jung sulyeon, you recall, is and always has been a pillar. she's always held herself accountable for her actions and her obligations. you found she never made promises she couldn't keep, she always picked up the slack if others dropped the ball, and she always watched out for those around her. you recall a lot of the staff at dm would often give her more demanding training because they knew no one else could handle it as well as she could. sulyeon was never afraid of taking initiative and was lovingly referred to as "the queen of follow through". you can't count the number of sacrifices she's made for the benefit of others. well, not so much others as the company. jung sulyeon, you all agreed, lived at dm and would probably die at dm. most of her life was focused on making herself more noticable and valuable to dm, to jung minah. even when you were all leaving the company one by one and you tried to convince her to leave with you,she still believed the best of ceo jung. out of all the dm trainees, she was the one that was closest to the trainers and most other company staff. she was always the pillar of dm. while things and people changed and left, she was the one constant. and just like a pillar, you never saw jung sulyeon get upset. she simply took everything. all the pressure, all the force, she absorbed it all and remained steadfast. and even though she was a pillar, she was calming. any high intesity emotion would be soothed once entering jung sulyeon's presence. you recalled many a time where you would be crying because of something a trainer said only to be discovered by sulyeon and have her rub little circles on your spine, or wordlessly place your head on her chest. and she wasn't just emotionally calming either, because she was so dependable you always knew what she would do or how she would respond. while you and other trainees left the company, dm's staff knew they didn't have to worry about sulyeon leaving. she always knew what people needed from her, without anyone needing to tell her anything. she was the glue of dm, always a peacemaker between the trainees and even between the trainees and the company. and even though sulyeon was much loved for her stability and gentleness, she was never the friend you'd invite out if you wanted to have a good time. sulyeon never really knew how to respond to humor or sarcasm or even flirting, and her awkward responses made others uncomfortable. she had a hard time really ever making an impact on people because she was so predictable and mature, so many people simply labeled her as boring. not many people got to see it, however, jung sulyeon was literally the most stubborn person you had ever met. once she has a goal or a task, she is unwilling to compromise on it and absolutely will see it through to the end. the only person who could ever get her to change her mind was jung minah. if it didn't come from the beloved ceo's mouth, then sulyeon wouldn't do it, even if it was apparent that ceo jung made a bad judgement call. even when confronted with overwhelming evidence of something being a mistake, sulyeon will stick with it. that's why, you're all convinced, she's still at dm.

the tragedy of being a pillar is that in being one, there is no one around to support you. thus is jung sulyeon's eternal curse. she couldn't cry. she couldn't complain. she couldn't get upset and storm out of a practice room like the rest of you could. sulyeon never had an outlet for any kind of negative emotion she felt because she was unable to express them. she took on the burdens of others but never had anyone to help her with her burdens. she knew that if she showed weakness, the infrastructure she worked so hard to protect would crumble around her. and that realization made you feel guilty because you all should have been there to support her, instead of simply taking support for yourselves. especially you, since you were older than her. but she was careful in everything that she did, and that included not showing her emotions. she was very slow to trust people, even you never got to hear her life story before you left dm and you were the trainee sulyeong was closest to. whenever she was in charge, she would always repeat instructions multiple times to make sure they were followed. she always looked before she leapt, and all the other trainees joked that she would be the only one to survive a horror movie. her caution was often seen as a mood-killer because she not only needed to know the risks and potential outcomes, but she also would point out these risks to everyone else. even though she was suprisingly stubborn, her loyalty to dm meant that it was easy for those higher up in the company to overtake her. she always followed those in charge without question and never went against their desires. always a thorough rule-follower, sulyeon often nagged others into following the rules too. her serious nature often inhibited her from making super close connections to the other dm trainees, but those who were with the company long enough were able to look past that and were very fond of sulyeon. she hardly did things that made her look silly, unless it was required of her. she never made effort to fill any awkward silences and whenever she tried to make a joke she would fail miserably. her jokes would still make people laugh, just in a state of disbelief. you recalled the first time she cracked a "joke" around you, "unnie, you know what makes me smile? facial muscles". and even though her serious nature made her a bit awkward, everyone around her could agree that it was still something about her that was respectable. it made her a polite, upstanding trainee who never caused trouble. she was a trainee who only saw her dream. she was always honing her skills in the practice room and always sought out feedback from the trainers. whenever you and the other girls would be complaining about having to diet, sulyeon would be the one who wordlessly endured. when it comes to others, she was surprisingly patient when it came to mistakes, but you noticed she never allowed herself that same luxury. she always checked her work, and then checked again. sulyeong never wanted help, was never willing to delegate her tasks to you or anyone. while the other trainees would be eating or sleeping, sulyeon would always be in the practice room, working throughout the night. when she would fall short of one of the trainer's expectations, she would chastise herself. you always tried to comfort her during those times, but it never seemed to work.

