PERSONALITY:

The immediate thing that pisses people off about Sungjin is just how he just lets people mistreat him. He just won't ing say no. He's the type of person where if he was in a heated argument, he'd just immediately calm down the moment the other person says sorry, if he even got into an argument in the first place. He's not the type to let his anger get to him. He'd rather just go home without saying a word and wallow in a pool of self-pity. It's hard to just change this though, since he really doesn't expect much better for himself. Though they can't say this to him, his constant complaints about his life can annoy others, as he really doesn't do anything to make his life better.
Of course, Sungjin isn't depressing all the time. He's very kind-hearted and would sacrifice himself to help others, regardless of who they are. However, since he is so passive, it leads to others taking advantage of him constantly. Often, it wouldn't be Sungjin, but one of his friends that would have to step in and defend him. Sungjin really doesn't like confrontation, so he comes across as very level-headed. This isn't completely false, as Sungjin isn't very quick to get angry in general.
Sungjin's a person that loves consistency. He finds it hard for him to change himself or his life, even though he complains. His peers are either always talking about moving out of the small town to the big cities, or they themself are from the big city and craved the small town, while Sungjin can't even fathom living elsewhere.

BACKGROUND: 

Sungjin grew up with his parents and older brother. It was a typical small town life. His parents owned a small grocery store. Everyone in his neighborhood knew each other, and while Sungjin got along with other kids, it was hard for him to make friends. This would change in second year of high school, when Sungjin became friends with a new exchange student from Japan named Ayaka. Sungjin was picked by the teacher to show her around, and they ended up becoming friends. Ayaka ended up staying in Haean up until graduation. She moved back to Japan afterwards, but they still correspond online.
Since Sungjin did live in a small town and would inherit his parents' grocery store anyways, there really wasn't a point in going to college. Instead, he spent his days helping out at the cash register. When Sungjin was 19, his father won the lottery. The rest of the family used this money to move to Seoul and expand their business, but Sungjin just chose to stay in Haean. He sold their old family home and stays in the store all the time. His older brother's friend and regular customer of Sungjin's store, Jihoon became friends with Sungjin in his brother's absence. Somehow, Jihoon was able to save up enough to start travelling the world, but Sungjin declined when he offered for them to go together, afraid of changing his routine. Now, Sungjin no longer has any friends his age, unless you count his dog and the neighborhood aunties.
It was a Sunday when Sungjin had to go out to buy some supplies. Since he does own a grocery store that's literally right below his home, he doesn't really have a need to go out a lot of the time. He noticed a shop down the street, but he wasn't really sure when it opened because, again, he doesn't go out much. It was kind of out of character for him, but he decided to check it out.

✩ Sungjin's "fine" with being alone, but he has a crippling fear of the dark, so he always keeps his lights on and plays music all night.
✩ Among his other fears are house centipedes and roaches, so uhh, living alone is a problem.
✩ Electric flyswatters are a total godsend.
✩ Sungjin has never had a boy/girlfriend before.
✩ Sungjin has a habit of scrunching up his nose and of scratching the back of his neck.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Ayaka was put into a lower grade since she didn't know Korean that well but this was how she ended up meeting Sungjin. Ayaka was by no means shy, but since it was a completely new culture, she was overwhelmed by the language and curious classmates. Luckily, Sungjin was quieter and she felt comfortable enough around him to be her normal bubbly self. Sungjin didn't know much Japanese besides random phrases from anime (which, fyi, are not suited for most normal conversations :0). Luckily, Ayaka did learn Korean back in Japan, but was just not comfortable enough to say much before. Body language helped a lot lol. They became good friends and continue to correspond online. Ayaka currently lives in Naha, Japan, and got married in 2017. She had a daughter named Momo at the beginning of 2019 (bad timing? lol).

Jihoon and Sungjin met when they were younger since Jihoon was friends with Sungjin's older brother. Sungjin kind of just expected Jihoon to stop coming around when his older brother left, but he kept visiting Sungjin and they became friends. However, by spring 2019, Jihoon suddenly revealed that he had been saving up to travel the world. Jihoon offered to take Sungjin but he declined. Jihoon is currently hitchhiking through Europe. He and Sungjin keep in contact but he occasionally loses service at random times.

Sungjin came in one day, thinking Serenitea was a new shop, but turns out, it had been there for years. Kyungsoo laughed when told this. ("You've never went here with your friends?" "Well, uh, I kinda don't have any...") He ends up venting to Kyungsoo that day. Despite initially being embarrassed for talking so much, Sungjin finds himself returning every Sunday, then just whenever he has free time. Sungjin's not really sure whether Kyungsoo would consider him a friend yet, but he enjoys his company regardless.

Mrs. Lee was a customer of the Rohs since before Sungjin was born, and kept returning even after most of the family left. She says it's cause the vegetables are cheapest there, but Sungjin kind of expects it's to set him and her own daughter up. ("You know, I have a daughter around your age. You two should meet up and see how you like each other!" *daughter is like 30 and already has a boyfriend*) She's the #1 source of gossip in Haean.

Mrs. Choi is Mrs. Lee's friend and/or gossiping partner. Together, they meet every morning to go shopping at Sungjin's store. Luckily, Mrs. Choi's children are married, so Sungjin doesn't feel as pressured when they conversate. However, (tea alert!) when Mrs. Lee is not with her, Mrs. Choi often complains about how nosy she is... (neighborhood auntie drama!!)
