languages spoken
english — being born and raised in america, aubrey is most definitely fluent in the language. she speaks in a standard american accent, mostly sounding white because of her surroundings. she speaks this language most in comparison to the other languages she speaks.

korean — as a child, aubrey's parents made sure to teach her mothertongue language. she is less confident in the language than she is in english, sometimes mixing her native to her mothertongue in some sentences. but she's definitely has a decent korean. though, it's a little hard for her to write in korean than speaking it.

spanish — aubrey speaks conversational spanish, as she learnt the language in school. aside from school, she also learnt the language from her hispanic friends back in the states. she knows everyday sentences like "nice to meet you" or "what's for lunch", but that's pretty much it.

01
essentials

aubrey ji is a quiet yet complex individual, hidden secrets inside her body and mind going round and round 24/7. she's rather distant than her peers, preferring to quietly read books and writing her own lyrics as to chat with other people. she's the type of person who'd rather keep all her thoughts inside her head and hide everything from others. she's friendly at first glance, and would engage in conversations, but she won't be one to initiate it. she's a great listener and she gives great advices to her close friends. yes, she does have close friends, but even tho them she's rather distant.

aubrey works hard, very very hard. she's very attentive and pays very close attention to the details of one single piece. if she doesn't like a piece of writing she did or if she feels like the piece she produced is a little off, she'd modify the piece until it suits well with what she had in mind and until it feels just right, keeping account to the rhythm and beat. she prefers to work alone to bring out the best of her works, as she doesn't like hearing people criticize her work and try to make her modify things that she already liked.

to others, it may seem like aubrey's just doing whatever, but she's actually very competent in her field. she's very passionate about singing and would practice over and over again until she feels satisfied with herself, as she lacks self confidence. aubrey tries her best to bring the best out of herself, whether it's singing, dancing, producing, or just normal tasks in general. she wouldn't eat or sleep or rest until she feels just right with the way her voice sounds. aubrey's just that much of a perfectionist.

she prefers doing thing alone, everything. from waking up to practicing to doing everyday chores, even group work when she was still in school. she does it alone. and it's because she likes things her way, and would get hurt if other people try and touch or modify the way things are. she's a bit sensitive when she's facing other people's criticism and words, as she'd been treated roughly. so she built walls around her heart, only opening up to those she trust the most.

aubrey ji was born on october 29th, 1995, to a pair of korean immigrants in new york city, new york, usa.

growing up, aubrey listened to many old school kpop songs from groups like g.o.d, h.o.t, trax, s.e.s, finkl, sechskies, seo taiji and boys, jinusean, and other songs from groups her mom was a fan of. so you could say that aubrey has been familiar with the kpop world since an early age, but hasn't really touched it.

aubrey grew up in a neighborhood filled with asians, so she didn't really face any racism until she was sent to school. back then, she was constantly made fun of for having yellow skin and looking like a pig and having small eyes. she'd be made fun of for looking different than the other kids who were caucasian. since then, she became more reserved and secluded herself from playing with her schoolmates, preferring to play with the asian kids in her neighborhood.

as a student, aubrey had always been on top of her peers. how couldn't she? she'd read books everyday and spent most of her time studying to keep away from her schoolmates. she was always acing her tests and exams, always smarter than the others. her parents, being the asian parents they are, signed her up for piano lessons since she was twelve. she had piano lessons every monday and wednesday, spending her whole afternoon at home with her private piano tutor. it was no doubt that aubrey had good ears with music, as she'd know the right keys after listening to a piece almost right away.

starting from middle school, whenever aubrey would hang out with her friends, she'd always sing around them (as per their request, of course). she'd also sing when her grandparents are coming over and she'd sing when she feels like nobody's looking. and everytime she sings, she received compliments. aubrey was content, she felt loved, she felt special. so aubrey started singing on a daily basis, receiving compliments everytime. it was her dream to sing in front of a crowd, she'd always wanted to be a singer, but her parents didn't really think it was a good idea.

on the summer of 2009, aubrey found shinee's replay music video on her youtube recommendation. it was the first kpop song with a melody she liked. she was a huge fan of onew and jonghyun's voice as they were sweet yet powerful. afterwards, she would start looking up for more shinee related things and found other groups like snsd, super junior, and f(x). none of them sang in english, but the songs were catchy and they had cute lyrics. since then, she'd find herself humming and singing more often than she used to. it wasn't rare to hear her repeatedly singing replay and hum the lyrics she doesn't know and only sing the english parts.