while jung sulyeon was a pillar, she is also a raft. when situations grew tense, sulyeon was the voice of reason for you and many other dm trainees, bringing things back under control. she was practical, appreciated order and rules, she was realistic and a good decision maker. even if you disagreed at the time, maybe sticking with dm was the best decision for her, looking at how well mode is doing now. you see her on stage, protecting another member from a wardrobe malfunction, or effortlessly catching her mic when it falls off. you see her giving all her energy into her choreography regardless of its an actual stage or just a rehearsal. you see her bringing mode together just like she brought together your group of dm trainees. you wonder if she's struggling with mode just like she struggled with you, always a pillar, too self-sufficient to ask for help. the sulyeon you knew enjoyed alone time and solitude, you wonder how she gets on with all of her members. you're not worried about if she's eating enough or getting enough rest, because sulyeon wouldn't want you to worry about those things. she's capable enough to know when her body needs a break. after all, she's taken care of herself all of these years. instead, you worry if she's making friends. if the other girls laugh at her "jokes". if she misses you. of course, she has undying passion. you figure since she's finally debuted, she must feel like she's on top of the world. you know she won't give up easily. you know that jung sulyeon will go on, because like a concrete pillar, she endures.

jung sulyeon was born to a mother who gave her up soon after she was born. sulyeon was left at an orphanage with a note that said, "this baby's name is jung sulyeon. her birthday is january 2nd, 1998. please take care of her and provide her a happier life than i could. thank you, and i'm sorry.". sulyeon grew up in an orphanage with a bunch of caretaker unnies and oppas. they tried their best to give sulyeon the love and attention all children deserve, but the amount of children in the orphanage made that difficult. sulyeon learned from a young age that it was better if she was self-sufficient and that she couldn't simply wait around for her caretakers. if there wasn't such a stigma around adoption, jung sulyeon probably could have found a happy family. however, it seemed very few families were looking to adopt. and eventually, sulyeon grew past the prime age of adoption. 

schooling was hard for sulyeon. firstly, it was very difficult to get her into a good school because so many of them rejected her on the basis of being a parentless child. there was essentially no record in the family registry, and thus she was discriminated against. she managed to get into a public school thanks to the head of the orphanage's determination. however once she actually made it, she faced bullying and isolation from her peers. whenever she thought she made a friend on the playground after school, the next day the kid would either come up to sulyeon and say, "my parents said i can't play with you because you don't have any parents." or they would simply ignore sulyeon. she was essentially wangtta status in her class.

each school day would be greuling, and she would come back to a busy "home" where no one could really pay much attention to her in between caring for the younger kids. really the only comfort she had was when the orphanage head would come and sing songs with her and play guitar with her. 

when she was 11, a scouting agent from dm saw her running to her teacher and was very interested in her visuals. the scouting agent then talked to the teacher and asked to speak with sulyeon. the first thing out of her teacher's mouth was that sulyeon was an orphan, but that didn't seem to matter much to the scouting agent. they offered sulyeon an opprotunity to audition for dm. she was hesitant, but looking at her life's prospects. not many kids who aged out of the foster system lived fulfilling lives. and at the end of the day, all sulyeon wanted was to be loved by a bunch of people. so she bit the bullet and auditioned, and she passed the auditions and became a trainee at dm entertainment.

she was a trainee for two years before she decided to drop out of school to become a full-time trainee. sulyeong dormed in the company dorms with other trainees, and she was essentially under the guardianship of dm staff. sulyeong was considered for dm's project group but was cut from the lineup very early on in the process. and it was decided that boreal was to be a boygroups, as with axiz. she witnessed all of her fellow dm trainees up and leave, and in the end, what was she left with?

until jung minah announced the formation of mode, jung sulyeon had absolutely nothing.

TRAINING YEARS : 10 years.

