say it is his vocals that ruin the song altogether. It sounds whiny, they all look sick, and they a look gay. I mean that in the nicest way too. Maybe they were just pulling an SM by promoting one of the worst songs on the album. (I mean, I like Get Out to an extent, but there are clearly better songs on the album!)

But In Heaven. Oh In Heaven. That song and Pierrot are both beautiful songs that I wouldn’t mind hearing with DB5K. I’d love to hear the acapella, I’d love to hear Junsu sing them in oneshot with added backup vocals. I’d love to hear them live, serenading me outside my bedroom window. No, in bed with me. People cannot say that JYJ have no talent when they have songs like those two. Yes, this is why I still support JYJ!

Their In Heaven album was supposed to be the album that allowed them to return to Korean television, but if I remember correctly, stations wouldn’t allow them on because there is a line in Pierrot that says “that’s really P SM” along with the previous lines that provide the context which the stations claimed to have been inflammatory towards a person (Lee Sooman). While I totally believe it, after JYJ gave their denial statement, that should have been the end of it.

No, since their ing lawsuit, JYJ have not performed live on television.

What did HoMin do in that time? They regrouped and started re-recording their Keep Your Head Down album. As many DB5K fans might have already heard from a HoMin Maximum dance practice video, Keep Your Head Down album (or at least Maximum because it was supposed to be the title track) with all five members. The whole album had to be shacked and recreated to fit two members. Choreography had to change. Costumes. Concepts. Vocal ranges. Everything!

While JYJ have Junsu, their strongest singer and dancer, Jaejoong, their visuals/composer, and Yoochun, their baritone/rapper/composer, HoMin have Changmin, the high pitches and strong vocals, and Yunho, the rapper/okay singer/dancer. Theoretically, JYJ beat out HoMin in terms of farmable talent. However, SM is a much bigger and better company with their hands on not only composers, arrangers, lyricists, costume designers, concept managers, vocal trainers, dance instructors, and a plethora of other people to assist them. C-Jes kind of has JYJ and their own personal connections to help.

We wonder why JYJ songs are worse than HoMin songs? Which company is better? When people praise a group, they are only praising their idols for work they didn't actually put into it. This is probably what infuriates me the most about ignorant comments judging talent and production. Which will look better, a professional artist’s painting, or one done by a two year old? C-Jes just does not have the same resources as SM.

That’s why I praise JYJ for having so many self produced songs. Many of the songs on Junsu’s and Jaejoong’s solo albums were written by a member. The In Heaven album is like 90% self written. Yes, HoMin do that too (Changmin’s Confession for one), but not to the extent that JYJ have to.

Can we just respect the fact that they have three (four soon) bloody Korean albums of so many self written songs? So who the says they have no talent?

And these people are HoMin stans, some of them even admitted to never liking DBSK as five. So how the would they know what JYJ have done? They have no right to judge them. That would be like me calling EXO untalented just because I hate Wolf. Except I don’t think that because some of the other songs on that album (most of the other songs… all the other songs but like one) are really great. So there are just some really rude people out there who need to bite their tongues (off).

So we come to the point where people talk about JYJ’s recent music and say it’s not to their taste. There have been a lot of people giving Junsu a lot of smack for Tarantallegra because it is so weird. Well, considering the fact that Junsu knew it would never be aired on TV anyway, he went big and said it. So yeah, he has gay looking men, and foreign women with big thighs, and he dressed like a girl, and that MV is crazy and ual. Junsu is a mothering good artist and the majority of his album was beautiful like a musical.

The fact is, JYJ know they aren’t allowed to be on air. Even though they won their lawsuit. Jaejoong’s I album came out after the lawsuit was settled, did he get on television? Big fat NOPE. Did any fan ever really expect him to? Nope again.

That hurts too.

JYJ can’t do on TV, so they do whatever the they want. HoMin are still under thumb though and make things that are good, but not surprising in the least. I wouldn’t say I’ve been shocked by any artistic production. The Korean songs are especially cookie cutter, and the Japanese ones are usually very autotuned or too soft. I might not like JYJ’s songs as much (then again, I might), but they are definitely more interesting.