aubrey was seventeen when she found ailee, an american who debuted in korea. when she looked her up on the internet, she was a bit shocked when it was revealed that she was born the same year as the artist. aubrey felt a little ashamed of herself, as ailee already had a career and a great life ahead of her, while she was still a high school junior, no job no career no nothing planned. she was a little jealous of the life ailee had. and so, on her birthday that year, aubrey told her parents she wanted to be a singer. aubrey told them that she wanted to be on stage and sing in front of a crowd, be it big or small. aubrey told them that she wanted to be able to write songs and sing them. aubrey told them all those with the galaxy shimmering in her eyes. and her parents knew that she was serious about pursuing a career in the entertainment field.

on december 24th, 2012, just a day before christmas, aubrey's parents took her to a music academy. they told her that they had signed her up for vocal lessons for her christmas present, stating that she should be able to sing nicely before being a professional singer. aubrey was delighted. she was so happy when she began training. she was thankful for her parents to be understanding. aubrey went to vocal lessons every tuesday, thursday, and saturday, and that happened all year round from 2012 to 2013.

on her eightteenth birthday in 2013, her parents had given her a launchpad. she was in glee. immediately, she started experimenting with it. with her experiences from piano lessons and the help of youtube, aubrey began producing remixes on audacity. it was crappy and weird, but aubrey was a tiny hit proud of herself for being able to work something out of a contraption she didn't understand and an application way too complex for her mind.

slowly, aubrey was getting more sure of herself. the remixes she made was getting better and her singing also improved after being introduced to a variety of singing techniques. so on christmas eve of 2013, she asked her parents if she could audition to be a singer. she told them that there was an entertainment company called jyp that was holding a global audition, and she really wanted to do it. her parents were skeptical at first, but after looking jyp up on the internet and found out that he was g.o.d's producer, they agreed to let their only daughter off.
BIOGRAPHY
the background of aubrey ji

aubrey starts her day by waking up and stretching in bed. afterwards, she'd get up and stretch and bend her body again. she'd then lousily head to the bathroom and wash her half asleep face. after finally coming to reality, she'd brush her teeth and take a nice warm morning shower.

aubrey isn't really the lazy type. she definitely prefers being productive since way early in the morning. so after her shower, she'd most likely cook up a nice breakfast for herself, make some coffee, then eat in a half-hurried manner, before going out to the kjs entertainment building to practice.

at kjs, aubrey'd spend the whole day in practice rooms. some days it's for vocal lessons, some other days it's practicing the dance routine she couldn't really do. she trains almost everyday except for sundays which is her day off. and even though it's her day off, she'd still come to the company building to practice and try to get as much creative juice she had with song writing or producing.

after her long day at kjs, aubrey would go home to her single apartment at roughly 2 in the morning, before finally settling on some sleep, before waking up again at 6AM to start a new day.

you could say aubrey has a very unhealthy lifestyle. not that she eats and sleeps like a pig, but because she seems to be working 24/7. she always seem to forget to take a break for lunch and dinner, and she always goes back home at the wee hours in the morning.

interview
could you please introduce yourself?
aubrey bowed to the lady in front of her and smiled, "hello! my name is aubrey ji hyunbi, nice to meet you!" she said nervously with her fluent korean. she's practiced before. she asked the other girls what was asked, she's got this.

why do you want to become an idol?
aubrey was surprised with the sudden blunt question, but she hid it perfectly under her calm facade. "it's my dream to become a singer since i was a ten," she started. "i wanted people to recognize my voice, and maybe my producing skills?" she said, ending the sentence like a question. "so i thought, why not go back to the country of my heritage to pursue it?" she said as a matter-of-factly.

what do you think being an idol is like?
aubrey paused for a while to think, before answering hesitantly. "being an idol... is a lot of work." she started, "from my experience, it's a countless amount of training and practicing, a lot of business relationships, a lot of failed comebacks, a lot of dissatisfaction and expectations, and a lot of fake smiles." aubrey nodded, satisfied with her answer. "being an idol also comes with a lot of fame and recognition. and that's about all the plus side there is to it." she said, while smiling nervously. "but i want to be a singer, no matter what." she ended with a smile.