TRAINING : sulyeon's training was long. long, and arduous, and full of hope and disappointment. since she had been training since she was a child, her workload had definitely expanded over her decade with dm. being a child with no family, sulyeon really had no oher obligations other than training, thus making her wholly dedicated to her training. every year while chuseok and christmas and new years rolled along, the trainees and staff would go home to be with their families. sulyeon remained.

eventually some of the dm staff took pity on the perpetually alone girl. outside of training time, they would get her sports drinks and healthy snacks. they would pat her head and tell her to keep up the good work, tell her to not be sick. and over time, this pity from the adults around her turned into a sort of support system for sulyeon.

as she grew older and older, the dm staff got to watch as she blossomed into a beautiful flower. her vocals were very strong and stable, her dancing was also solid. jung sulyeon was turning into an all-arounder right before their eyes. in behind-the-scenes material, sulyeon was almost always somewhere in the background. there was a plethora of clips capturing her trainee life. singing clips, dancing clips, clips of her interacting with her friends-turned-sunbaes.

when dm was playing around with the idea of a project group, jung sulyeon was considered for the lineup, along with baek saerom and a few other trainees. in the earliest incarnations, sulyeon was deemed the leader. however, she was cut from the lineup during one of the early evaluations because of her lack of charm, with one of the trainers stating that sulyeon was still like "unfermented kimchi". 

socially, sulyeon wasn't excluded to the point she was when she was a student. she couldn't be, realistically, what with the various group evaluations dm had. however, most people would still whisper about her and talk about her situation behind her back. they even used that as a reason for why she was never able to debut. how could the public love somebody that was given up by their parents? nevertheless, she had a few good friends surrounding her in the forms of baek saerom and axiz's leader, lee seungwan.

【 dream music's "eternal trainee" set to debut 】: sulyeon's official slot in mode's lineup causes a stir among netizens. many people who have been long-time stans of sulyeon have been aware of her long training time and are very happy for her debut. upon announcement of her debut, she recieved many celebration standing sprays from fans and dm staff alike.

【 mode's sulyeon is an orphan 】: around mode's promotions for feel special, sulyeon's status as an orphan is exposed by the tabloids. many korean netizens insult her and question how a parentless girl can be an idol, leaving many international fans confused. this lowers her already low popularity in mode thanks to the heavy stigma around orphans.

lee seungwan truly has the makings of a leader. like sulyeon, he is someone his group can depend on. he's mature and level-headed and he always knows how to make tough decisions and keep the peace. he's the kind of guy to go out of his way to help others, even handing out oranges to photographers who have to be up early to ctach photos of the group. he takes action when someone is in need and uses positive language. he's genuine and forthright and a great listener. seungwan is soft-spoken, relfective, and observant. he's able to lower anyone's defenses. he can read people very well, and it's said that no one can keep a lie from lee seungwan. he cares deeply about thsoe around him and has their best interests at heart. seungwan is willing to make endless sacrifices for the people he cares about. he isn't afraid of hard work and is wlling to put in extra work in order to give himself an edge. he started off at dm with a focus on dancing and rapping, but over time improved his vocals becuase he wanted a sure shot of being able to debut. so even though he's axiz's leader and main vocal, he's also the group's "all-arounder". he tends to worry about every little thing and detail such as if someone left the stove on or if somebody's eating enough. seungwan also has a habit of nagging people as a way to remind them to do something. sometimes he sounds exactly like a strict mother would. he would give up a lot for other people and is very warm and nuturing. however, if one looks closely enough, seungwan is actually very pensive and in tune with his emotions. 

BEFORE : 
the two met as trainees at dm. sulyeon was 16 years old and seungwan was 18 and had just became a trainee. one of the trainers introduced her to him, "oh, this is sulyeonie. she's younger than you but she's really capable. feel free to ask her for help if you need it." they exchanged polite greetings. their relationship grew over time simply from the proximity of being in the dm building training so often. the trainees knew sulyeon as the person who was in the practice rooms the most but seungwan came in close second. while other trainees went to the cafeteria to eat with their friends or to go take a much-needed break and have fun, sulyeon was almost always not included. seungwan noticed this and would almost always go out of his way to invite or otherwise include sulyeon. she would almost always decline, but just the thought of him reaching out made her extremely happy. sulyeon only declined because she was shy but also because she didn't want to negatively impact how the others thought of him, because even though sulyeon was no longer wangtta and had gained a few friends in the form of saerom and other trainees, people would still speak poorly of sulyeon and consequently those around her.