I also really respect HoMin. They stuck to their guns and carried on the story of TVXQ! I recognize the struggle with every song they sing. Some songs sound like mixed up repeats of earlier ones simple because there are only two of them. Junsu has a wide range of vocals while Yunho has almost no range at all, so the difference in what they actually can produce is staggering. I’m very pleased to see that HoMin songs are not just Changmin singing and Yunho rapping; that would be just as devastating as another Kanye collaboration.

Their biggest obstacle singing wise is their ability to sound different. You can probably tick off on your fingers how many of the songs HoMin came out with recently have Changmin doing his infamous high note with Yunho’s nasally rapping. This is a challenge they face by simply being SM artists because SM just recycles songs and concepts.

Despite the fact that they have this one minor inconvenience to deal with, HoMin have a lot of advantages. They have an already established company, an already established name, and an already established fanbase. What more do they need to carry on their successful careers? No, they will probably never be as powerful as before, but they will still be immensely popular.

Why do some people think feel like they need to attack JYJ or HoMin (or their fans) when the two groups are already doing their own ?

One person kept commenting on how JYJ deserve to suffer because they left behind such a sweet deal. I wanted to just hit them through the internet. Because as they say this, they kept insisting that DBSK is a two member group and any efforts the other three put into their fame should just be dismissed.

DBSK IS ONLY FAMOUS BECAUSE THERE WERE FIVE OF THEM TO BEGIN WITH.

I don’t want to hear anymore of this bull that DBSK could have been just as, if not more, famous with just HoMin as the members. No they would not be. I would not love HoMin’s voices. I would not fall in love with their acapella. I would not love their Bolero. While these s call DB5K fans delusional, they themselves are the most delusional for thinking that HoMin would even be popular without the power of their history as five.

DBSK was crafted as a five member group. The dynamics of the members, their interactions, their talent, their dancing, and their determination helped build them up and it was only by cruel manipulation that they were separated. HoMin stans need to thank JYJ for helping DBSK get to where they are now and also thank them for leaving so they can have their precious HoMin only combo!

But the argument I kept seeing. Gah! It was just over and over “DBSK is a two member group. Get over it!” I perfectly understand that DBSK is a two member group. It doesn’t mean I don’t miss the five member group. When a husband and wife get divorced, the kids don’t usually “get over it.”

IT’S NO USE TO DENY THE PAST. IT IS WHAT SHAPES US!

I love both the present DBSK and JYJ. I am not going to choice one and I am not going to let my love for DB5K be silenced.

This makes it seem like only HoMin stans bash the other group, but JYJ stans do the same back. They talk about how HoMin were cowards and didn’t leave with them because of some bull reason, I don’t know. But what I usually see is praise for JYJ’s efforts. I don’t see HoMin bashing as often simply because JYJ is technically a newly established group while DBSK lost their members. It’s easy to reminisce on a DBSK video and remember the good old days because DBSK did once have those people in their group. JYJ have never had Changmin or Yunho in it so comments about them are less frequent.

So yeah, that was my DBSK/JYJ/HoMin rant.

I cannot pick and choose between who's better I love them all the same to be honest. I got into DBSK around the lawsuit era sadly, so I never got to experience them as five but for me I just couldn't choose between them like some fans had done. Why not just like all of them instead of choosing between TVXQ or JYJ? They're from the same group, just seperated is all. No matter what people might say, I will still continue to support all five of them equally no matter what may happen ^^ That's what fans should be doing, instead of arguing and fighting.

Everything has changed - that is a fact.
But one fact that everyone seems to forget is
DBSK began with 5 members.
Stans are always the major pain in this fandom.
We just got to deal with those immature brats :)

I am a DB5K and JYJ fan. I do like HoMin, but the feeling is incomplete when the other 3 are not there with them.

I like listening to their DB5K songs especially their acapella.