what are some goals you are going to be setting for yourself?
"i want to be able to gain creative liberty over voltage's songs." she started off sternly. "i want to be able to show my capability in producing, i want to show that my songs are award worthy." she said, fire burning in her eyes. "i want to become voltage's main producer." she ended, a pleading expression on her face.

out of all companies, why kjs?
aubrey smiled, but her eyes were definitely sad. "i was desperate," she said and sighed. "my dream was to become a singer, so i trained and trained. and i got to debut but—" she paused, the lump in growing, tears were forming on the corner of her eyes, her lips were slightly trembling. one more word and the tears were going to gush down her face. she continued anyways. "but i never had a proper comeback and was sent to hiatus." she breathed in, trying to calm herself down. "so i left and tried to debut again, but i never did." she said, still trying to calm herself down. she took a deep breath, and let it all out. "that's why i'm here now. to achieve my dream as a singer." aubrey smiled, sad, but sincere.

relationships
YOON DA

aubrey looks up to the male, as she was a free-lance producer before as well. though they don't talk much, aubrey feels at home when she's working with the older. everytime they work at the studio (they apparently had to share one studio), there's a comfortable silence between them. their relationship is much of a daughter and her distant father. yoon da has been the one who reminds aubrey to rest and eat and sleep. he's been the one who took care of her when she needed help.

to yoon da, aubrey is a gemstone. he sees her as a great moneymaker. with her stunning visuals, unique voice color, and producing skills, yoon da was sure that with his assistance, aubrey could become a big name without mentioning voltage. yoon da wants to help aubrey grow and become the brightest star to ever shine, nothing more nothing less. though, when aubrey stated that she wanted to have creative liberty over voltage's songs, the older male did look a little displeased at her idea. but there was no tension afterwards.
JAMIE PARK

aubrey met jamie when she was a new fresh trainee at jyp entertainment. jamie was a debuted singer, a senior. but although she was a singer and aubrey was a mere trainee, they were close. their friendship started forming after constantly bumping into each other every vocal training. aubrey had had vocal training first, then it was 15&'s turn.

jamie started making small talks with the older every now and then, and the older replied. it was mostly just getting to know each other back then, throwing random facts about each other and all. but jamie was there when aubrey was about to debut, calming her down to ease her nervousness.

they grew closer afterwards, constantly hanging out together, doing vlogs together, etc. and although aubrey left jyp first, they still hang out to this day. jamie was and still is aubrey's friend, she helped aubrey with a lot of things. they talk to each other about their problems and give advices to each other. aubrey is grateful to be jamie's friend, and she hopes jamie feels the same.
BAEK YERIN

aubrey and yerin's relationship isn't as close as aubrey and jamie's. the two girls started off as acquaintances who knew each other from jamie. both yerin and aubrey had an unapproachable aura oozing from them, making it hard for them to become friends at first. but it became less awkward for them to interact when yerin started writing her own music and asked aubrey to help produce the song.

aubrey and yerin may not be as close as yerin and jamie or aubrey and jamie, but they're friends. they listen to each other and give each other advices and emotional support, and they help each other grow. and they grew beautifully together. although they're not as close as when aubrey was in jyp, they still meet up once in a while to read books and write sings together.
MATTHEW KIM

aubrey first met matthew when she auditioned for dsp media. matthew was an older trainee who had a lot of friends. he socialized easily and had a great sense of humor. matthew had helped aubrey get used to the perks of dsp media, conversing in english so that she'd feel more at home. it would be a lie if aubrey said she didn't have a teeny weeny crush on matthew at first.

the older boy was also a producer, though matthew had a totally different producing style than aubrey, leaning more towards hiphop and edm. while aubrey's style was more r&b. but matthew had helped aubrey with expanding her style range. most would say that matthew and aubrey's relationship revolves around music. they wrote songs together, produced together, etc.

their relationship slowly turned from not knowing each other, to becoming close friends, to having a sibling bond. they would bicker in english and do dumb things american siblings do. although aubrey's time in dsp was short, matthew made her feel part of the company. and just before aubrey left dsp in 2028, she gave trust me to KARD as a thank you gift for BM and the rest of the group.

b;rey has been her alias since she was a soundcloud artist circa 2014-2019, which has a huge following. she also went by this name in the credits section of songs she'd produced circa 2015-2018. so naturally, kjs wanted to keep the name to leech of her pre-existing fame.