she wanted seungwan to be her friend as well but was too hesitant to say. luckily, baek saerom wasn't, especially since she and seungwan were same-aged friends. one day when saerom was taking sulyeon to a nearby cafe. she extended the offer to seungwan and he gladly accepted. when they got there, saerom went to the bathroom, seungwan ordered his drink before turning to sulyeon, "sulyeon-ah, would you like me to pay for your drink?"
"ah, you don't have to. saerom-unnie typically does..."
"don't worry about it! this is the first time we get to hang out, so i'm in a good mood."

sulyeon ordered black coffee, and seungwan was surprised. nevertheless, it's what started up their friendship. one day, after a monthly group evaluation, saerom and sulyeon's group recieved a harsh scolding. saerom was heading out of the building when seungwan asked her how their evaulation was. saerom told him it was terrible, and seungwan then asked if she was leaving without sulyeon. "yeah. i need to be alone right now. yeon-ah already listened to me rant about the whole thing so i don't wanna bother her anymore." after saerom left, seungwan went to go check up on sulyeon.

he found her in an empty practice room, just sitting on the ground and staring straight ahead. "sulyeon-ah? are you alright?"
"i've never... i've never recieved such a poor evaluation before."
"it must be tough, huh? it's alright to be sad, but it's also important to work harder in order to get better results. jung sulyeon, fighting!"
and even though those words were small, the gesture once again meant the world to sulyeon.

and from then on they grew even closer. seungwan was the only person who always seemed to know when to check up on sulyeon without being overbearing. for having always been the one to check up on others, it was an odd yet nice feeling. the two trained together a lot and she greatly admired seungwan for his work ethic and his skill. he originally started as a dance and rap focus under dm, but seungwan trained extensively in all areas and would even ask sulyeon for help with his vocals. and as they got closer, he introduced her other trainees he was close with, including the eventual members of axiz. seungwan was always there for her, watching out for her and supporting her. when she was cut from the project group, he was there to comfort her after she cried in ceo jung's office. seungwan bought her tteokbokki that she then shared with him. it was at this moment that she first asked if she could use informal speech with him, seungwan delightfully agreed and patted her head.

sulyeon definitely had a bit of a crush on seungwan, fantasies about him being her prince riding in on a white horse to protect her for the rest of her life filling her head. he was her flower, her knight, her friend. however, she wouldn't dare ever act on it, having seen too many trainees lost to dating. she could, however, enjoy his support and his presence. that is, until dm wanted to create a boygroup. sulyeon was definitely a bit bitter, because it meant she would have to spend more time training. however, when seungwan was considered for the lineup, she was both excited and frightened. at this time, seungwan was an "all-arounder" and his vocals had improved greatly. he could do whatever dm wanted him to do, and that made him a very promising prospect to ceo jung. she was excited for him because all of his hard work was paying off, but scared because she would have no one to rely on after his debut.

they tried their hardest to spend time with each other up until the final lineup was confirmed. they had many nice, quiet moments. a time for sulyeon to support seungwan occured during boreal's scandal. ceo jung had paused all preparations for axiz's debut, and seungwan told her this with a sad, watery smile on his face. "sulyeon-ah... axiz may not get to debut at all." and as he said those words, his smile broke and tears flowed from his eyes. sulyeon's tall, strong flower withered before her very eyes. and in the most unexpected thing jung sulyeon could ever do, she allowed her emotions to take over. she hugged him tightly and his hair. he laughed in between sobs, "sulyeon-ah, how heart-fluttering! i'm sorry, oppa should be doing this for you when you cry, shouldn't he?"
with her face flushed red sulyeon stammered, "f-for now, i want to do this for oppa. because i l-like you."
"alright. then oppa will hold you tight too, because i like you too. thank you yeon-ah, and i'm sorry."

she held him until he stopped crying. then seungwan asked her to be his girlfriend. sulyeon refused, "at least, not now. m-maybe when i debut and our dating ban is up, if you'll take me then." seungwan promised he would. when axiz finally debuted, sulyeon wrote him a letter thanking him for all his care and support and how she'll always support him and axiz even if they couldn't see each other much now.