trainee life
aubrey was first accepted as a trainee under jyp entertainment in 2014 from the global audition. she immediately flew from the states to south korea just to pursue her dreams to train there. upon the live audition at the jyp entertainment building, the trainers finally realized that she couldn't dance. so under jyp entertainment, she received harsh dance training because she was starting from scratch.

aubrey got yelled at by the dance trainers for having two left feet. she couldn't dance to save her life! she was trained even until midnight, and she lacked sleep. after a year of constant failure in the dancing field, the trainers eventually gave up and only set her for professional vocal training. and in six months, she was already set to debut solo under jyp in 2015.

but things went wrong. after her debut, she was set to hiatus because jyp was busy with their idol groups, neglecting the soloists. she was unable to make a proper comeback. so aubrey terminated her contract with jyp as an artist.

for half a year, aubrey had sold songs she produced to jyp and some other known agencies. those songs went to well-known artists like twice, woodz, and KARD. and that was when dsp media found her.

originally, she was offered only a producing job at the agency after she handed her portfolio. but aubrey wanted to be singing on the stage, she wanted people to listen to her voice. so she auditioned at dsp media. yet there was one problem, she still couldn't dance.

so for two years under dsp media, aubrey received strict dance lessons from basics to dance routines. she was shouted and yelled at. she received extreme treatments from the trainers. and she got better at getting into the rhythm and she got the beats correct. but it was still off. aubrey was stiff and lanky, she was hopeless. she had a great voice, but with her inability to dance, she couldn't become an idol. so dsp told her to only sing and produce songs.

she eventually quit dsp media after not being able to debut with KARD, even after the hidden kard rumors. she then started to free-lance again. selling songs she produced to companies. she earned money, enough just for her to live in south korea alone, living off instant ramen and cheap jjajangmyeon.

and that was when choi harang street casted her. desperately, she followed suit. training under kjs entertainment was different from training in the other companies. the trainers was harsher, stricter, and definitely miserable. the times she was yelled at and hit for being unable to dance was countless. she remembered crying in the corner of the practice room at four in the morning, desperately trying to do a dance routine. she was one of the ones who had to be given the harshest treatments in a year before making her debut with voltage under the name she was familiar with, b;rey.

ex-jyp artist hyun-b to debut under DSP media?
the article was released in 2016, after she was confirmed to be a trainee under dsp media. fans were waiting for her debut, figuring that she would've debuted fast with her talent and abilities.

[+1182 -389] can't wait for her debut! hyun-b fighting!
[+926 -180] she left jyp just to be in a nugu company? shame...

ex-jyp artist hyun-b to produce song(s) for twice's new album, 'Feel Special'
the article was released just recently before twice's comeback with 'Feel Special'. the song Love Foolish was produced by aubrey in 2018 when she was in the midst of her slow edm craze. it made into their album a year later, after voltage's debut. after the album was released, aubrey received online recognition from fans, and that was when they knew that b;rey was jyp's ex-soloist, hyun-b.

[+1205 -527] wow, she should've stayed in jyp. i mean, who would know that b;rey was hyun-b if jyp didn't point that out?
[+2101 -1289] Love Foolish is my favorite song in the album! i can't believe it was produced by b;rey! she's so talented!! you should check out her new group voltage as well!

songs produced by hyun-b, are any of your favorite songs here?
it was an online article by koreaboo released in 2019, just a few months before voltage's debut. it featured songs by popular artists like bad boy and kingdom come by red velvet, wind flower and rude boy by mamamoo, april fools by jamie, trust me by kard, different by woodz, and singing in the rain and eclipse by loona.

[+1289 -922] producing for red velvet? dude that's like, producing for goddeses! and she produced Bad Boy!!!! she's powerful!
[+1020 -382] i didn't know she produced for mamamoo,,

ex-jyp artist hyun-b to finally debut under a new girl group
the article was written after one of kjs' employee wrote that hyun-b would be in a new girl group soon. fans were happy to find out about it, yet sad to know that she wouldn't be getting a lot of recognition because it's from a nugu company.

[+2197 -109] what's the point of debuting if noone knows your new agency and if they don't have a proper debut? dsp should've debuted her as a singer
[+867 -1125] i love to see hyun-b on her game again, but a girl group? you've got to be kidding me. her vocal colors are too unique for a common girl group. she's better off solo.
